Dear customers, Dear employees,

With this issue of the Badger Facts, a tumultuous financial year is coming to an end. After more than two years of plan-ning, we began construction on our logis-tics center earlier this year and moved in this October. Continuing daily operations during construction was challenging for everyone including architects, manage-ment and employees alike.

Contrary to the global economic trends and our local facility construction, Badger Meter Europa GmbH achieved a record in sales that had not been previously achieved in our 40-year history. I am proud of all of our Badger Meter Europa GmbH staff members who contributed to this success in spite of often-difficult working conditions. I am thankful to all our customers for the faith in our products and our services, which we have turned into our credo. It came true, our investment in new products and our engagement in new markets paid off. With the new ultra-modern logistics center, we will further optimize customer service. You can also look forward to new and innovative flow metering and control solutions that we will release in 2014.

I personally extend an offer inviting you to meet us at one of the upcoming international exhibitions. See for yourself, the innovative capacity of our company and our motivated staff members. I look forward to welcoming you personally.

I wish you all, dear customers and employees, a nice Christmas holiday with your family and the best season‘s greet-ings.

Sincerely yours,

Horst Gras

New logistics center completed

The new logistics center was completed in October 2013 after two years of plan-ning and building. Our greatly expanded product offering due to the integration of the Racine products into our portfolio made capacity expansion essential for improved lead times on popular meter models. The Neuffen logistics center is a strategic investment by Badger Meter to delivery timely shipment of products for customers worldwide.

The addition of a high-density Kardex storage system expands our capacity for warehousing smaller products and assemblies in a compact space while additional high-bay racks utilizing the full height of the area were added to accom-modate larger items. Our overall storage capacity has doubled to more than 300 m2

of storage space and there are 1800 depositaries of inventory and two floors in the warehouse.

In addition, we have also doubled our operational capacity through the addition of workstations. Four stations are now available, whereby two can serve several material hoppers simultaneously.

New high-performance inventory management software was deployed to help ensure operational efficiency. The software coordinates the control and management of the Kardex storage lift system, integrates the open warehouse, and facilitates collection of parts to fulfill orders via a mobile handheld computer with integrated 2C-barcode scanner. The software optimally routes the staff through the warehouse to collect and commission all parts on a customer order.

Shipping capacity has been tripled, including ample space for packaging larger items. Investments included three new packaging stations, one additional packag ing machine, a new crane, new transport equipment, and forklifts.

The project plan required sophisticated planning and organization to ensure the non-interruption of shipments to custom-ers during construction. Because the new warehouse addition is located where the shipping and receiving dock had formally been located, the shipping and receiving departments were temporarily relocated to other parts of the building. Tents were used to provide additional temporary capacity and warehousing procedures were adjusted. Other changes early in the construction also include the creation of a new access and parking area in back of the building and a second employee entry.

Next steps included excavation and construction of the basement followed by the extension of the production hall. The basement design included a system to drain ground water away from the struc-ture. Once the basement was complete, the existing wall of the old shipment area was demolished and the annex of the new hall was built. Finally, the warehouse was reorganized and we were accompanied by the company K-LOG Storage Systems who also constructed Magura’s new build ing in the Swabian Alps. The new facility complies with local regulations for environment, security and fire protection.

With this expansion, Badger Meter Europa GmbH is well equipped to meet new challenges and serve our customers faster and more efficiently.

Thanks to everyone, who was involved in the planning and construction, as well as to our staff, who remained motivated, despite the difficulties of working in a facility under construction, to ensure on-time deliveries.

iSonic 2000 discontinued – New iSonic 3000

ModMAG® M1000 / M1500 discontinued – New model ModMAG® M1000

The rugged and precise IOG oval gear meters for viscous or highly corrosive liquids – previously only available in ½“, ¾“, 1“ and 1“ High Flow – can now be ordered in 1 ½“, 2“ and 3“ sizes.

