Living with a Healthy Liver
Vedaanta Seniorz Today Vol.1 Issue 3 April 2015 www.vedaanta.com5
Living with a Healthy Liver
Liver is the powerhouse of the human
body. The silent tireless worker of our
body who seldom complains;but when
it complains, that means it has hit the
end of the road.
The liver measures about 1.5 kg and sits
on the right side of upper part of our
belly. It performs more than 500
extremely complex functions that
i nc lude d iges t ion o f p ro te ins ,
detoxification of medicines and poisons
consumed, it is the largest factory of
different proteins that the body needs
for various functions including clotting
of blood, it makes several hormones and
vitamins. Unlike the heart whose
functions can be temporarily replaced
by an artificial pump and the kidney can
be substituted by a dialysis machine,
“Until recently there was no effective cure
for this virus making it even more dangerous
than HIV. However, a few recent discoveries offer hope.”
there is no machine made yet that can
even temporarily replace the liver.
thThe world liver day on 19 April is
symbolic of our commitment to liver
health through a better understanding of
liver disease and employment of
preventive healthcare strategies.
“Most forms of liver disease are therefore similar to 'Silent Killers'. They don't give warning signs.”
Common forms of liver disease in our
country include:
1. Hepatitis B:
§ Affects about 4-5% of our total
population.
§ One out of 5 patients with Hepatitis B
develop either liver cirrhosis or liver
cancer.
§ This virus spreads through blood and
blood products. Sharing infected
needles, razors etc should be avoided
§ Highly effective vaccination is
available for children and adults
§ If detected early, the virus is
completely curable, patients with
cirrhosis and liver cancer can undergo
liver surgery or transplantation.
“Please check your Australia Antigen
(HBsAg) status today and immunize
yourself if you are negative for life long
protection against hepatitis B.”
2. Hepatitis C:
§ Affects about 2.5% of total Indian
population. § Similar risk of liver cirrhosis and
cancer as Hepatitis B.§ Spread similar to Hepatitis B although
at a lesser rate.§ No effective vaccine or treatment.
Health
www.vedaanta.com Vedaanta Seniorz Today Vol.1 Issue 3 April 2015 6
3. Alcoholism:
§ Affects about 2-3% of our society§ Disease as old as mankind.§ The liver dies a slow but definite death
with every glass consumed. § There is NOTHING like a 'good/safe
drinking habit'.
“If alcohol is getting the better of you,
please talk to your liver doctor on how to
reduce the potential for harm. Never
drink alone, never on an empty stomach,
never drink without long gaps in time
between to allow the liver to repair
itself.”
4. Fatty Livers:
§ A minor degree of fat storage in the
liver is not rare and is found in healthy
individuals. § The fatty liver can also signify an
underlying serious form of early liver
disease such as hepatitis B, C etc. § However, it assumes significance in the
context of its being secondary to over-
nutrition and obesity. The condition is
called 'Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver
Disease' (NAFLD). § This fat when inflamed leads to the
condition called 'Non-Alcoholic Steato-
Hepatitis' (NASH) that leads to cirrhosis
a n d m a y n e c e s s i t a t e l i v e r
transplantation. The rising epidemic of
obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and
poor life-style has made this liver
condition even more common than any
other form of liver disease.
The fatty liver disease is essentially
curable via change to a healthier life
style, better control of diabetes and
cholesterol levels, regular exercises 'and
without any medicines'.
5. Liver Trivia:
§ Liver disease start silently and progress
dangerously, making prevention the key
to freedom from liver disease.§ Jaundice, swollen legs and belly,
vomiting of blood, significant weight
loss and cachexia are the non-specific
ways in which liver diseases present. Do
not ignore them.§ Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Alcoholism
and fatty livers comprise more than 10%
of our total population and no other
single organ in the body has a disease rate
more than the liver. However, the
majority of these diseases can be
prevented and treated if one is aware and
acts responsibly. § The liver is the only organ in the body
that has the unique property of
'regeneration'. This allows living donor
liver transplantation without any loss to
the donor. The donated liver regenerates
within about 2 months in both, the donor
and recipients. This is a safe procedure
with high success rate and saves many
lives.§ Even children get liver disease. Some
are even born with it. Liver disease in
children can be treated and even children
undergo l iver t ransplantat ion i f
necessary.§ Liver cancer is best treated with liver
transplantation. This should be done at
any early stage for maximum benefit

