ere we are at the end of another year.It was a pleasure to spend it with you, trying totell you about the endless developments of“made in Italy” woodworking technology and

its increasing success, sharing continuous challengesand new opportunities, meeting several people, learn-ing a lot... And we wrote pages and pages about this.

The last issue of 2014 is in your hands (or on your PCscreen, smartphone or tablet). As it often happens, thisis an issue that is somehow linked to the first issue of thenew year, 2015 just starting. As usual, December is themonth when you draw a balance. And recent monthshave been packed with events, meeting, assemblies, opportunities to make evaluations. This year was also full of months with plenty of meetingsin company, open-house events, “open doors”, presen-tations, press conferences... We cannot report every-thing on these pages, but we can tell you that so manyindustry people came from all over the world to visit ourcompanies and to take a look at our technology. Great, really great...

Italian technology is largely appreciated all around theworld. Italian companies, unsatisfied with a complicateddomestic market, have worked hard to achieve increas-ing success across the national borders. And they suc-ceeded.

We reported their stories in the past issues and we aretelling new ones in this and in the upcoming Xylon Inter-national edition, which − we are sure − will take you bysurprise. We have to change, take new directions, do allwe can to expand our scope, so that our vocation − i.e.tell the world about “made in Italy”– takes all of us far.

The next date is with the January-February issue of XylonInternational, with new stories, more figures and... well, you will find out soon.

Until then, happy new year: may 2015 be the year weare all wishing. ■

Pagnoni Impianti announces the start-up of the double embossed in-reg-ister system at Sit factory in Mortara,Saviola Group. Thanks to its long-time experience inthe field of short-cycle presses, PagnoniImpianti has set up the system allow-ing the simultaneous melamine im-pregnated lamination with embossedin-register on both the top and bottomsurfaces: the result is a definite syn-chronous effect for the furniture industry. The decision taken by the leadingItalian group in lamination sector to as-sign to Pagnoni its introduction in thishigh technological market segmentrecognizes the manufacturer strong ap-

titude towards the search of innovativesolutions. Needless to say that the one-sided em-bossed in-register for laminate flooringcan be achieved as well. Pagnoni Impianti has recently delivereda new press of this sort to Alpea inMortegliano, having a pressure ca-pacity on product up to 70 kg/cm². Also the other existing presses can bemodified, thanks to the oversized orig-inal design, increasing their pressingcapacity up to 45 or 50 kg/cm² in orderto allow the embossed finishing on theboards surface. ■

ACIMALLThe promotion plan for 2015 is approved

Acimall hasapprovedthe promo-tion planfor 2015,an agendaof events to support the Italian in-dustry of woodworking and furnitureproduction in the markets that offerthe best opportunities now or in thefuture.

Woodex - Teheran (Iran);1-4 February Ice/Acimall stand and importpartner searchDelhiwood - New Delhi (India)4-7 FebruaryIce/Acimall collective pavilion and import partner searchInterzum Guangzhou - (China); 28 March-1 AprilIce/Acimall collective pavilion and import partner searchLigna - Hannover (Germany); 11-15 May - Acimall standWoodworking - Minsk (Belarus);OctoberAcimall collective pavilion and import partner searchWoodex - Moscow (Russia); 24-27 NovemberIce/Acimall collective pavilion and import partner search

According to tradition, the activity ofthe Italian association of wood-working technology manufacturersincludes different initiatives based onthe peculiarities of the destinationmarket. In addition to the officialstand, the association organizes Ital-ian pavilions, an appreciated for-mula that allows exhibiting compa-nies to focus on their business, while relying on the services of-fered by organizers.

For the thirdconsecutiveyear, Italiancompanieswill also besuppo r ted

with an “Import partner search”service, whereby association officialsare identifying and selecting localcompanies to represent Italian tech-nology in their market. Another valu-able asset is the partnership with Ice-Italian Foreign Trade Agency, which has always supported Acimallin many promotion activities.

“The calendar is less crowded thanin the past – said Dario Corbetta, di-rector of Cepra-Centro promozionaleAcimall – but it introduces interest-ing news. The lower availability of re-sources for the "made in Italy" pro-motion system cannot certainly can-cel the commitment of Confindustria-member association on the promo-tion side; on the contrary, it encour-ages us to design new strategiesand to identify new tools to supportthe globalization of our businesses."

For instance, this is the origin of ourdecision to adopt an innovative ap-proach to our promotion plan, or-ganizing three market surveys in re-gions that, in the medium term, might offer interesting opportuni-ties. Acimall’s analysts, therefore, willgo to Morocco, Algeria and Cubato check the potential and the situ-ation of the respective industries. In 2015 and in early 2016, the Aci-mall calendar will provide interactionswith the preparations for Xylexpo2016, the biennial exhibition organ-ized by the Italian association, scheduled in Milan from 24 to 28May 2016. ■

AWARDSAhec sponsors the “Wood excellence prize”

COMPANIESKronospan: osb plant in Russia

www.xylon.it

News in real time

Kronospan holding has launched itsfirst Russian Osb mill in Egorievsk,Moscow region. This 350,000 m3 plant became fourthRussian Osb capacity, after mills of lo-cal players Hillman, Novovyatsky Lk andDok Kalevala. Holding's mill in Mogilev, Belarus alsostarted test production at the end of Au-gust, the rated capacity of this plant willbe 300,000 m3.Its products will be sold on the marketsof Western Europe and Russia. The company has recently published anadvertisement about the search of ex-clusive regional distributors in Russia. Osb imports into Russia in the first halfof 2014, meanwhile, decreased justslightly – by 3.3 percent to 283,600 m3.Prices for Romanian and Latvian Osbpanels began to decline in the autumnof 2013 and stabilized only in May 2014,which is likely due to increased com-petition. According to market players, the sup-pliers “are fighting literally for 5 roublesper sheet”, which is less than 1.5 per-cent of the value.■

At the recent World Architecture Festi-val the Alex Munroe Studio by Dsdhain London, UK was awarded the inau-gural “Wood Excellence Prize“ chosenfrom a shortlist of projects from aroundthe globe with the only criteria beingwood as an integral part. The shortlist included “The Tent” a de-lightful leisure facility in Nha Trang, Viet-nam by a21studio and the new RegionalTerminal at Christchurch Airport byDvn Donovan Hill in New Zealand.Others were drawn from China, Nether-lands, France and Australia. After pre-sentations by all the architects, the juryof four eminent judges awarded theprize to the London studio “for em-bracing innovation and for what it hadachieved in a tiny, tight and challeng-ing location with the use of Clt.” In the winning project the structurewas entirely made of pre-fabricated

structural panels and was calculated tohave removed 27.1 tonnes of CO2from the atmosphere. Internally, ac-cording to the designers Dsdha, thesimple timber finish is left exposed, pro-viding a robust setting for the bespokebuilt-in furniture all made of the sametimber. Over time, the interior will reveala patina of use, recording day to day life. The design team and contractor suc-cessfully met the challenges of a tightbuilding programme, some very de-manding planning constraints and com-plex construction details. Ahec also demonstrated at WAF itscommitment to promoting wood for thebuilt environment with an exhibition ofits latest science-based research onLife-Cycle Environmental Assessment. This now enables U.S. hardwood ex-porters to provide American HardwoodEnvironmental Profiles (Aheps) for in-dividual shipments of 21 differentspecies from forest to end-use productmanufacturer. This Lca has resulted inquantitative assessment of cradle-to-grave impact across six environmentalimpact categories to indicate carbonfootprint. The Prize was awarded by Mike Snow,Ahec Executive Director from Wash-ington Dc, at the Gala Dinner ending theevent, which will return to Singapore in2015. Waf is the largest annual festivaland live awards programme for theglobal architecture community. ■

EVENTSGiardina Finishing and Costa Levigatrici

After the positive experience of the open house held in Noven-ta di Piave, the other date has been at the Expobois in Paris, from 17 to 20 November.

“The first joint open house event has achieved the results wehad expected, namely to show to the big furniture companiesin the Pordenone-Treviso area the potential of “Gst Inerplus”technology, an application and Uv drying cycle that deliversexcellent quality surfaces, especially “High Gloss”, on tradi-tional substrates laminated with melamine papers or veneers”.That’s the comment by Stefano Tibè, sales manager of Gia-rdina Finishing, a few hours after the conclusion of the openhouse held last 6 to 8 November at Ovema in Noventa di Pi-ave (Venice). The event was sponsored by Costa Levigatrici from Schio, nearVicenza, a worldwide renowned brand for its sanding expertise, and Giardina Finishing from Figino Serenza (Como), a com-pany with a solid international reputation for painting opera-tions.

"Our common Agents have been cooperating for quite sometime in this area” – said Remo Costa, Italy manager for Cos-ta Levigatrici – We are here today for a specific event for thepresentation of a technological innovation in painting lines, byan important common Agent in a production area like Vene-to - Friuli, very important for Costa and Giardina. This joint ef-fort is needed to combine two complementary processes: paint-ing and sanding with very advantageous technical innovations. This is also an important opportunity for meeting with clientsof both Italian Companies and well-known leaders in their re-spective processes, Companies that are able to offer effec-tive and innovative technological solutions”.

The agents of the two companies made their goals immedi-ately clear from the debut, by reaffirming that they have all thetrumps to offer solutions also for industrial operations that re-quire a significant scope of plants and equipment. TheTriveneto area was not selected at random, as it is home to arestricted circle of businesspeople who guide the "big names"of Italian furniture in terms of volume and global market pen-etration, including a few semifinished product companies thatare among the giants of global furniture production. To take a close look at the most recent innovations, there wereall major customers and prospects. From 17 to 20 November, Giardina Finishing were again at Ex-pobois, in the Paris Nord Villepinte expo center. The goal isto seize all the opportunities that are still available around theworld, working closer and closer. ■

FAIRSFinal report of Orgatec 2014 held in Cologne

Orgatec 2014 came to a close on Sat-urday 25 October with extremely pos-itive results. The industry's opinionbarometer was clearly indicating ahigh! The leading international trade fairfor Office & Object showed stronggrowth, particularly in the areas of in-ternationality and quality as well as inthe range and diversity of products andservices. With more than 50,000 visitorsfrom more than 120 countries Orgatec2014 indicated a slight increase in vis-itor figures on 2012. This is due to thegrowth in international visitors (up 7 percent). The trade fair recorded a signif-icant, double-digit increase above all invisitors from the Middle East, NorthAmerica, North and South Africa andChina. Visitor figures from within Europewere also up, particularly visitors fromTurkey, Italy and Spain. With all 105,000

sqm of its exhibition space complete-ly booked up, the 624 exhibitors from41 countries with 66 percent of thosefrom abroad underlined Orgatec's in-ternational importance. Plenty of well-being, communication, technology and movement. Orgatec2014 had a strong focus on the no-ticeable changes in today's working en-vironment. A central theme was the de-sign of communication-friendly workplace concepts which simultaneouslyoffered places of retreat as locations forconcentrated work with a cosy atmos-phere. U.S. sawn hardwood exports to Europewere 201,000 m3 in the first six monthsof 2014, a 12.4 percent gain comparedto the same period the previous year.Export value increased 20 percent to$154.6 million. Trade was boosted by a40 percent rise in the volume of exportsto the Uk, which amounted to 53,910 m3during the six month period. Such wasthe pace of exports that the UK overtookItaly to become the largest volumemarket for U.S. sawn hardwood in thefirst half of 2014. Exports during the firstsix months of 2014 were also buoyed bya recovery in exports to Germany(+10% to 26,550m3), Spain (+13% to14940 m3), and Sweden (+31% to7,460 m3). Feria Habitat Valencia will launch its next edition, whichwill be held February 9th to the 13th at Feria Valencia; anew exclusive exhibition area for editing firms of Habitat. The new zone 'Editors', which is already being present-ed to the professionals of the sector, will host a group ofselected national and international editor products for theequipment of Habitat, with less than ten years of marketpresence and bet on the self-production.This is an unprecedented initiative in a professional fairof the sector where, to date, it was common for editors toexpose in a fair trade but not special or different from therest of the exhibitors area. With this proposal, FeriaHabitat Valencia responds to this new business model thatis being consolidated in the habitat sector influenced bynew marketing channels and the reorganization of the in-dustrial fabric of the furniture.Editing companies, in this sense, are meant to be small-sized enterprises and have a network of suppliers andworkshops that produce selected designs. especially in the groups of designers who have chosenentrepreneurship and are establishing new business in themarket of the Habitat. In fact, some of the editors who have already confirmedtheir participation at Feria Habitat Valencia are former ex-hibitors of Salon Nude of Feria Habitat Valencia, the con-solidated platform for young international designers. In this sense, the new zone 'Editors' appears as a natu-ral evolution in the way of the young designers to the mar-ket themselves. ■