IOG meters can be used in a number of applications where conventional meters are not suitable. They measure liquids from 1 to 700 l / min and deliver high accuracy and repeatability. The meters are ATEX approved and custom lay lengths are available.

The E-Series® ultrasonic water meters use solid-state technology in a compact, totally encapsulated, weatherproof and UV- resistant housing, made of stainless steel and engineered polymer. The meters have a battery-powered display and a sig nal output. They comply with the lead-free provisions of the U.S.A. Safe Drinking Water Act. Equipped with an easy-to-read, 9-digit LCD display, the water meter offers consumption, rate of flow, reverse-flow indication and alarms. With no mov ing parts, the E-Series® meter also improves reliability and has greater extended low flow accuracy compared to other positive displacement meters. E-Series® are available in two sizes: 5/8” and 3/4”, with maximum flow rates between 0.4 up to 120 l/min.

The iSonic 2000 ultrasonic open-chan-nel flow meter will be discontinued ear-lier in 2014. It has been replaced by the next generation iSonic 3000. The new iSonic 3000 measures level, volume and flow in open channels. At a lower price than the iSonic 2000, the iSonic 3000 also features a USB connection and may be ordered with an optional Ethernet M-Bus interface.

Electromagnetic flow meters type ModMAG® M1000 and M1500 have been replaced by a new generation ModMAG® M1000. This new generation, which com-bines the features of both previous mo-dels, offers RS232, RS485 and ModBus® interfaces. Thanks to its excellent price-to-perform-ance ratio, ModMAG® M1000 can be chosen for a broad spectrum of applica-tions including machinery plants, vehicles and batching processes. Available sizes range from DN 6 to DN 200 with various process connections including DIN flanges, dairy pipe connections, and TriClamp®.

NEWThe unit can be programmed to dif-ferent setpoints. The output may be transmitted via the two available relays or the four analog outputs. The built-in data logger is capable of storing data intervals for all data channels. The iSonic 3000 can interface four ultrason-ic sensors simultaneously to perform independ ent or combined level, volume and open channel flow measurements.

The new models are expected for the first quarter 2014.

New VISION 2000 in brass

The new B3000 flow monitor provides a flexible, durable, easy-to-use solution for flow metering applications. The B3000 makes it easy to monitor flow, with a crisp dot-matrix display capable of simultaneous display of flow rate and flow total. With a wide variety of enclosure options for both liquid and gas applications, from intrinsically safe and explosion proof

The Blancett® B1100 turbine flow meter has been designed to meet the demands of the most rigorous flow measurement applications. Originally developed for petrochemical applications, the B1100 is an ideal meter for liquid flow measurement on or off the oilfield. The meter features a 316 stainless steel housing and rotor support, CD4MCU stainless steel rotor, and abrasion-resistant tungsten carbide rotor shaft and journal bearings. These materials help the meter to maintain accuracy and mechanical integrity when measuring the corrosive and abrasive fluids found in many industries.

The new turbine meter VISION 2000 in brass housing is designed for measuring water, many water-based liquids, oil, gasoline, diesel, antifreeze, refrigerants, paints, and ink. That makes the VISION meter the right solution for applications in cooling systems, dosing systems, water treatment units, heating systems, solar plants, fuel consumption measurement, and fuel injection systems.

VISION 2000 with brass housing guarantees a long lifespan without any loss of accuracy. The small, compact-sized meters can be installed in any orientation and do not require a straight-length of pipeline on the upstream side. A large number of generated pulses delivers good measurement resolution. Because the rotor is very light-weight, the meter’s response time is very fast.

