Principal Report

Welcome back to the second half of the term. I hope everyone had a productive relaxing mid-term break. The past fortnight has

been one of all systems go, with business as usual and lots of extracurricular activities for our kids...one of the best parts of

Nyngan High School, the many and varied opportunities.

In the coming weeks, many students will be moving forward in their schooling life. Year 12 will begin planning their end of

year celebrations; Year 11 will be preparing for the Preliminary HSC exams; and Years 10, 9 and 8 will be looking forward to

hearing about courses they hope to study for their next years of school. These are exciting yet challenging times, especially for

families of our soon-to-be graduating students.

Over the past couple of weeks, our Year 12 students have been undertaking their Trial HSC Exams before the Higher School

Certificate examinations which begin next term. This can be a stressful time for students and families, however, our students

conducted themselves with grace and diligence, working to the best of their ability. I will endeavour to meet with all Year 12

students in the coming week, to talk about future directions including study and post school pathways and just catch up before

the leave us.

The next few months will be the hardest with lots of study and revision to be done. Some students are preparing for major per-

formances in Drama and Music, whilst others have submitted major projects in IT Timber, Visual Arts and Society & Culture.

These are huge achievements and our whole school wishes the absolute best to all students undertaking major items for their

HSC. I am always in awe of the creativity of our students and enjoy watching, listening and viewing their major pieces, it is a

highlight of the year.

This week we have been focusing on giving each other feedback. Often we get so upset and take things personally, when feed-

back is the only way we can improve in all facets of life. It can feel like a blow to the confidence, however if you can rise

above, you will certainly be a better person, employee, employer, mother, father and even friend. The way we can cope with

feedback is by being resilient, a skill that is becoming harder to come by as mental health issues rise in our society. Resilience

is the ability to recover quickly from the tough times life throws at us. How do we build resilience? By facing adversity, facing

up to challenges, keeping things in perspective, and finding gratitude for the small things in life. It sounds easy, but it can be

difficult. Our students need resilience to face up to the many challenges of being a teenager, particularly our Year 11 and 12s at

this crucial time in their schooling lives.

We have made it through half of the term, and I am grateful every day to work with such an awesome community of staff, stu-

dents and parents. My door is always open or please feel free to call at any time.

Take care of yourselves and each other.

Deputy Report

Welcome Week 7. I hope everyone is rested after midterm break and the busy fortnight the students and staff of Nyngan High

have experienced.

Congratulations to Nyngan High School for once again being selected into School Spectacular 2020 for Aboriginal and Com-

bined Ensembles. Mrs Walsh, Keiro and some Primary Industries students have kicked off with the fundraising by providing

lunch for the NRL Primary Day hosted by Byron Warren with Parramatta legend Nathan Hindmarsh as the guest. Just under

$1000 was raised which has reduced the cost already for the 20 students. Thank you Mrs Walsh, Keiro and Primary Industries

students!

Other opportunities which have been presented to our students were: Primary Industries went to Ag Quip in Gunnedah with

Mrs Walsh and Keiro, a double story bus of students went to Ronny Gibbs in Bourke for netball and football with Mr Mathe-

son, Mr Lennon, Miss Stafford, Mrs Smith, Miss Douglas and Janine, and Mr Casley took some of our Aboriginal students to

Burrendong for a STEM excursion. A special thank you to Veneta Dutton who assisted with transport on the Monday of mid-

term break and Raylene who aided getting the students home safe and sound. Nyngan High School is certainly a land of oppor-

tunity for our students.

Our theme for this week has been:

This message has been very timely for our dedicated Year 12 students as they are receiving their marks from the Trial HSC

examinations. Marks are important but it is quality feedback from their teachers which will provide them the opportunity to

improve; imagine if the feedback equated to another 5, 10 or even 15 marks…

As teachers we are always seeking feedback from our students or each other as we always want to get better at delivering our

lessons and managing our classrooms.

If given the opportunity this week, provide feedback to someone in a constructive manner which will instigate improvement

and positive change.

Until next fortnight.

Japan season in English

Coincidentally a couple of our teachers are looking at Japanese cul-

ture and history at the moment. Stage 4 HSIE has been looking at the

way of the Samurai and Miss Rixon brought in heaps of gear for the

students to study – swords, miniature replications and cardboard mod-

els that were made.