FAIRSMade: from Moscow to Milan

Despite the worst fears caused by thedifficult socio-political situation in Rus-sia, the first edition of Made ExpoWorldWide held in Moscow October 15to 18 together with the Saloni World-Wide, reported positive results with40,483 registered players and journal-ists. Professionals and journalists al-ready for ten years at the Saloni had theopportunity to learn about solutionsfor interior design proposals from 66 Ital-ian companies in the sectors: floorand wall tiles, stone and other materi-als; interior doors and entry doors;handles; paints, plasters and materialsfor interior decoration; walls and parti-tions; ceilings; windows and facades. A little more than 150 days before theopening of the gates, Made Expo (Mi-lan 18 to 21 March 2015) is still the mostimportant trade fair for architectureand building recording, to date, a trendof +15 percent of square feet sold. This confirms, not obvious in the pres-ent context, the positive assessment thatthe market is making a multi specializedproposal covering the whole supply in-dustry "architecture and building con-struction". All the salons of the 2015 − Made Con-struction and Materials, Made Casingand Doors, Made and Interior Finishes,Made Software, Technologies and Serv-ices − have already exceeded two-thirds of the results of 2013 due to thepresence of both the protagonists ofboth small and medium-sized compa-nies. At the beginning of October started amedia investment in newspapers, na-tional radio, print, web and social chan-nels industry, which will continue untilMarch 2015, while abroad, with the sup-port of Ice, is in full swing promotion ac-tivities in the media through a numberof specialized and dedicated promo-tional meetings. ■

EUMABOIS

hen you talk about wood-working technology, themind goes to Germany,Italy, China and Taiwan, thebiggest manufacturers. Buthow much is the Euro-pean industry worth? Howdoes it stand versus Asian giants? Are we so strongoutside European borders? These general questionscannot be answered in detail even by industry experts.Let’s try to clear things up with a few figures...

According to Eumabois, in 2013 the European pro-duction of woodworking machinery and toolsamounted to 5,359 million Euro. To understand theimportance and strategic value of this industry, justthink that its turnover exceed the gross domestic prod-uct of Sierra Leone and many other African nations. In its survey among industry associations, Eumaboisestimates that Europe has more than one thousandsignificant compa-nies, with a total num-ber of employeesaround 35 thousand.Such significant fig-ures indicate that agood economic situa-tion cannot do withoutmanufacturing, andspecifically, a solid ma-chinery and plant con-struction industry. In the picture of the An-nual Report, Germanyand Italy are the lead-ing producers, with

market shares of 42 and 29percent respectively. Theyare followed by Austriawith 5 percent and Spainwith 3 percent of Euro-pean production. Whichshare of this production is

shipped outside Europe? According to the Eumaboissurvey, export propensity is equal to 31 percent, i.e.more than 1,600 million Euro. European technolo-gy import amounted to 616 million Euro, mostly com-ing from China and Taiwan.

These figures clearly suggest that “made in Europe”must be safeguarded; if 70 percent of European pro-duction is absorbed by European countries, thismeans that the best approach to expand businessis to promote our products within our borders. For thispurpose, Eumabois has been pushing a promotioncampaign for many years, highlighting concepts like

“Safety optimized in Europe”, “Quality devel-oped in Europe” or “Experience gained in Europe”in all industry exhibitions around the world.

But let’s go back to figures. What’s the final destina-tion of 1,600 million Euro shipped outside the Euro-pean borders? Asia first, with a 48 percent share, andthe Americas, with a 38 percent share. Looking at“economic areas”, the top destinations are the Briccountries, spending more than 700 million Euro, andthe Nafta region, which absorbs close to 350 million. Useful hints also come from the analysis of foreigntrade by destination country. In Africa, two major mar-kets are emerging. The biggest one in absolute val-ue is South Africa, which acquired 34.4 million Euro

woodworking technology in 2013. This marketrecorded a positive rebound by over 50 percent, main-ly due to transactions related to the customs code ofpresses for particleboard and Mdf panels. The second African market is Algeria, which ab-sorbed over 23 million Euro in 2013: in this case, themost requested product category is combined ma-chinery, with and without workpiece reprise.

In North America, the United States take a leadingrole, with over 260 million Euro purchases in 2013.This area is so important that the definition of "mar-ket" seems reductive. From an economic standpointand for their role in the definition of marketing strate-gies for companies, the United States are at least asub-continent. All customs codes show high values.

The number of spare parts isvery interesting: last year, Euro-pean manufacturers deliveredparts worth over 57 million Euro.In South America, the primarymarket has always been Brazil. The year under scrutiny was notreally positive for that country: Eu-ropean export collapsed by 49percent, down to 92 million Euro. The heaviest drop affected pan-el presses, boring and mortisingmachines. Among other LatinAmerican countries, bad newsfrom Chile and Colombia, downby 37 and 30 percent respectively, while virtuous examples areEcuador and Peru, with positivetrends by more than 10 percent.

EUMABOIS

Let’s take a look at Asia now, the top destination ofEuropean woodworking technology. In terms ofsize, China is the only market that compares to theUnited States, with over 205 million Euro. Unlike theAmerican giant, China closed 2013 with a negativesign, losing almost 20 percent from 2012. These fig-ures, and most of all these variations, should be con-sidered within a situation of very dynamic trend. TheChinese market is one of the most important world-wide, and despite the slight drop, it will play a lead-ing role in the coming years. In South East Asia, themost interesting data come from Indonesia. In2013, European machinery purchases exceeded 15million Euro, up by 73 percent. These positive figures

were repeated in 2014, electing Indonesia to a roleof leadership within the region. In the Middle East, it is worth mentioning Israel, whichdespite political tension keeps offering significant vol-umes of transactions with Europe: almost 17 millionEuro were spent to buy European machinery in 2013,basically the same as in 2012.Let’s close with Australia, which last year did notrecord a very positive performance, dropping by over20 percent. Nevertheless, industry representatives areoptimistic and expect great results in the current year.

We presented several figures, which beyond specifictrends and variations indicate an established trend

towards the globalization of thewoodworking industry. Com-petitive companies have a glob-al organization and are able toapproach neighbor and remotemarkets. The very dynamic sit-uation is forcing companies toseize opportunities as they arisein emerging countries and inthose that will emerge in the fu-ture. So, it is mandatory to de-velop an investment strategyfor research and innovation. Ahigh-end high-tech product isnot enough without a marketingstrategy that supports productpositioning in specific markets. And how do you select thesemarkets? Also in this case, ef-fective business strategy re-quires an accurate “market se-lection” process; it might be ex-pensive, but it will bring great sat-isfaction in the long term. ■

November-December 2014 XYLON INTERNATIONAL 19

Several hints and news for the future emergedat the annual assembly of Eumabois – the Fed-eration that gathers 14 national associations ofwoodworking technology and accessory man-ufacturers – held last Friday, September 12, inVerona, Italy. The event was hosted by Acimall, the Confind-ustria member association that gathers the Ital-ian manufacturers of wood processing machin-ery and accessories. Eleven countries partic-ipated (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland,France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Czech Repub-lic, Russia and Spain) through the representativesof the respective national association. Portugal and Slovakia were absent.

Aimsad, the Turkish association of woodworkingtechnology, components and semifinished ma-terials companies that recently joined Eum-abois, was also represented.

President Ambrogio Delachi opened the meet-ing with an analysis of the current market situa-tion, characterized by uncertainty and instabil-ity, as shown by recent political tension in Rus-sia and Brazil. To overcome this period, the pres-ident said, we need to “introduce merging andpartnership processes both in manufacturingand in sales, so as to empower the organizationand be able to face challenges that will inevitably increase”.

There are significant news and enhancementplans for existing activities. This is the key top-ic in the agenda of the Eumabois Assembly. The assembly then continued with an analysis ofthe exhibitions network, a “core business” forEumabois.

Among big news, it was reaffirmed that Finlandwill have only one industry exhibition to be heldin Jyväskylä (the next edition is scheduled in Sep-tember 2015). The Eumabois secretariat alsomentioned two new entries to the network, namely Fenafor in Lima, Peru, and Iwf, the bi-ennial show held in Atlanta, US.

EXHIBITIONS AND NEW MARKETS: BIG NEWS FOR EUMABOIS

The assembly also focused on current negoti-ations with exhibitions in emerging markets suchas Chile, Colombia and Iran.

Among other news, President Ambrogio Delachialso reported the decision to create a workinggroup within the Eumabois Board, made up ofVice President Juergen Koppel, the Swiss rep-resentative Erich Zeller and Carlo Alberto Stra-da, who will take the role of Eumabois activity co-ordinator starting from January 2015. This group will be in charge for the definition ofnew evaluation criteria for exhibitions sup-ported by the Federation. Their mission will beaimed at increasing the credibility and value ofexhibitions within the Eumabois network to-wards their target audience. The agenda also included a discussion of tech-nical/standard topics, an area where the Fed-eration has been working for many years with ex-cellent results. Eumabois is financing the man-agement of technical committees in charge forthe definition of safety standards for woodworkingmachinery in Europe and worldwide.

Last but not least, the promotion of “made in Eu-rope” was also dealt with. President Delachistressed that “to enhance the image of Eumaboiswe have to work together with international ex-hibition organizers in order to achieve system-wide growth”. The Federation secretariat wasentrusted to collect advice and suggestions fromall stakeholders to define an innovative marketingplan in 2015.

The meeting ended with the information that thenext assembly will be hosted by Symop (theFrench association of instrumental mechanicalequipment), in a date and location still to be de-fined.

INNOVATION

The European Community provides companiesbased in its territory with funds to support researchand development, innovation and introductionof innovative products to the market. These funds are contributed by all member coun-tries. As we know, Italy is not among the best usersof such funds, with the result that we actually givefinancial resources to foreign competitors.

Some virtuous companies are trying to changethings, also in our industry, leveraging the oppor-tunities offered by Europe. One of these is the Imal-Pal group, an Italian leader in the construction ofcomplete wood-based panel plants, and a mem-ber of Acimall. These two companies are mid-sized,well-organized and growing, against the currenttrend of crisis and stagnation.

In this article we present two projects supported bythe “Life” program, a funding instrument fortechnological innovation with an eye to environmentand sustainability, aiming at reducing environmentalimpact through an optimized use of resources. Aci-mall is involved as partner in these projects for in-formation and promotion.

HIGH PRESSURE RESINATION SYSTEMImal’s project “Hprs-High Pressure ResinationSystem” (www.hprsproject.eu) is designed tominimize the quantity of resin (glue) in wood-basedpanels.The starting point is conventional manufacturingprocesses, where wood chips or fibers are con-veyed at high speed through drums where the gluemixture is injected through nozzles at fixed pres-

THE EC PROGRAM “LIFE”,AN OPPORTUNITY FOR BUSINESSESThe definition of new processes is supported by a partnership between companies and the European Union, with financial resources for the development of real innovation. The experience of projects “Hprs” by Imal and “Plastic Killer” by Pal.

November-December 2014 XYLON INTERNATIONAL 21

sure and spread without any accurate control of theproportions between resin and wood. This results into panels with a resin content equalto 30 percent of their weight (Mdf).

The most popular resins, in view of the structuralproperties they lend to the panel, are based on ureaand formaldehyde, whereby the latter is partially re-leased into the environment and is harmful to health.

The “Hprs” solutions adopts special nozzles (in-jectors) provided with a variable diameter orifice toadjust and control resin pressure while preservingits high speed, in order to achieve a quick and evendistribution of glue onto the chip or strand layer.“Hprs” also introduces a surface-related instead ofweight-related process, i.e. the quantity of resin isproportional to the surface to be glued rather thanto the weight of wood particles, which is more sen-sible and logical. This approach helps reduce excessive resin con-sumption and consequently achieve an optimal mix-ing process.Simply stated, if resin is dosed and spread moreefficiently, you can reduce the exceeding quanti-ty, which was necessary in the conventionalprocess to compensate for inaccurate distributionmonitoring.

Significant results are expected: “Hprs” cuts resinconsumption by 10 to 20 percent, according to thepanel type and the previous process. As glue represents approximately 80 percent of pan-el costs, the benefit is significant. In addition, yousave 15 percent energy in the mixing process, plusanother 5 percent in Mdf drying.

If you should apply “Hprs” to the entire productionof wood-based panels in Italy and worldwide, youwould get a massive reduction of carbon footprint. So, the benefits are not only for business, but alsofor environment and health. After twelve months of design and inspections indifferent factories for the definition of operating pa-rameters, Imal has built a prototype line in collab-oration with their Spanish partner Colomer, installingit at the end of August at another patner, Xilopanin Cicognola (Pavia).