In addition to measuring a liquid flow rate, the Dynasonics® DXN is an ideal solution for hydronic energy metering. The built-in datalogger makes it easy to facilitate energy studies on heating and cooling loops in building automation systems or in process applications. The Dynasonics® DXN is equipped with a built-in energy calculator designed to measure the rate and quantity of heat or cooling deliver-ed to or removed from devices such as heat exchangers and air conditioners, or delivered to subtenants or departments in a facility. The DXN measures the volumet-ric flow rate of the heat exchanger liquid, the temperature at the inlet pipe and the

A Dynasonics® TFXB Ultra with DTTN sen-sors was chosen for the Korean Hwa-Do sewage treatment plant and the service storm sewer overflow outlet. The line size was 750 mm and the carbon-steel pipe was wrapped in 4 mm thick polyethylene. Our Korean distributor Jasan Instrument Inc. faced process and installation challenges including an inlet pipe length that was too short, pipes partially buried with concrete that hampered the use of stainless steel strip bands, and the fluid level was consistently fully filled at its normal state; in case of rain, the unit would have measured an overflow rate.

The measuring site was tested with a model TFXP before the installation to confirm feasibility of the clamp-on ultra-sonic measurement technique. Due to partially buried pipes, it was impossible to use stainless steel mounting straps or a "Z-mounting method" installation. Magnetic bases and jigs where selected to secure the DTTN sensors to the pipe. To facilitate coupling to the pipe, the polyethylene wrapped on the out-side of the pipe was removed and the surface was ground smooth. The DTTN sensors were then mounted on the metal jig and magnetic base. Over 10% of the signal strength was achieved and resulted in a good flow measurement.

Heating / cooling measurement (Btu metering)

Dynasonics® TFXB Ultra application example of a clamp-on version in a sewage treatment plant under harsh conditions

temperature at the outlet pipe. Heat flow measurement can be delivered in Btu, watts, joules, kilowatts and others.

Case study To measure and control chilled water into an HVAC system, our distributor Kimans F.Z.E. in the United Arab Emirates installed a Dynasonics® DXN hybrid portable flow and energy meter with clamp-on ultrasonic DTTN sensors with 1 MHz on the out-side of the main DN 600, GRE pipe at the district cooling plant. 80% signal strength was easily achieved and the meter successfully provided flow measurements that matched end customer expectations.

To further improve signal strength, a new mounting jig for the DTTN sensors was designed and installed. The new jig, as illustrated, was welded onto the pipe surface. The new jig delivered over 25% of the signal strength and a good flow measurement.

Key point of this application

1. Jigs provide an alternative installation method with stainless steel straps cannot be used.

2. The V-mounting method offers good measuring results for large pipes

3. Pre-testing of an application with a portable flow meter (e.g. the Dynasonics® DXN) helps ensure feasibility of applica-tion up front.

Trainees visited the Remag facility in 2013

Badger Meter Europa trainees Carina Jäger, Maria Antonella Rittaco and Janina Schweizer share a report on their excursion to Switzerland.

Our trainee excursion began early in the morning, at 6.30 am at Badger Meter Euro-pa GmbH, located in Neuffen, Germany. From there we drove to the Stuttgart air-port. After a 25 minute flight we landed in Zurich (Switzerland). We then travelled by train to Bern, where we visited the Remag AG company.

Remag is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Badger Meter Organizationally, Remag AG reports to Badger Meter Europa GmbH. Donat Pürro, Remag s Managing Director, has 12 employees.

Mr. Pürro conducted a guided tour of the company inclusive the production depart-ment. VISION turbine meters are handmade produced and verified at the Remag facility. We had the opportunity to assemble a VISION turbine meter.

Together with Mr. Pürro we toured the city of Bern by Segways. Segways are electro-nic transporters with two wheels that are moved by the balance of the rider. Riding the Segway was fun. In the evening we enjoyed an excellent three-course meal at the Bellevue Palace Restaurant and had a very interesting conversation. The next day we had free time to explore the city of Bern. Afterwards we took the train to Zurich, where we enjoyed our last hours in Switzerland. Two happy days ended that evening.

We thank Badger Meter Europa for a successful trainee excursion.
