CommitteeBoatTrainingOurCommitteeBoat(CB)isoneoftheclub'skeyassets.Itisusedtosetandretrieveourmooringmushroomsatthebeginningandendofthesailingseason,itferriesguestsfromtheshoretosailboatsandbackduringourOpenHouses,itisusedtosetthecourseforourregattas,itisusedasa"chaseboat"oncruises,andmostimportantly,itassistsinrescueandrecoveryeffortswhenoursailorsandboatsneedhelp.UseoftheCBrequiresthattheskipperbekeyedspecificallyontheCBandthattheCBissignedoutinthelogbooklikeanyotherboat.TheCBisnottobeusedforpleasurecruising.
WewouldliketohavemoreclubmembersbecomequalifiedtooperatetheCB.Gettingkeyedconsistsoflearningafewstraightforwardsteps,andsomepracticeatthehelm.IfyouhavealreadyearnedyourkeyonasailboatandareinterestedingettingkeyedontheCBpleasesendanemailtoCmdrNCSC@gmail.com.Iwillmakealistofinterestedmembersandarrangefortraining.

GettingofftheMooring
EarlythissailingseasonIsawoneoftheFlyingScotsatfullsail,butstillattachedtothemooring.Thecrewhadgreatdifficultygettingdisconnectedfromthemooringbecauseofthetensiononthepainter.IfthewindandcurrentareopposedandyouaresailingaFlyingScot,pleaseremembertohoistonlythejibtosailofffromthemooring.Onceyouareclearofthemooringsyoucanputtheboatinironsandhoistthemainsail.
Thistleslackatoppingliftontheboom,whichmakesitmuchmoredifficulttosailwithjustthejibbecausetheboomandmainsailwillbeinthewayinthecockpit.Insteadofsailingoffthemooringusingjustthejib,pullupthecenterboardbeforehoistingthemainsail.ThiswillallowtheThistletoalignwiththewindinsteadofthecurrentasthemainsailishoisted.Oncethemainsailisupreleasetheboatfromthemooring,putthecenterboarddown,andsailoff.
OverhandKnots
Theoverhandknotisthesimplestknot.Itisalsothemostdifficulttountie.Pleasedonotuseoverhandknotsonanyofthelinesonourboats.

SuccessfulBatteryParkBeachCleanup
TheAnnualBatteryParkbeachcleanupheldthisyearonEarthDay,April22,wasonceagainahugesuccess.Unlikelastyear’srain,theweatherheldoutforthe80+volunteersincludingoveradozenmembersoftheNewCastleSailingClub,16UDstudentsrepresentingAlphaPhiOmega,10studentsfromAwakenedHeartSpiritualCenter,12studentsfromDelawareFutures,andmembersoftheNewCastleLionsClub.
ItwasgreathavingfamiliesshowuponEarthDaytogivebacktothecommunity.Everyonepitchedinandcollecteddebrisandtrashalongtheriver’sedgeworkingbothnorthandsouthfromthepark.OfcoursewecouldnothavedoneitwithoutthecontinuedsupportoftheNewCastlePublicWorksDepartment,wholoanedtheregistrationtablesandcollectedallthetrashbagsthevolunteersfilled.ItwasagreatwaytocelebrateEarthDayandgettheparklookinggoodforthepublictoenjoy.

Thereisalotofworkthatgoeson'behindthescenes'keepingtheFleetoperational,andI'dliketogiveashoutouttosomeofthe"unsungheroes"fromthelastfewweeks.
Wereyouawarethatwithinafewweeksoftheboatlaunch,duringextremelyhighwinds,threeofourboatsdecidedthey'dliketomigratefromtheirmoorings?First3110decidedtotravelsouthandalmostendeduppiercedonthesubmergedpilingslocatedalongtheshorenearthewalkingpath.KathyLeefshouldbecommendedforhersharpeyesinbringingthistotheFleetCaptain'sattention.ThenextdayaScotandaThistlemovedtheirmooringsandtraveledtothenorth,blockingtheGoodwillFireCompany'srampaccess.Thisrequiredimmediateactiontorelocatethemoorings,ateameffortinvolvingKathyLeef,TiloStahl,DaveKoppeser,LauraFontana,BarbCooper,JimLooloian,ScottAndrews,andSteveConstablewithguidanceprovidedremotelybyCharlieNakamura.Itlooksliketheboatmooringshavefinallysettleddownandarenolongermigrating.
WealsopulledThistle3110atthistimeandplantodothelastbitofsprucingupbeforeofferingherupforsale.ManythankstoDaveK.andTiloforleadingthechargewiththis.ThecenterboardonGoldRushcrackedandrequiredachangingout,whichshouldalreadyhaveoccurredbypublication.ThankstoherCaptainChuckShorten,TiloStahlandDonPippinsforassistancewiththis.Thereareafewotherinstanceswherehalyardintegrityhasbeenquestionedandauthenticated(thankstoChrisAnnand)andotherfixesmadetotheFleet,somyapologiesfornotlistingthemall,butIhopeyougetthepicture.