MAINTENANCE & WELFARE OF
PARENTS & SENIOR CITIZENS,
MAINTENANCE & WELFARE OF
PARENTS & SENIOR CITIZENS,
ACT- 2007.ACT- 2007.
Most of the parents who are senior citizens, today, are
well off, but there is a section of the society where the
parents cannot maintain themselves. Support of children,
be it a daughter or son, is highly required. Maintenance of
Parents and Senior citizen is the responsibility of every
person. In India, the uncared senior citizens including
parents who are unable to maintain themselves from their
own resources or are abandoned by their children, can get
the relief under “The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents
and Senior Citizens Act”. Under this Act, children and
property heirs must take care of the maintenance of their
parents/senior citizens. The purpose of enacting this Act
was to fulfill the gaps in Section 125 of the Code of
Criminal Procedure, 1973 and the personal laws, including
the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956.
The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 has limited
provision for maintenance of parents only and is silent on
welfare measures. Whereas the Maintenance and Welfare
of Parents and Senior citizen Act 2007, has provisions for
maintenance and also looks after the welfare of parents and
senior citizens. It is a comprehensive Act. It has a broader
scope and is not limited to the sphere of parent-child
relationship only. The Act holds the State responsible for
the implementation of welfare measures for senior citizen.
Under the Act “Senior Citizen” means any citizen of India
of 60 years and above whether living in India or abroad.
Cover Story

“Parent” is the father or mother even if not of 60 years yet.
“Children” are adult son, daughter, grandson and
granddaughter. “Relatives” are those who are either in
possession of the property of the senior citizen or would
inherit it.
Parents, even below the age of 60 years, and grandparents
who are unable to maintain themselves from their own
income can demand maintenance from their children and
Childless Senior Citizens who are unable to maintain
themselves from their own income can demand
maintenance from their relatives who are in possession of
or are likely to inherit their property.
Senior citizens who are unable to maintain themselves shall
have the right to apply to a maintenance tribunal seeking a
monthly allowance from their children or heirs.
Maintenance includes provision for food, clothing,
residence, medical attendance and treatment. Maximum
amount which may be ordered for maintenance of a senior
citizen by the Tribunal shall be as prescribed by the State
Government which shall not exceed Rs. 10,000/- per
month.
The application for maintenance may be made by the senior
citizen or parent to the Maintenance Tribunal in layperson's
language giving names, full details and addresses of the
persons from whom they are demanding maintenance. If
there is more than one child or relative, they may claim
maintenance from one or all of them depending on their
means of income.
If such applicants are not capable of making an application
personally, any other person or registered voluntary
organization authorized by him/her can make the
application or the
Tribunal can take
suomotu cognizance
and proceed.
The proceedings
under the provision
of the Act may be
taken against any

Tribunal may also refer the case for reconciliation or pass
interim orders for maintenance.
When a maintenance order is made under this Act, the
children or relative who is required to pay must deposit the
entire amount in such manner as the Tribunal orders, within
30 days from the date of announcing the order by the
Tribunal. Where any Tribunal makes an order for
maintenance under this Act, such Tribunal may also direct
in addition to the amount of maintenance, simple interest to
be paid at the rate which cannot be less than 5% and not
more than 18% from the date of making the application.
If the children or relatives fail to pay the maintenance that is
ordered, without sufficient reason for 3 months after its due
date, the senior citizen can approach the Tribunal again
who may impose a fine or order imprisonment of either 3
months or fine upto Rs.5,000/- or both.
The tribunal may alter the allowance for maintenance on
proof of misrepresentation or mistake of fact or a change in