In Society and Culture we’ve just started looking at Japan as part of the

Year 11 study of intercultural commu-nication. Whilst the students appeared sold on the sushi, the J-Pop was another story. I was inclined to agree. Our sushi, whilst looking

like an absolute dog’s breakfast, proved yummy and we had fun experimenting with ingredients and how much wasabi we could handle.

Stage 4 HSIE- Samurai Warriors

This term we have travelled back in time to Me-

dieval Japan and learnt about Shogun rule. Dur-

ing this time Japan was in a power struggle and

was dominated by samurai warriors, with the

most powerful becoming the Shogun. In class

we have been thirsty for knowledge

about the way of the warrior and doing

our best in class to follow the samurai

code of honour- Bushido. The code is based on fair-

ness, justice, self-control, courage and compassion,

which we have integrated into our class focus and

learning goals. The highlight was looking at real

samurai swords from Japan and making samurai

armour. The way of the samurai warrior included

kendo “way of the sword” and of equal importance

was the cultivation of the mind as “the warrior

needs to master the bow and the horses as well as

the brush and the word”. This included meditation, poetry, flower arranging and martial

arts. Below are some snaps of the swords and the cool facts we have learnt this term.

Fast Facts of Samurai Life and Warfare

Samurais were fiercely loyal to their daimyo (lord)

A samurai always carried two swords- his katana, or long sword, and his wakazashi, smaller sword. Samurais could be

punished if they did not carry them

Samurai wives also learnt martial arts so they could protect their homes

Samurais learnt flower arranging and conducted tea ceremonies, still enjoyed in Japan today

When samurais got a new a new sword they would test it out by killing random people

The primary aim of he samurai on the battlefield was head collecting, so they had proof that the enemy was dead and

how many men they killed

Samurais took the head of their friend in battle, so the enemy couldn’t collect it and profit from their death

We have certainly learnt some mind blowing and interesting information this term from our study of Japan under the Shoguns.

Stay tuned for more updates and fun facts from the HSIE classroom!

Ronnie Gibbs Netball

Wednesday 21st August, saw 4 netball teams travel to Bourke for the annual Ronnie Gibbs Cup. With netball passing rugby league with nominations, we walked in to the Davidson Oval knowing there would be some tough competition.

Our 14’s and Opens blue sides played fiercely but unfortunately were knocked out in the fourth round. The girls gained

strength after strength with each game played but not even star players Abbey and Ella could keep the side in the knockout and the team retired also in the fourth round.

Our 14’s and Open Red sides had strong defence and killer shooting but were knocked out in the first semi finals to Trangie who ended up going all the way to the Grand Final.

The girls all displayed exemplary behaviour and were an absolute please to take away. Well done to the following: Jasmine,

Lucy-Jane, Clare, Meg, Claire Piper, Claire Robb, Charlotte, Brie, Victoria, Kearah, Ashleigh, Whitney, Ella, Angela, Ebony Wynne, Ebony Martin, Jayne, Brooke, Katelyn, Amber, Amy, Serenity, Abbie, Billi, Anastasia, Bailee, Fallon, Lilly, Jaynie,

Millie, Reagan, Katie, Saranna, Lily, Harley and Ella. A big shout out to Janine, Tegan, Lily Smith and Ebony Martin for um-piring for the day.

Ronnie Gibbs Football

The weather was gorgeous, the oval half dead, as Nyngan High travelled to Bourke to partake in yet another Ronny Gibb's gala

day. The boys aged 14 and under were hell bent on going one better than last year, where they were defeated in a close fought

final, whilst our older boys were determined to win their third consecutive final, a feat not even achieved by past legends such

as Matheson, Warren and Woods.

The 14's were a class above from the very first game, as the Black brothers, Cooper and Will, put on a footballing masterclass,

their combination rivalled only, in my opinion, by the Johns brothers and Cronk, Smith and Slater. These boys have unlimited

potential and, if they can remain injury free and keep their egos in check, the NRL will be calling in the not too distant future. I

guarantee it. Nine tries for Cooper and eight for Will across the day is probably a clear indicator of their dominance, but it

doesn’t tell the whole story because it’s the little things they do that really set them apart.

