About KashmirA heaven on Earth, Kashmir is located in the north-western region of the Indian Subcontinent. With abundant natural beauty, the destination until the mid 19th century was geographically denoted as the valley nestledbetween the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain range. However, at present Kashmir denotes a much larger area that includes the Indian administered state of Jammu and Kashmir.

History of KashmirAccording to a legend, it is believed that Kashyap, the great sage drained a lake, which was inhabited by the Brahmins and then the place came to be known as Kashmir. A synonym for its turbulent past, Buddhism wasintroduced in the region by the missionaries of Emperor Ashoka. This religion flourished in Kashmir until the 2nd century, till the time it was ruled by Kushan. However, for several centuries, Hinduism was the dominantreligion of Kashmir.

In the 7th century, the destination was under the rule of Durlabhavarrdhana, who founded the Karkota Dynasty. This was replaced in 855 AD by the Utpalas, who were then succeeded by the Tantrins, Yaskaras, Guptasand Loharas respectively.

In 1346, the last Hindu king, Udiana Deva was replaced by Shams-ud-Din, the first Muslim king, who reigned in Kashmir. However, in 1586, the Mughal Emperor Akbar conquered Kashmir and made it a part of hisempire.

In 1757, Kashmir saw the victory of Ahmed Shah Durrani as a result of which the destination went under the rule of Pakistan until 1819. However, Ranjit Singh won Kashmir from Pakistan and added it to his SikhEmpire.

In 1846, the Sikhs were defeated by the British army and sold Kashmir to Ghulab Singh of Jammu. The destination was sold under the Treaty of Amritsar for INR 7.5 million. As a result of this treaty, Ghulab Singhacquired the status of an independent prince of Kashmir.

Later, he conquered Ladakh also, which he added to his dominion. After he died in 1857, he was succeeded by Maharaja Ranbir Singh. As time passed, the destination was ruled by Maharaja Partap Singh and

Maharaja Hari Singh respectively.

In 1947, during the reign of Hari Singh, the Indo-Pakistan partition took place. However, during that time the rulers of the princely states were given freedom to accede to either Pakistan or India or to remain independent.Since the Maharaja of Kashmir was a Hindu, so he decided to join India, despite the fact that majority of population residing in Kashmir were Muslims.

Featured review about KashmirBeauty of the land-Kashmir"I went to Kashmir seven months, for the first time. This is a prelude to the series of Kashmir stories I shall be sharing. It was in the summer when I led my first tour to Kashmir with my family. The tale of Kashmir willalways start with that cold breeze that hits your face as soon as you get down at Srinagar and stays with you faithfully till the end. The story will, as it must, talk of the beauty of the land, It will talk of the apple orchards andthe saffron fields you read about in your Lonely Planet Guide, but it must not forget the chinars, magnificent trees with trunks so large. Its wonderful to see pretty houseboats on the Dal, Gulmarg's cable car (the highestin the world) and skiing track, and Sonamarg's popularity as a snowboarding and horse riding destination. The famous places are Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Yousmarg, Dodpathri, Verinag, Kokernag,Patnitop, Lakhanpur" - Mohd Imran, Indore, 2 weeks ago

Actual Heaven on Earth!"If somebody wants to see or imagine a heaven on earth. Kashmir is the best place. Hugh mountains covered with snow, shining high in sunlight, the centre of attraction, the Dal lake. Best, unbelievable beauty of nature. The Nehru garden in the centre of lake is mesmerising." - Kamal Vankawala, Surat, 4 weeks ago

True paradise on earth"It is truly said, if there is Paradise on Earth, it's here in Kashmir.

Yes truly it's a Paradise. I visited on 25th March to 31st March, the best time to see snow. It's snow snow everywhere. The climate was cold but manageable. It was 5-6 degrees all through out, expect for in Gulmarg. Here it was minus 1, so we got to see snowfall.

We were only our family. My wife, my son of 6 yrs and I. I know first thing comes to ones mind is how cold it is. Yes it is cold but pretty manageable, provided you take along proper woollens with you. Body warmers are ofgreat use, specially for kids.

