As this productive year ends, I offer you my deepest thanks. Your commitment to this impassioned community has given the ASE Foundation the means to support the field of echo in 2015 and beyond. From those that donated time via volunteerism to those that donated funding for the Foundation’s initiatives, the supporters of the Foundation are active and have ensured that echo is continually advancing.

With that being said, I would like to offer the readers of this newsletter a challenge: together, let us make 2015 our most successful year yet. From providing scholarships and grants, to providing quality cardiac care to underserved populations, there is still work to be done within our field.

However, the Foundation and its supporters made great progress this year. We participated in two humanitarian events, spearheaded a summit to discuss the value of echo, disseminated crucial guidelines to echo labs, provided young professionals with the means to attend the Scientific Sessions, awarded a $200,000 multi-year research grant to a team of scientists hoping to utilize echo in fusion with other imaging modalities, and raised nearly $75,000 for future research funding through the 5th Annual Research Awards Gala. Thank you!

In 2014, your commitment to echo provided our field with $223,794.76 – 90% of our $250,000 fundraising goal. Much of this funding was earmarked to unrestricted funding and this will be used to augment the funds in areas that were directly earmarked below.

• You provided $6,895 for support of multi-language document and poster translations of guideline documents, such as the new Recommendations for Cardiac Chamber Quantification by Echocardiography in Adults.

• Providing care to those who need it most is important to you. You gifted $10,213 that will support humanitarian efforts in 2015.

• As federal healthcare research funding dwindles, ASE members rose to the challenge of providing researchers with the funding they require. You donated $78,056 – all of which will be allocated to providing echo researchers with critical support and resources.

• $2,741 of your donations were allocated to provide international sonographers with training.

• You have given fellows and sonographers precious resources to attend the Scientific Sessions. Your donations of $11,191.76 will support over 50 echo professionals with travel grants and scholarships to attend ASE’s largest conference of the year, the 26th Annual Scientific Sessions in Boston.

Extra, extra! Read all about it!

GUIDELINE UPDATESAn update of one of ASE’s most cited and utilized guideline documents has been published in the January issue of JASE. Recommendations for Cardiac Chamber Quantification by Echocardiography in Adults, led by Dr. Roberto M. Lang, is an update of the popular 2005 document. The ASE Foundation is currently partnering with physician volunteers for guideline translations in Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, and other languages, which gives clinicians across the globe access to these recommendations for improved patient care worldwide.

Not only does the availability of guidelines improve patient care, but it also ensures that standardization and consistency is a top priority in echo labs around the world. In 2014, you ensured that the Foundation will have funding in 2015 to translate and disseminate these critical documents to cardiac ultrasound professionals. Thank you for making patient care and standardization of practice a top priority of the ASE Foundation. n

1. What encouraged you to become a monthly sustainer to the ASE Foundation? How can the ASE Foundation grow its number of sustainers? Being a monthly sustainer is an easy and efficient way for me to support the work of the ASE Foundation. It definitely lowers the impact on my personal budget while providing the ASE Foundation with a reliable source of support.

2. I see that in addition to cardiac sonographer credentials, you also have an RN. Tell me about your journey into cardiac ultrasound. I started my nursing career in 1984 and discovered a lifelong interest in cardiology while working in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. In 1989, merging of hospital facilities created an opportunity for me to move to the Echocardiography Laboratory as an RN sonographer. I became credentialed within two years and began to participate in echo education and research. In 2000, I became the Quality Improvement and Education Coordinator in the Mayo Clinic Rochester Echo Lab and have continued in that role.

3. How long have you been involved with ASE and/or the ASE Foundation? I became a member of ASE in 1995. Since then, I have been privileged to participate in many ways. The ASE Foundation was developed while I was a member of the ASE Board of Directors. Because I believed strongly in the mission of the Foundation, I began to donate then and never stopped.

4. How would you like to see the Foundation grow its initiatives in the future? Are there specific areas within the field that you think need additional support that the Foundation could offer? As an educator, I am particularly interested in seeing more support for education of sonographers, both nationally and internationally.

5. What motivated you to join ASE and become involved with the Society? Early in my career, my mentor suggested joining ASE to provide an avenue for education and professional development. I’ve participated on committees, the Board of Directors, and as a speaker at the Scientific Session, and I’ve never been disappointed. ASE has played a huge part in my career.

6. What is your ideal vacation and why? Warm. Why? I live in Minnesota. n

You Made a Difference in 2014! continued

• An incredible total of 2,648 people contributed to the 2014 Annual Appeal to advance echo. The average gift amount was $59.

• Since ASE provides funding for the Foundation’s operational costs, ASEF has been able and will continue to ensure that 100% of your earmarked donations go toward the initiative that you have chosen to support. Every dollar raised through the Foundation’s Annual Appeal goes directly back out into the field.

