PORTSMOUTH | Get set for a complete-ly different sort of craft fair.

Crafts on the Banke, will bring toPortsmouth some of the most creative andtalented artisans, craftsmen, and artists fromacross America. No ordinary "crafts fair," thisevent will showcase fine handcrafted furni-ture, folk art (both traditional and "funky"),and distinctive objects for the. Additionally,the event will feature dozens of traditionalcraftsmen demonstrating their art in the styleof the 18th, 19th, and 20th.

The show will take place rain or shine Fri-day and Saturday, August 18 & 19 (10 a.m. to5 p.m.) under the "big top" on Puddle Dock.Live music will add to the festive atmos-phere, and Muddy River Marketplace ofEliot, Maine, will offer food and beverage forpurchase.

The show is being organized by MarilynGould, who is executive director of theWilton Historical Society and Heritage Muse-um in Wilton, CT, but also the manager ofsome of the best-known crafts and antiquesshows in the East. Her longest-running eventfeaturing fine craftsmanship is the acclaimed"Celebration of American Craftsmanship,"held in November in Wilton each year.

Noteable exhibitors include CoastalHome Originals of Rye, NH with their Hand-painted furniture, nautical designs; Betsey-Ann Golon, Common Folk Farm of Naples,ME with their Herbal products; Denise Coxof New Milford, CT with her Jewelry, handknotted, hand picked gems and many othercrafters who will be demonstrating or sellingtheir goods.

HAMPTON BEACH |Simon, Randy and Paulawon’t be there, but the idols— the Hampton Beach Idols— will be there, showcasingtheir talent for a secondyear of sensational singing.

The Hampton Beach IdolCompetition, presented bythe Hampton Beach VillageDistrict, hits the SeashellStage beginning on Friday,Aug. 25. The singing contin-ues on Aug. 26 and con-cludes with a grand finaleon Sunday, Aug. 27.

John Kane, commission-er of the Hampton BeachVillage District, says lastyear’s competition drewthousands of beachgoers.

“It was packed,” he says.“You could not put anotherperson [in the seating area]at the stage. People lined upon the streets and the side-walk.”

Kane says the HamptonBeach Village Districtdecided to begin the Hamp-ton Beach Idol competitionafter the beach’s annual tal-

ent show was discontinuedbecause of organizationalissues. When the talentshow was cancelled, Kanesays, residents and repeatvisitors were disappointed.

“So we revised [the tal-ent show] and we jumpedon the popularity of‘[American] Idol’ and [tele-vised] talent contests. Ourcompetition has a similarformat,” Kane says.

Kane explains that thecompetition will have twodivisions — juniors (under18 years old) and seniors(over 18 years old). Twodozen junior semi-finalistswill compete on Fridaywhile 24 seniors semi-final-ists will duke it out on Sat-urday. All finalists will meeton the Seashell Stage onSunday. Top finishers willtake home cash prizes.

Though it only lastedtwo days last year, Kanesays the first HamptonBeach Idol was so well-received, organizers decid-ed to extend this year’scompetition in order toaccommodate more semi-

Idol fans will be happyto hear that the competitionwill be heated this year.Kane says between 80 and90 audition tapes have beenreceived and reviewed by agroup committee.

“We weed out [the dif-ferent entries] and try to gettalent pretty high right atthe start,” says Kane.

Though competition willbe tough, Kane says view-ers shouldn’t expect toencounter the brutal SimonCowell-like criticisms thathave driven countlessAmerican Idols to tears onnational television.

“We’re very nice [aboutjudging],” says Kane. “This

is a family thing. We don’twant to down anyone. Weencourage young people [tocompete].”

So be sure to make itdown to the Seashell onAugust 25-27 to meet someof the Seacoast’s risingstars.

“When last year’s win-ner was singing, you couldhave sworn he was FrankSinatra when you closedyour eyes,” says Kane.“This is really a fun event;you never know who you’llhave up there [on theSeashell stage].”
