CRAI-CMC was awarded the fire protection systemrevamp at the refinery tank farm (RTF). A total of150 tanks, spheres and vessels (used for storingvarious raw, intermediate and final productsincluding crude, methanol and propylene), will havetheir sprinkler systems upgraded. The existing fire protection sprinkler system is anolder design and has no flanged sections. Thismeans, in the event of repairs, a full ring main needsto be replaced rather than just the damaged section. The new system will incorporate flanges to makemaintenance activities more efficient and costeffective. This system protects the plant equipment against fireby spraying out a wall of extinguishing fluid (such aswater) to help arrest any fires and stop them fromspreading.

CR Asia India (CRAI) provides daily maintenanceservices to 17 process areas as part of itscomprehensive maintenance contract (CMC) at theworld’s largest refinery in Western India. Other thanregular maintenance, shutdown and turnaroundservices, CRAI-CMC is responsible for the tankmaintenance and inspection (M&I) at the Main TankFarm (MTF). The MTF consists of 101 tanks ofvarious sizes to store crude and other finalproducts. The largest tank, a crude storage tank, has a diameter of 92 metres (the length of anAmerican football field) and is 22 metres high.

CRAI-CMC executed phase 1 of the project recentlyby installing the new fire protection system in eighttanks and two spheres. As a result of smart planningand good preparedness, the work was safelyexecuted within schedule.

CRAI performed the recent maintenance on thiscrude tank including replacement of the bottom plate, riser, pontoon and sprinkler sections, installation ofdrip rings plus repairs to the upper and lower deckareas with most of the work involving confined spaceentry. Although the schedule was tight, CRAI-CMCcompleted the job without incident and ahead ofschedule saving resources while minimisingdowntime. Congratulations CRAI-CMC on this outstandingachievement!

CR Asia India (CRAI) has successfully executed catalyst replacementjobs on tubular reactors at two client sites in Western India. In both cases, the clients were particularly pleased with the way the jobswere planned and managed ensuring the desired schedules wereachieved. Both clients commended CRAI on their excellent HSE (health, safety and environmental) procedures and performance throughout. Internally developed methodologies and specialist equipment were usedto perform the first project including large customised de-dusting hoppersand funnels to enable large volumes of spent catalyst to be collectedduring unloading. The second tubular reactor, which was having its catalyst replacedearlier than expected due to high pressure drop across the catalyst filledtubes, required CRAI to mobilise specialist technicians and equipmentwithin 24 hours to perform the job. First rate coordination with the clientand our service partner, ensured a successful project all round andmeant the unit was back in operation as promptly as possible.

CRAT SERVICES

OLEFLEX PLANT

By Nimit Supin

CR Asia Thailand (CRAT) had the pleasure of performing thecatalyst services as part of a major turnaround for one ofThailand’s leading producers of petroleum products. Thismajor project was the highlight of our year. In addition tothe mechanical and cleaning work, it also comprised ofcatalyst change-outs on several different types of reactorsincluding a continuous catalytic regeneration (CCR) unit, anaphtha hydrotreating unit (NHTU), two sulfur recovery units(SRU), an amine vessel and the unloading of a residue fluidcatalytic cracking unit (RFCCU). A highlight of the project was performing the catalystunloading on the heavy vacuum gas oil (HVGO) unit and thetwo diesel hydrotreating units (DHTU) by wet dumping. Wetdumping is a safer and more efficient method of unloadingcatalyst because the unloading can be carried out undernormal atmospheric conditions as the water helps to speedup the reactor cooldown and passivate the spent catalyst. With our experience and knowledge gained from previous wetdumping jobs, we improved our techniques for separatingthe water from the unloaded catalyst and for cooling therecycled water. All work was completed safely and ahead of time so that theplant could be successfully returned to operation onschedule.

