Ann did provide a print-ed resource about care-giving, titled the “Prepare to Care” booklet (A Planning Guide for Families). It helps explain the process of how to work with your loved ones that are reach-ing their stage of life where living independently is no longer an option. Online resources available include the Iowa Area Agency on Aging (www.iowaag-ing.gov) and AARP Caregiving Resource Center (http://www.aarp.org/home-family/caregiving/planning-and-resources.html). Ann also asked that if you have a caregiver story to share, that you go to www.aarp.org/iheartcaregiving and tell your story. There is a drop down menu with a link to the Iowa stories.

Youth Exchange- Are you interested in learn-ing a new language or meeting new people? Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. By sharing your own culture and embracing a new one, you help foster global understanding—and learn a great deal about yourself and your home country in the process.Exchanges are for people ages 15–19 who have demonstrated leadership in their school and community, are flexible and willing to try new things, are open to cultural differences, and can serve as an ambassador for their own country.Costs vary from country to country. Local Rotary clubs generously host students and provide room and board with a host family and a small monthly stipend. Partici-pants are generally responsible for round-trip airfare, insurance, travel documents (such as passports and visas), and spending money, additional travel, and tour fees.
Thanks to Chuck Corwin for juggling the speaker schedule and booking a speaker on short notice. Ann Black from AARP filled in ably and provid-ed the club with a very good program. During our meeting we also wel-comed Assistant District
Governor, Chris Nelson. A special thanks to Chris for attending as well.
Last week, we explored the Peace Fellow-ship Program. Rotary has an abundance of programs and another such program is Youth Exchange such. Over the years, NW Des Moines Rotary has worked with many out-bound Youth Exchange students. Rotary.org shares this information about the Youth Ex-change Program. 2014-15 Officers & Directors

Our speaker today was Ann Black, the Associate Director for Communication for AARP Iowa. Ann’s message was about Caregiving. Currently in the U.S. there are an estimated 45 million unpaid caregivers, pri-marily family members, caring for others. In Iowa, there are an estimated 540,000 caregiv-ers. Two-thirds are women with an average age of 49 who spend 20 hours a week caring for others. The normal duration for caregiv-ing is five years. Three goals of AARP regarding Caregiving are Awareness, Advocacy and Caring for the Caregivers.AARP is currently lobbying the Iowa Legislature for the passage of model legisla-tion called the Caregiver Advise Record Enable Act (CARE) to better support family caregivers as they safely help Iowa seniors stay at home.

Polio UpdateGlobal Polio Eradication Initiative
As of January 14, 2015
More than 6 months have passed since the most recent case of wild poliovirus in central Africa was detected in Cameroon on the 9 July 2014. This indicates that progress towards stopping the outbreak in this region is being made. How-ever, outbreak response activities must continue and subnational surveillance systems strength-ened to ensure the rapid detection of any residual transmission.
More than a year has passed since the last case of wild poliovirus in Ethiopia. With the most recent wild poliovirus case in the Horn of Africa detect-ed in August 2014 in Somalia, outbreak response across the region is continuing.
No new cases of wild poliovirus have been reported anywhere in the world this week.

No—I Prefer to PushRecently, I woke up to find that two of my car’s tires had been stolen. When the police officer arrived, he asked, “When were you last driving the car?”
“Last night at 11:00,” I said.
“And the tires were on it then?”