Installation and startup were fully successful, thanks to optimal scheduling of equipment down-time for maintenance and other activities requiredto restore the full operations of Xilopan’s processline from September 1. In October they started to check consumption rates, the variation of process parameters and the sub-sequent mechanical checks in order to improve

A rendering of the “Hprs” injector.

measured performance. Early data collections indicate a 15 percent re-duction of glue consumption; the results will haveto be confirmed by different tests to achieve vali-dation by the end of January, in line with the sched-ule.

The industrialization of new components has alreadytranslated into a reduction of nozzle costs below onehalf of the expected cost. Meanwhile, three batches of 500 cubic meters ofprototype panels will be produced, one batch foreach type of panel, namely particleboard, Mdf andOsb. Prototypes will be tested according to tech-nical standards on the quality and performance ofwood-based panels.

PLASTIC KILLERThe “Plastic Killer” project (www.plastickiller.eu)by Pal is an innovative system to remove all plas-tic residues from recycled wood, so that it can beused instead of virgin wood to make high-qualitypanels or clean fuel. Currently, panels, especially Mdf, are made fromvirgin wood and only a small portion of recycledwood (up to 10 percent, according to Pal’s own mar-ket surveys). The reason is that the process to cleanrecycled wood from impurities and other materialsrequires several stages but cannot eliminate all for-eign parts completely. So, Mdf panels are low qual-ity, not suitable to meet the technical standards forpanel quality. At present, no system exists toachieve an adequate separation of impurities, but demand is growing for clean recycled wood toreplace virgin wood.

“Plastic Killer” fills this gap, providing totally puri-fied recycled wood that can be used to make high-quality, compliant Mdf panels, more sustainably andcost-effectively: it has been estimated that up to 60percent of production might come from recycledwood. The wood processed by "Plastic Killer" is so purethat it can also be used as biomass for clean en-ergy generation, without the risk of pollutants re-leased from plastic materials, as the latter are com-pletely eliminated. This will help reduce the use of a limited resourcesuch as virgin wood, sparing it for applications thatcannot do without, and extending the lifecycle ofalready used material.

The project will encourage wood recycling in theEuropean Union, paving the way to new businessand job opportunities, and contributing to relievingthe pressure on dumping sites in the medium term.Benefits from an economic and environmentalstandpoint are significant.

With only 58 kilowatt installed power, the plant canprocess about 30 cubic meters per hour of woodwastes, equal to some 78 tons daily. Removed plas-tics can also be recycled, and Pal estimates thatthere will be 750 kilos each day based on their ex-perience. If waste wood must be used as fuel, re-moving plastic residues heavily cuts pollutingemissions.

Going back to wood, if it is used to make Mdf pan-els, it avoids cutting 40 trees every day, whichmeans 9,600 trees annually (considering workingdays only). Considering carbon dioxide (CO2)trapped in trees (approx. 0.9 equivalent tons percubic meter) and no longer released during trans-port (based on an average forest-to-factory distanceof 300 km and the emissions from trucks by km andton), you get a total reduction of CO2 emissions yapproximately 88 equivalent tons each day. From an economic standpoint, assuming averagevirgin wood costs of 70 Euro/ton, versus 40 Eurofor recycled wood, savings are huge and estimat-ed at 2,340 Euro daily, which means more than 500thousand Euro annually.

Finally, “Plastic Killer”, unlike other conventionalplants, uses no water. Considering the volume ofprocessed wasted indicated above, water savingamounts to more than nine thousand cubic metersannually, equal to the average consumption of 46European families.Machine parameters were defined and its designcompleted in line with the planned schedule; pro-totype construction is starting soon and installationis planned in January 2015.

We will keep you updated from these pages aboutthe developments of these projects and theachieved results, as well as other similar projects.

PEOPLE

24 XYLON INTERNATIONAL November-December 2014

Where is wood technology going? Is there a shared approach to respond to user demands? What is the role of software for future success? Federico Ratti, technical director of Scm Group since 2009, shared his vision.

We have experienced “intensive” months, full ofworries for the economic situation, but alsoevents, meetings, opportunities to understandwhere the variegated universe of wood tech-nology is going. Months of open-house events, above all, scheduled one after another in thesecond half of 2014, as reported in this and thenext issue of our magazine. We also had the opportunity to talk with Fed-erico Ratti, technical director of Scm Group forfive years now. A major role, standing on theship deck to coordinate and spur, a ship thatsails in the seas of technical innovation, identi-fication and upgrade of technological solutions.

“Software. If I should pick one, this is the key-word for this season. The way machines, linesand technology think, their reasoning skills, that’s what makes the difference more and moreoften”, Ratti says.“Our group has invested massively in this area, creating a “software suite” that is completeand, most of all, based on applications, field ex-perience, process knowledge, the real needsof those who use machines every day”.

How is your architecture organized?“The core of our system is “Xilog Maestro”, thecad-cam interface installed on our working cen-ters and used by operators to design and pro-gram. We have taken giant steps, let me tellyou, providing our customers with a tools to de-sign in 3D and preview machine operations, also in 3D. It can be used by anyone, as alltools are extremely simple and it incorporatesall the specific features of effective cam, “fo-

cused” on our two target industries, namely fur-niture, panel processing, and solid wood, pro-duction of window elements. It’s a high-qualitysolution if you consider that it is an embeddedsoftware, “included” onboard a machine tool. “Xilog Maestro” is also perfect to control boringmachines, not only for working centers, and itcan be expanded with a “Maestro Edge” mod-ule for edgebanding.

The underlying logic is the same, i.e. you tell themachine what it should do, which element youneed, and then the system will generate all nec-essary instructions that explain "how to". An ex-ample: you indicate that a certain element mustbe finished with a three-millimeter edge; thesoftware takes care of everything, selects themost suitable feed speed and glue tempera-ture, the cutting depth of finishing aggregates...We release the operator from the annoyance toknow all about processing technology, so that

he can focus on the final result. Technologicalskills and expertise are inside the software; theoperator adds creativity and design”.

It seems quite simple...“It is! If you invest in technology, you must notbe forced to employ an engineer. Ease of use isa great value for small and medium businesses, but we are also pushing it upwards, into morecomplex lines, supervisory systems... but I’ll tellyou about that later on. Let me add that “XilogMaestro” is the core of a system offering a fullset of features, aggregated software modulesthat specifically solve additional needs. “XilogMaestro” has a module to handle advancednesting; “Maestro WD” is an effective modulefor the cost-efficient production of windows,“Maestro Cabinet” is an add-on for box designand production. By the way, our platform in-cludes “MSL Connector”, a system that easilyconnects all modules from external suppliers, a

simplified interface included in themachine price that minimizes orcancels any cost for the cus-tomization of third-party software. But there is much more, includingthe simulation software “Pro View”I have already mentioned. Once you have designed the ele-ment to be produced and gener-ated the program to be executedby the machine, you will be able tosimulate the cycle, to check thateverything is right, eliminating allrisks of errors while exactly calcu-lating production time and costs”.

Realization with “Xilog Maestro” software of the model car“Cambiano”, designed by Pininfarina.

A full package with several benefits...“Sure. Our software includes modules for re-porting, maintenance or to control the posi-tioning of bars on automated worktable, ofclamps and/or vacuum cups. Until few yearsago, all these capabilities were outsourced toexternal suppliers, now they are “onboard”, in-cluded in the machine, fully integrated. The“Xilog Maestro” suite is an essential ele-ment, full-featured and available on all ourworking centers, from entry-level to high-performance, which means that we provide allour customers with top-notch technology; thisis the resultof an exten-sive industri-alization andin-depth re-organizationprocess that

has changed the company in recent years andhas pooled several things together”.

Mr. Ratti, a while ago you mentioned line su-pervisory systems... “This is another area of our software strategy.First of all, I can tell that we are probably theonly company that has developed this kind ofproduct internally. “Watch” is a new-generationsupervisor that allows to control our plants com-pletely. It incorporates all you need to supervisethe operation of a line, to send programs toeach operating machine, to generate reportsand to trigger alarms. It has been up and run-ning for a couple of years with many customersin panel processing and window componentproduction, and the feedback is positive. Also because it is very easy to use. I said it be-fore and I am going back now: until recently, aproduction line was for mass production, for bigvolumes. It’s no longer like that: the rule is“batch one”, make one piece different from theother. Our supervisory system must handle pri-orities and other conditions to offer the mostcost-effective management of a productioncycle. Just like “Xilog Maestro”, we have incor-porated several functions: the control of boringlines, of panel sawing with “Win Cut”, of inven-tory with “Watch Store”, of edgebanding with

"iTouch"..There is much talking aboutsoftware, but whenprospects take a closer lookto check what's really "in-side” software, and compareperformance, they immedi-ately realize which is thebest choice! We started todevelop “Watch” beforemany others and we are still

one step ahead...In recent years many things havechanged: in 2009 our machines useddifferent software, often purchasedfrom third parties, with equivalent fea-tures. We decided to bring the know-how back home, integrating whatcould be integrated and making clearchoices. Now we master not only tech-nology, but also software”.

What are you working at now, in the softwaredomain?“We are focusing on sawing: in few months weare introducing a brand new version of “OttimoCut”, a dedicated software for this processstage. It will be a revolutionary change, a newlevel of performance in cutting optimization, based on a new engine that leverages a pow-erful algorithm developed by the MathematicsDepartment of an Italian university. It is going tobe a revolution for a technology that has basi-cally remained the same for decades. We willreduce cutting schemes dramatically, achiev-ing very short cycle time, with an optimizedprocess that reduces waste by 50 percent, andcalculation twenty times shorter than today! All of this with a very powerful algorithm that isoffering unimaginable results, cutting longhours of calculations to handle a big orderdown to few minutes! Similarly, we are analyz-ing the issue of boring optimization, toachieve revolutionary results within one yearalso in this area: the working approach adoptedfor sawing is proving effective also in other do-mains”.

THE FUTUREMr. Ratti, you have several irons in the fire. Whatabout technology and equipment?“I can tell you about “Accord WD” in view of the

upcoming Scm Group event dedicated to win-dow technology, the “Technology Days Doorsand Windows” to be held in Rimini from 5 to 7February 2015. It is an automated cell for win-dow production, delivering one piece in lessthan two minutes, and it can be used as an ef-ficient multipurpose working center”, says thetechnical director of Scm Group. “We are push-ing strong on this solution, as we believe it stillhas huge potential to express in the wood andfurniture industry. It’s a working center that can operate unat-tended, with a robotized loading and unloadingsystem, without ever stopping; its key strengthsare the clamping systems, an exclusive solu-tion by Scm, consisting of square clamps withanti-rotation and anti-tilting properties, with spe-cial shapes for complex profiles... in this areawe are really ahead of competitors. An exam-ple is “Brc”, a compact, fast and flexible ag-gregate that can saw, bore, mill… only Scm hasthis system, which enables us to achieve in-comparable productivity!”.

OPEN HOUSE

It’s a long time since I wrote my latest technical ar-ticle. Frankly, I don’t think the industry missed this:inside and outside Xylon, there are definitely thosewho can do this job better than I can

What the industry did miss, instead, was innova-tion in traditional machines for small and medi-um joiner workshops, a domain that has not ben-efited from the same developments of working cen-ters, edgebanding machines or painting robots, justto mention a few examples.

It’s true: traditional machines have got nicer; elec-tronics has set through; accuracy is higher; but ba-sically, they have not changed in the past fewdecades.

In this scenario of what we might call “evolution sta-bility”, a newsletter from Fimal in Fano (PesaroUrbino) put a number of questions without any an-swer. Here are a few examples. Why must a squaring machine necessarily have twoblades? Why does it take so much space?

FIMAL CREATES A NEW SEGMENTIN TRADITIONAL MACHINERY“Concept 350” is the new machine presented by Fimal at an open-house event held a few weeks ago. A smart machine, based on a definitely strong concept...

Page 31: N -D N · Post Sicam 2014: meetings and products ECONOMY “Eumabois Annual report” Beauty, efficiency, nature … since 1934 Basso Legnami srl - Via dell’Artigianato, 6 - 13040

Why can’t it produce more? Why is the operator forcedto move together with thepanel?

I believe you are also curi-ous about these questions. So I decided to attend theopen house organized byFimal at their headquar-ters (14 to 16 Novemberlast), to introduce a new so-lution that gives all the an-swers.

FIMAL’S MISSIONA couple of words about Fi-mal, an acronym for Fab-brica Italiana MAcchineLegno (Italian wood ma-chinery factory). The company was createdin June 2013 as the suc-cessor of Paoloni Mac-chine, a historical brandin the medium-high end oftraditional machinery forjoiners and medium indus-trial businesses; it took over the brand and con-tinued production at the Fano factory.

A short time has passed, but it was enough for Fi-mal to plan and design a new machine, to contructit and then introduce it at a “three days openhouse” event.

The star of the open house and of this article, is anew machine called “Concept 350”.

Having understood and identified new needs in themarket, Fimal’s engineers, in close cooperation withsalespeople, have designed a machine that standsbetween a conventional squaring machine and ahorizontal panel saw, both included in the com-pany's portfolio.

They chose concept to indicate a new wood pro-cessing concept, while 350 is the blade diameter. To make it even more unique, the machine will bedistributed with the Fimal brand only, while in oth-er machines Fimal stands next to Paoloni.

TECHNICAL FEATURESLet’s take a look at technical specifications and theanswers to all questions (within the web site you canwatch a video showing the machine during the pro-cessing steps). With 3670x2840x1530 mm footprint, “Concept350” takes approximately half the space of a tra-ditional squaring machine. Its core elements include a worktable to feed pan-els (the machine is supplied in three different sizesfor sawing panels up to 2600, 3200 and 380 mmwidth, with a maximum thickness cutting of 105mm), a workpiece clamp during operation and adisk blade that runs along a longitudinal guide.“Concept 350” has no moving volumes: onceplaced on the worktable, the panel does notmove. Both cutting and feeding movements havebeen transferred to the tool that runs within the baseon a blade carriage. There is no need for two blades. There is no scor-ing unit, whose functionality is replaced by the mainblade that performs the scoring action during thefirst stroke and cutting during the back stroke.

Page 32: N -D N · Post Sicam 2014: meetings and products ECONOMY “Eumabois Annual report” Beauty, efficiency, nature … since 1934 Basso Legnami srl - Via dell’Artigianato, 6 - 13040

30 XYLON INTERNATIONAL November-December 2014

OPEN HOUSE

It is safe: there is no guard that can be removed, creating possible hazard. The upper pressure bar locks the workpiece ontothe table, while the blade emerges from below andmoves along the guide, but completely covered bythe pressure bar.

It is silent: the pressure bar fully covers the bladeduring cutting, absorbing much of its noise.

It is more productive: the blade carriage speed upto 40 meters per minute, requires half the time forcutting than a traditional squaring machine.

Among other peculiarities should be noted the Bake-lite that totally covers the worktable, reducing dras-tically the compression load on the structure, thusfacilitating its handling.

I asked Cinzia Facchini and Stefano Morselli, Fi-mal co-owners, why you should buy “Concept 350”.Here are there answers: to streamline processingstages, to have excellent cutting, to producemore, in one word... to improve, and all this in half

the space of a traditional machine. And what's the price of improvement? According to the company, the final cost for usersis the same as a mid-range squaring machine.

Fimal’s international sales network attended theopen-house and was enthusiastic about the pres-entation.Are we standing before a technological develop-ment that has opened a new market segment in tra-ditional machines for joiners?Maybe, the market will tell. All I can do is offer my best wishes to the compa-ny and their staff, who devoted all their passion tothis project.

OPEN HOUSE

An open-space event gathered over 2,500 peoplein Pesaro from about forty countries, with a reviewof thirty technology and software solutions from thelatest generation of machine tools for wood, glassand stone machining. Plus a touch of mechatron-ics... All of this inside the new 5-thousand-square-meter "concept space" created for customers, em-ployees, sales staff, partners and institutions, any-one interested in taking a closer look at technolo-gy, products and processes branded “BiesseGroup”. This is a concise summary of the latest ““bIn-side”. As soon as you entered, it was clear that therewas something new, a representation of the manyfacets of a group with an all-round approach, in areception area with plenty of marble, glass andwood, with a huge window looking onto sshowroom,to show immediately who Biesse is and what it does.A space designed not only for the presentation ofmachinery and plants, but as a meeting andworking area, to exchange experiences with all part-ners and actors.

THE EVENTAmong technology solutions on stage, the lines andsystems for the automation of panel handling op-erations integrate and optimize the sawing, edg-banding and numerical control processing cycles, meeting the requirements of family-run business-es as well as big industrial groups. Spotlights were cast onto ““Akron 1440”, that canautomatically handle an entire finishing cycle on foursides, leveraging a workpiece return system thatalso “turns” the piece on the side to be edgebandedand sends it “off line” once the job is completed.Another highlight was the flexible inline edgeban-der ““Biesse Insider FT 32”, designed to handle dif-ferent pieces in sequence with zero setup, executingad-hoc drilling schemes at a speed from three tothirty pieces per minute. These are just examples of the wide range of tech-nology offered by Biesse, more and more power-ful, accurate and automated, featuring best-in-classintegration between operating machines and lifting,

At their latest open house, the Pesaro-based Biesse Group quantified – with hard figures – their global “weight” in terms of offer and visibility in the wood technology industry and beyond. The setting was the newly inaugurated “concept space”.

NEW IMAGE AND CONTINUOUS INNOVATION, BIESSE SPEEDS UP

handling and positioning systems. These lines canexecute squaring, edgebanding and boring op-erations based on orders uploaded by the customerinto the IT system, at rates of 10 thousand piecesper working shift.

SOFTWARESoftware – as Biesse clearly stressed – is the acein the hole of the recent history of the Pesaro-basedgroup, the new and most fascinating frontier of re-search and development for any machine. The ex-pansion of the “bSuite” family, with the introductionof “bCabinet", "bProcess” and “bNest” modules, isaimed at supporting, streamlining and improvingthe daily business of furniture makers, not only forthe management of all machines inside a line, butalso to show that the group can be a reference forthis kind of needs.

WINDOWSSpecial attention was dedicated to wwindows, witha special exhibition area that displayed leading-edge solutions for window manufacturing. Therewere all the milestones of Biesse in this specific in-dustry, from the ““Rover” working centers to the ““Uni-line” range, presented in a new version with auto-mated loading and unloading, offering a daily ca-pacity of 10, 20 and 40 windows, according to theconfiguration implemented by the user, with a“buffer” that enables unattended operation. De-served visibility also for ““Winline One”, a multiplecenter for windows that can achieve higher pro-ductivity, especially as a result of a huge “smart”multilevel buffer that can be loaded with a few hun-dred elements, entrusting all the rest to the machine, again in unattended operation.

MADE WITH BIESSEThis is not the first time that anopen-house event also fea-tures the products made withthe exhibited machines, asevidence of collaboration andsynergy with customers. Ex-amples of ““made with Biesse”came from parts by FFiam, abrand that needs no intro-duction and that brought realdesign icons to Pesaro, glasscreations by masters like CiniBoeri, Massimiliano Fuksasand Daniel Libeskind. vocation to innovation, not only for products butthroughout the supply chain, delivering new visionsand new ways of living – enriched the Pesaro dayswith a few examples of their design and produc-tion work, resulting from a story that Biesse Grouphas been sharing for a long time.

STEFANO PORCELLINILet’s take one step back, to the beginning of an in-tensive day also dedicated to trade media andopened with a meeting with SStefano Porcellini, chiefexecutive officer of the group. It was a pleasure tomeet him, especially − he will forgive us... − be-cause it is getting more and more difficult to hearsome optimism and encouraging figures...

“We are celebrating 2014 with satisfaction as it isclosing positively”, Porcellini said. “In the secondpart of 2013, we invested in people, technology andsoftware, as well as in our sales and marketing op-erations. This decision is proving right, and figuresare on our side. We can say, with good satisfaction, that as of Sep-tember 1st, Biesse has stopped using unemploy-ment subsidies and the entire workforce is back onduty. Not only: iincoming orders in the wood divi-sion have been increasing by more than 20 per-cent”.“We cannot deny this is a season of good resultsfor us”, Porcellini added. “But let’s stand with feeton the ground, we have to keep our eyes wide openin periods like this, with quite a few problems or neg-ative trends in major markets that must be tackledwith. Last year we went back to a positive balance, and also in 2014 we are recording significant re-sults thanks to this growth. I repeat: we are not float-

ing inside a bubble of unconscious satisfaction, butthe trend is very positive”.Talking about Italy, Porcellini quickly described thesituation of the domestic market. We export 90 per-cent of our production”, he said. “In Italy, there isstill a clear, serious ccredit crunch, with a good num-ber of deals but less customers than in the past, because the cash flow expected for a rally of econ-omy has not arrived, yet. But we are still goingthrough a phase of development, I say it again, webelieve in this trend and are willing to invest mas-sively… and we are proud that we have brought allour colleagues back to work…”.We wonder, and we asked Porcellini, where suchpositive results come from. And Porcellini an-swered: “We have been working on pproduct relia-bility. We have employed 65 salespeople in sixmonths. We have made significant and fast in-vestments. We “leveraged” 2012 to improve ourbusiness health, working with great commitment un-til spring 2013. And one year ago we changed ourimage, following the arrival of RRaphael Prati, Cor-porate Marketing & Communications Director, who renovated corporate communications, help-ing us attend the most important exhibitions witha powerful image. Meanwhile, we improved thequality of our products and customer service, whichhas become an even stronger success factor.Biesse has always been considered an Italian com-pany that compares with German production, and this vision is based on the commitment toequipment reliability and accurate details, two el-ements that our owner Giancarlo Selci is keen on”.

OPEN HOUSE

Cefla opened their doors for the fifth edition of “Ce-fla Live” in Imola (Bologna), last October. The mis-sion was to display their latest news in the show-room, taking the time to get an insight and to zeroin on new technology and innovation. This is thespecialty of Cefla Finishing Group, a specialist incoating, decoration, digital printing for wood andwood-based materials, but also a company that de-signs and builds turnkey custom plants for glass, plastic, fiber-cement, composites and metal. Fromfurniture to automotive, up to aerospace. All group companies and brands were show-cased, with live demos involving all the machinesand technology available in the laboratory and ac-cessible to visitors: Cefla Finishing, Delle Vedove,DV-Systems, Düspohl, Falcioni and Sorbini. The re-sults are measured out in hard figures: the eventwas attended by the representatives of 245 com-panies from 32 countries, plus some thirty partnersincluding paint, pump, spraying gun and abrasivemanufacturers, who leveraged the opportunity toshow the use of their products on Cefla equipment.

The “Cefla Finishing Lab” offered an exhaustiveoverview of the entire portfolio. In the forefront, thelatest additions to the sprayer and robot family,

“iGiottoApp” and “Mito K”, which add to established“Easy”, “Prima”, “iBotic” and “iGiotto”.

“iGiottoApp”, branded Cefla Finishing, is an an-thropomorphous robot for the 3D item and panelpainting: with its 3D scanner it can integrate the bestcoating technology flexibly, both with modern wa-ter-based products and with solvent coatings, while cutting paint consumption and environmen-tal impact. "Mito K”, also by Cefla Finishing, is thenew swiveling spraying machine with one or twoarms, offering high flexibility and measurable sav-ings in applications, also suitable for small andmedium businesses. Big news also in digital printing. In collaboration withthe 3D scanner manufacturer Cruse, the scanningfunctionality was integrated with the “Cefla Pixart”digital printing system, which can now deliver pho-torealistic results beyond 2D. Great interest also for Sorbini’s “Inert Coating Tech-nology” system, a process that can achieve highquality in panel preparation while cutting operat-ing costs significantly; the solution is accessible notonly for new installations, but also for existing lines.Cefla is also continuing to develop “Fusion Coat-ing Technology” – born from a partnership with

“CEFLA LIVE”: SUCCESS NUMBER FIVE!The best of research and new products by Cefla Finishing Group was the core of the open-house event staged in October in Imola. An occasion not-to-be-missed to meet customers and strategic partners.

Henkel, the giant of glues and chemical products– which created “UV hot-melt”, an ideal product toensure perfect adhesion and flatness on coloredand decorated melamine-faced panels, bothglossy and matte.

“Cefla Live” visitors could also see a window paint-ing line in action, featuring “iGiotto” by Falcioni andtwo application systems for profiles: the “Performa”sprayer and the “Talent” vacuum system, both byDelle Vedove.

RICCARDO QUATTRINI AND ALBERTO MAESTRI“This is an occasion to present the biggest tech-nology news and a preview of our next develop-ments”, says Riccardo Quattrini, Managing di-rector, Cefla Finishing Group.

“We can host the big play-ers and establish a direct relationship withthem, illustrating our tech-nology in the best way, to-gether with our experts. We can discuss with cus-tomers and develop our so-lutions to a further extent. For instance, we can showhow we are responding to

a hot topic like cost-effective cycle, basically in-novating the robotic parts of our systems, alwayspursuing high quality combined with great flexibility. “iGiottoApp” is definitely the plant that mostlymatches this concept, as it can handle a good num-ber of changes in shape, geometry and color. Thisapproach, already adopted in wood and panel pro-cessing, had not been introduced in painting so far. With “iGiottoApp” you can process very small batch-es, but also handle large-scale production, althoughthe key aspect is to automate the process, elim-inating the need of a skilled operator. This machineconcept performs an automatic 3D recognitionof any shape and generates the necessary programfor the cycle to be carried out. The operator onlyneeds to identify preset parameters inside the “his-tory" of the company, according to the desired fin-ishing. Consistent quality is the first result, highlyappreciated by a market that pays increasing at-tention to specific benefits. We were even positivelysurprised by the response we are collecting, notonly from the most important industrial districts, butalso from Brazil or emerging countries.

Let me point out the high attendance rates from Eu-rope, Russia, China, Central and Latin America, es-pecially Mexico and Columbia. These are significant trends, as 2014 is going toclose with an export share above 90 percent".

“This situation is similar to the Italian market”, addsAlberto Maestri, Sales director of the Finishing Di-vision. “Investmentcome from compa-nies that have facedthe crisis by in-creasing their exportshare. They invest to pro-duce better, withhigher quality andlower costs".

“The foreign market is essential”, Quattrini contin-ues. “There is much talking about Africa, but onlythe northern region will bring significant orders. India is still a big question mark, due to poor in-frastructures and bureaucracy; we are recordingtotally different results, really excellent, in China,

which is currently investing in first-level automation, with several big companies looking for the besttechnology. Brazil is another big market, but it is going up anddown. This is an excellent period also in the Unit-ed States, with a rally of investments in local pro-duction after the offshoring wave in the Nineties. Now they are keener on quality, and therefore, ourmajor US customers are back to invest in big plantsafter a strong crisis”.“The Chinese giant – Quattrini continues − identi-fies high quality with glossy finishes and a designinspired to Europe. In the US, on the contrary, they still prefer traditionalfurniture, although the market is changing in termsof visual impact, quality and functionality. The highend, offering great design and top quality, is ob-viously available also in China and the United States. The same differences are found in windows. US-made windows are totally different from ours, they are mainly conceived for energy savingrather than design and decoration elements. In China, especially in the North, solid wood win-dows are in great demand, and we are the only sup-plier offering an integrated solution for painting andwrapping, with a specific development based onUv coatings. In other words, we can collaborate andmake windows that can be customized to customerneeds also in terms of finishing, this is a promis-ing business".

The feeling is that technology vendors will have todevelop more and more solutions with foreign part-ners, due to the enduring critical situation of ourcountry. How much is it going to cost?

CEFLA FINISHING GROUP ANNOUNCES PROMOTIONS

“A lot. That’s our greatest fear. Not only for finish-ing, because Italy still has strong know-how in ma-chinery and painting materials,” Quattrini says. “We will also have to keep investing big money injoint projects in China or the United States, just tomention two countries, in order to develop solutionsfor the specific requirements of those markets.Let me add that Italy would be second to none ifwe promoted joint initiatives involving big compa-nies not only in sales, but also a much more inte-grated development of product areas: working to-gether could only bring benefits. We might develop common experience startingfrom panels, which must be processed and, veryoften, painted. In this respect, I can tell you that wehave a major partnership with four, five coating pro-ducers. Also in this domain we might develop newideas together. We have to team up in different ar-eas, from chemicals to process, from technologyto machines. We should think about “technology ta-bles” where we all sit down together, but we needstrategic vision and willingness to integrate... andmaybe we are not ready, yet".

OPEN HOUSE

40 XYLON INTERNATIONAL November-December 2014

A large group of highly qualified visitors accepted Routech’sinvitation to attend the open-house event in the Sinalunga headquarters, to discover the news and portfolio of theScm Group brand committed to research and development on working centers.

FROM MACHINERY TO SOFTWARE,

OPEN DOORS AT ROUTECH

The best of technologyfor wood constructions, and much more. Frommachinery to software. This is the key concept ofthe latest open-houseevent at Routech, a ScmGroup company basedin Sinalunga, near Siena. The event was attendedby about one hundred in-dustry professionals, 80percent coming fromabroad, from those inter-national markets that arethe main destinations forRoutech, from Europe to Japan. This is the first curious piece of news, namelythe fact that, in a country where wood con-structions are more than just a business, thesuccess of Routech’s technology is impressive. And the orders are quite significant... But let’sstart from the beginning. Constructions were the key topic of the event, reaffirming the central role of an industry thataccounts for 40 percent of the Tuscan com-pany's revenues.

The open house was also an opportunity to dis-cover the cards that Routech can lay down ontoother tables, i.e. in other industries. Needless tosay, Routech is expanding in constructions, butthe company can offer a wide and diversifiedrange of cnc working centers for applicationsfar beyond wood.We talked about it with Giovanni Tiezzi, tech-

nical manager and son ofRoutech’s founder, LivioTiezzi.

Mr. Tiezzi, what’s the focus ofyour open-house event?

“We put our line of “Oikos”working centers for woodconstructions in the forefront;they were up and running toshow their huge potential toour guests. The event wasalso an opportunity to show-case all other Routech work-ing centers, not only for

woodworking, but also for other materials”.

The evidence is clear: in an industry wherewood has always been processed traditionally, you were the first to introduce numerical con-trol...

“That’s right. We have always been keen onstudying, designing, experimenting, develop-ing a business where special products are therule, the standard. It’s in our Dna, we are an or-ganization that can provide technology in smallseries, testing new aggregates, different solu-tions... We were the first to develop the“Prisma” head, now installed in 80 percent ofScm Group routers, with two non-orthogonal ro-tary axes to turn the tool into any direction inspace. This head provides several benefits: it is com-pact, it brings the tool very close to the C-axis,

providing for a stronger assembly, and it en-sures higher accuracy in positioning.Today we have adopted the same philosophy.Or better, we have applied it more extensively:anywhere we see growth margins, we neverstep back, we seize opportunities. We do whatwe can do better, namely invent ever new ap-plications, solve new problems every day. This approach has driven us to take up thechallenge of new technology applied to woodconstructions, and every day it encourages usto put our expertise to the service of customers, prospects and their needs, whatever the prod-uct they have to make, whatever the material.I'll say it again, we were born to deliver specialsolutions and we love to do it, while facing allsituations with an organized methodology, aswe are now part of a big industrial group”.

How do you create a new machine?

“I must say that a big part of our success andour satisfaction comes from strong customerloyalty. Those who already use one of our ma-chines are likely to come back and ask to solveanother problem”.

Today, Routech seems to be pursuing new di-rections, with a mixed offer for wood and othermaterials...

“The market has driven us to expand our focus, with two application areas that globally repre-sent 70 percent of our revenues. To get there, we started from the skills we hadbeen developing in the past decade in high-tech, especially in five-axis machines. We have

specific know-how inaccurate movementsand solutions for a de-manding industry likeconstructions. We realized that wecould maximize the ex-perience acquired with“5-axis working cen-ters “Oikos”.But after taking the firststeps in the general-purpose domain, wesoon realized that five-axis technology wasonly a part of the chal-lenge. The other partwas process expertise,

which was totally new to us, and software, twostrictly related elements.

So, we had to know what our machines shoulddo, and better understand what it means tomake beams or elements for a timber house. And concurrently, transfer this new know-howinto dedicated software, to release the opera-tor from banal, repetitive, useless operationsand leave routine tasks to a computer. The cre-ation and constant development of the “Quick-link” software was certainly one of the keys tosuccess; with this tool, the operator can easilywork inside programming environments and ex-ecute programs to deliver a specific element, while managing all necessary tools.“Quicklink” provides a common language thatcan be shared with any design software usedby our customers, quickly and effectively trans-

lating their “objects” into machine language”.

Very simply stated, we often feel that machinesare always the same and software makes them“better”...“I cannot say you are wrong. The evolution ofany machine is continuous, strong, accurate. A manufacturer’s success, especially for a bigindustrial group, depends on his capacity tostay one step ahead. Software is definitely thearea were resources and efforts are being in-creasingly focused: the approach to programwriting has changed, and customer expecta-tions have grown exponentially; today they askfor tools to work more efficiently and easily, aseamless transition of information to the ma-chine, and strong diagnostics in case of anom-alies or failures. A new frontier that manycompanies are approaching is predictive main-tenance, that will help anticipate possible is-sues through specific simulation software”.

Let’s go back to “Quicklink” for a while and itsrelevance in wood constructions...

“Sure! The core function of “Quicklink” is not tosimplify the design of a piece to streamline itsproduction, but rather to develop a drawing asthe final result. You design the construction el-ement you need, a roof portion or an element ofa timber house, and then you add all informa-tion about the production of the finished part, including parameters and tools. You start fromthe final target − using a modern, quick, 3D in-terface integrated with powerful simulation tools− and then you add what it takes to produce iton the working center. Not only. “Quicklink” was

designed to fit into a landscape where differ-ent languages from different software vendorscoexisted to produce and machine beams ina Cad environment; all these languages wereprocessed by a consortium and unified into adata sharing standard called “Btl”. This ap-proach − forgive me if I am getting too tech-nical − defines a new level of action, separated from the machine, whose operationis driven by other actors, first of all the manu-facturer. On the one hand, you design and draw; onthe other, you build and process wood.

We have acted on a specific part of theprocess, proposing a software that estab-lishes a quick link between architectural cadand machine, while also adding a set of tech-nological information that defines the selec-tion of the “best possible process”. Amongother things, “Quicklink” features a powerfulgraphical engine, which allows to draw even

And what about the future, Mr. Tiezzi?

“Special production is our Dna, as I said before. Our business model is based on this. For each sale or opportunity, we always get aninsight of customer needs through a few stepsthat help us analyze their needs and require-ments in depth, including those that are not ex-plicit at the beginning, so that we are ready toseize any opportunity also in special produc-tion.”

in mechanical fixing tools, most resistance is generatedby the friction between thematerial to be removed andthe cutting surface. “NaDia”treatment especially focuseson these parameters: its struc-ture allows the user to re-duce the friction coefficientsignificantly, enabling opera-tions with lower ef-forts. This benefit, combined with suit-able cutting edgegeometry, signifi-cantly slows downall common wear processesthat take place with the in-crease of the quantity of ma-terial processed. Everythingtranslates into higher pro-duction efficiency.

“NaDia” coating becomes asort of “protection agent” forall cutting inserts that musthave distinctive elementssuch as high finishing gradeand superior life also up tothree, five times longer thanstandard knives. In order to furtherstreamline the man-agement of toolsand have the op-portunity to directlyorder all originalspare parts with“NaDia” treatment,Zuani has launcheda smartphone ap-plication. A recent development in the“Dlc” field has affected acomplementary product formechanical fixing tools. Theextreme importance andspread of ball-end cutters forsolid wood and compositematerials processing hasdriven Zuani to implement aprocess allowing this productfamily to feature the sameperformance levels obtainedon hard metal knives. Results have showed upsoon and the enthusiasm ofusers has been a furtherconfirmation of the achieve-ment of an important goal. The life of the new tool with“NaDia” coating is 400 per-cent longer. The life with ini-tial coating and sharpening is50 percent longer comparedto the life of an identical tool, sharpened and not coated. In end mill cutters, as well as

THE CHAIR DISTRICT PART ONE

We travelled from Milan to Friuli with a picture in ourmind: weeds growing in the courtyards and on theloading bays of so many furniture factories that have

It was a pleasure to accept the invitation we re-ceived some time ago from Udine. To be honest,we did not understand whether it was an invitationbased on old friendship, on mere chance, or on thedesire of “district people” to take a look at their uni-verse from the outside... We accepted with greatpleasure, because we really wanted to understandwhat the "Chair Triangle" is today. The invitationcame exactly ten years after a similar business tourin 2004, when we tried to guess what was chang-ing, where the industry was going, if there was somemistake or excessiveness carelessness in ap-proaching a situation that was changing deeply.

THE “CHAIR TRIANGLE”LOOKING FOR ITSELF......and probably, it is finding a new way. A journey across one hundred square kilometers, eleven towns that have made the history of chairs in Friuli,Italy, Europe and the world. Meeting people to understand the origins of today’s situation, a touch of nostalgia for a glorious past, but most of all the determination to win the challenges of the future.

closed down in Friuli, Alto Livenza, Brianza. We re-membered the good old times of the “Chair Ex-hibition”, a unique event that brought the entireworld to Udine for a one-product exhibition that wasan overwhelming success for so many years. Wethought about Promosedia, a public institute first, then a special company, and then an organizationopen to businesses and territory, which made pro-motion and promises, with an effective action fora long time, then gradually weakening. So, whathave we found?Adriana Cruciatti – the pr account of Asdi, theagency for the development of the chair district, which has taken up the role of Promosedia, as wewill explain later – involved us in this new journeyacross Friuli and organized an intensive agenda ofmeetings, full of opportunities to quench our curiosity.

LUCIANO SNIDARLuciano Snidar, general manager of Promosediafor fifteen years, from 1993 to 2006, is the most suit-able person to go back through the mists of time, when he was guiding the organization. Probably therichest years, in every sense. But at a certain point,

this brilliant, very active architect realized that hisvision was no longer shared by others. So, he tooka gentle bow and quit. “Those were wonderful years of intensive activityand enthusiasm”, he tells before a glass of Friulanowine, which will always be Tocai to us, in spite ofEuropean standards! “A very interesting period, when you could un-dertake great initiatives, although the evolution ofPromosedia from a “public company” to a privatebusiness-oriented organization had reduced the fi-nancial resources we had in the past. There was so much to do: the world was get-ting bigger every day, markets wanted toknow about made-in-Friuli chairs, busi-ness owners were excited about the op-portunities ahead. My task, our task, was toguide them around the world, supportthem in exhibitions, organize events... wewere a great team”.“Then the world literally exploded in our hands”,Snidar continues. “China boomed, with huge vol-umes at ridiculous prices, and in the district we re-alized that the only way to preserve our leadership, our role, was to build a network, to define a newindustrial model, based on even closer collabo-ration among companies. Unfortunately, smallbusinesses, an individualistic approach and a“handicraft” attitude stopped many of us. Our en-trepreneurs, or most of them, seemed unable to in-teract with the world, to speak the language of glob-alization, Internet, web, new competitors, new ma-terials. So, all our major customers jumped ontocheap products: the price attracted them like an

irresistible siren... It did not take long to realize thatquality was missing, but even then we were not ableto stand up and show that the district was there forthose who sought quality! At the end of that season, only few were still ableto fight and carry on. Basically, they did not un-derstand what was happening, they did not real-ize that it was necessary to think together, to builda network, to diversify production. Some of themdid and created new successful businesses, buttoo many were forced to close down".

“Today the triangle is half the size of those times. What can we do? Anything, if companies acceptto stand together. There is no use in chasing utopiaand regrets, we simply have to understand that thedistrict still has a lot to give”, says our friend LucianoSnidar.

ASDI SEDIAAgency for the Development of the Chair DistrictManzano, (www.asdisedia.com)Carlo Piemonte is a young man in his early thir-ties, and quite surprisingly, everyone speaks high-ly of him. He was engaged to guide the regionalagency for the promotion of the chair district, a chal-lenging task...Between 2008 and 2010, it seemed that the chairdistrict had disappeared. No more news from anarea that had lost its role of driver of an entire in-dustry. Tough years, with hardly 650 companies stillactive out of 1,200 in the previous years and 1,440in the golden age of Promosedia. In the good oldtimes, chairs and components came out from everycellar and garage, but then the rules of the gamesuddenly changed.

“The world is realizing that there are not only Friulior Italian chairs, and they are turning to emergingmarkets: there is an increasing demand for af-

fordable chairs, oftento the detriment ofquality. Entrepreneursfind new businessmodels, pure “pro-ducer” are thrown outof the market",Piemonte says. “In2011 Asdi Sediastepped up one gear:we pushed on the ac-celerator of Pfc, Fscand Iso certifications

(they will be about ninety by next January, editor’snote) and companies began to improve their results,as evidence that you can find opportunities if youhave the strength to innovate. Producing is notenough, you have to make business. Within a shorttime, district figures improved. It was not as big asin the past, but definitely better. Relationships withdesign got even tighter, production quality improvedfurther. Companies attended exhibitions all aroundthe world with a unified catalog. The agency was managed as a business, not a con-sortium or an association, but actually an organi-zation designed to provide services, deliver ini-tiatives for its member companies, for anyone whowant to be an associate, an active part, a driver, not just a “subscriber”. It was a momentouschange, an involving approach that radicallychanged the terms of collaboration: we teamed up,we worked together, we looked for a common vi-sion, knowing that we would be recognized world-wide under the flag “Italian Chair District”, a brandthat has acquired greater and greater valuethrough the commitment of member companies. In 2013 we went together to Cologne, Brussels, Jed-dah; we setup up a crowded showroom in CapeTown, South Africa, the design capital of 2014. Thisyear we started from Stockholm, then we moved on

to the Saloni in Milan, Medinit in Casablanca, andalso Saudi Arabia. At the London Design Week welaunched a new 2014/2015 catalog, presenting theportfolio of 42 brands of the chair industry...And so much work has brought results: today weare seen as an aggregation laboratory, we managertwo business networks, we have three multi-site cer-tifications, we are implementing 3D design in ourcompanies... all very tangible initiatives, becausewe are a stock company, not a public institution. We have decided to work in three directions, asmentioned: territory development, certificationand globalization. We have supported professionaleducation in the territory, organizing courses, guid-ed tours to companies, seminars about design andengineering, supporting and collaborating with lo-cal schools. We have also addressed the media, with more than one thousand publications in localand national media in three years, plus interviewsin the Italian and international press. We have pro-moted all possible aggregation opportunities in theterritory, supporting the importance of “staying to-gether”. An example is the big armchair forPope Benedict XVI, produced by 47 companieswhich did not even know one another and beganto interact; or the "Italian Workshop Design”, an

event for designers interested in getting in closetouch with our companies. We launched really many initiatives: the collabo-ration with Fabrica, Benetton Group, driving us tothe limit of our know-how, the creation of a unifiedcatalog for all district companies exhibiting at theSaloni in Milan, corporate certifications (from col-lective “multi-site” certifications to individual cer-tification for each company), and our website, fea-turing over 300 registered companies which de-cided to participate”.

“Today the district exceeds 450 million Euro revenues,of which 170 from the member companies of AsdiSedia. We have 5,500 employees approximately, anexport share of 75 percent, mainly to Europe, NorthAmerica, the Middle East and Russia.Wood is still a symbol. The old chair from Friuli, called“Marocca”, no longer! We are working to preservethe skills to process this wonderful material, to pro-vide training experiences so that, in twenty years, there will still be people who can process wood.Wood is a value for our companies, even if we haveto fight against countries rich in raw material”.

AT VILLA NACHINI CABASSI…Corno di Rosazzo. Villa Nachini Cabassi is a littlejewel, recently renovated by the municipality to of-fer a showcase for the area, a space where the “lo-cal genius” can stand out and project itself into theworld. There is a winery to taste and buy wines fromthe producers of this area of the eastern hills of Friuli;a tourist information office; a restaurant that com-bines different regions, stories and traditions;rooms for exhibitions and events, to promote a cul-ture that was born from the meeting of different pop-ulations. And chairs of course, as this is one of thethree capitals of the Triangle, together with Manzanoand San Giovanni al Natisone. A “temporaryshow room” at the entrance, created by Asdi topromote companies and their products, displaysthe chairs of five manufacturers. It’s an “rotating”exhibition, where exhibits change every three-fourmonths... The restaurant chairs are also "sponsored”by companies that support the project, again witha periodical rotation.

“Asdi, the agency for the development of the chairdistrict, is a sort of miracle”, Maurig says. “Just thinkthat we have brought the Chamber of Commerceand the Province of Udine, eleven municipalities, five banks, all business, handicraft and retail as-sociations, the trade union, Catas, Ipsia Mattioni, regional institutions, the Udine Gorizia exhibition allaround the same table… It’s a vast world, with dif-

ferent stories and needs, but sharing the same de-sire to do all they can to manage a huge heritage, namely the Friuli chair. We are working together, ef-fectively, achieving tangible results for companies. We love this region, we know that chairs, just likevineyards, are an asset that helps our communitylook into the future with optimism. There is passion,a story combined with strong technical, design andbusiness skills".

You can feel it. You clearly feel that we are work-ing for something that is above everything andeveryone. A call, a sort of vocation, a roundtablefor bold knights? Quite the contrary: a clear, sharp, accurate vision that this corner of Italy hasexcellence to communicate, to stress, to support,to combine, so that they can spread the wings andfly around the world.

“Our territory must be promoted as a whole, in allits expressions”, Loris Basso says. And if he saysso, we have to believe it, because his perseverance, his strong faith in doing things together has turnedVilla Nachini Cabassi into a location for several ini-tiatives and events; the villa was renovated duringBasso's term using regional funds. “I was the mayor of Corno di Rosazzo and I havealways supported this vision: chair, food andwine, tourism. It was not easy to merge these as-sets into one coordinated plan, but we did it, andthe renovation of this palace − which is turning intothe beating heart of a global system, of this part ofFriuli and its expressions − shows how far you cango if you share goals and methods. Here, we pro-mote the culture of the territory, which also meansbusiness culture. We talk about certification, mar-keting, promotion, business culture...".

“And continuous train-ing – adds president Mau-rig – because this crisishas lifted the bar: we mustproduce better, distributebetter, organize better, communicate better, sellbetter, give a better serv-ice. And to do this, youneed expertise, skills thatmust be constantly adapt-ed to an ever-changingworld”. Blessed words...

MONTBELManzano (www.montbel.it)“95 percent abroad, in Europe,North Africa, the United States,Russia, the Middle East…; 95 per-cent contract, a turnkey servicefor the interior decorations ofships, hotels and restaurants”. Weare quickly overwhelmed by theenthusiasm and passion ofManuela Montina, president ofthe family-run company, whoforces us to speed up our paceas we follow her through show-rooms and production depart-ments. Montbel currently em-ploys fifty people in the Manzanoand San Giovanni al Natisone fac-tories. Revenues are close to 7million Euros, with double-digitgrowth rates. Most models are “upholstered onshaft”, so a primary role is playedby interior upholstery, total qual-ity control from wood piece tofinished chair. This quality, com-bined with suitable design, placesthe company at the high end ofthe market, for chairs, armchairs, furniture complements and −why not − even some sofas.

“In the past we have many external suppliers, butthe crisis forced many small and micro companiesin the district to close down; as a result, in 2007 wedecide to verticalize our production cycle, takingfull control of each phase in terms of quality and

work organization. We invested a lot, our revenuesincreased, the company is doing quite well", saysManuela Montina with a touch of pride. And sheadds: “... we can furnish a 100-room hotel in threeweeks, because “service” is our keyword, whichmeans that − for instance − we have some 15 thou-

sand raw shafts in our stock, ready to be finished, padded and lined with the fabric selected by thecustomer, and delivered in just fifteen days!”.The secret is easily revealed: investments in tech-nology, mainly numerical control working centers, and highly trained staff. “In the upholstery de-partments – Montina says – everything is done byhand: it’s as if we sew a dress onto a model. Wemake no standard product, it’s all custom”.

Montbel was founded in 1959: for forty years theyproduced for others, until they decided to createtheir own collection. “It’s terrible to be subcon-tractors, you are often exploited. I don’t mean ourcompany only, but the entire Triangle, which wasa victim in the past, and now is an exploiter. We de-cided to rebel and in few years we have turned intoa different company: new products, new mindset, new customers, new markets. It wasn't easy to workwith the end customer in mind. The hotel industryhas quickly become a key destination and I mustsay this strategy has been rewarded. We keep developing new ideas that make up a veryrich catalog, with a huge range of products, tastesand models to meet the needs of all kinds of en-vironments”.

The showroom is impressive. There are tens andtens of pieces, all different from one another, all prop-erly displayed in an accurate setting to give a clearvision of the final atmosphere. Such repertoire is onlypossible with perfect organization, also in pro-duction. A factory that boasts exceptional pro-duction capacity, suitable to face a market thatbrings more orders than it currently does. A col-lection where wood is always in the forefront, “...be-cause I strongly believe – Manuela Montina con-tinues – that you can do a lot with metal, plasticsand composites, but only wood offers a beauty thatremains unchanged over time. Wood is not a fash-ion trend, it’s a way of living and will never fadeaway, although we must pay attention to everythingaround us”.

“Today it's all more difficult. District companies, ifthey want to survive, must make excellent productsand offer good service, even more if you think thatdemand has fallen from thousands of pieces totwenty, fifty, sometimes a hundred chairs... but evenfor such small orders, customers must be listenedto, satisfied, cared after.“Made in Italy” is still a strong value, a jolly card wehave to play without making mistakes, an excellentbusiness card, a strong warranty. Unfortunately, there are fake products, companies who copy ourcreativity or produce in Eastern Europe, and theydo not refrain from using the made-in-Italy brand,it’s disloyal competition, intolerable abuse. For many of us, “made in Friuli” is still a value, butcertainly not as effective and recognized aroundthe world as “made in Italy”: let’s take this oppor-tunity and we won’t regret...”.