DENSE LOADING

CR ASIA THAILAND

By Nimit Supin

DENSE LOADING EVENLY DISTRIBUTES CATALYST TO ACHIEVE A LEVEL PROFILE, WHILE

ENSURING AN OPTIMUM WEIGHT IS LOADED WITH A UNIFORM DENSITY. IT ENHANCES THE LIFE

CYCLE OF THE CATALYST FOR HIGHER PRODUCTIVITY AND LONGER REACTOR RUN LENGTHS.

A refinery in Thailand needed to urgently replace thecatalyst in three hydrocracking units due to pressuredrop issues. The scope included unloading of thespent catalyst and reloading of the fresh catalyst. Thefresh catalyst was to be dense loaded to meet theperformance expectations of the reactor. We responded rapidly to our client’s call for help andwere tasked with executing the catalyst change-outs

within a tight schedule. By working collaboratively withall stakeholders and utilising the catalyst supplierslicensed dense loading equipment, we were able todeliver all three reactors back to our client significantlyahead of plan. This was an exceptional performance by the team. Wedelivered on quality, safety and efficiency and savedvaluable time when it was needed the most.

HYDROCRACKING UNITS

By Saeng Kaewkomol & Sedthachai Jantrapan

CR Asia Thailand (CRAT) performed a catalyst change-out and mechanical repairs on the hydrocracking unit atThailand’s largest oil refinery in August 2019. Catalyst reloading was executed using Calydens denseloading technology. Our team demonstrated their

extensive experience and professionalism to performthe repairs and reloading services. Utilising our ownexperienced and licensed dense loading personnelto operate the Calydens loader (under the supervisionof Crealyst), we were able to reload the vessel wellwithin the target density set by the client and in recordtime too. The vessel was subsequently handed overdays ahead of the plan, allowing the client to startupthe plant much earlier than expected. CR ASIA’S RESCUE TEAM HELPS OUT

During the turnaround activities on the hydrocrackingunit, our personnel discovered another contractor’semployee in need of medical attention. He had climbedto the top of the reactor to carry out repair works inside. However, while climbing, he suffered cramping due tofatigue. Our personnel alerted the CR Asia rescueteam, and they assembled at the scene for a rescueoperation. The victim was safely recovered from theladder uninjured and sent to the medic for furtherassessment and advance treatment. Good job by the team!

CR Asia Thailand (CRAT) was called upon to perform acatalyst change-out on the isomer unit at Thailand’slargest oil refinery. As the isomer reactor is a radial flow (or horizontalflow) design for minimising pressure drop and the clientwanted to load different layers of catalyst in thereactor, these had to be loaded as concentric ringsaround the centre-pipe rather than vertical layers in anaxial flow (or vertical flow) reactor.

CRAT customised a concentric loader, as they havedone previously, to perform the job. This loading deviceand procedure was approved by the catalyst supplierand we were able to finish the job in record time. Congratulations to the team! The job was executedsafely and to the customer’s satisfaction.

CONTINUOUS CATALYTIC REGENERATION UNIT

By Saeng Kaewkomol & Sedthachai Jantrapan

CR Asia Thailand (CRAT) performed mechanicalmodifications and a complete catalyst change-out onthe continuous catalytic regeneration (CCR) unit atThailand’s largest oil refinery in August 2019. The scope involved replacing all the scallopsthroughout the entire vessel, which required our teamto lift the top reduction zone and perform a full strip outof all the reactor internals. With guidance andsupervision from the vendor, we adapted a newprocedure for the installation of the redesigned scallops(which are no longer fabricated with a bottom cap).Although this was our first time installing theredesigned scallops, we successfully executed the tasksafely, within schedule and to the client’s satisfaction. The experience and knowledge gained from executingsimilar jobs over the many years of operation helpedmake specific improvements to be able to remove andreinstall internal parts and achieve a target loadingefficiency desired by the client. A large part of thesuccess was due to the excellent cooperation betweenthe client, catalyst vendor and CRAT’s managementand staff. We also appreciate the excellent preparation

work done by the client as this also contributed to thesuccess of the project, as everything was wellorganised and prepared. All remaining vessel internals were systematicallyrebuilt, and the catalyst was reloaded. The vessel hasnow been operating for six months with a higherperformance, which is appreciated by our client. The client presented CRAT with a certificaterecognising our outstanding performance during theirmajor turnaround for 2019.