proof of misrepresentation or mistake of fact or a change in
the circumstance of the senior citizen or parent receiving
the monthly payment.
The Act also provides to declare the transfer of property by
a parent/senior citizen to their children/relative be void in
certain circumstances. Under Section 23(1) of the Act the
senior citizen who has transferred by way of gift or
otherwise, his property, subject to the condition that the
children/relative shall provide the basic amenities and
basic physical needs to the senior citizen and such
children/relative refuses or fails to provide such amenities
and physical needs, the said transfer of property shall be
deemed to have been made by fraud or coercion or under
undue influence and shall at the option of the senior citizen
be declared void by “the Tribunal”.
Further, “Abandoning” a Senior Citizen is an offence under
the Act. Section 24 of the Act provides that whoever,
having the care or protection of senior citizen leaves, such
senior citizen in any place with the intention of wholly
abandoning such senior citizen, shall be punishable with
imprisonment of either description for a term which may
extend to 3 months or fine which may extend to Rs.5,000/-
or with both.
Any senior citizen or a parent, who gets aggrieved by the
order of the Tribunal can prefer an appeal at the Appellate
Tribunal within 60 days from the date of the order.
The State Government shall designate the District Social
Welfare Officer or an officer not below the rank of a District
Social Welfare Officer, by whatever name called as
Maintenance Officer, to represent a parent or senior citizen.
As welfare measure for Senior Citizens the Act provides for
the state government to establish and maintain at least one
old age home per district with a minimum capacity of 150
senior citizens per
home. The state government shall also prescribe a scheme
for the management of such homes. The scheme shall
specify standards and services to be provided including
those required for medical care and entertainment of
residents of these old age homes
The Act also provides for the state government to introduce
following Medical Care to Senior Citizens, like,(i)
providing beds for all senior citizens as far as possible in the
Government hospitals or hospitals funded fully or partially
by the Government;(ii) arranging for separate queues to
senior citizens;(iii) facility for treatment of chronic,
terminal and degenerative diseases is expanded for senior
citizens;(iv) research activities for chronic elderly diseases
and ageing is expanded;(v) earmarking facilities for
geriatric patients in every district hospital duly headed by a
medical officer with experience in geriatric care.
By enforcing the Maintenance and Welfare of parents
and citizens Act, the Government has taken a small
step towards safeguarding the elders of our society. As
a nation, it is every citizen's duty to ensure that Senior
Citizens live a happy, healthy and secure life.

the team game with your spouse
I was in Kolkata, few years back on a
routine visit to a prospect who was to be
introduced by our branch manager. My
manager had met the aged couple number
of times. Their children are married and
settled and are not dependant on them for
their livelihood. The couple , I was briefed
by my Manager, were fairly respectable in
the society , who would offer the basic
courtesy , ask lots of questions and jot
down the answers.
So here I was, to meet someone about
whom I had heard a lot. My manager , was
more than willing to open up our
conversation and leave the rest to me ,
upon reaching their home.
After the basic introduction, possibly , the
couple felt at ease and opened up the
conversat ion and l ivened up the
proceedings. Possibly , my knowledge of
few eastern and south Indian languages
helped, besides my experiences in large
positions and different cities , countries.
After some time, I asked them, whether
they were comfortable , post retirement
and if they would term their management
background to be the reasons behind the
finesse. The answer was more than an yes
but could be jotted down in the following
manner, which has turned to be sagely
advice for me and my members.
It turned out that they did the following:
1.Discussed financial goals at regular
intervals- It turned out that from the age
of 60, post the Sunday breakfast, the
couple used to interact on where they
stood as at the previous month, in terms of
asset , liability, income , expenditure.
2. Share money responsibilities – Since
retirement, the couple had decided that
collection of money was the role of one
while the payment of money was the
o t h e r s . T h e y a l t e r n a t e d t h e i r
responsibility each month so that both
could get a sneak preview as to their
affairs with money. 3. Understand the money flow- Point no
2 , mentioned above, helped them to
delineate the standings clearly and each
could offer a support role to the other.
They were democratic and willing to
listen to the other.
4. Know your existing savings &
investments – The sav ings and
investments made by them were listed on
a sheet and then compared with respect to
the market movements over a quarter.
5.Audit your documents regularly - The investments were listed and kep t i n a ' f o lde r ' spec i a l l y maintained for this purpose. The statements received were neatly filed in a 'Box file'. While one used to read out the contents , the other used to take a pencil and offer a tick against the serial number in the list. 6. Know where all the documents are kept – After ascertaining the facts
and figures out of the points mentioned
Finance
Vedaanta Seniorz Today Vol.1 Issue 3 April 2015 www.vedaanta.com11
above, now they resorted to a more
important task of identifying if any
interest / dividends were not realized
from their bank or not received at all.
Then they got down to writing letters to
the registrars , transfer agents, companies
concerned to escalate the issue. Each of
them knew where the banking, financial
and legal documents were kept. Even if
there was a pitched darkness they could
lay their hands on it as the files and

