THE FEAST OF THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome. This is not St. Peter's, but it is the Pope's cathedral. Also called the Church of Holy Savior or the Church of St. John Baptist, it was the baptism church of ancient Rome. It was built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. This feast became a univer-sal celebration in honor of the basilica called "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" (omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput) as a sign of love for and union with the See of Peter. According to the 1962 Missal of St. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is the commemoration of St. Theodore, a Christian soldier and martyr of Asia Minor.

FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Yes! Yes! Yes! This has been the Giants victory chant. Those three yesses could stand for their three victories

in five years. We salute the Giants! But my three yesses stand for the celebrations we had last Sun-day: All Soul's Day, National Vocation Awareness Week and Reli-gious Education week -three celebrations at the same time in one day. Adding color to our celebration at the 9:30am mass were the students from our Religious Education Program who dressed up as saints. They wore the real Halloween costumes, keeping it in mind that Halloween means Eve of the Holy or the Saints. I told the story about a priest who invited kids to come treat-or tricking at the rectory provided they wear costume of Saints. One kid came dressed up as St Anthony, another as St. Jude, St. Au-gustine, a little girl dressed up like St Claire. But then along came this little boy with a dog costume. The priest said “I told you to should come here with a saint costume, why are you in dog cos-tume?” The kid replied “I'm ST. BERNARD!” Another beautiful sight last Sunday, as we celebrated the opening of Religious Education week, was the presence of parents of the Rel Ed students who took up the collection at the mass. I admire these parents who want their children to be brought up in the Catholic way, receive religious instruction, learn and enhance our catholic teaching and receive the sacraments of the church. They are making sure their children who are enrolled in non-Catholic schools are still able to avail Catholic catechism. We thank our volunteer catechists under the direction and spiritual advice of Sr. Necy Guan, FdCC. They are the evangelizers of God's words and works. On that same day celebrating National Vocation Aware-ness week, a young man approached me after the mass express-ing his desire to become a priest. We hope we get more vocations to the priesthood and to religious life. This Sunday we celebrate another important feast of the church, the Dedication of the St John Lateran Basilica in Rome, the Cathedral Church of our Holy Father Pope Francis. It's not St Peter's in the Vatican but the Basilica of St John Lateran in Rome that is the Pope's titular church. Although it may not be as magnifi-cent and famous as St. Peter's, it enjoys the privilege of being called the "mother" of all churches. This Sunday, I am scheduled to say a mass at the Good Shepherd Church, somewhere in Israel near the city of Jericho. Let our celebrations continue, but on this special feast of the Dedi-cation of the Lateran Church, may we be reminded that we our-selves are God's -precious and holy.

Question: What does the Second Vatican Council teach about how war, when needed, is to be conducted?

Answer from Gaudium et Spes: On the subject of war, quite a large number of nations have subscribed to international agree-ments aimed at making military activity and its consequences less inhuman. Their stipulations deal with such matters as the treat-ment of wounded soldiers and prisoners. Agreements of this sort must be honored. Indeed they should be improved upon so that the frightfulness of war can be better and more workably held in check. All men, especially government officials and experts in these matters, are bound to do everything they can to effect these improvements. Moreover, it seems right that laws make humane provisions for the case of those who for reasons of conscience refuse to bear arms, provided however, that they agree to serve the human community in some other way. Certainly, war has not been rooted out of human affairs. As long as the danger of war remains and there is no competent and sufficiently powerful authority at the international level, govern-ments cannot be denied the right to legitimate defense once every means of peaceful settlement has been exhausted. State authorities and others who share public responsibil-ity have the duty to conduct such grave matters soberly and to protect the welfare of the people entrusted to their care. But it is one thing to undertake military action for the just defense of the people, and something else again to seek the subjugation of other nations. Nor, by the same token, does the mere fact that war has unhappily begun mean that all is fair between the warring parties. Those too who devote themselves to the military service of their country should regard themselves as the agents of security and freedom of peoples. As long as they fulfill this role properly, they are making a genuine contribution to the establishment of peace. After reading the above answer regarding the subject of war, I’m once again impressed by the foresight of the Second Vatican Council. Its commentary and Catholic-perspective regarding the conflicts of the world is no less true today than when written almost 50 years ago!

