DOG OF THE MONTH
Laurie (R) and Nicole (L) Stelling Our new banner Randi Jo (L), Ruth (M),
& Nicole (R)
We want to dearly thank all the former adopters of a N.A.B.S. rescue who
have stepped forward to help keep N.A.B.S. up and running at Petco on the
weekends. We were really struggling to keep going with a shortage of volun-
teers. God Bless those that responded to our cry for help, because of their
help adoptions have picked up a bit and things run smoother. It is a relief to
know we have help with crates being set up and broke down and people to
take care of the dogs while we speak with the public about applications and
adoptions. We would love for more people to come forward and dedicate just
a few hours each month on the weekend to share the work load and help
keep us going. If you were blessed with a furry family member from N.A.B.S.
please help us save others and find them the wonderful homes as yours have
found.
Noah’s Ark Bayou Sanctuary Animal Rescue was one of four rescue groups chosen to participate
in the Tom Bass Park “Ride to the Rescue” on February 1st. Nicole and I found out about this from
our cocker spaniel’s agility instructor.
Ride to the Rescue is a unique organization dedicated to raising funds for local animal rescue
groups . Net proceeds directly provide for medical needs, creature comforts, and help finding for-
ever homes. Nicole Stelling, Randi Jo Miller, Ruth and Mary Merlau and myself volunteered from
9:30-1:30 passing out snacks and refreshments to the riders at one of the rest stops.

ROCCO is a beautiful male white lab. He is very
energetic with a loving heart. He is looking for an
active family to call his own for the rest of his
life.
Celebrate Every Day:
For the dog, every morning is Christmas morning. Every
walk is the best walk, every meal is the best meal, every
game is the best game. We can learn so much by observing
the way our pets rejoice in life's simplest moments. Take
time every day to celebrate the many gifts that are hidden in
the ordinary events of your own life. I believe that you have
not truly loved until you have had a dog to love and to love
you back.

UPDATES
I just wanted to update you on a wonderful dog we have thanks to Noah's Ark. I am
attaching a picture of us and our four dogs; the smaller, brown, younger, dachshund
mix one is a Noah's Ark rescue from November 2005. You named him "Dasher" (as we
later found out why as we chased him down the beach....), and we saw him one day in
the store while we were shopping. He was up for adoption, and we adopted him the
next day after struggling with how to take care of four dogs. He tested positive for
heartworm, and we have put him through the treatment for that. He is now heart-
worm negative. He has received annual vet exams and shots, and anything else in be-
tween that which was either necessary or desired. He has two brothers and one sister
(all of the four legged kind) and spends the days exhausting them (as they are all much
older than he is). He has custom upholstery bedding in the "dog's room" which he
shares with his sister and brothers; has a new house being built for him and his sis-
ter/brothers which includes two dog rooms -- all air conditioned/heated, fully double
fenced/gated, etc.; and spends the weekends at the vacation home in Galveston. What
a life he has -- wish I had the same! I am sharing this with you to let you know that
(1) your work does not go unrewarded, and (2) to give you an update on the former
"Dasher", now "Andy" rescue dog. Attached is his photograph with the rest of us, as
photographed by Evin Thayer, from Houston.
Thank you for the work you do each and every day and for saving Andy!

I received your Newsletter from NABS and just wanted to let you
know that my baby Duncan is doing very well. We go for a walk in
the park twice every day and that gives me exercise I was not get-
ting before he joined my family! He still loves to be on my lap and
wants a lot of attention. It’s so cute… he has it timed when I sit
down he jumps up and we land on my chair at the same time.
March 15th last year I adopted him and with his birthday coming
up soon I just wanted to say thank you for saving his life. He is so
very precious to me that I can’t imagine what I would do without
him now. It takes a special kind of person to rescue those babies,
take them home, care for them and give them up when they are
ready to go home with their new families.
Thank you again!

Praying they all find forever homes.. Brandi and I
drove by the dump today and said..this is where Laci
lived and can't believe she never got hit by a dump
truck......lots of em going back and forth and she was
dodging them..she's a Fat Piggy that loves to play and

Dani ( aka "The Doodler", "Dani-doodle", "Doodle-
dumpling", "Mommy's Little
Girl", etc. :-) is doing great! We
can't imagine our lives without
her. She is definitely a bless-
ing for Jacob and I. We bought
a house last fall, and she loves
her new back yard! She does-
n't have any siblings yet, but
she loves going to doggie day-
care every Tuesday and play-
ing with all of her friends!
Thanks!