Some air traffic control conversations for you to L.O.L:
1. It was a really nice day, right about dusk, and a Piper Malibu was being
vectored into a long line of airliners in order to land at Kansas City.
KC Approach: "Malibu three-two Charlie, you're following a 727, one
o'clock and three miles."
Three-two Charlie: "We've got him. We'll follow him."
KC Approach: "Delta 105, your traffic to follow is a Malibu, eleven
o'clock and three miles. Do you have that traffic?"
Delta 105 (in a thick southern drawl, after a long pause): "Well...I've
got something down there. Can't quite tell if it's a Malibu or a
Chevelle.”
2. The controller working a busy pattern told the 727 on downwind to
make a three-sixty--do a complete circle, a move normally used to
provide spacing between aircraft.
The pilot of the 727 complained, "Don't you know it costs us two
thousand dollars to make even a one-eighty in this airplane?"
Without missing a beat the controller replied, "Roger, give me four
thousand dollars' worth."
4. Tower: "Delta 351, you have traffic at 10 o'clock, 6 miles!"
Delta 351: "Give us another hint! We have digital watches!”
5. "Height and position?”Tower:
Pilot: "I am 1,80 m and I'm sitting
Tower: "Have you got enough fuel or not?"
"Yes."Pilot:
"Yes what??"Tower:
"Yes, SIR!”Pilot:

DIY HOME MAKEOVERSTHIS !!SSuu mmmm rreeDIY
Being creative and trying hands-on is the best way to beat boredom for housewives and retirees. And, our home is the best place for us to explore possibilities for a makeover- at minimal or no cost, yet adding beauty to the existing one. DIY (Do-It-Yourself) home décor allows you to customize your home, a part of your home, or even a wall that will transform the space to a new look on a budget that is friendly to your pockets.
It is always a pleasure when someone asks you where you got an item in your home from, the one that you recreated from your creativity. Be it a small change or a complete makeover, a beginner or an expert at work, getting hands on is the most easiest way to freshen up a space and give it a new look. Small changes from re-painting the furniture, adding fringes to your old cushions, adding a double curtain, or giving a new life to your rugs, or adding a curve with mirrors to your living space, a makeover is definitely worth the change. makeover is definitely worth the change.
Bored of ordinary vases? Deck up your living room vase in the hues of your room with this easy method. Pour a small amount of glass paint of your choice into the bottom of your glass vase. Keep tilting the vase in different directions to roll the paint inside to create a wave of colour. Leave the original vase clear to get a new look.
A few DIY makeovers for you to try:
Pocket the remote:
Our days never end without hunting for either the TV, AC, DVD or home theatre remote. And the place we lose it the most is our beds or sofas. Our sofas and beds come loaded with cushions, bolsters or pillows which can be made into remote pockets. Cut an old denim's pocket, or any fabric in the shape of a pocket and stitch that on the cushion to place your remote.
Calendar images become wall art
Old calendars with themed images can make a beautiful piece of tiled frames that can go on a wall, making a lovely wall art.
DIY Veggie prints
Any fabric can be given a facelift with vegetable stamps. Cut pieces of vegetables like onion, ladies fingers, and dip them in fabric paint and stamp them on fabric to create different abstract patterns of your choice.

Well ,this Tamil saying quite well
reflects the significance that elders hold in
the fabric of Indian society. The elderly
are a precious asset for any country. In
several cultures, older people are
accorded an elevated status and respect.
Older people often constitute the social
glue that holds communities together.
With their rich experience and wisdom,
their value addition to home and nation is
immense. Their contribution for
sustenance and progress of the family,
society and nation cannot be overlooked.
Any society or civilization is judged by
the treatment it metes out to its elderly.
While advancement in science and
technology has prolonged life and
increased comforts, the changes it has
brought about on the socio-cultural front
has robbed elders of their status and self-
confidence, and they are not being able to
actively function in the social framework.
Many of the problems that confront aged
people are the fall out of changing
priorities, policies and social practices.
These problems in turn impact their
quality of life and health condition. As age
increases, physiological functions start
deteriorating, and this in turn impacts
one's psychological well being as well.
They tend to feel more dependent and
insecure, and this is when physiological
weaknesses often get transformed into
more serious health problems.
With the disintegration of joint family
system, elderly people are increasingly
turning to external support mechanisms
like senior care homes rather than within
the family.
With an increasingly mobile and
relatively affluent senior population in
India, people have started taking active
interest in planning their retirement.
Many people in the senior age group are
buying retirement homes in desirable
locations, and sometimes even as an
investment option. In this scenario, what
could be the guiding factors in zeroing in
on the right option?