HOLY NAME SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 11.4.14 PRINCIPAL'S LETTER Dear Holy Name Families, Thank you to Mrs. Noreen McCullagh for planning the All Saints Day Mass last Thursday. Students in each class learned about a particular saint. Objects that symbolize these saints were brought to the altar during Mass. Students were told that St. Bernadette is remembered by parishioners of Holy Name Parish because of her beautiful grotto next to the church. We also reminded students that we remember St. Francis of Assisi each year with our annual "Blessing of the Animals" on October 4. Thank you to the 5th grade students who did the read-ings and sang along with Mr. Tony Eiras to fill the church with their beautiful voices. Thank you to Miss Anna Rivieccio and Mr. Dennis Dea, Student Council Moderators, and all of the Student Council offic-ers for setting up the Cat Walk for the whole community to enjoy on Halloween day. Of course, these same students helped to clean up after the Halloween parade, pie-eating contest, musical chairs and other activities. It was a great day for all of us. Thank you. Parent-Teacher Conferences are going well. It's been nice seeing so many smiling faces. I hope we are meeting your child's spiritual and educational needs. 2014 Woman of the Year Nominee LINDA SIDECO

Rosalinda Sideco is an example of how to walk the path of love and service. She is a model of walking the extra mile for the good of others, especially those who are in need. These traits are expressed and manifested in the following ministries/services she has done over so many years and continues to do: Fr. Donald D’Angelo, Pastor of Holy Name in 1999, as-signed Linda along with her husband Tony as Parish Wedding Co-ordinators. They teamed up with the Canossian Sisters in preparing couples for marriage through sharing their own married life experi-ences. Linda has been a gentle presence and guide to couples, especially during their rehearsals and ceremonies. As Hospitality Coordinator, Linda is always on top of any parish reception, formal or simple. Her creativity makes those re-ceptions more festive. Her touch and presence reveal how she puts her heart into this ministry and makes people feel comfortable and welcome. Her hospitality reaches out not only to the parishioners but to visiting priests and other guests in the rectory. She is a Eucharistic Minister on Sundays at 11:30 AM Mass. She and Tony started the Saturday “church environment group”. These are volunteers who keep the church surroundings clean for Sunday worship. They also perform community building, with their simple breakfast after their work. In 2006 she joined the group of volunteers from the par-ish, to support a Jesuit project directed by one of her daughters in New Orleans. They helped assembled beds, shopped for other needs and fed Hurricane Katrina victims. Aside from the two weeks volunteer work with representatives from Holy Name, Linda and Tony went back twice in one week to help and support the Jesuit Katrina Project. As a member of Paniquenians-USA, Linda goes every summer with other members of this association for a mission in the Philippines. They offer free dental and other medical needs of the poor in Paniqui, Philippines. Her helping hands are always ready to give without hesitation, especially when needs arise from shopping to cooking and serving. On October 29, 2012 Linda received a Certificate of Honor from San Francisco Board of Supervisors and City Council for Most Outstanding Community Service recommended by San Francisco Filipino Heritage. As member of the Association of Jenne Jugan of the Little Sisters of the Poor from Saint Anne’s Home, Linda and her hus-band Tony volunteer in feeding the patients, giving rides and ac-companying them to doctor’s appointments. Linda’s loving support and sharing of her time, talents, and treasures for the priests and other people are commendable. There is more “behind the scenes” volunteer work that Linda offers to our faith-community. We are grateful and happy to have a woman of faith with such a big and generous heart.

HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE The Holy Name “Tree of Life”, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Do-nors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the “Tree of Life” will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. We suggest setting a MAXIMUM number of characters per leaf to 5 lines, 25 characters per line including spaces.