In hotels which I have stayed (I guess most hotels have this facility) are fitted with heaters and heat mattress on bed. So room stays quite warm.

Places to see : we started with Srinagar with a House boat stay on Dal Lake. Go around Dal lake in Shikara Ride for two hours. First hour is mostly included by your tour agent, 2nd hour is of Rs. 300 to 400. Beautifulexperience.

In Pahalgam, go sight seeing on horse. Very enjoyable and Rs. 850 to 1000 depending on the sights covered. I took separate horse for my kid. Horses are trained so all well and a helper comes along so no worries. It'sa good experience. Go to other sightseeing in car that is local. Only local taxis are allowed in Pahalgam. Rs. 600 to 1500 and no bargain. Remember this is a separate cost, no tour operator will include this.

Gulmarg is the best location. Just awesome in this time of month. Fully covered with Snow and we were the lucky ones. We got to see snowfall. Paisa Vasool. We did not do Gondala Cable ride as all the snow was rightat our hotel. As it was snowing we couldn't go. But if weather permits, it is a must visit.

Sonmarg, we did not go due to bad weather. This was on 28th March and it was a flood alert. But weather was not that bad. Again to Srinagar for two days. Veg food is no problem but for non-veg people, it's a heavenagain.

Advice: take proper woollens, hand gloves and body warmers." - Siddharth Shah, Mumbai, Apr 6, 2015

Literally, if there is heaven on earth, it is here, here and here"Literally, if there is heaven on earth, it is here, here and here. Exactly that was the feeling that we had on touching the ground at Srinagar airport. The short 40 minute flight from Jammu was uneventful; The view fromthe plane was wonderful and the feeling after touching the ground, was nothing but exhilaration and pure joy.

The joy increased manifolds, when we spotted Nazeer Wani of India Global Tours and my old friend at the gate receiving us with a warm, huge smile and a bear hug. He had made meticulous arrangements for ourKashmir tour.First we went around Srinagar. Saw the Jhelum, Hazarat Bal with a backdrop of the snow capped Himalayas.Went to the different famed Gardens. Nishat etc. though the gardens were barren at this time of the year. Then we went around Hotel Lalit Grand which is palatial property and very picturesque. Then we were taken up the Shankaracharya Hill thru security gates etc. Mobiles and cameras had to be kept back in the car asphotography is prohibited. We were blessed with a very welcome fresh snowfall. We climbed the steep 300 odd steps to the Temple amid the snowfall. It was a wonderful experience. Climbing the last few steps &entering the temple barefooted was a 'cold' experience on the wet evening. The Lord Shiva's Lingam is magnificent in all its Glory . The time spent there was very peaceful and spiritual.

Thereafter we were lodged in a House Boat on the Dal Lake moored at a spot just opposite the Holiday Inn hotel on the promenade. After depositing the luggage and a piping hot cup of Qahewa-The Kashmiri Chai, replete with Saffron, Almonds and Cardamom - we left for a tour-de-Dal in a Shikara. It was a cold evening. The boatman covered us withdouble blankets and made us feel princely. We went upto Nehru Park and the cold icy wind forced us to return to the warm interiors of the House Boat (I forget the name). The room was made comfortable by Farooque, the HB keeper, with a Gas heater. Dinner around 9 PM was home cooked Chappatis, Rice, Vegetables and Daal (Lentils). We finished with a Qehawa and retired to the room. The room was now heated with a "Bukhari"for the night and not with the Gas Heater. A sleepy end to the first day in the gorgeous valley.

The second day threw up landscape of white sheets all around. The night had a snowfall again till 3 AM. round 9 AM we left for Gulmarg in an SUV with Naseer Ahmed. The journey to Gulmarg and the experience in thenext review.Tip- Do not buy goods from the mobile shops and salesman who hound you on the Dal Jheel. It is safe to buy from the innumerable emporia in the markets. Pashmina is never available for a few Hundreds or thousands.Authentic Pashmina goes upto Lac and is best purchased with a local known assistance. Travelling by road from Jammu in this season should be avoided as the plentiful snow and landslides can close the tunnel androads for days, making your plans go haywire.