Why Kumbakonam should be your
retirement destination?
Located 40 kms from Thanjavur, 96 kms
from Trichy and 273 kms from Chennai,
Kumbakonam is nestled between two
rivers Cauvery and Arasalar. It is well
connected by rails, road and nearest
airport is Nagapattinam. It has a good
stretch of road network and social
infrastructure. It bustles with economic
activity, at the same time having a
significant 40% of non-urban area and is
predominantly residential area. Being a
delta area, agricultural activity thrives
with extensive lush green paddy fields.
The climate of Kumbakonam is cooler
than Chennai ranging between minimum
of 20° C to maximum of 40° C.
The story behind the name :
Legend has it that Brahma created a
Kumbha (sacred pot) to hold the divine
nector (Amirtham), which got displaced
during Pralaya, and ultimately came to
rest in this place. The Amirtha got mixed
with the sand to form a Lingam which
came to be Kumbeshwarar. Known as the
“Temple Town”, Kumbakonam has more
than 188 temples and several mutts.
Mahamaham festival is held once in 12
years at Kumbakonam. Pilgrimage and
tourism keep this town active and vibrant.
The vedic heritage has been preserved in

tradition of education,
and is known as the
“Cambridge of South
India”, home to many
stalwarts including the
mathematical prodigy
Ramanujam.
Wi th i t s r i ch cu l tu ra l he r i t age ,
Kumbakonam is the house of arts and
crafts, known for its brass utensils, pooja
articles, kuthuvilakku and sculptures. It
is also famous for betel leaves and betel
nuts.
Nostalgia often kindles the desire to recall
fond memories and go back to those
pleasant times spent during childhood,
yearning to relive those carefree moments
and catch up with those moments lost in
the race to earn. For those South Indians
rooted to tradition, the day begins with the
aroma of filter coffee. Which best place to

To sum up, Kumbakonam beckons with
its tradition, rich cultural heritage and
most of all temple attraction.

Malayalam New Year, Vishu, marks the beginning of the
zodiac calendar in Kerala. The most important segments of
Vishu are the Vishu Kani and the Vishu Sadya (feast). The day
dawns in the face of Vishu Kani, a platter arranged with
auspicious things such as gold, danya (grains), fruits, money
and idols. Usually, a decorated Urli (a shallow circular vessel
made of brass) containing raw rice, gold ornaments, yellow
cucumber, vegetables, fruits, a mirror, betel leaves, yellow
flowers, etc., are kept in front of a Krishna/ Guruvayurappan
idol. Traditionally, every member in the family sees the vishu
kani as the first thing on the morning of Vishu, and prays for
good health, prosperity, cheer and love all through the year.
The elders of the family give Vishu Kai Neetam (coins or
money given in occasion of Vishu) to the younger members of
the family.
A traditional, grand, vegetarian feast called the Vishu Sadya is
served on plantain leaves (see pic below) containing most of
the traditional Kerala food items. The breakfast starts with
Vishu Kanji served in a coconut shell, Aval (poha) fry and
neiappam. The lunch feast includes different varieties of
pickles, porridge called 'thoran' in Malayalam, pachadis and
kichadis, Olan, erissery, kootu, curry, aviyal, erissery, parippu
curry, sambar, kalan, moru curry, puliser, ada pradhaman and
many variants based on each one's preferences.
Vishu is one of the major festivals celebrated in Kerala and is
celebrated in pomp and grandeur.

