SAN ANTONIO – When the church gathered at the Northern Oaks building for the Enhanced Bible Study sessions this fall, she broke records and brought in technology to become “all things to all people that by all means,” His Word would win some.

For many years, the top attendance number at the Thursday night meetings held steady at 49 students and teachers. But when the fall term began recently, the numbers reached into the high 40s and tipped off the organizers that the record was being threatened.

On Sept. 19, Jim Word of the Natalia church of Christ counted 51 persons enjoying the chicken casserole, the lesson on John 13 brought by Joseph McWhorter of Canyon Lake and Raoul Ferris’ impassioned plea on “How to Remember the Sacrifice.”

For the first time also, Deacon Mark McNeill of the LaVernia congregation is recording the sessions this term. They can be found and streamed on the LaVernia church’s social media site. Minister

Wayne Robbins and his son, Vincent, regularly help with the logistics.

This year, these congregations were represented: Canyon Lake, Hondo, Johnson City, the Lake Country church

The study will convene again in the spring on each Thursday evening with a potluck at 6:30 followed by two class sessions. For more information, contact Minister Mel Hutzler at the church office: 210-496-1346.

I have just been to “the happiest place on earth!” I knew it when I stood on the road that led to the castle, our daughter on my left and our grandson on my right. It was beautiful, and I got a little misty-eyed with happiness. So did our daughter, as she was now showing that happiest place on earth to her son.

On this trip, my husband Sid and I were there with our son and our daughter, and their families. We were all together; we were safe together; we had each other. It was good.

Those who worked at the happiest place on earth did all in their power to keep us happy;

our wish was their command. Those who were residents there exhibited only positive qualities: Belle was loving, Snow White was full of joy, Sleeping Beauty was kind, Cinderella was gentle, Ariel was full of hope, and Goofy was, well, goofy.

Beauty was everywhere we looked. At night, the sparkling lights of the fireworks amazed us. Those of us visiting The Kingdom were caught up in all of this, and could not help but smile – a LOT! We were finally here! And it was worth all the scrimping and saving to get here.

The Kingdom was the place “where dreams come true.” The one who had prepared The

At a recent Sunday evening visit to a local assisted living center, one of my church friends, John McKinney, gave an outstanding devotional talk concerning the topic of growing old. Of course, all the residents in attendance were quite advanced in age, in their 80’s and 90’s, and a former attendee had lived to the ripe old age of 102. The members of our own group

were hardly spring chickens either, all of us being in our 70’s.

John’s well-chosen reflections that evening caused me to think more seriously about the reality of aging in a culture that tends to avoid the topic and focuses on squeezing as much pleasure out of old age as possible. Yet the 19th-century English poet Robert Browning got it right when he began one of his poems with the words,

Come grow old with me,The best is yet to be,The last for which the first was made.I remember that the cynical professor of the

graduate course in Victorian poetry that I took many years ago dismissed this kind of reflection as mawkish and sentimental, and I might have agreed with him back in my youth, but not now—old age has much to offer.

I will admit that getting old has frequently been treated negatively through the ages. For example, one of the ancient Greek myths deflated the topic by having a minor goddess fall in love with a mortal named Tithonus. When she promised

him any gift he wanted, he predictably asked for immortality but neglected to ask for immortal youth. As a result Tithonus kept getting older and more feeble until the supreme goddess, Hera, out of pity(?), transformed him into a grasshopper.

Much later, Jonathan Swift, the 18th-century English satirist, devoted a lesser known section of his famous satirical fantasy, “Gulliver’s Travels,” to a pathetic group of people whom the narrator called “Strulbrugs.” Like Tithonus, they kept getting older and older and longed for the release of death, but they were unable to die. Perhaps Swift was foreseeing his own pathetic old age, when his caretakers would charge a fee to observe him in his dotage.

Even the Old Testament occasionally treats old age in negative terms. Psalm 90, “a Prayer of Moses,” laments that “Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures, yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away” (v. 10 NIV).