UPDATES CONT.
Aretha now known as Ms. Edie enjoys a day on
the beach with her family. She is the sister of
Tobe and Tina that were adopted out as a bonded
pair by N.A.B.S. All three now know the freedom,
and love of a forever home. We wish this serenity
and freedom for all our rescues.
Just wanted to send along some pics! Otis looves to fall asleep on me like that and he loves his new huge bed! He always has to find the perfect spot to lay down and he loves going exploring under it! The other pic is him and his new sister and one of his new brothers, Maggie and Zack. He’s fitting in great here! I think his favorite part is the backyard to run around in. He loves trying to get under the deck and hide from us and pop out when we aren't look-ing. He's a great boy.
Just wanted to give you a visual update on our guys. Attached are some pics. Thought you might enjoy. We’ve never looked back, it has been a total pleasure having Murphy and Preston in our lives. They both are awesome.
Kind Regards, Felicia & Paul Crawley
HERBAL REMEDIES AND ACUPUNCTURE ByRandy Kidd, DVM, PhD
In addition to healthy table vegetables such as spinach and broccoli,
there are many herbal remedies that help prevent obesity.
When we improve digestion we often help get our dog’s feet moving as
well as his bowels, and many of the digestive herbs such as cayenne (red
pepper) and ginger can help. Sometimes a dog simply needs a little boost
to his system to get him up off the couch and start to move about, and
cayenne or ginger are also a good pep-up- or whole body tonics- as is
ginseng. Finally, if your dog is arthritic, herbal pain killers such as wil-
low bark or meadowsweet may make it easier for him to get up and
about.
Note that whenever medicines, herbal or otherwise, are used as the sole
means for weight reduction, high dosage levels may cause problems.
Acupuncture has been used to treat obese humans and
may be helpful for dogs. Some dogs overeat because
they are overly anxious. Calming remedies such as
lavender aroma misted into his room may be helpful.
Or, try one of the flower essences such as aspen, mi-
mulusm, impatiens, or Rescue Remedy. Talk with
your holistic veterinarian about these.
I like to think of any of the holistic remedies as gentle
helpers for the dog that needs to lose weight, I don’t
try to find a magic bullet that will magically peel off
the pounds. The truest and most reliable weight reduc-
ers are exercise and proper diet, coupled with a home
environment that is both calming and fun.

One by One, they pass by my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can’t run and play.
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old man, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is gray, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn’t belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can’t justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the grey, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond this cage.
You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly, you want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give,
To you, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week, or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear.

THINGS ARE MOVING AT THE SANCTUARY
Page 6 Newsletter Title
View of the inside of the container
from one door down to the other.
This shows the length pretty well but
it does not really look as wide as it
really is. There is plenty of room to
place 16 large kennels down one side
leaving more then enough room to
open kennel doors while standing in
front of them and dogs able to pass
by you. Above the large kennels will
be a table like shelving that will hold
aprox. 19 medium kennels for
smaller dogs. Then above that will be
a long shelf to hold towels blankets
and basic supplies. So ignore the
vision you get when the word con-
tainer is mentioned. It is really a great
set up to get the dogs out to the safety
of the Sanctuary. They will Love it
there!
This is the view of how large the two
windows are for extra air flow. Pam
is planning to attach fencing panels to
prevent any dogs from jumping in or
out through them.
This shows the side of the container that
has the two large windows. There will be
plenty of air flow as there is always a
strong breeze blowing out there.
Things have been on the move down at the Sanctuary. The city of Alvin has passed their ordi-
nance of limiting how many dogs to a home, so Pam has been working hard on getting her
dogs moved to the safety of the Sanctuary.
Two large containers (8’x40’ and 9.5’ high) have been purchased and one is already in place
out at the land and the other will be delivered on March 5th. They were customized with 2
large windows (4’x6’each) on one side and doors at each end for proper air flow. They will be
placed side by side on the pad that has been built. There will be a tin roof built to cover both
containers aprox. 40x50 giving a 12’ over hang to help prevent heat, add shade and keep the
rain from coming in the windows when open in the summer. The containers will open out into
10- 25’x40’pens 5 on each side then these pens can be opened out into 5 large play yards on
each side that are 40’x100’ with access to then a 4 acre enclosed area that has a large pond for
the dogs to go swimming and cool off in the summer heat. Pam hopes to do boarding once
completely set up and moved out there, so keep her in mind when you need a place for your
furry family member to stay while you are away.