They weren't lone wolves though, as two versus seven typically doesn't work out too well, unless of course you are The Rock

and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Darcy Yeomans, a young man who I had doubted would handle the pace of Seven's rugby league,

was a machine. He laid a strong platform up front with his carries and defended with great strength and intensity, impressing

not only the coaching staff, but one young lady in the crowd as well. He was well supported by Harry Gudgeon, whose efforts

in attack and defence were immense. The kid is a hard worker, a quiet achiever and an extremely underrated talent.

Isac Drady was another who really stepped up, leading our line speed and showcasing a vast array of skills not many knew he

possessed. His chip and chase for Will to score was something straight out of the Josh Merritt playbook and left the large

crowd in attendance equal parts amazed and in awe.

Connor Burley, a young man who has blazing speed and blinding acceleration was a little quiet to start proceedings. Things

soon changed though, once he spotted a familiar face in the crowd. Andrew Burley had somehow conned Essential Energy into

sending him to Bourke to replace a couple of light bulbs in the oval lights, and just the sight of him turned Connor into the sec-

ond coming of Latrell Mitchell. Line breaks, offloads, handling errors.. you name it, young Burl had it.

Tyson Deebank and Blake Heenan-McLeod also deserve plaudits. Two up and comers who give it their all and never let a soul

down. Tyson, a promising junior footballer until cricket came calling, looked like a seasoned veteran and tackled with authori-

ty. Aunty Cath was proud as punch watching him go about his business. Blake is simply a speed demon. What he lacks in size,

he makes up for with pace and his running game got the boys out of trouble on multiple occasions. He also has a quality hair

game, with many in the crowd asking for his stylists details!

Convincing wins over Brewarrina, NSBA and Cobar saw Nyngan take on Narromine in a tense final. The Black brothers

scored all four tries as Nyngan finished victors 4-2, leaving the future of rugby league at Nyngan High looking bright.

Our Open’s boys entered the day confident of success, as the side comprised many members of our champion Tom Kemp side.

With Captain Terrance Ryan and Vice-Captain and human highlight reel Cale Dunn leading from the front, our boys were nev-

er really troubled.

A 9-1 win over hosts Bourke laid the platform for what was to come. Intensity both defensively and with ball in hand saw Nyn-

gan leave their opposition with no answers as Sonny Knight and local lothario Jackson Cox ran riot, combining for 6 scintillat-

ing tries. Everbody knows the talent Sonny possesses, it’s just imperative he stays on the straight and narrow. He could be any-

thing that boy.

Jackson is another kid with oodles of potential and tons of confidence. Maybe too much at times, but plenty of ability to go

with it, and, when coupled with a newfound aggression and intensity, his opponents had very few answers. A couple of long

range efforts had the crowd, particularly the girls, in raptures.

A clash with a large, physical and intimidating Walgett side was next on the agenda and it is fair to say a couple of our boys

were “a shakin in their shoes”. Not Will Richards and Rory Quarmby though. Two of the younger members of our side, these

boys never took a backward step, carrying the ball hard and tackling even harder. Year 9 up against Year 12 never looked so

easy and after Xander and Sonny fired up, Walgett had no chance, Nyngan running away with a convincing 6-1 win.

A surprisingly difficult game against NSBA was next with our boys having a real tough time defending their all out attack. All

NSBA did was chip over the top and regather, some of their players seemingly having the ball on a string and initially, our

boys had very few answers.

Page 7: N Y N G A N H I G H S C H O O L...strength after strength with each game played but not even star players Abbey and Ella could keep the side in the knockout and the team retired also

Enter Billiam Quarmby, who, for one game, turned from prop forward to halfback, looking like a late career Arthur Beetson.

Sonny scored 5 tries in this one, but he had Bill to thank for almost all of them. Offload..bang! Short ball.. bang! Cut out pass

across five teammates… Didn’t happen. But the thing is, it could have. It wasn’t just his ball playing though that was excep-

tional, he also upped his running game, looking a lot like Jeff Lennon running out against a Forbes side that had no idea what

was about to hit them.

A 6-4 victory setting up a mouth watering clash with a big, mobile and skilful Brewarrina side who were desperate to ensure

Nyngan left without the shield for the first time in a long time.

