TRANSCRIPT
From the Director, Another year behind us. I don’t know about all my readers but
didn’t 2018 fly by? Maybe it was the 5 elections we had in 2018.
Maybe it was the birth of the Keep Nahant Wild committee. Or
maybe it was the changes in leadership here in Nahant. We wel-
comed a new Town Administrator in 2018. Tony Barletta came in
when the town was in financial trouble and the moral in the town
was at a low. Tony came in and made the necessary changes to
boost morale. Thank you Tony.
There were 3 Nahant residents who turned 100 in 2018, Anna
Dragon, Jodie LaFalce and Virginia Fiske. Jodie & Virginia still live
in their family homes, while Anna is in a nursing facility near her
family in Lowell. We lost several seniors this year most notably
and close to my heart was Joe Desmond. Joe was a long time
driver for the Council on Aging. Joe Sherber who was a Council on
Aging board member. Sue Seymour who came from England and
made Nahant her home. I miss you all and thank you for your
contributions to the Council on Aging.

Property Fraud Watch Alert Program
Sponsored by
Commonwealth of Massachusetts
South Essex District Registry of Deeds
In 2017 the Registry of Deeds launched a state of the art free Property Fraud Watch Alert pro-
gram. The program is an informative and interactive power point presentation which has been
well received by Rotaries, Libraries and Council on Aging groups.
The FBI has reported that property and mortgage fraud is one of the fastest growing white collar
crimes in America. We here at the Registry have developed this Property Fraud Watch Service to
assist the homeowners of Essex County in protecting their most valuable asset… their property.
Property owners can sign up either on-line or by telephone 978-542-1704 for this free service and
our office will send them a notification or call them if certain documents are recorded with our
office against their property. Our program will go a long way towards detecting and thwarting
real estate fraud and will be particularly helpful to the elderly who are often the most vulnerable
to scams and fraud.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR - AGAIN!
Ask Your Healthcare Provider whether shoveling or other work in the snow is safe for you.
Just make sure that if you choose to shovel, you take some precautions. Remember, when it’s
cold outside, your heart works double time to keep you warm. Strenuous activities like shoveling
snow may put too much strain on your heart, especially if you have heart disease. Shoveling can also
be dangerous if you have problems with balance or have “thin bones” (osteoporosis).
When the storms come rolling into New England, and onto our little island of
Nahant, and you need assistance……..there are people who are available to
help!
If you are willing to assist our seniors please contact us.

A third of US adults report that they usually get less than the recommended amount of sleep. Not
getting enough sleep is linked with many chronic diseases and conditions—such as type 2 diabetes,
heart disease, obesity, and depression—that threaten our nation’s health. Not getting enough sleep
can lead to motor vehicle crashes and mistakes at work, which cause a lot of injury and disability
each year. Getting enough sleep is not a luxury—it is something people need for good health. Sleep
disorders can also increase a person’s risk of health problems. However, these disorders can be
diagnosed and treated, bringing relief to those who suffer from them.
. The following is a description of some of the major sleep disorders. If you, or someone you know,
is experiencing any of the following, it is important to receive an evaluation by a healthcare provider
or, if necessary, a provider specializing in sleep medicine.
Insomnia is characterized by an inability to initiate or maintain sleep. It may also take the form of
early morning awakening in which the individual awakens several hours early and is unable
to resume sleeping. Difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep may often manifest itself as excessive
daytime sleepiness, which characteristically results in functional impairment throughout the day. Be-
fore arriving at a diagnosis of primary insomnia, the healthcare provider will rule out other potential
causes, such as other sleep disorders, side effects of medications, substance abuse, depression, or
other previously undetected illness. Chronic psychophysiological insomnia (or “learned” or
“conditioned” insomnia) may result from a stressor combined with fear of being unable to sleep. Indi-
viduals with this condition may sleep better when not in their own beds. Health care providers may
treat chronic insomnia with a combination of use of sedative-hypnotic or sedating antidepressant
medications, along with behavioral techniques to promote regular sleep.