The grasshopper image is used again in Ecclesiastes 12 to describe old age, where the grasshopper drags itself along and “desire no longer is stirred” (v. 5). This dim view of aging is expanded in the same chapter by referring figuratively to the loss of stature, loss of teeth, failure of eyesight, and fear of heights, etc. (vss. 3-5). The mention of the severed silver cord and the broken golden bowl in verse 6 may allude indirectly to failure of the brain and the nervous system.

Fortunately, both testaments refer to old age more positively than negatively. Some of the greatest heroes, such as Abraham, Moses, and Joshua, lived extremely long and productive lives. Heroic women, like Sarah

and Anna, bore a son in old age. And consider the Apostle John’s advanced age when he composed the Book of Revelation on Patmos.

Numerous times, major figures in the Old Testament died at a “good old age,” including David, who “enjoyed long life, wealth, and honor” (1 Chron. 29:28). A key O.T. passage in this context appears in Psalm 92: “The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, . . . They will still bear fruit in old age” (vss. 12,14).

I can think of several individuals and couples of significantly advanced age in my own congregation who fit this description and have provided outstanding role models. They exemplify the familiar adage, “I would rather wear out than rust out.” The Apostle Paul described life’s declining years similarly, yet more elegantly, when he wrote, “Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (2 Cor. 4:16).

by Paul McQuienAUSTIN – Praying that “This GMC clarifies your vision, strengthens

your resolve and opens new doors for you,” the fifth Global Missions Conference convened in Austin from Oct. 10-12 at the Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ and her Christian School. Organized by World Bible School located in nearby Cedar Park, the Conference focused on “Deep and Wide: Exploring Missions Dimensions” through a comprehensive “gathering of Churches of Christ to advance domestic and global outreach.”

In his welcoming statement, John Reese, steering committee chair, explained that “Wide” refers to the global scope of the Great Commission and “Deep” refers to making mature disciples who diligently pursue Christ’s will. During the conference, scores of presenters and volunteers worked together to help the hundreds of people

in attendance accomplish this goal. In one presentation, perhaps because of Australia’s extreme distance from

the U.S., Reese and George Funk, Director of Gospel Chariot Missions in Perth, Australia, carried on a video chat.

The 60-plus plenary and breakout sessions during the three days of the Global Missions Conference provided such an embarrassment of riches that it was impossible to take in all of them. But it was helpful to see that they were divided into three large categories: theology, methods, and history. These were further subdivided into more specific topics, making it easier for individual participants to choose sessions which appealed most to them.

Some of the sessions focused on answering the call to get involved in mission work, while others focused on specific problems and challenges that confronted missionaries. Some of the presentations gave inspiring reports on recent successes in difficult mission fields, especially among Muslims. Perhaps it’s a bit ironic that Brentwood Oaks is located next-door to the Austin Islamic Community Center.

Because of my personal involvement in World Bible School, I especially enjoyed the Friday morning session conducted by Tom Langley of World English Institute and Tim Yeager of WBS. Tom demonstrated how WEI has made significant progress by combining Internet English instruction

with Bible teaching and how it has successfully penetrated foreign Islamic communities.

Tim Yeager followed up with comments on the WBS’s successes both locally and abroad, and how easy it is to use this on-line approach to missions. Tim also presented a separate helpful session on how to construct an effective church website, explaining, among other points, the importance of featuring people as opposed to buildings.

A Saturday morning session which I enjoyed was Bill Colwell’s “Reaching Unreached Areas.” This WBS presenter focused on reaching interested individuals in faraway places, but also in one’s own locality. He gave specific instructions on how prospective teachers can use the WBS Resources link to accomplish this goal. He was ably assisted by WBS’s Edie Connel, who provided advice on “helping serious seekers complete their obedience to the Gospel call.”

In addition to hundreds of participants from Texas and other states, attendees and presenters came from such places as Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific, India, Europe, and, especially, Africa.

The next Global Missions Conference is scheduled for Oct. 1-4, 2020, at Harding University’s Camp Tahkodah. This Ozark Mountain location (5095 Camp Tahkodah Road Floral, AR 72534) isn’t as convenient for Texans as Austin, but based on my experience with the 2019 Conference, it will be well worth the trip for those who are able to attend.

eeM braces to meet demand for the WordSOUTH TEXAS – God’s Word changes lives. Give

God’s Word. These truths are guiding the 2019 Eastern European Mission Million Dollar Sunday efforts this year. Special collections will be taken up at several congregations throughout the region this month.