Travelling in winter, you must carry heavy woollens if you want to enjoy. Liquor vends are not easy to find and expensive so if you are a follower of bacchhus, please carry your own tipple.

Hope my experience help's you all!" - Gaurang Kirtikar, Mumbai, Mar 20, 2014

A week long trip to Heaven""Gar firdaus barruae zaminastho haminastho haminasthi haminastho" Straight from the heart and very true words. We could not have asked for a better vacations than KASHMIR. Plan to visit Kashmir started somewhere in Mid Feb'13. Booked the to and fro flight tickets for 9 people in Feb. Patiently waiting for Aug to come. After very hectic and hot May and June, the wait for this trip was getting more eager with the pass of everyday.

After having numerous discussion on destinations, itinerary, hotels, houseboats, taxi etc, as time arrived every single bit started automatically falling in place.Delhi -- Srinagar -- Pahalgam -- Srinagar -- Gulmarg -- Srinagar -- Sonmarg -- Ksheer Bhawani -- Srinagar -- Delhi. Our journey started on 08th Aug 13, when 7 among our group started from Jaipur and reachedFaridabad amid heavy rains. I and my wife waited impatiently at Faridabad.

Day 1:

Journey for Kashmir started on 09th Aug'13, early morning. We all landed at Srinagar airport around 15:00 Hrs. Being EID day almost entire Srinagar was closed. Fortunately our pre booked taxis (by my office) were on

time at airport. They drove us directly to Pahalgam, reached Pahalgam around 6'0 clock in evening. We had office guest house Bakshi Huts booked at Pahalgam. Location of the guest house was awesome, surroundedby greeenry all over, river flowing just across the roads. Colourful beds of variety of flowers. Retired after having rounds of tea, snacks and finally dinner.

Day 2:

Started the day with mist all around, fantastic weather awesome feel. Booked taxi to Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari. Betaab Valley was best among these all. Some members enjoyed by taking a dip in coldfreezing water at Betaab Valley. Spend some great picnic time at Betab Valley. We thought Chandanwari to be a bit busy due to Amarnath Yatra, but to our surprise it had just a handful of pandal owners and somesecurity personals. The flow of river at Chandanwari was enormous, amazing views. Returned back in the evening. After some rest at guest house near the river bed soaked our feet in the chilling water, relaxed andenjoyed. Tried out badminton skills later :-) And retired for the day.

Day 3:

This was full of activities. Hired ponies for a trip to uphill mini Switzerland. With our inexperience of riding ponies, the route seemed a bit scary, yet because of the group everybody was enjoying the dangerous ride. Themost relaxed among all was my little nephew (3.5 year old), and he kept on encouraging everyone saying Darna mat kuch nahi hoga'. The entire pony ride and halts at various location took close to 6 hours. Enroute wasvery picturesque Kashmir Valley, Mini Switzerland and 2-3 more points (which I could not recall by name now) and a serene waterfall. Being Rajasthani and deprived of flowing water, our parents became super excitedby the scene of waterfall and could not resist a dip in ice cold water, while we could barely touch the water for 30 sec at a stretch. Last point of the Pony ride was called Mini Switzerland, truly mesmerizing lush greenmeadows. Great views all around and a very satisfying and eye pleasing experience. But, it started drizzling soon after we reached the last point, so have to leave much earlier than expected in order to avoid ponyslipping due to slush and mud. But what a wonderful day. I wished it had continued for some more time.

Day 4:

Time to say goodbye to Pahalgam and head towards Srinagarar. What a fantastic hospitality at guest house, amazing comfort and food there. Will truly remember and miss this for long long time. Reached Srinagar in 3-4 hours. En-route visited bat factory and some dry fruits shops. Brought some famous dry fruits, they turned out to be really good in quality. Our experience of enjoying lovely pleasant weather in Pahalgam starteddiminishing as soon as we started on sun scorching highway and vanished completed upon reaching Srinagar. Checked in at guest house, filled our starving tummies and headed for Shankaracharya Temple and DalLake Shikara ride. Steps of Shankaracharya temple proved a pure physical fitness stress test to every one in the group. And to our great surprise my father who was initially hesitant looking at his weak knees to climb allthe stairs, he successfully managed all the stairs. It was a pride moment for him and all. We then headed to Dal Lake, with sunset approaching we were among the last few to book a shikara ride. Enjoyed the peacefulshikara ride in awesome climate and splendid company. Finally retired for the day after having amazing almost home cooked food at guest house.