Aqua Aerobics, also known as water
aerobics, is one of the best proven ways to
improve overall well-being for all ages.
For the elderly, aqua aerobics is a better
choice compared to land-based exercises
as it causes lesser joint impact in the
water. This workout relieves from
symptoms associated with senior health
conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis
and circulatory problems. The natural
buoyancy, resistance, soothing effect, and
decreased joint impact makes aqua
aerobics an ideal exercise for senior
citizens.
Water exercises act as a blood pumper,
where the lung capacity will increase,
heart rate will go up, burn fat and reduce
the risk for heart disease. These exercises
also give a better limb coordination, better
sense of balance and decreased risks of
falling. You could try the below water
exercises in the nearby community
swimming pool.
Pool walking:
Start walking from the shallow end of the
pool, and holding the edge of the pool,
walk the length of the pool. Increase your
walking speed which will help you burn
calories and also add resistance to your
lower body muscles.
Leg Swings:
Stand chest deep in water with your right
side rested against the pool wall. Place
your right hand on the pool's side and your
legs straight, lift your left leg forward and
stay upright for 5 seconds. Now swing
your leg back and stay upright for another
5 seconds. Repeat the same for 10 times
and swap the leg. Rest for a few seconds
between swapping your legs.
Full body workout:
Stand chest deep in water and move your
arms and legs back and forth as though
you are skiing. Bend your arms at the
elbow so that your lower arm is parallel to
the pool's bottom. Move your right arm
and your left leg forward and vice versa, a
movementsimilar to walking. Perform
this at a 60-second interval, increasing
your speed at a pace comfortable to you.
Upper body exercise
Raise both of your arms straight in front of
you, keeping them in water. Make small
circles (5 in clockwise and 5 in anti-
clockwise directions) with your arm,
increasing the size of the circle gradually.
Ensure that your arms remain inside water
all through the exercise.

Treatment of GuestsAccording to Scriptures
In Indian scenario a guest in the house, is
t r e a t e d e q u i v a l e n t t o G o d a n d
worshipping them with food and proper
treatment is considered a 'Nruyajnya'
(Human welfare right). The etiquette
shown to the guests, is symbolic to
express some one's duty towards the
ethnic surroundings and has much
ecological implications to improve the
human relationships.
i) Who is a Guest ?A person (outsider), who stays one night
with a host (III/102): who arrives after
sun set, or supper time, or at an
inopportune moment (III/105); a student,
who has arrived after studying the Veda;
or a house holder ar r ived af ter
completing their vows; or a person, who
renounced the world without cooking
food for himself, are to be considered as
guests (IV/31,32).
ii) Who is not a Guest ?A person who dwells in the same village;
one who seeks his livelihood by social
interaction (such as a story teller or
singer) ; the foolish house holders who
constantly seek the food from others (as
if a profession) or a personal friend, or a
relative, or even his own teacher
(III/103,104,110); or a heretics, or a man
who follows forbidden occupations; or
rouges, a logician argues against the
Veda; or hippocrate, who behave like cat
and heron - discussed later), should not
be considered as guests (IV/30).
iii) Specialized GuestsA personal friend and so forth who have
come to the house out of affection, he
should be honoured with food, garnished
according to his ability and should be
allowed to dine even with wife (III/113).
A king, an officiating priest, a learned
man, the teacher, a son-in-law, a father-
in-law, a maternal uncle, should be given
special status of 'guest of honour'
(III/119).
iv) Special TreatmentsA newly married women, a pregnant
women, infant and sick person should be
given food before the guests without
hesitation (III/114). Even if it is
prohibited that the Vaissya and Ssoodra
should not be guests in a Braahmana's
house on their arrival, they should be
treated as guest at par, on the ground of
compassionate disposition (III/112).
v) Importance of GuestsLet him offer a seat, water and
food as well and garnish the
guest according to his ability
(III/ 99). Even if someone is a
poor host, he should at least
offer a mat, water, a place for
rest and few kind words to his
guest (III/101). It is cautioned
that he who prepares food for
himself (alone), eats nothing but
sin (III/118). He must take care
that no guest stays in his house
without being honoured with a
seat, a couch (bed), water and
minimum food as roots and fruits
(IV/29).
Let him not eat any food, which he does
not offer to his guest; and hospitable
reception of guests procures wealth,
fame, long life and heavenly bliss
(III/106). If a second guest comes, after
everything is finished, the householder
must give him food (again prepared)
according to his ability (III/108).
And above all, the householder and his
wife should eat afterwards, what remains
after the guests, kinsmen and servants
have dined (III/116).This reflects the
nobility and highness of Indian culture
and the various social bindings of a
householder. On the contrary, can the
present day householder tolerate the
servant and offer him food before he
eats?! as reflected earlier (II/185;
III/116).d fruits (IV/29).

