WE Day 2016

Wednesday 9th March, We Day UK 2016 was unforgettable. Wembley saw 12,000 young volunteers treated to inspiring speakers, A list celebrities and crowd-pumping performances, all to celebrate a year of young people making a difference in their local communities.

Niranjana Unni and Reggie Ryan from our school were invited to speak on stage in front of a packed arena and Abigail Hall was invited into the Press Room where the celebrities were being interviewed. The two students presented the amazing work their school has done on several social action for change campaigns. ‘It was incredible to see so many young people in one spot who have a passion for making a difference and creating a better world!’ said Reggie. Niranjana said ‘One of my favourite things about today was the unity all of the students in that one arena. We saw young people on stage bringing attention to the work others are doing, supporting one another in their endeavours, and truly demonstrating the power WE have when we stand together to make change.’

Jo Richardson Community School have been praised locally and nationally for their recent We Are Silent March and the work for LBGTQ inclusivity.

Fleur East, Revelation Avenue and Labarinth performed their songs while Hollywood megastar Marlee Martin and Rita Ora spoke about the personal hurdles they have had to overcome and Professor Brian Cox spoke about the power of volunteering in your community. The day was a huge success.

Ms Boller said ‘Our mission at Jo Richardson is to make change a reality, and I am so proud of our own speakers Reggie and Niranjana who left the huge crowd seriously inspired and ready to take action. We take pride in our students desire to make a change in their community, be it locally or globally and that is what makes our school such an incredible place to work and to be a student.’

Mayor of London Award On Monday 7th March, Jo Richardson Community School Student Voice received the Mayor of London award for our Social Action projects for 2015/16. Reggie Ryan, Niranjana Unni and Abigail Hall received the award from Boris Johnson at City Hall.

It has been an incredible year for our school in terms of local and national recognition for the amazing community action projects. We are a school that prides ourselves on not only high standards in the classroom but also outside of the classroom where our students have become advocates of change.

Thanks to our incredible parents and students we have collected over 750kg of food for our local food bank, taken our Student Voice system to Preston, London and Liverpool where our model is now being implemented. Introduced discreet LGBTQ lesson plans into the curriculum for LGBTQ awareness month and had two of our students speaking on stage at Wembley Arena last week about our projects in front of 12000 young people, celebrities and chart-topping singers.

Well done to everyone who supports our Student Voice. This award was for all involved

Ms Boller Student Communication Manager Return your library books before the Easter break All library books must be returned to the Library before the Easter break, last day is Thursday 24 March.

If you have lost a library book, the library fine of £5 should be paid, do not wait for a letter home before paying this. Payment is made via ParentPay, under ‘overdue library books’. Once the fine is paid a student’s library account will be cleared of the lost book.

Thank you to all students and parents for their support concerning library books.

Have a really good break.

Ms Osland School Librarian Young people and the media For our citizenship course work we are addressing the issue of how the young people are represented in the media. This is an issue that we have strongly considered as something that really does effect young people in our society. The media often cast young people in a bad light which doesn’t really reflect us in a true way and other people in society start to develop stereotypical views of all young people, portraying them as ‘all the same’. The media represents young people as ‘drug dealers’, ‘trouble makers’, ‘violent’ and ‘anti-social’. They also cast young ethnic groups in a negative way such as ‘because you’re Black or Asian or so on you are either involved in a ‘gang’ or some form of ‘terrorism.’ These stereotypical views reflect badly on young people because the way the media presents us isn’t as appealing to society and this can affect our lives and our futures. No teenager or young person wants to walk down the street in fear of what negative opinions other people around them must be thinking. No young person wants to come to school and be unfairly treated because of the views of others and no young person wants to start to believe all the negativity the media posts about them, this could make them act out with anti-social behaviour. Young people just want to be appreciated and not looked down upon or categorized due to how other certain small groups of young people behave. This issue is something that is ongoing and should be recognised by all. Young people have a say as well as the media do, so don’t let stereotypical views that the media portray cloud your judgement. Let’s make people think positively about the young!

form groups and a staff team participated. There were a series of exciting games leading to a tense final between 12D and staff. In the last 30 seconds of extra-time Mr Howard made an explosive run and scored an excellent goal to secure the winning trophy for the staff team.

During the week students helped to raise almost £100 for Sport Relief and I would like to say thank you to all students that participated in the competition or came along to show their support and cheer on the players.

Love London Working

Coffee Morning Monday 21st March

At East Potential we are delighted to be working on the Love London Working Programme, funded by the European Social Fund and match funded by East Thames Group. This programme enables us to work with Economically Inactive Participants within the local area. We are keen to build relationships with local Schools to help unemployed parents into training or sustained employment. Some of the services available through Love London Working include:

help with writing a CV;

placements on one of our many training programmes;

support with securing work experience;

help with job search;

mentoring support;

help with training

help with childcare

We can help those effected by the benefit cap as well as undertake a ‘better off calculation’ to help participants claim the benefit they are entitled to once returning to work! Our aim is to work with local schools to run workshops as well as undertake 1-2-1 support.

We have already helped 200 participants find the jobs they want, in 2014/2015 and look forward to helping out the parents at your School and hopefully build a successful and fruitful relationship. We have arranged our first Coffee Morning on Monday the 21st March at 9am till 11.30am, please come along for an informal chat to see what we can offer you.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely
