NAIL EXTRACTION
Definition
• The removal of nail from the nail bed for medical purposes.
Indication
• Infection onychomycosis (fungal infection)• Self mutilation onychocryptosis (ingrown
nail) onychogryposis ( deformed, curved nail)• Chronic recurrent paronychia (inflamation of
nailfold) • Tumor• Trauma
Contraindication
• Allergic to locl anethetics• Bleeding diathesis
TYPE OF Anesthesia
• Local ring block• General anesthesi
Technique• Scrub and drape the finger in a sterile fashion• Administer local anesthetics to ring block the finger • Wait till 5 – 10 minutes to confirm anesthesia• Use a straight hemostat to firmly secure a finger torniquet around the
base of the finger• Insert the blades of curved iris scissors or small periosteal elevator
beneath the free edge of the nail (hyponychium) gently open and close the iris scissors blades or gently press the nail bed
with the small periosteal elevator advance poximally in between the nail plate and nail bed until the
instrument reaches the nail fold• Once the nail is sufficiently separated from the nail bed, it is gently
removed by applying firm and steady distal traction using a hemostat
Complication
• Bleeding• Infection• Nail bed injury• Nail matrix injury