Five dollars can deliver a Bible to someone who wants one and who lives in a country where the Word is hard to get. The Pleasanton elders called on the church for donations on Oct. 13. Their gift will

be pooled with others to fill requests for Bibles that EEM has received.

Requests have poured in from individuals, students, institutions and organizations in Ukraine, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Greece, Serbia, Romania, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Russia.

Said Regional Director, Monty Tuttle: “EEM is being challenged in unprecedented ways. It operates largely by responding to requests for Bibles. Let’s

just say that requests are up! Way up! We need our partners now more than ever.”

EEM is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. To give, mail a check to Eastern European Mission, PO Box 55245, Hurst Texas, 76054 and indicate MDS in the memo line, or call EEM at 1-800-486-1818. Online, credit card donations may be made at eem.org through the Donate link.

Kingdom, Walt Disney, was quoted as saying, “When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably.” He also once said, “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”

Of course, Disney World and Disneyland are not perfect. They are physical places where tired parents sometimes carry crying babies and lead cranky children down Main Street in sweltering heat. The workers’ patience probably wears quite thin at times. The residents must often feel dumbfounded by the visitors’ demands. People get sick and angry. The lines are long, and rides break down.

In contrast, Jesus declares, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:2). He refers to the spiritual

Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus, the Preparer, reassures His apostles: “Let not your hearts be troubled; believe In God, believe also in me” (John 14:1).

Belief needs to be implicit and unquestioning, says the Lord: “What is impossible with man is possible with God” (Luke 18:27). Jesus is referring to how man could possibly enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

When John saw Heaven while exiled on the Isle of Patmos, he described it in Revelation 21. It is a city of pure gold with a foundation of jewels, gates of pearls, and walls of jasper; the street of the city is pure gold. No sun or moon is needed because the glory of God is its

light, and its lamp is the Lamb. John declares that “God’s dwelling place is now

among the people… He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (Rev. 21: 3-4). And yes, there is a castle: “Its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb” (Rev. 21: 22).

The Kingdom of Heaven – the happiest place of all time! I think when we join hands to enter our Father’s Kingdom on the Last Day, we will get misty-eyed with happiness to bask in His up-close-and-personal, 24/7 Presence: the Father, God Almighty, Most Holy, Most High! And the First One to chortle, “It’s kind of fun to do

the impossible.”BY MARSHA

continued: My Father’s Happy Place life with Father by Marsha Dowell

by Mark Hammitt and Thankful WriterAs the cool breezes of fall usher in the holiday season, hearts turn

toward giving thanks. Some are grateful to the One to Whom the winds render obedience and to Whom it all belongs. Mark Hammitt of the Weber Road church of Christ in Corpus Christi made the following points last year during the year-end budget process. His acknowledgements focus the meaning of giving thanks in its most significant perspective:

As we consider giving back to God, let’s briefly examine the greatest Giver of all eternity, God, our Father. Paul writes: God “gives us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Tim. 6:17).

First, God gives us life: “God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them … And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Gen. 1:27, 2:7). Just the fact that we exist is a tribute to our Creator. Life is a blessing for which we should be eternally thankful.

Second, God gave his son. There is not a gift more precious to the Father than His own Son. Yet, “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). If you ever feel unimportant or down in the dumps, consider that the heavenly Father loves you so much that He gave His Son so that you may have eternal life (John 3:16).

Third, God gives eternal life. We can purchase many things, but not eternal life. It is a gift from God that only He chooses to give and only to all who are in Christ: “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son” (1 John 5:11). Because of this grace, we should do all we can to please God and live in Christ (Rom. 6:1-11; Galatians 3:26-28)

Fourth, God gives salvation. While the eternal-life part of this gift awaits us in time, salvation is something we can enjoy during this life on earth today. Imagine remembering that you are saved and forgiven by God each day. What a wonderful life that awareness creates, right?

