Francesco studies Industrial Design in Rome. He started his sail-racing activity in 2OO1 in the Optimist class and later in the Laser one. Since 2OO7 he has been racing as skipper on the Hobie Cat 16, one of the most popular sports catama-rans. He has been a member of the Compagnia della Vela Roma’s racing team, coached by Matteo Nicolucci, skilled in multihull racing at national and international levels. In this class, Francesco achieved many important results, such as the 3rd place in the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, Brazil 2OO9.
Caterina Marianna got a BA degree in Arabic Studies, and is now preparing her MA thesis in Islamic Studies at the Oriental University of Naples. Since 2OOO she has been sailing in the Laser class. Later she joined the Hobie Cat 16 racing team of the Compagnia della Vela Roma as crew. She achieved several important results, such as the 3rd place at the Italian Championship Hobie Cat 16 Open, Cagliari 2O12.
Since January 2O13, Francesco and Caterina have been members of the Compagnia della Vela Roma’s project NACRA 17 OLYMPIC CLASS “TOWARDS RIO 2O16”. It is a four-year program (2O13-2O16) concerning the sports activity on the new Olympic Mixed Catamaran class. It aims at preparing strong and competitive teams, and supporting them du-ring the Olympic Sailing Campaign. The final goal is being selected for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

CLASSE MIXED MULTIHULL NACRA 17 Francesco and Caterina are members of the Italian Sailing Team since July 2O13, and have started their project on the Olympic catamaran Nacra 17 in January 2O13 with their coach, Matteo Nicolucci. They are specialized and skilled in racing on multihulls, such as the Hobie Cat 16, the SL 16, the Class A and the F18.

In the Olympic Games of Rio 2O16, the multihull sailing discipline will be con-tested on the new Nacra 17 catamaran.This boat is inspired by the modern AC45, the catamarans of America’s Cup World Series. It is innovative and technologically advanced, as it makes use of a carbon mast and of curved foils.A peculiar feature of this special multihull class is its mixed crew, male and female.
