Volunteer Position Description

Position: North Dakota State Representative Appointment: By the Regional Chair

Term: 2 Years, renewable Qualifications:

A NAFSA and Region IV member

Minimum of two years experience in the field of international education

Demonstrated commitment to international education and exchange

Demonstrated commitment to the concept of professional development through participation in conferences and workshops

Ability to foster communication between the national and regional levels

Observance of NAFSA’s Statement of Ethical principles

Experience as a presenter or coordinator on the regional level

Willingness to serve as a part of the regional leadership by working with the chair-stream on the needs of the State of North Dakota, membership inclusion and conference planning

Meetings:

Spring Team / Conference Planning Meeting (Travel, shared lodging, and meals covered)

State Meetings, as is possible

Annual Conference (Reimbursed for shared lodging and per diem for night of Team Meeting)

o Team Meeting

o Regional Update Meeting

o Appropriate Meeting according to position

Regional Conference (Reimbursed for shared lodging and per diem for night of Team Meeting)

o Team Meeting Opening Reception

o Leadership or Newcomers Meeting

o All special events

Responsibilities:

Serve to represent the interests of individuals in Region IV but focusing on the State of North Dakota

Serve as an information source for issues and topics in international education to all individuals in Region IV and within the state

Distribute information to individuals on and opportunities offered through NAFSA for individuals interested in NAFSA

Access the international and higher education needs within the State

Encourage participation in the Region IV conference

Write a welcome letter to all new members from the State who join NAFSA at the conference and throughout the year

Work with other active groups of international educators in the state to organize a state trainings or meetings

Have regular communication with the active networks in the State that focus on international education to promote NAFSA events, publications, and membership

Collect information on action or proposed action of the State Legislature or other state agencies that might affect international education. Develop a plan of action in conjunction with the Public Policy Representative

Report activities within the State and share at Region IV Conference and Spring Team Meeting

Support the mission of NAFSA by providing information on membership, meetings, and professional development opportunities to institutions in the State

Works with the conference-planner and chair-stream on conference planning by: o Serve as a mentor in the mentee/mentor program o Identify special needs of members and non-members within the State, such as workshop topics and

session topics for the regional conference o Assist at the registration desk during the conference

Prepare written reports of activities for the fall conference and spring team training

Provides necessary information and reports, as requested by the chair and the NAFSA National office

Performs duties as assigned by the chair

Assist Region IV chair-stream in identifying potential candidates as a successor

Ensure a smooth transition for the successor to the position