The final was, in all honesty, an anti-climax. Brewarrina had no answer to the power of Sonny Knight, the speed of Dean Fitza-

lan and the skill of Reg Herbert. The energy of Jackson Cox, the flair of Cale Dunn and the aggression of Xander Wood was

also too much to handle, as was the sheer size of the Quarmby brothers, Rory and Bill. The defensive ability of Terrance Ryan

and the sheer determination of Will Richards was the icing on the cake and a 5-1 victory was a fitting result for a side far too

skilled, far too dominant and far too well coached for their peers to handle.

A great day full of great behaviour, great sportsmanship and great conversation. Well done to all and sundry.

Maths

Stage 4 Maths have finished their work on graphing straight lines and are cur rently moving onto learning par ts of a

circle, calculating the area of a circle and the volume of cylinders.

04ENE have been a ton of fun. Singing songs, reading books and learning words has never been more enjoyable. Whilst

learning new language techniques and vocabulary can be exciting, so too can listening to Tommy Tutone and remembering

Jenny’s number. Bridge to Terabithia and Jess and Leslie’s budding friendship has also captured both our hearts and our collec-

tive imaginations.

Stage 5 Maths have moved from statistics and onto propor tion where they have been provided with real life applications

of earning an income. No surprise students thought their rate of pay should be a little more inflated than what is the reality.

Stage 6 Maths are getting more excited as their final time for year 11 is coming to a close. Year 12 have completed their

final exams before the dreaded HSC begins. They will be receiving feedback from their teachers to improve their practice.

Music

Stage 4 have been working on their compositions and have begun learning to use GarageBand to create music to fit a scene of their choice. An Alfred Hitchcock theme is being channelled with Horror scenes apparently on their minds a fair bit. Kudos to Meg M, Brydie and Ella for the terrifying screams that they added to their piece for added effect. Stage 5 are also star ting their compositions, a shout out to Chyshanna and Holly's piece which I am sure will r ival Pink Floyds 'Another Brick in the Wall'. Stage 6 students have finished their tr ials and will now be focusing on fine tuning their per formances and skills. A shout out to Naite’s short lived career as a page turner during Tuesdays practice run. J Lennon Maths

TAS Report Congratulations to Year 12 on conducting themselves in a professional manner while completing their Trial exams. It is now time to get constructive feedback and make the changes to your study pattern to meet your needs. Past papers are a great way of revising and as teachers we love being swamped with this form of revision to mark. A big thankyou to my trusty Year 11 students who assisted Keiro and I with a BBQ for the NRL visitors to Nyngan last week This was a fundraiser for school spectacular. It is great to see the Stage 5 Metal students working hard. Although it is a noisy place to visit, it is extremely rewarding to see the students so engaged in their manufacturing of their BBQ’s and bike stands. Year 9/10 boys have the opportunity to attend TAFE Term 4 for the YES Program. Notes must be collected and returned by Tuesday 3rd September. No late applications are accepted. Year 10 Work Experience forms for Term 4 are available and due in on the 20th September. No late applications will be ac-cepted. N Walsh TAS Head Teacher AgQuip Congratulations to the wonderful nine Stage 6 Primary Industries students that Keiro and I had the pleasure of taking away to

AgQuip. It was a awesome experience seeing so many positive faces and attitudes in the agricultural sector, considering we are

experiencing an awful drought.

The students of course were perfectly behaved and excellent ambassadors for Nyngan High School.

Book Week Went off!

Murder Mystery Monday!

The mystery turned out to be much harder than first

anticipated with some of the initial 6 teams giving up the

first day. But rewards went to the determined, and Jas-

mine and Jacob took out the first prize of a $20 canteen

voucher, closely followed by the team of Shelby, Grace,

& Charlotte.

Hogwarts in the library!

The library was overtaken by aspects of the Wizard world this week, in the

lead up to Week 9 when the Escape Room will be in full swing. A bunch

of very attentive students helped test run the game during Wednesday

when the bulk of the school was at Ronnie Gibbs and the overall consen-

sus was very positive.

So in Week 9 students with either zero or only one negative Sentral entry

will be invited to participate during one of their classes. If there are stu-

dents who know that they have entries but would still like to have a go,

come and see me, we will arrange a time during lunch or recess or after

school.