Day 5:

This day started a bit early as we were planning to visit Gulmarg today. And also, this day started with a long awaited spell of rains in Srinagar. Think it poured whole night. We started for Gulmarg at around 8:00 AM.Reached Gulmarg around 10:30. We were informed that 2nd phase of gondola was not functioning that day due to bad weather, were a bit disappointed but had no choice. It was pouring heavily in Gulmarg and we hadjust small umbrellas at our service that too needed to be shared. Booked Gondola ride for phase 1, as it was off season we didn't had to wait for long. By the time we reached phase 1 we were all almost drenched. It wasreally very cold, and icing on top was rain + mist + heavy winds. Could not have expected much. Without spending much time we ran towards the tents to have anything hot maggi, tea, coffee. Wow! what a relief fromthe cold. Returned back to the taxi stand, getting further drenched and had just 1 unanimous desire reaching Srinagar ASAP.

Day 6:

This day was for visiting majestic garden of Srinagar. The very famous Mughal gardens. Such a delight it was to view such highly maintained beautiful gardens. Indra devta dint gave us any respite this day as well. Wekept on hopping from one garden to another with small umbrellas at our service. Too romantic for couples who were sharing the umbrella service. We started with beautiful Pari Mahal, Chasme shahi, botanical garden, nishat bagh and shlimar bagh. Gosh! and then ladies of our group started the favorite time pass of ladies and worst time killer of gents. Shopping and bargaining. My mother is expert in both these things. so we ended byjust a few Kashmiri kurtis + 2 same stole in 3 hours. All the items of the shops were open still they were demanding 'kuch aur dihao' he he he he ;-)With a great satisfaction of visiting great gardens and done with some hopefully good shopping we called it a day.

Day 7:

This was the Independence day 15th Aug and we had to leave for Sonmarg. With extra tight security in and around Srinagar and some notorious placed en-route Sonmarg we were advised to start around 05:00 AM inthe morning. We obeyed the suggestions and stared nearly around 05:00 AM. Had frequent stops for security checks but rest all journey was good. Faced no issues at all. Reached Sonmarg around 09:00 AM. We hadbooked JKTDC Thajwas huts. But the check in time was 12:00 so had to wait and roam on local Sonmarg market till then. Fortunately, we got the rooms by 10:30. Location of huts was just awesome, great mountain andmeadows view. It was raining in Sonmarg as well. Soon after putting our luggage in huts we started for Thajwas glacier trek cum ponny ride. Breathtaking views and superb experience. Though it had very little snow, mainly ice. It felt amazing to us. Returned to huts, enjoyed the sunset scenes from huts. Super great.

Day 8:

Got up a bit late. Thankfully. It was a bit sunny today so view of mountain peaks was very bright. Thoroughly enjoyed the last few hours at Sonmarg. Left from Sonmarg for Srinagar but landed in Kheer Bhawani. Goodreligious experince. Visited Manasbal Lake, and few more gardens around Kheer Bhawani but these could be compared with the same of Srinagar. Heard loads of stories of locals. Very touching and a bit scary. Called ita day a bit early as we had quite early morning flight back to Delhi. We had to leave even more early as next day was a bandh called by some religious leaders of Kashmir and security was extremely tight near KheerBhawani temple. Security personals told us to leave as early as 03:00 AM in morning as after that they would not allow us to leave the campus till the bandh is called over.

Day 9

Left very early for Srinagar airport. And returned back to usual life.

A genuine request to all the future travelers to Kashmir - Treat the locals well, and offer them tip for there service as per your capacity, as these live in extreme climates and circumstance and majority of there incomecomes from tourism only." - Vivek Sharma, Jaipur, Sep 28, 2013