CR Asia Thailand (CRAT) executeda plant shutdown for Thailand’slargest petrochemical and refiningcompany in October. The mainvessels included a hydrocrackingunit and a continuous catalyticregeneration unit (CCR). CCR UNIT

The scope of work on the CCR unitincluded the lifting of the topreduction zone and a full strip ofthe internals to facilitate theinstallation of a new centre pipesupport. In order to lift thereduction zone, catalyst transferpipes had to be carefully marked, cut and removed. Due to the age ofthe vessel, fitting new parts to theexisting internals was challenging. However, with the combinedresources of all stakeholders, wesuccessfully completed the jobwithin the proposed timeframe.

CR Asia has become well known forhaving an excellent safety record, and once again completed anothershutdown with zero incidents andwas able to turn over completedvessels to a happy client. We valuethe longstanding relationship wehave with this client and lookforward to future successestogether.

HYDROCRACKING UNIT

Over the past 20 years, we havesuccessfully executed the catalystand mechanical change-outservices on the hydrocracking unitmultiple times. During thisshutdown, however, we had toreplace the extraordinarily largeoutlet collection basket located at

the bottom of a 38 meter, 6-bedreactor. We also replaced theinternal quench line gasket andmaterial due to metallurgy issuespreviously encountered. Thischallenging job required aconsiderable amount of mechanicalengineering, modifications andexpertise working closely with theteam to ensure the job wascompleted safely and efficiently.

CR Asia Thailand (CRAT) participated in a supplier conferenceorganised by Thailand's largest petrochemical and refining company. Excited about their customer-centric transformation for the future, welearned about our client's new product development, customer values, pricing strategy, distribution channels and human resourcesdevelopment. Topics covered business direction, procurementdirection, corporate governance and customers. The event was well attended a great opportunity to show our supportand commitment to this important client.

The successful and safe execution of the job withinschedule was greatly appreciated by the client whosubsequently committed to awarding CRAT andCRAM a second train of the MRU in 2020.

CR Thailand (CRAT) and CR Asia Malaysia (CRAM)joined forces to perform a mercury removal unit(MRU) adsorbent change-out for an offshore asset inthe Joint Development Area between Malaysia andThailand. With strong offshore capabilities and aproven track record of successful projectdelivery, the team was excited to work on the Mudaplatform. The scope included decanting of the fresh adsorbentto larger containers in Songkhla, Thailand, followedby spent adsorbent unloading and shipment of thespent material back to Malaysia. A team fromCRAM then transferred the spent adsorbent from thelarge containers into 200 litre UN approved drums. Once unloaded, a full inspection of the integrity ofthe reactor was conducted, and fresh adsorbent wasreloaded.

SOFT-FLOW LOADING

MRU CHANGE-OUT

Safety concerns prevented us from setting up our Soft-Flow equipment over the live process area, thereforewe had to find an alternate solution. Our teamcollaborated to establish a different approach and byaltering the configuration, we were able to set up theequipment safely. The team completed the task with no signs of attritionto the adsorbent, further impressing our client andensuring customer satisfaction in all aspects of theservices performed. The job was executed in a safeand professional manner, under challenging conditions.Once again CRAT was able to achieve the goals of theproject with zero incidents and well within the requiredschedule.

CR Asia Thailand (CRAT) was awarded a servicecontract for the mercury removal unit (MRU)adsorbent replacement services for a leadinginternational oil company’s major offshore assets inthe Gulf of Thailand. CRAT responded to an urgent request forour services at the North Pailin platform, immediatelyafter completing a similar job on theErawan platform. Our team quickly and successfullyrerouted resources and equipment to perform thenew task. Our Soft-Flow or pneumatic loading technologywas used to reload the fresh adsorbent. Thisloading technique eliminates the use of a craneduring the loading process and is substantially moreefficient than conventional loading.
