2017 has given us much opportunity for reflection of andrecommitment to the values that brought us to thisfield and NAAP. Much of what we had thought were givenparameters have been shattered and tossed aside. Weare forced to consider questions regarding therelationship between mental health and violent behavior, the reality of racial attitudes, seemingly endlessaccusations of sexual harassment, a government thatappears to be imploding, and the deterioration ofinternational relations. We have witnessed the collapse ofpolicy representing a core value of our country, embodiedby Emma Lazarus's words on the Statue of Liberty:

"Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Who in America is not an immigrant or the recentdescendant of one? We pride ourselves on the amazingcontributions and achievements of a society made strongby its blended populations, its welcome diversity. Weacknowledge the flaws and some terrible shortcomingsbut strive to correct them. I have worked with recentrefugees and immigrants who are suddenly fearful thatthe beacon of safety they envisioned will only light theirreturn to danger and suffering. One therapist workingwith Syrian refugees commented, "They've escaped fromthe trauma of war to face the trauma of utter rejection." Alongterm, legal immigrant said, "Many of my friends won'tgo out anymore. They stay home, afraid of beingtargeted, profiled. They've done nothing wrong. They're legal here, but feel betrayed by a system theycan't trust anymore."

Parallel to our country's founding principle, NAAP wasestablished to represent and unite all the psychoanalyticschools of thought. Its organizing membersrecognized the strength of multiple approaches tounderstanding the human psyche and its variabilities, and

the protective power of collaboration. They appreciatedthe richness and power of analytic education centers thatrepresent divergent theories but work toward the commongoal of emotional and social well-being. In these turbulenttimes NAAP continues its mission of unity and of ensuringthe advancement, recognition, and sustainability of theindependent profession of psychoanalysis. We remaincommitted to promoting mental health for individuals––inpersonal relationships and in society––and diversity, social justice, and social responsibility.

We pursued this commitment in 2017 by:

Expanding continuing education opportunities andcredits for psychoanalysts;Hosting our 45th annual conference "Leadership,Narcissism, and Social Responsibility," addressingsome challenges psychoanalysts face in the clinicalarena and the community;Collaborating with ABAP on the continueddevelopment of standards and core competenciesfor psychoanalytic education to help define andrepresent psychoanalysts in the larger professionalcommunity; andSupporting Legislative efforts to attain and maintainrecognition and secure practice for professionalpsychoanalysts.

As an organization, NAAP has its goals. Aspsychoanalysts, we know we live in the process ofmoving toward those goals. And this process requiresrelationship building inside and outside the field, growth inself-awareness, and active professional engagement. We're working on this all the time, and encourage you tojoin us in the process.

Cover Artist AmandaLenox Talks toNAAPNews

Let’s start with your art. How would youdescribe your work?

I mostly create portraits that range in characterstyles. I like to make photo-realistic portraitsusing graphite, but I also like to make verycolorful portraits with oil paints. Overall, I findmyself making images of people with obviousemotion; curious, downtrodden, lighthearted, discerning, confused, and so on.

What’s your background and how has itinfluenced your work as an analyst and anartist?

I train at the Philadelphia School ofPsychoanalysis and PsychoanalyticPsychotherapy Study Center. I have seen myartwork strengthen in content and style sincebeginning my psychoanalytic work. My portfolio,as a whole, serves as a visual example of howpsychoanalysis can play a part in widening aperson's psychic scope over time. I hope to usemy breadth of work to demonstrate this whilede-stigmatizing the process of talking. While therange of my artwork strengthens my cause,

The analyst’s couch is a powerful tool inpsychoanalysis. The couch holds the space where weuncover and create the hidden emotional landscapeof unconscious intrapsychic life. Hyman Spotnitzwrites that when a patient lies on the couch, he or sheexperiences the state associated with REM (rapid-eye-movement) sleep, when most dreams occur. Thisrelaxed but internally active state not only helps us totalk, but to talk so that repressed and fragmentedthoughts and feelings begin to emerge. More .

For Every Echo aNarcissus: The Locus ofAgency in Addiction andExploitationby Renée Obstfeld

It is hardly news that ideological polarization in theUnited States and elsewhere has reached crisislevels; such an observation does precious little toquell resulting existential anxieties. Perhaps we canentertain a modicum of hope if, as analysts, we thinkabout how polarized states can reconcile within theindividuals they treat. Surely these times have madeat least some people from each side more curiousabout the other. They encourage appreciation fornuance and difference within groups of people wemay never have considered very carefully. More .

by Carmine Giordano

In his brilliant study Obsessions: The TwistedCruelty , Dr. Francesco Bisagni, a psychiatristand Jungian psychoanalyst, uses his theoreticalunderstandings––a complex of Post-Jungianand Bionian constructs––to work with patientswho have survived and adjusted to familydisturbances by adopting a variety of defensiveobsessive-compulsive behaviors. Asdemonstrated in numerous case histories, thesepatients prove particularly difficult to treat andanalyze because of their various states ofprimitive psychic functioning, self fragmentation, and chronic implementation of splitting, isolation, and other dissociative mechanisms.More .

A highly significant, compelling workthat deserves the rapt attention oftheorists, psychoanalysts, andlaypeople alike. - Steven Rosen,Emeritus Professor of Psychology,College of Staten Island, City Universityof New York; author of Dreams, Death,Rebirth

In The Order-Disorder Paradox ,psychoanalyst Nathan Schwartz-Salantdraws on nearly 5 decades of researchto present a comprehensive theory oforder and disorder in the human psyche—and its implications for society, theplanet and its people.

In a world with vast and increasing ratesof systematization, there exists changethat results from the hidden side oforder—the disorder that’s wreakinghavoc on our lives, relationships and theenvironment. From a scientific vantagepoint, Schwartz-Salant considers theOrder-Disorder Paradox through lensesas diverse as Jungian theory, alchemyand the I Ching. As we become awareof the Order-Disorder Paradox, we canrenew our sense of meaning on bothmicro and macro scales to betterunderstand, and remedy, theconsequences of the order (andconcomitant disorder) we create.