Donors, volunteers, and all of those in-between: you are the reason that the Foundation is able to make a difference for echo. I believe that together we can make 2015 even more successful! Additionally, because of your assistance, we came closer than ever

before to meeting our $250,000 goal. n

4ASE Foundation Newsletter - Winter 2014

1. What encouraged you to become a monthly sustainer to the ASE Foundation? How can the ASE Foundation grow its number of sustainers?

I became a monthly sustainer after attending Echo Florida 2014. Although I had been a member of the ASE since 2010, I really didn’t know too much about the ASEF. At the conference, I spoke with a few ASE staff members who told me about volunteer opportunities and how to become more involved. When I got home from the conference, I read a lot about the great work that the Foundation did with members’ contributions. It was then I decided that I wanted to become more of an active member, in particular, a monthly sustainer.

I think the ASEF could raise its numbers of sustainers simply by showing its members that amounts given can be as little as $10 per month and those members can give as much, or as little as they want, depending on their financial situation. As an example, when I was considering donating on a monthly basis, I thought the Foundation had a minimum or a “suggested” dollar amount that a member should donate. I was pleased to hear that any amount donated is appreciated. No one wants to feel pressured into giving a “suggested” amount, and the flexibility of contributions was a great selling point to me.

2. Tell me about your journey into cardiac ultrasound.

My journey into cardiac ultrasound started in 2008 when I was laid off from a financial services job that I had been in for the previous 12 years. This lay off was a blessing in disguise, as I was feeling a bit burnt out in the investment field from working long hours, including some weekends. I always had an interest in working in the medical field, but wasn’t sure what I really wanted to do there. I wanted a career that would not only challenge me intellectually, but also one that would enhance my attention to detail skills. As I was working in a contract position shortly after being laid off, a colleague who I just met mentioned that his wife was a cardiac sonographer and told me how she really loved it. I job shadowed her and instantly knew that cardiac sonography was the career I wanted to pursue.

3. How long have you been involved with ASE and/or the ASE Foundation?

I have been a member of the ASE since I was a student at Bunker Hill Community College in 2010. I recently became a monthly sustainer in the fall of 2014.

A Sustainer’s Perspective with Steve Amato, RDCS“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”

- Muhammad Ali

4. What motivated you to join ASE and become involved with the Society?

I was motivated to join the ASE by my sonography teacher at Bunker Hill Community College. As a student, I didn’t know anything about the society, but my teacher encouraged us to join the ASE as students. She said it is a great resource for everything relating to echocardiography, that it would be a central (cyber) place to go to for learning and advancing our careers. This is an understatement. The Society has become invaluable to me as a “newer” sonographer here at Massachusetts General Hospital. Since I started at MGH, seeing how many sonographers and cardiologists are members of the ASE has proven to me the Society is not only a smart yearly investment, but one that I believe a sonographer shouldn’t do without. I am constantly on the website, reading the blogs and learning new things from my colleagues in sonography around the world.

5. What is your ideal vacation and why?

My ideal vacation would be to travel around Europe for a month by train. I love history, especially military history, so seeing places like Germany, Italy, and France would be great. I would not only like to see the major cities in these countries, but also the “out of the way” places where well known battles took place.

A partnership with the

real-time imaging. We design and develop innovative consoles, transducers, and software that are used to help medical professionals deliver proactive solutions to diagnose and treat patients and deliver the best patient care possible.

By giving back:Hitachi Aloka focuses on the personal aspect of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease. One way we have become in-volved is by providing ultrasound systems and support for the ASE Foundation at the Care Harbor LA Clinic event this past year. We teamed up with the ASE Foundation to support them in their first domestic humanitarian mission and it was a great success.

A caring team of physicians and technologists using Hitachi Aloka ultrasound systems provided echocardiograms to 56 patients that otherwise may not have had this care. This is an example of how Hitachi Aloka is proving that providing advanced and high performance imaging quality and analysis tools for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease is our personal mission.

By looking forward:Increasing patient volumes is a reality in the Value Based healthcare environment today. Weunderstand that you are personally dedicatedto providing the best diagnosis for your patients. At Hitachi Aloka, we are committed to delivering the latest innovations in cardiovascular diagnostics so that you can give each patient your personal attention and care.

Since time with your patients is valuable, it is important to have tools that give you the most information in the least amount of time. Novel innovations that may provide information without additional procedures for TDS patients, eliminating beat-to-beat variation issues by using a single heart cycle to collect data, and new ways to evaluate hemodynamics are our ways of helping you move forward.

“It was incredibly helpful to have Hitachi Aloka provide the use of their echocardiography systems and support for the Los Angeles Care Harbor volunteer event. Our cardiology specialists were more able to effectively triage patients who often have difficulty accessing standard patient care systems. By having this resource we could either provide reassurance to our patients or more appropriately expedite continued cardiology care.”