The great thing is that we don’t have to imagine because salvation is possible for all mankind. Peter writes, “You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot”(1 Peter 1:18-19). Paul writes, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2). God gives salvation freely to all those who obey the powerful and effective gospel of Christ (Rom. 1:16).

These four gifts from God are not conclusive. We could list many more things for which to be thankful. These are, however, four things that influence the attitude and practice when we express gratitude and give back to the Lord. There is no other place from which

we can get nor person who will give us the breath of life, the Son of God, eternal life, and salvation, only our Father in heaven.

Hammitt concludes with these thoughts and the verse from Romans: Our God is a generous giver and, as His children, we live to be more and more like Him every day, to reflect Him in all areas of our Christian lives: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And

do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Rom. 12:1-2).”

The apostle whom Jesus loves writes, “The Son can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does…. Whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked” (John 5:19; I John 2:6). Give as He gives?

Happy Thanksgiving!

By Harland R. Huntoon with Robert Parker SAN ANTONIO -- Solomon’s wisdom

seems most fitting as we begin our journey with this good man, “Time and chance happen to all mankind” (Eccl. 9:11.) Describing some extraordinary occurrence we sometimes begin, “I just can’t make this up!” This is one of those times.

The morning of October 13, 2017, seemed to be an ominous date to some, because yes, it was a Friday. At his home in Del Rio, Robert Parker planned to work in his shop that day. He and his adult sons, Troy and Travis had been building an addition and Robert went out to clean up some tools.

As he lifted a box, he tripped and fell. Reaching out to lessen the impact, his left hand struck a maize fork by a table. As he hit the floor, one of the long tines pierced his hand. Hearing him shout, his wife, Marlu ran out and quickly drove him to the Medical Center Emergency Room.

He was treated there for about two hours. The tine had missed all bones and maybe, Robert

Gifts and MemorialsSAN ANTONIO -- For a nominal donation, publications

such as ours can often help commemorate your special events and the fond memories of those who have gone on. If you or your family would like to send a donation to honor a person, memory, event, or ministry, we will publish the relevant information and send a letter. Mail in the donation with the completed form below to initiate the tribute process. mail it to Christian News of South Texas, P. O. Box 34793, San Antonio, TX 78265-4793

Dear Christian News Readers,

At this time of the year, we pause to give thanks for the many blessings that

have come our way. The editors, writers, production staff and board of directors

of the Christian News of South Texas feel especially fortunate that we get to work

hand in hand with you and that we have had your ongoing support in the Lord’s

work.We are winding up more than 40 years of reporting on the church of Christ

whose members serve in the area from San Antonio to the Rio Grande Valley.

Thanks to you, the Christian News goes out by mail to more than 5,000

households to encourage, inspire, edify and inform the body of Christ each

month. You have been with us all the way as we

tried to answer this question: “If Barnabas

had begun publishing a newspaper in 1979

that would glorify the Lord with what He

was doing with the church here, what would

that look like?” You let us help you invite

visitors to your gospel meetings, introduce

your new minister, celebrate 50, 25, and 3

years of meeting in the same location, honor

those married 50 years or more, share the joy in the accomplishments of your

members and children, grieve for and with you as we lost brothers and sisters

and rejoice together with you because we know where they are.

Along with print media in general, however, we are weathering the change

that comes with technology and the years. You helped us get through a lean time

a few years ago when we almost closed the door. This year, concerns are rising

again because advertising and donations both have begun to drop significantly. It

may get serious soon.

So as stewards of God’s gifts, we come to you at this time to say, “Thank you

for coming this far with us.” We also ask that you take the time to write a check

so that we may continue to work alongside you. The writers, editors, board

members, mailing manager, and the business and ad managers volunteer their

time. The ad revenue covers a significant amount of the publishing costs, but

your donation is needed to take care of the rest. We cannot do it without you.

Please use the coupon printed in this issue. Your gift is important and we

appreciate your generosity. Thank you.

“if Barnabas had begun

publishing a newspaper

in 1979 that would glorify

the lord with what He

was doing with the

church here, what would

that look like?”
