FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora It’s the last Sunday of the year! A New Year is starting in 4 days. On this Sunday we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and

Joseph. During a special weekly general audience last December 17th, 2014, coinciding with his 78th birthday, Pope Francis called on all families to make a special place for Jesus in their homes in an imitation of the Holy Family. The Argentine Pontiff noted that Jesus lived a normal life, in a normal family, and how his and his parent’s examples can serve as role models to people now. He said each Christian family is to welcome, speak, and develop their relationship with Christ, which will in turn “improve the world,” like Jesus’ parents did That would be good advice or better yet, a good resolution for this New Year 2015. I remember a story told by Msgr. Tonne about the New Year. In many a home, at least during the last generation, a certain door or panel was reserved for measuring the heights of the children. Generally it was a hidden away door, that was left unpainted…. so as not to remove the little scratches and marks and dates and initials. Over the years the inside of that door had many lines and marks. Children would check themselves against their brothers and sisters and ask, “How much have I grown?” “Am I bigger than Billy?” “Pretty soon I’ll be as big as Joe.” Anyone can realize the advantage and interest of such a record. It made the children stand, walk and sit tall and straight. It made them want to eat healthy foods. It made them realize the im-portance of rest. It made them eager to show progress in bodily growth. Every New Year, we should stand against our own measuring chart and see how much we have grown spiritually. Perhaps you could start measuring on the inside of the church door… if you come there regularly. After an enjoyable party and making some good resolutions on New Year’s Eve, a man woke up the following day and prayed right away. Dear Lord So far this year I've done well. I haven't gossiped I haven't lost my temper; I haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent. I'm very thankful for that. But in a few minutes, Lord, I'm going to get out of bed, and from then on I'm probably going to need a lot more help. Amen. Wishing you a better world and a better life in the coming year. Happy New Year 2015!

WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zech-ariah and Elizabeth, and the more miracu-lous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of self-surrender. They aban-doned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise.

December 16, 2014 PRINCIPAL'S LETTER Dear Holy Name Families, This was an exciting week for our students as we prepared for our Christmas Concert and Christmas Eve Mass. Last Friday morning, Mr. and Mrs. Cresci (Bella 7B) gath-ered up all of the baby gifts around our beautiful stable and donated them to needy mothers and their newborn babies. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Cresci and the Holy Name School community for demon-strating the true meaning of Christmas to each other and to those who need our help. Our Student Council delivered toys and a check to Toys for Tots this week. Thank you all for donating money and toys. Many of our students from all grade levels will take part in our Children's Mass on Christmas Eve, December 24, at 5:00 p.m. They will do an interpretation of the birth of Christ followed by the sac-rifice of the Mass. Please bring your whole family and join us on Christmas Eve. God bless each of you during this special season and in the New Year. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos

The Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph The devotion to the Holy Family was born in Bethlehem, together with the Baby Jesus. The shepherds went to adore the Child and, at the same time, they gave honor to His family. Later, in a simi-lar way, the three wise men came from the East to adore and give honor to the newborn King with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh that would be safeguarded by His family. Today’s celebration demonstrates Christ’s humility and obe-dience with respect to the fourth commandment, whilst also highlight-ing the loving care that His parents exercised in His keeping. The servant of God, Pope John Paul II, in 1989, entitled his Apostolic Ex-hortation, ‘Redemptoris Custos’ (Guardian of the Redeemer) which was dedicated to the person and the mission of Saint Joseph in the life of Christ and of the Church. After exactly a century, he resumed the teaching of Pope Leo XIII, for who Saint Joseph ‘.. shines among all mankind by the most august dignity, since by divine will, he was the guardian of the Son of God and reputed as His father among men’ (Encyclical Quamquam Pluries [1889] n. 3). Pope Leo XIII con-tinued, ‘.. Joseph became the guardian, the administrator, and the legal defender of the divine house whose chief he was.[…] It is, then, natural and worthy that as the Blessed Joseph ministered to all the needs of the family at Nazareth and girt it about with his protection, he should now cover with the cloak of his heavenly patronage and defend the Church of Jesus Christ.’ Not many years before, blessed Pope Pius IX had proclaimed Saint Joseph, ‘Patron of the Catholic Church’ (1870). Almost intuitively, one can recognize that the mysterious, exemplary, guardianship enacted by Joseph was conducted firstly, in a yet more intimate way, by Mary. Consequently, the liturgical feast of the Holy Family speaks to us of the fond and loving care that we must render to the Body of Christ. We can understand this in a mystical sense, as guardians of the Church, and also in the Eucharistic sense. Mary and Joseph took great care of Jesus’ physical body. Following their example, we can and must take great care of His Mystical Body,

the Church, and the Eucharist which He has entrusted to us. If Mary was, in some way, ‘the first tabernacle in histo-ry’ (John Paul II Ecclesia de Eucharistia, n. 55) then we the Tabernacle in which Our Lord chose to reside in person, in His Real Presence, was also entrusted to us. We can learn from Mary and Joseph! What would they ever have over-looked in the care of Jesus’ physical body? Is there some-thing, therefore, that we can withhold for the right and ador-ing care of His Eucharistic Body? No amount of attention, no sane act of love and adoring respect will ever be too much! On the contrary, our adoration and respect will al-ways be inferior to the great gift that comes to us in the Holy Eucharist. Looking at the Holy Family, we see the love, the protection, and the diligent care that they gave to the Re-

deemer. We can not fail to feel uneasiness, perhaps a shameful thought, for the times in which we have not rendered the appropriate care and attention to the Blessed Eucharist. We can only ask for for-giveness and do penance for all the sacrilegious acts and the lack of respect that are committed in front of the Blessed Eucharist. We can only ask the Lord, through the intersession of the Holy Family of Naza-reth, for a greater love for their Son Incarnate, who has decided to remain here on earth with us every day until the end of time.

We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties.
