The award is given to those fourth and fifth graders exhibiting the greatest increase in their reading skills during the school year, based on standardized reading tests (Scholastic Reading Inventory) given to each student every year at the beginning and ending of each school term. Much “to do” is made of their individual achievement and exhibition of leadership qualities in working so hard to increase their reading skills. They are also presented with the award at an Awards Day ceremony at their respective schools, in front of their peers, school faculty and parents. The theory is to provide elementary age children with a significant, positive, and tangible incentive that hard academic work can be recognized and rewarded. Increasing a student’s reading ability directly correlates with their potential to achieve a higher academic level. Regardless of socioeconomic status, a child can achieve and those who try hardest and succeed should be rewarded. The goal is to instill the concept of rewards received for effort expended in academic achievement. This positive, tangible reinforcement that one can be rewarded for successfully trying to do better, will be of great benefit to these children as they move forward through life. The Rotary Achiever’s Award was started January, 1997 at the DeLand Rotary Club’s Projects Committee meeting. An exciting aspect of the award is that it is totally dependent on personal achievement of the student. Those who receive the award will have a unique status, based solely on their own efforts. We hope it will, over time, provide incentive for others to try a little harder and also serve to illustrate for all that there are rewards for personal academic achievement. All winners of the Rotary Achiever’s Award will belong to the same club, an Achiever’s Club, which is based on their own demonstrated academic achievements. Since 1997, the 18 Year Total of awards given is $102,968.00 to 829 4th/5th Graders who exhibited leadership and academic achievement! The DeLand Rotary actively seeks Rotary Achiever Partners, to sponsor individual Awards. The cost of a sponsorship is $150.00, which covers the $100.00 check for the Award and the $30.00 cost of the plaque. In 2014 we had 35 Achiever Partners. Cog Wheel May 2015

ROTARY CLUB OF DELANDMEMBER LIST

The Rotary Achiever’s Award: Rewards Received for Effort Expended

The Rotary Achiever’s Award Program is lead by Volusia County Property Appraiser and DeLand Rotary

Club Member, Morgan Gilreath. The award is given to those fourth and fifth graders exhibiting the greatest

increase in their reading skills during the school year, based on standardized reading tests (Scholastic Reading

Inventory) given to each student every year at the beginning and ending of each school term. The

Principals from the nine DeLand area Elementary Schools provide names of those students with the highest

rate of increase in their reading skills from beginning to end of the school year. The DeLand Rotary rewards the

highest academic achievers.

The winners receive a check for $100.00 and wall plaque, as well as a free lunch and recognition at a

DeLand Rotary Club Luncheon on Rotary Achiever’s Day, where the kids find out about the award. Much “to do”

is made of their individual achievement and exhibition of leadership qualities in working so hard to increase their

reading skills. They are also presented with the award at an Awards Day ceremony at their respective schools,

in front of their peers, school faculty and parents.

The theory is to provide elementary age children with a significant, positive, and tangible incentive that

hard academic work can be recognized and rewarded. Increasing a student’s reading ability directly correlates

with their potential to achieve a higher academic level. Regardless of socioeconomic status, a child can achieve

and those who try hardest and succeed should be rewarded. The goal is to instill the concept of rewards

received for effort expended in academic achievement. This positive, tangible reinforcement that one can be

rewarded for successfully trying to do better, will be of great benefit to these children as they move forward

through life.

The Rotary Achiever’s Award was started January, 1997 at the DeLand Rotary Club’s Projects Committee

meeting. An exciting aspect of the award is that it is totally dependent on personal achievement of the student.

Those who receive the award will have a unique status, based solely on their own efforts. We hope it will, over

time, provide incentive for others to try a little harder and also serve to illustrate for all that there are rewards for

personal academic achievement. All winners of the Rotary Achiever’s Award will belong to the same club, an

individual Awards. The cost of a sponsorship is $150.00, which covers the $100.00 check for the Award and the

$30.00 cost of the plaque. In 2014 we had 35 Achiever Partners.

What Is Rotary? Answers in Less Than 1 MinuteTaken from: Long Story Short by Susie Ma

William B. Boyd, Rotary Foundation trustee chair-elect, past RI president, New Zealand:We exist to serve people. The best example of this is the polio eradication campaign. A lot of

people you meet don’t understand Rotary, so you need to make the point that it is a service organizationwith an international aspect.
