At the Council meetings members are presented with
financial statements and reports from the areas of Curriculum,
Student Services (Environment) and Student Leadership. In
terms of Curriculum we are still working through the
implementation of the Victorian Curriculum which will be
completed by the end of this year. There has been a large
amount of activity in the areas of Student Services with
fundraisers, camps, excursions etc taking place. Our College
Captains also reported on the Student Leadership activities
and we are joining a Program called Teach the Teacher which
allows students to give teachers feedback about the school
and things happening within and outside of the classrooms.
Financially the College is in a reasonably healthy position even
though we have spent money on modernising the
administration area. We will once again build our resources
and look at our next projects which will continue to
concentrate on improving the teaching and learning
environment for student.

Principal Report Continued
At the end of the meeting members were taken on
a tour of the new Administration facility and then
treated to news feeds from the College’s new
Twitter account. On this account, we have
assembled an array of pictures from a broad range
of activities that students have taken part in since
the start of this year. It is really worth a look.
Photos and video from the camp can be found at
the schools twitter account: @Rosehill_SC
or on the web: https://twitter.com/Rosehill_SC
Facilities
We will begin moving into the new Administration
building shortly and a full handover will occur during
the Term holidays. It is an exciting time.
Many schools of our vintage, were originally heated
by oil and there are still underground tanks all over
schools in Victoria. The Government has put a plan
in place to remove these tanks as many still have oil
and sand in them and could possibly contaminate
the soil around them. Last Friday work began to
remove the underground tank from the oil heating
days just outside the old boiler room near the
central assembly area. Fortunately, there has been
no contamination on our site so it is a simple matter
of digging and removing the tank. The benefit for
us is that we may get some new asphalting out of
the project.
The next project, which will take place during Term
3, is the replacement of our oldest relocatable
classrooms with new ones. Students will notice that
there will be four classrooms removed and replaced
with modern state of the art facilities. The benefits
will far outweigh the disruptions caused.
We have been working very closely with Moonee
Valley to improve the traffic management
processes around the school. Just last week we
received news that indented parking will be
installed along Sapphire Street where the current
drop off zone is and the court bowl at the end will
be widened to allow cars to turn without the need
for a three point turn. Both the neighbours and the
College are very pleased with this outcome.
A good school never stands still in terms of facilities
and we are always looking at ways to improve the
environment for the community.

CSEF Funding
Applications for CSEF funding close shortly. If you
have a Healthcare Card or similar, your child should
be eligible to receive the funding. This funding
provides $225 for eligible students which goes
towards the cost of Camps, Sport, Excursions and
Incursions. The funding must be applied for each
year, and the balance of any leftover funding at the
end of each year carries forward to the following
year. Applications are available from the College
Administration Office.
The funding also entitles Year 7 students to a one-off
uniform package (either summer OR winter uniform
- not both). If you have not previously applied for
this, it can still be organised.
A reminder that if you had the funding last year, but
have not re-applied for this year, you must do so
before the closing date.

Japanese students (8 female and 4 male) from our
sister school, Kogakkan High School. The students
will be in Melbourne for 10 nights from
Wednesday 26th July to Saturday 5th August 2017.
The exchange program between Kogakkan High
School and Rosehill Secondary College has been
running for more than 15 years and has been very
rewarding for students and families alike. This is a
great opportunity to make friends in Japan by
participating in class activities and excursions.
If you are interested in hosting a student, would like
additional information on the homestay program
please do not hesitate to contact the College.

Junior School News
The Semester 1 Junior School Assembly was held on
Wednesday morning 24th May. The purpose of the
assembly was to recognise student achievements,
re-cap school events and to showcase student
performances.
Many certificates were awarded to select students
for various reasons:
- RIL awards- demonstration of the school’s values
of Respect, Initiative and Learning, as nominated
by teachers.
- Academic awards- Exemplary academic results
and work habits, based on interim reports.
- 100% Attendance Awards.
Congratulations to the recipients of these awards.
We also had two outstanding performances. Emily
Baker sang ‘Breathe Me’ while Ellyn Ryan performed
a solo dance to accompany her. Lachlan Madeira
wowed the audience with his incredible solo violin
talents. A big congratulations to these students for
their performances in front of the 600+ audience.
The Year 9 Boys Leadership group shared their
planned endeavours to raise funds for the White
Ribbon Foundation. They will be raising awareness
and fundraising through their own initiative of a
physical challenge. Their plan is to complete as
many stair-runs as possible over the course of an
entire day, with donated money being collected for
each step that they climb.
Edi Muir shared her experiences of the Year 7
Transition Camp and Tea Walsh & Chloe Haweil
highlighted the adventures of our Year 8 students
that attended camp. Both were wonderful recounts
of their respective camps.
We celebrated the achievements of our Year 9
cohort after the success of Rosefest earlier this year.
Along with Ms Wheare and their homeroom
teachers, the students coordinated a wonderful
event which raised a total $5,787. This will be
forwarded onto many deserving organisations and
charities as voted upon by the students.
Students were also briefed about the recent NASA
camp that was attended by some of our Senior
Students. This opportunity will present itself again in
2019 and students are encouraged to speak to their
Science teacher if they have an interest in this
exciting opportunity.
A big thanks to all of the staff and students for their
attendance and a big congratulations to those that
performed or received awards.
The next assembly will be early in Term 3, where we
will welcome our Japanese sister school to our
college community.

PEER SUPPORT 2017
The Peer support program has been running during
Term 1 and the start of Term 2. The Year 11 Peer
Support leaders worked closely with Year 7 students
offering support and guidance. The program has
officially finished for this year, however we believe
the strong bonds that have formed will continue.
Thank you to all the students involved.
The Peer Support program aimed to:
Assist students to gain positive connections at
school through respectful relationships.
Empower young people to support each other
and contribute positively to their community.
Utilize a whole school approach (RIL) to support
positive cultural change.
Provide students with a supportive learning
environment in which to develop the skills,
understandings, attitudes and strategies to
improve their mental, social and emotional
wellbeing.
The Peer Support program focuses on developing
communication skills, self-confidence and self-
esteem. Develops key skills in resilience,
assertiveness, decision making, problem solving and
leadership.
Provides authentic leadership opportunities for Peer
Leaders
Peer support improves communication between all
sectors of the school community - students, their
peers, younger students, older students, teachers
and parents/caregivers.
VCAL SELF-DEFENCE COURSE 2017
Year 11 VCAL students are participating in a 10
week martial arts program. The program, run by
James Sghando from The Winged Dragon Martial
and Healing Arts, aims to teach students real-life
strategies to deal with possible high risk, threatening
situations.
In our first lesson, James talked to the students about
some of his life experiences. His focus was on how
to avoid dangerous occurrences with a sensible
mindset, always respecting oneself and others.
Our most recent lesson focused on the four
principles of self-defence: Awareness, Confidence,
Assertiveness and Skills. Each of these principles
plays an integral part in how we approach different
situations.
First, an awareness of one’s physical environment
as well as one’s self is critical to avoid situations
before they start.
Second, each situation must be approached
with confidence, demonstrating self-belief in
success.
Third, one must show assertiveness. This is done
from an awareness of body language and other
non-verbal cues. It is important however, not to
confuse assertiveness with aggressiveness.
The final principle
is skills. The focus
here is physical
hands-on
techniques,
which our class
will become
aware of in the
coming weeks.

All students receive a Certificate and an individual
Student Report indicating which questions they
answered correctly, as well as the average mark for
their state. The Student Report is also useful for
highlighting student strengths and weaknesses in