FRAGPradamano (www.frag.it)Frag has a long story. It began in 1921, when Gio-vanni Modonutti, a leather worker, decide to start hisown business. He worked leather, bought it and soldit. He founded the “Casa del cuoio” first, then“Sedilcuoio”, a still active brand in the district, whichsupplies all or most Manzano-based chair makers. The Frag brand was born twenty-five years ago, ex-pressing the desire of the family − not at the third gen-eration − to address the final customer. They stillworked as subcontractors, but only for "big names",delivering processed leather to high-end companies. Not only in the district, not only in Italy.Frag offers its own catalog around the world, from theUnited States to Japan, very elegant and high-qual-ity products. Chairs, armchairs, tables, complements, where leather is the distinctive element, to line, wrapup and enhance shapes and functions. Style andclass find fertile ground in residential and contract,

whereby the latter keeps growing “…because thereis a need and desire to have good quality furniture, but most of all pieces with an identity, created by well-known designers with a story and a professional rep-utation”, explains Franco Di Fonzo, the husband ofGiovanna Modonutti, the founder’s grand-daughter,in charge of the artistic direction of Frag. “We have been collaborating for a long time withyoung designers, as well as big names of con-temporary design, such as Ferruccio Laviani,Christophe Pillet or Nigel Coates, just to mention thefirst names to come to my mind. I must say we real-ized many years ago how important it was to be awell-known, successful company, to have all it takesfor famous designers to come and submit their proj-ects to us. Let me tell you that such partnerships in-dicate a mature organization that can express qual-ity and "production creativity", as essential conditionsto generate new ideas and turn them into productsto be used.Every year, we select four or five pieces that matchthe present status and mission of Frag; we know theywill never be produced in big volumes, but they be-come a symbol of our work, of our vision, or alter-natively, more "reassuring" pieces, if you allow this def-inition, products that immediately meet the taste ofour customers. This philosophy has rewarded us,since 2009 we have been growing at double-digitrates, making clear decisions, working consistently, addressing a quality-focused market, keen onleather quality, that appreciates the manic attentionwe pay to every tiny detail, even in the most hiddenstitching point... this is Frag”.

Thirty-five employees, 7 million Euro revenues, 98 per-cent from export to Europe, the United States, the Mid-dle and Far East. Each product is fire-branded: Fragand “made in Italy”, a successful combination aris-ing from a factory that looks like an atelier, a placewhere each worker hardly does the same thing forlong: shapes, leather tones change over and over.

“Our “made in Italy” is still strong”, Di Fonzo says. “Wemake the most beautiful things in the world, but wemust be able to communicate, to highlight their val-ue, to show that each product has a father, a designerwho imagined and design it, and a company thatmanufactured it.I repeat: we have an identity and we address a spe-cific market segment. You can find our brand in themost beautiful furniture stores around the world, in bighotels, in famous restaurants, on the Carnival shipssailing to the Caribbean, and for a few years not, onthe Costa Crociere cruisers”.

When you visit Frag, you realize that leather has nolimits, that quality leather processed by skillfulhands can improve any structure with excellent tech-nical features, concealing top performance under ab-solute elegance. This family-run company – with DiFonzo and his wide Giovanna as artistic director, theirson Michele is in charge for product development andtheir daughter Federica for marketing – has been ableto re-launch an ancient story.Franco di Fonzo is also the president of the WoodGroup of Confindustria Udine, so a precious wit-

ness of what has happened and is happening in the“Triangle”.

“I joined Promosedia twenty-five years ago”, he says.“We had an incredible activity, we attended all ex-hibitions around the world with collective pavilions toopen up new markets that made our fortune. We learntto know and respect one another. But then thingschanged little by little. The markets became tougher, the crisis started to bite and the system began tocrumble. With Catas support, we created a districtbrand that certified the origin and quality of our prod-uct, but we were not able to involve many compa-nies. Quite a few did not realize that the world hadchanged. I believe that the only way to preserve ourleadership is to build a network of businesses. That’swhy I got involved in the Wood Group, which includesbig names like Fantoni, Calligaris and Snaidero, aswell as many small and medium businesses. We mustwork together if we want to be successful on the glob-al market, we have to find a way − together − to com-municate, to set up temporary stores, to organizeevent, to test new logistic approaches.Talking about exhibitions, I admit we are missing theChair exhibition, which was an opportunity for theterritory to emerge, bringing industry people and me-dia from all over the world to Udine. It was a strongdriver for all of us. But we must not be mistaken, thatchapter is not closed. From that experience, the Ital-ian Chair District and Asdi Sedia were born, and westill have a lot to say!”.

The Friuli chair is alive and has a lot of energy to de-ploy. Di Fonzo’s words clearly show that there is a newdirection to take. “In the past decades, the Friuli chairwas the expression of a thousand companies. Manyof them have disappeared, as they could not han-dle change. Those who looked around, changed theirrole from producer to entrepreneurs and understoodthat a chair is also a piece of design have surviveda very difficult economic period. Those who stuck toproduction only had no space. In Bosnia or Croat-ia, not to mention China, they make chairs at half theprice. If we focus on design, on quality, on “made inItaly”, on “standing together”, we will always have achair district that many would crave....”.

EXHIBITIONS

Time runs fast,alas...and we have seen the end ofthe sixth edition of Sicam, the international exhibitionof components, accessories and semifinishedmaterials for the furniture industry, held last Octo-ber 14 to 17 at the Pordenone fair.Since the earliest hours, the event gave the im-pression that it had been long awaited: through fourdays we have seen more than satisfactory atten-dance, a consistent flow of visitors, without the“sags” we had noticed in previous years during theafternoon. An attracting show, with many operators among thestands and many exhibitors, the “usual” exhibitionwe are familiar with, with excellent installations anda large, diversified delegation of representativesfrom the world of semifinished materials and sup-plies, always complemented by high-end servic-es. Lots of people in the halls, from 1 to 8, with hall9 virtually entirely dedicated to catering. Basical-ly, Sicam covered the same surface as usual, or bet-ter: this year there was a slight increase in area (120square meters more than in 2013, if we got it clear).Forget the crisis!

An attracting fair, we said. This was due to sever-al elements, last but not least the fact that there isno “weak hall”: from the first to the last step youtake, you meet companies and products worth see-ing and knowing, famous brands alternating withother actors, creating a "constantly stimulating" vis-iting route.

FIGURESSo, everything fine and a positive impression, sup-ported by the figures given by organizers: a bit lessthan 500 exhibitors, 498 to be precise, came to Por-denone from 33 countries to meet over 17 thousandvisitors, with a 35 percent share of foreign oper-ators, approximately six thousand people from 95countries, an international share that keeps grow-ing year after year.

“Based on registrations at the desks and ex-hibitor interviews, all the big names of the furnitureindustry attended Sicam 2014”, said Carlo Giob-bi, the patron of the show. “If necessary, this fig-ure proves that Sicam is an essential exhibition to

SICAM, THEY DID IT AGAIN

Sicam is definitely an exhibition that keeps drawing attention and success, almost untouched by the widespread crisis that is hitting the wood-furniture industry.

cover the Italian market and one of the most im-portant for the global furniture industry”.

Giobbi's statement is supported by visitor figures. On one side, once again, most visitors came fromGermany, but on the other there was strong andgrowing interest from Russia, with over 400 peo-ple, about 7 percent of total attendance, plus onethousand operators from Central and Eastern Eu-rope, especially Poland, Serbia and Ukraine. An-other interesting figure is 23 percent of visitors fromAsia, who really deserve a special mention for hav-ing reached Pordenone, actually not one of the mostconvenient places in the world.Significant increases also from Northern Africa(Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco), “encour-aged” by the joint promotion of Sicam and the Ital-ian Ministry of Economic Development, whichsupported operators from those countries who want-ed to attend the sixth edition. “A sign not only of thecareful evaluation performed but also of the op-portunities that these emerging markets representfor the components and accessories sectors thatare present at Sicam fair”, reads the final press re-lease distributed by organizers.

After all, Sicam’s attractiveness is out of question. As Giobbi himself commented, “...Every year, in-novations in design and materials are presented atthe fair, because the components and accessoriessectors are ever-changing and live on generatinginnovation at a fast pace: the entire global furnituresector benefits from this, in particular the future prod-uct lines to be presented at the spring edition of theexhibition. Each country, with its industries, isable to find in the fair those ideas and solutions thatwill allow it to emerge into the international arenaenhancing the prerogatives of its own market”.

Another interesting information about visitors is thenumber of “highly specialized” visitors attendingthe fair according to organizers.

The reference audience remains that of the deci-sion-makers in the company: “...the project man-ager who chooses which components to employ(representing 9% of the total), the top manager orhead of the technical dept. (22%) or even the ac-tual Ceo of the company (the person who attendsthe most, amounting to 30% of the registrations). Industrial manufacturing companies (44%) are those

most present at the fair: but also 20 percent of theregistrations related to the handicraft industry is alsosignificant”.

There is another element we would like to highlight.Carlo Giobbi had announced the intention tocount companies instead of “heads”. Let's explain: is it more valuable knowing that anevent was attended by 100 people or 100 com-panies, 100 prospects? And don't forget that, in thegood old days, some companies brought bussesfull of employees to visit exhibitions, a sort of rewardcombined with direct involvement. Today, it isdefinitely more useful − we agree with Giobbi − toknow how many “customer companies” havecome to the show and how many of these each ex-hibitor has hosted in his stand, rather than a num-ber of people walking in the aisles, which isdoubtfully significant in terms of real business.

So, Sicam still mentioned the number of visitors inpost-event communications, but they added the an-nounced figure. Open your ears: 6,500 companiesattended Sicam 2014, with 2.5 average visits percompany. The bus trip times are over, alas or atlast...

Now the attention of organizers is already focusedon the 2015 edition, scheduled in Pordenone fromTuesday 13 to Friday 16 October. In the next twelvemonths, Giobbi and his team will show theirproverbial dedication to promote the exhibition allover the world. As far as we were told, Sicam will be present intwenty trade fairs around the world, includingIran, India, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Indonesia. Attention is already focused on various emergingcountries, where an increase in participation is ex-pected, as well as on countries that are tradition-ally “friends”, a ref-erence point for thebusiness relation-ships of many ofthe exhibitors. Ger-many first. (l.r.) ■

PANELS

The panel industry is achieving the first results inthe fierce battle against the use of wood biomassfor energy production. In recent years, this trendhas jeopardized the entire industry, reducing theavailability of wood as primary and secondary rawmaterial. The current status and future outlook of“made in Italy” panel producers was illustrated byPaolo Fantoni, president of Assopannelli/Feder-legnoArredo, at the latest Sicam in Pordenone. Thestarting point was the campaign “Let’s not burnmade in Italy”, a European initiative in collabora-tion with Epf-European Panel Federation, sup-ported by Assopannelli and four major Italiancompanies: Fantoni, Group Frati, Saib and GroupMauro Saviola.

The worries for Italian and European panels are notdecreasing, but there are clear possibilities that re-covery might spread from Italy to the entire West-ern Europe. In the past three years, European in-stitutions – above all Eesc-European Economic andSocial Committee – have acknowledge the difficultsituation of the industry, between loss of compet-itiveness and employment, and offshoring to mar-kets with better conditions in terms of energy costsand raw material availability; as a result, a new ap-proach has been adopted. Such acknowledgmentis supported by hard figures: as reported during theEesc meeting last September, between 2008 and2013 the European panel industry lost 10.3 millioncubic meters of production capacity, out of 55 mil-lion in total, and 51 plants closed down, includingsome factories that were offshored outside the EU.

Italian figures clearly depict the problem of low rawmaterial availability. Italy is the largest log importer in Europe, the world’ssixth importer of wood and the second in Europe, the world’s fourth importer of chipped wood and theworld’s number one consumer of pellets, with 3.3million tons in 2013 compared to a national pro-

duction of just 350 thousand tons. Italy is also thelargest firewood importer worldwide (16 million tonconsumption in 2013). In this scenario, the panelindustry is going through a tough period, especiallyfor particleboard. As Paolo Fantoni mentioned, in the first semester2014, the lack of raw material in this industry forcedmany European and Italian manufacturers to stopproduction for five weeks on average, while low pro-ductivity had a serious impact on the furniture in-dustry. This resulted into an increase of import inthe first half 2014, up by 51 percent for a total of506 thousand cubic meters, with annual esti-mates close to one million cubic meters and foreignproduction covering approximately 33 percent ofdomestic consumption.