Offering of food to guests according to Apastamba Sutra – Chapter 39, 40
1.This reception of guests is an everlasting
( S r a u t a ) - s a c r i fi c e o f f e r e d b y t h e
householder to Pragâpati. 1
2. The fire in the stomach of the guest
(represents) the Âhavanîya, (the sacred fire)
in the house of the host represents the
Gârhapatya, the fire at which the food for
the guest is cooked (represents) the fire used
for cooking the sacrificial viands (the
Dakshinâgni). 2
3. He who eats before his guest consumes
the food, the prosperity, the issue, the cattle,
and the merit that his family acquired by
sacrifices and charitable works goes waste.
4. Food (offered to guests) which is mixed
with milk procures the reward of an
Agnishtoma-sacrifice. Food mixed with
clarified butter procures the reward of an
Ukthya, food mixed with honey the reward
of an Atirâtra, food accompanied by meat
the reward of a Dvâdasâha, (food and) water
numerous offspring and long life. 4
5. It is declared in the Veda, 'Both welcome
and indifferent guests procure heaven (for
their host).’
6.When he gives food in the morning, at
noon, and in the evening, (these gifts) are
the Savanas (of that sacrifice offered to
Pragâpati).
7. When he rises after his guest has risen (to
depart), that act represents the Udavasânîyâ
ishti (of a Vedic sacrifice).
8. When he addresses (the guest) kindly,
that kind address (represents) the
Dakshinâ. 8
9. When he follows (his deparng guest, his
steps represent) the steps of Vishnu. 9
10.When he returns (after having
accompanied his guest) , that (act
represents) the Avabhritha, (the finalbath
performed after the completion of a
sacrifice.)
11. Thus (a Brâhmana shall treat) a
Brâhmana, (and a Kshatriya and a Vaisya
their caste-fellows.)
12. If a guest comes to a king, he shall make
(his Purohita) honour him more than
himself. 12
13. If a guest comes to an Agnihotrin, he
himself shall go to meet him and say to
him: 'O faithful fulfiller of thy vows, where
didst thou stay (last night)?' (Then he offers
water, saying): 'O faithful fulfiller of thy
vows, here is water.' (Next he offers milk or
the like, saying): 'O faithful fulfiller of thy
vows, may (these fluids) refresh (thee).'
14. (If the guest stays at the time of the
Agnihotra, he shall make him sit down to
the north of the fire and) murmur in a low
voice, before offering the oblations: 'O
faithful fulfiller of thy vows, may it be as
thy heart desires;' 'O faithful fulfiller of thy
vows, may it be as thy will is;' 'O faithful
fulfiller of thy vows, may it be as thy wish
is;' 'O faithful fulfiller of thy vows, may it
be as thy desire is.'
15. If a guest comes, after the fires have
been placed (on the altar), but before the
oblations have been offered, (the host)
himself shall approach him and say to him:
'O faithful fulfiller of thy vows give me
permission; I wish to sacrifice.' Then he
shall sacrifice, after having received
permission. A Brâhmana declares that he
commits a sin if he sacrifices without
permission.
16. He who entertains guests for one night
obtains earthly happiness, a second night
gains the middle air, a third heavenly bliss,
a fourth the world of unsurpassable bliss;
many nights procure endless worlds. That
many nights procure endless worlds. That
has been declared in the Veda.
17. If an unlearned person who pretends
to be (worthy of the appellation) 'guest'
comes to him, he shall give him a seat,
water, and food, (thinking) 'I give it to a
learned Brâhmana.' Thus (the merit) of
his (gift) becomes (as) great (as if a
learned Brâhmana had received it).
Apastamba-sutra Part 40
1. On the second and following days of
the guest's stay, the host shall not rise or
descend (from his couch) in order to
salute his (guest), if he has been saluted
before (on the first day).
2. He shall eat after his guests.
3. He shall not consume all the flavoured
liquids in the house, so as to leave nothing
for guests.
4. He shall not cause sweetmeats to be
prepared for his own sake.
5. (A guest) who can repeat the (whole)
Veda (together with the supplementary
books) is worthy to receive a cow and the
Madhuparka,
6. (And also) the teacher, an officiating
priest, a Snâtaka, and a just king (though
not learned in the Veda).

