Ace the Kangaroo hopped in for a visit

Over the past few weeks, students in Primary History lessons have learnt about our native animal the Kangaroo. Brooke, a registered WIRES carer, was kind enough to bring one of her joeys (Ace) to school to visit the students. Ace enjoyed his visit, hopping around our classroom and getting lots of pats and cuddles. Students in Kinder to Year 6 learnt about the life cycle of a kangaroo, and what to do if you find a joey. Thank you Ace and Brooke for visiting us. Some comments overheard include:

"I want a pet kangaroo now." "He is so cute." "He is adorable." "My dad shoots them." "He is so soft." "Eww he did a poo on the floor." "My Nan had one of them when she was a kid." "Our kangaroo died."

PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Thanks to all students, staff and parents who tuned into “Moose on the Loose” last week in the inaugural MADDER program which will be running weekly on the BCS Facebook page. The videos will be released at 6pm Tuesdays, with this week’s instalment of “Olga the Brolga” by Mr Riedy being an absolute pearler! Other staff members have joined the presenter ranks with Mr Longford and Mr White already committing to the program. My saying for the week talks about perception, gratitude and joy. The old adage about is the glass half-full or half empty. I think if we all check our perception and become more grateful in outlook, then this will spread and be infectious.

Good luck to Mitchell Carmichael who is competing in the South West AFL trials in Narrandera on the 12th April. Thanks to our Year 12 students who have started their fundraising efforts with a BBQ on our “plain clothes day” last Friday and then backed it up with a fantastic effort on State Election day with a BBQ and drinks stall at the school. The egg and bacon burger on Saturday morning prior to voting was cheap, tasty and certainly assisted me in making some good decisions. Thanks to all parents and staff who assisted Year 12 in these activities.

On Friday 22nd March, we combined Harmony Day, which focuses on accepting diversity, and National Day against Bullying, whose theme this year is “Bullying. No Way! Take action every day.” The whole school undertook a reflection period on Bullying and strategies to combat and erase bullying from our school. My thanks to Mr White for initiating this strategy, to the staff for implementing it professionally and to the students for being engaged with the material.

Easter Hat Parade

This year the Easter Hat Parade will be held on Friday, 12th of April. Year 5 and 6 students are organising a raffle and will be selling tickets to raise money for their end of year excursion. Tickets in the raffle will be 50c each. To assist with prizes for the raffle we would love donations of Easter Eggs to make up baskets as prizes.

Students are encouraged to make their hat at home and bring it to school on the day of the parade. Everyone who wears a hat on the day will get a ticket in their class raffle and one winner will be chosen randomly from each class to receive a prize. There will also be a P&C prize for each class for the best hat.

The parade will start at around 10:45am at the school. All parents/carers are invited to attend, and are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and share it with their students in the horseshoe area after the parade is over. We look forward to seeing many parents here on the day and all the amazing hat creations.

INVITATION

to attend BCS P&C Meeting

To: All our Parents/Carers at BCS When: 26th March @ 6pm Where: School Staff Room

Why: We discuss matters from small (what sort of Easter Eggs to buy for prizes at parade) to big (do we donate $10,000 to the school for VIP project). Each item we discuss helps and aids our school and students to be the best it can be. Without parents showing their support to the P&C, it cannot continue to provide help to the school and your children. Please bring a friend, and come and have a chat (and often a laugh or two). Dads are very welcome too!

COMMUNITY VISITS KINDER - have commenced their visits to the Residential Aged Care unit at the Balranald MPS. So far the children have been involved in activities including paper chipping, play dough and making fairy bread. Next visit we will be icing and decorating biscuits to look like Easter eggs. We will also begin to turn our paper chipping into sea creatures to create a sea scene as a display on a feature wall. YEAR 1/2 - have enjoyed walking down to visit our friends at Bidgee Haven. This term we have enjoyed sharing our readers, playing bingo, paper chipping and play dough. On our next visit, we will make fairy bread and before Easter, we will create Easter egg biscuits using icing mix and lollies. YEAR 3/4- commenced work at the Balranald Discovery Centre. They have taken charge of the beautiful rose walk near the old gaol. Students enjoyed weeding the rose garden, pruning the dead flowers and watering the rose bushes. Thanks to Vivienne and Baxy for their assistance. YEAR 5/6- continued the work at the Discovery Centre by weeding flowerbeds, pruning trees and shrubs, watering plants and removing dead plants. The students enjoyed learning about the garden beds and the correct way to use the rake and secateurs. Our plans involve creating fresh garden beds with hardy drought resistant plants. Thanks to Vivienne and Baxy for their assistance.