Looking at figures, Fantoni said, the situation isevolving. “Panel production is moving towards East-ern Europe, while operations in the West are de-creasing. It is also clear that the decision to sup-port the use of wood as fuel is affecting employ-ment in Italy. The generation of added value for firedwood is ten times lower than the value we wouldgenerate if we kept the same quantity of raw ma-terial within the supply chain".

POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR PANELSEuropean and national institutions acknowledge the tough periodfor the panel industry, involved in an unfair fight against the use of wood for energy generation and the enduring (in Italy) lack of raw material. The current status was illustrated at Sicam by Assopannelli.

The actions of European institutions, guided by Epfand the national associations (including As-sopannelli/FederlegnoArredo), are yielding ear-ly results, with public institutions from Brussels tothe Italian Parliament that are listening to the re-quests of the wood industry. Fantoni continued: “Weare talking with the Italian MP Ermete Realacci topromote a law that introduces favorable actions forour industry, changing priorities to support the useof raw material within the wood and panel supplychain”.Meanwhile, in Germany, the new regulation aboutrenewable energy and modifications to the currentregulations of the energy sector, enacted last Au-gust 1st, has cancelled all subsidies to the use ofwood for energy production. During the meeting inMestre, Venice, last September 1, 2014, the Euro-pean Economic and Social Committee, following theacknowledgment of “low” raw material availability, submitted new guidelines to the EU Commission, urging member countries to eliminate subsidies towood combustion and recommending the defini-tion of practices to support the “cascade” use ofraw material. In Italy, Assopannelli has laid specificoperating strategies on the table, some of which areready to be implemented.

The first one is the doubling of poplar-cultivatedareas, from current 55 to 110 thousand hectaresby 2020, based on an inter-regional agreement onpoplar cultivation signed last January 29 in Venice, the drafting of Pac and Psr plans at regional lev-el, the financial contributions for greening actions, and a 30 percent increase of subsidies. The res-olution, approved by the Agriculture Commissionof the Italian Parliament last September 10, bindsthe Government to double poplar-cultivated areasbased on the agreement signed by five regions inNorthern Italy, namely, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lom-bardy, Piedmont, Veneto and Emilia Romagna.

The second strategy is the definition of a new in-ter-regional agreement for wood distributionacross the Alps, aimed at doubling harvesting vol-umes from 20 to 40 percent of annual growth, com-bined with a renovation of forestry. Third, the elim-ination of distortions in raw material trade, by can-celling subsidies to wood combustion for energyproduction and promoting good practices for thecascade use of wood, as recommended in theDresden resolution of 2011.

PANELS

As usual, their booth was a strong attraction, it dis-played panels not only for what they are, but alsofor what they might become once they are trans-formed, machined, assembled. A trendy “urban” and metropolitan look to conveythe top performance of a product addressed to in-terior design. This was the presentation of GGroupFrati from Pomponesco (Mantova) at this year’sSicam in Pordenone. A leading producer of parti-cleboard, mdf (raw and laminated), with a "Tailor-ing Division" that manufactures product lines andcustom decors for design and interior decorations,Frati has re-launched its peculiar offer betweenmodernity and tradition, but most of all they havereaffirmed their concept: high technology must notdetract from the trendy beauty of a finished prod-uct, this is a must to be competitive in a complexscenario. Not only: sophisticated beauty and high-quality tech-nology in the service of design are the “weapons”available to urge the commitment of public insti-tutions to safeguard the panel industry. Hence thedecision to join the initiative ““Let's not burn madein Italy”, promoted last October in Rome by As-sopannelli/FederlegnoArredo within the frame-work of “Wood Action Days” by Epf (European Pan-el Federation), as reported on page 70. This initiativeunited the voice of panel manufacturers to highlightthe benefits of reusing recycled wood rather than

burning it as fuel. Plus two hours of production stop.At Sicam we met LLuisa Frati, the “soul” of the group. It was an opportunity to know where we stand andwhere the panel industry is going. Starting fromSicam, of course...

“As done in previous editions, we have come toSicam with an innovative approach. For us, ppanels are a strongly industrial product, sup-ported by remarkable know-how resulting from oursolid longstanding experience. This product re-quires significant investments linked to raw mate-rial, its cleaning during process and all the stagesthat lead from wood pieces and chips to high-qual-ity panels. But it is still true that we have to definea product that is beautiful as well as technicallyvalid. We cannot forget that customers buy what

FRATI GROUP: NICE AND FEASIBLE

There is no beauty without technological quality, and vice versa. This is the basic concept of panel production by Frati Group, among the big actors at the latest Sicam in Pordenone.

they see, and a nice aspect is very often essential”.

For a long time and more than others, you havebeen presenting your panels with this added val-ue, you make them more attractive, nicer to see...“One thing is for sure: we present them in a differentway. After all, each manufacturer has its own dna,and at Frati, we have always been keen on the vi-sual aspect. We believe in it and probably itcouldn’t be otherwise, because this reflects the ap-proach and sensitivity of our sales management, where women have a significant share. Our phi-losophy is selling a beautiful and applicable prod-uct, offering all the necessary “technical assets”.The surface, color and decoration is selected bythe final customer, by the housewife. We should notforget we are seeing a strong development of de-mand in several markets, especially abroad and inthe ccontract business, namely stores, hotels, offices, public venues, restaurants. Architects, designersand the likes are looking for solutions to coordinatefurniture and environments, to build a specificscheme. Our duty is to respond to such demand,to stimulate fantasy. That's why our stand at Sicam2014 features an ““Urban Style”, an established trendon a global scale, though still less popular in Italy, that re-launches our role as consultants and sup-pliers of versatile products.Contract and design arebringing good satisfaction, we are collecting the fruitswe have sown in recent years. Our customerscome to us to analyze their projects together and seehow we can collaborate, which solutions and ma-terials we can provide to solve an environment, a col-lection, a project”.

Mrs. Frati, are you considering finished products, maybe?“Our business strategy does not envisage ffinishedproducts, because we respect the independence

of our customers. Unlike others, we have decidednot to produce semifinished materials, but to offerinputs, signals, hints...”

You are among the companies that supported thecampaign “Let's not burn made in Italy”...“As this is a national initiative, we should all standtogether to save the industry and ourselves. Thefirst who should be grateful for this initiative are ourcustomers, they should understand the effort weare deploying to guarantee the future of our pro-duction and their work”.

The Italy of panels is fighting against strong foreigncompetition, very fierce...“We must say that there are much bigger panel man-ufacturers than we are. I can tell you that, ever sinceFrati was born, we had to face groups that had beenin business for a long time. Although the Italian pan-el industry has relatively recent origins, we have beenable to grow exponentially, let me tell you”.

In this scenario, what can be the future, the “mis-sion” of Italian panels?“I think that melamine-faced particleboard and mdfare the pproducts of the future. If we want to avoiddestroying forests recklessly and offer consistentperformance, products and quality to customers,we have to offer a repeatable industrial product, combined with maximum surface and intrinsic qual-ity. This is what it really means to be an “industry”,it’s an all-round role for us, as we are the promot-ers of a specific standard and we have the capacityto offer more and more. All over the world, IItalianswill always be in the forefront, as usual...”.

SCENARIOS

Let's come to Italy where, under the pressure of stag-nation in the construction in-dustry, parquet consumptionremains very low, with a sharpdecline of sales by an esti-mated 20 percent. For infor-mation, consider that also ce-ramics are losing an estimat-ed 15 percent.

The parquet market in theNetherlands is still charac-terized by an important over-capacity in production (facil-ities). The contraction of re-cent years did not affect theproduction capacity. Produc-ers are looking for export op-portunities, facing a constantdecline of domestic con-sumption, though at a slowerpace than expected.

Belgium, Denmark, Norway,Spain and Switzerland. Thelatter, in the first ten months of

political situation that in-evitably impacts its generaleconomic trend, currentlyvery critical.

In France, the market saw adecline by 10 to 12 percentin the first nine months of2014, and the trend forecastis negative as well. The confidence of end con-sumers across the Alps isquite low and they haveadopted a “wait and see” at-titude.

Germany is pulling on thebrake as well. After the pos-itive development of the firsthalf 2014, the European lo-comotive was slowed downby recession in June, en-during through the followingmonths, that caused a de-cline in parquet sales esti-mated at 1-2 percent in thefirst eight months of the year.

2014, recorded a flat trend, both for mosaic and 3-stripproducts. Notice thatSwitzerland is a countrywhere Diy (Do-it-yourself)has a significant marketshare, around 10 percent, with good growth rates forLvt (Luxury vinyl tiles).

The arrow points up only inSweden, where the parquetmarket grew by three per-cent in the first nine monthsof 2014, driven by the pos-itive trend of constructions, especially one-family hous-es. ■

In the first nine months of2014, the picture of the Eu-ropean wood flooring marketmirrors the slow trend, not tosay recessive, of the OldContinent. That’s the scenario present-ed by Fep, the EuropeanFederation of the ParquetIndustry, in the quarterly re-port: parquet production andsales in Europe reflect aleopard-skin economic situ-ation, with few happy spotsemerging from the compar-ison of twelve Eu countries.

According to Fep analysis, the parquet market in Austriain the period under scrutinylost an estimated 3 percentcompared to the same peri-od of the previous year. AlsoFinland declined (by 5 to 7percent), due to strong de-pendence on Russia, whichis experiencing a very difficult

dience of 60 thousand visitorsfrom abroad.Three key topics will be cov-ered at the next edition: in-telligent urbanization, build-ings and users, energy andresource efficiency.Around two-thirds of theworld’s population will be con-centrated in urban areas bythe year 2025. This challengecan only be met through an in-tegrated approach betweenurban planning, architectureand building technology andsystems. In this area, visitorswill be able to get a vision ofthe progress towards the cityof the future, and current op-portunities offered by designand technology. People in Central Europespend over 80 percent of

wood plays an increasingrole, has long recognizedBau as an innovation driver. All Bau shows from 2005have recorded a “full house”and also at the upcomingevent, exhibition space de-mand largely exceeds theavailable 180 thousandsquare meters, with a waitinglist that includes over 400companies. In 2013, the exhibition set anew record with 2,060 ex-hibitors, 572 of them fromabroad, equal to 27 percentof total exhibitors, comingfrom 41 countries. Figureswere very positive also on thevisitor side. In 2013 therewas no record only becauseof bad weather, but still theexhibition exceeded an au-

their time in offices or otherinterior spaces. If condi-tions in these spaces areideal, they have a positiveimpact on working per-formance. An area will be dedicated totechnology solutions to im-prove buildings and interi-ors, from innovative ventila-tion systems to integratedcontrol, monitoring and op-timization systems.

The use of energy and re-sources is one of the biggestchallenges ahead. The con-struction industry as awhole can significantly con-tribute to the use of sus-tainable materials, inno-vative technology to recyclematerials, and intelligentsoftware to design energy-saving buildings. The development of new, in-tegrated facade conceptsand efficient energy supplymodels for individual build-ings, even entire urban ar-eas, are logical and neces-sary steps on the road to thefuture of small and big cities.

Special shows and forumsabout constructions, eco-design and sustainablearchitecture will round offthe exhibition offer during alldays. ■

Despite the continuing of uncertainconditions in the world economy, theeconomic growth in Malaysia in thefirst half of 2014, mainly driven by ex-ports and domestic demand, has ex-ceeded the best expectations reach-ing the plus 6.3 percent. The World Bank estimates that thisindicator can slow its growth in thelast few months of the year and evenmore in 2015, remaining well above5 percent. Private consumption, one of themain protagonists of growth, are ex-pected to decrease by 6.7 percentin 2014 to 5.7 percent in 2015, dueto the increase in inflation assumingthat by the end of 2014 goes from3.3 percent to 4 percent and reach-ing in 2015 4.5-5 percent due to the10 percent increase of fuel cost dueto the progressive reduction of Statesubsidies. In April 2015 is planned the intro-duction of a new Gst tax (Goods &services tax) of 6 percent. The restrictive monetary measuresin implementation should allow a re-duction of the public debt, amongthe highest in Asia, from 52.8 percentof Gdp in 2014 to 51.2 percent in2015 and the fiscal deficit from 3.9percent of Gdp in 2013, to 3.5 per-cent in 2014 and 3 percent in 2015. Unemployment is decreasing from3.1 to 2.8 percent in the secondquarter of 2014 and the averagemonthly income of households in-creased by 7.7 percent in 2009-2012and 6.6 percent in 2013, reachingin 2014 a monthly average of about5,000 Ringgit (1,200 euros), whichargues in favor of the commitmentof this government to transform thecountry into an economy with highincome by 2020. ■