Why we recommend you to have pineapple in your diet
Fresh pineapple is the only known source of an enzyme
called bromelain, which has been used in studies to
determine it's effectiveness in alleviating joint pain,
arthritis, reduce inflammation, inhibit tumor growth and
shorten recovery time following plastic surgery.
How to incorporate more pineapples into your diet
· Add pineapple to your favorite kebabs. Try shrimp,
chicken or steak kababs with red onions, pineapple and
cherry tomatoes
· Make a fruit salad with strawberries, pineapple, mandarin
oranges and grapes. Top with unsweetened shredded
coconut for a fresh twist
· Add some pineapple slices to your salad at lunch or
dinner. Compliment the pineapple with walnuts or pecans, a
crumbled cheese and light balsamic or citrus vinaigrette
dressing· Make your own juice! Nothing tastes better than fresh
fruit juice in the morning. When you make your own, you
can be sure there are no added preservatives or sweeteners· Make a fresh salsa with pineapple, mango, jalapeno, red
peppers and chipotle pepper and use as a topper for your
favorite fish tacos.
Did you know?
Pineapples are international symbols of welcome and are a symbolic way of saying “you are perfect” when presented to someone. Gate posts and door frames often have pineapples to signal a welcome.

We live for the moments that leave
memories forever. A film maker films
those sublime feelings in each of the
project thru the lens from the heart.
Many years back director Cheran did an
“Autograph” and aesthetically rekindled
charming memories of puppy loves,
crushes and diehard romances of
audience. But if you ask him now, he has
more than one volume of Autograph
which is filled with pains than gains of a
film maker. The changing trend in
cinima industry pushes the art back and
brings the business first. The corporate
structure bifurcates the industry into two
and gives space only for the biggies and
others are sidelined. Cheran stands on
the other side and trying to innovate a
new business model which skips cinema
malls to reach the homes of audience

directly. There may be faults, biased
stands in the present business model.
But can C2H the innovation of Cheran
taste success by avoiding the traditional
method and people init? It's a big
question. More than twise the C2H
launch was postponed and finally hit the
doors of 20 lakh homes as Cheran
claims.
I too had few discussions with Mr.
Cheran about the pros and cons of C2H. I
suggested him to think and apply beyond
DVD format and local cables. With the
technology in hand, I promoted the idea
of global streaming of movies on pay per
view basis to moving taxis, trains,
busses, air planes, hotels, malls and
homes of any part of the world. My
opinion is, if I can't give theater
experience then I should supplement
with more exclusive contents which I
cant get in theatres. After his first release
“JK Enum Nanbanini Kadhai”, he may
or may not go for this suggestion, since it
involves lots of business activities like
tieups to carry the content to desired
destinations. But if he is not, soon
somebody else will do it, because the
trend is fast changing.
But not just Mr. Cheran and others are
feeling the heat. It's not just restricted to
Kollywood, Tollywood, Mollywood or
Bollywood. Including Hollywood the
entire movie industry is facing a crisis.
Invaded by mobile phones, wearable
gadgets, video games and streaming
webportals, younger audiences are
rapidly drifting away. But this doesn't
mean that cinema industry itself will
drown, we should think otherway. Like
Cheran thinks there are many heads
thinking to float, survive and win the
challenge. The strength of cinema is
Story telling, which cant be replaced by
any technology. Only the presentation
will chanage, story telling will remain
same. So there is no threat to Cinema.
How to reach is challenging. Cinema is
the only entertainment medium which
survived for more that 100 years and
growing. So the real possibility is soon
the industry will rebound with freshly
equipped with modern futuristic
advancements.
Just visualize it. In another Ten years,
virtual theatres may come, i.e instead of
going to theatres, we will create virtual
giant screens on air, which only can be
seen using a wearable glass. With the
Cinema Scope

latest interactive technology, the audience
may have the pleasure of changing the
twists and turns of a movie, in simple we
may watch customized cinema. I also
predict beyond that, literally, we can be
part of a movie and we can watch
ourselves in a cinema. I Googled a
synopsis of Brave New World (1931), a
novel by Aldous Huxley which predicts a
similar entertainment experience.
Cinema will become more like interactive
TV says Chr i s topher Nolan , the
Interstellar director. He predicts film
makers and exhibitors will respond
strongly and creatively to the change and
challenge of modern iteractive mediums.
Never before cinema is challenged like
this, actually now the industry feels only
the tip of the challenge. The new trending
developments will force innovation,
experimentation and expense. Now
people say with the invasion of digial
platforms the cost of production has come
down, but the future will be a costly affair,
which will demand more investments to
produce, promote and distribute.
In kollywood Kamal smelled the change
and tried to release Viswaroopam thru
DTH. Now Cheran trying to go further
with C2H. So buckle your seat belt
because we too as a fan part of the super
fast change.
