Mytchett Headlines The newsletter of Mytchett Primary and Nursery School

Autumn Issue 3

Friday 6th October 2017

Dear parents/carers,

Thank you to all of you who joined us for our

parent information session on Assessment last

week. For those of you who were unable to

attend, we have uploaded the presentation and

accompanying documents to the ‘Curriculum-

Assessment’ tabs on our website

www.mytchett.kite.academy

The documents give the objectives for each

‘Stage’ (Age-related expectation for each year

group) in reading, writing and maths.

Our Parent Consultation will be an opportunity

for you to clarify and queries that you may have

about these but it would be helpful if you could

glance at them before the meeting. This has all

been outlined in our mailing earlier this week

when we invited you to book consultation

appointments. Governors will be available to

chat to you during the sessions for you to share

with them how you are finding the system.

Harvest Festival Yrs 1-6

Next Friday 13th October 9.00am in the school hall

Please join us for our Autumn poetry and prose

-themed Harvest Festival in the hall.

This year once again, we are supporting

Farnborough Food Bank and ask for donations

of urgently needed items (see list on page 6).

We are advised that there are currently large

stocks of pasta, rice, soup, fish, cereals, and

pet food so we are asked to prioritise the listed

items that are in short supply. We will be joined

by members of the volunteer team to tell us

more about their work for the Trust on the day.

Other events coming up to note:

FFMPS AGM 7-9pm on Tues 10th October.

ALL PARENTS WELCOME to this annual meeting when

plans for the forthcoming year are shared and new

ideas discussed. FFMPS purchased a minibus for the

school last year. New fundraising will be for the

purchase of new computing equipment across the

school.

RESIDENTIAL VISITS –Years 4-6 Information Evenings

(see calendar)

17th November CHILDREN IN NEED– more

information to follow.

MUFTI DATES for Christmas tombola have been

added to the calendar. (NEW PARENTS! Children are

invited to come out of uniform to school on these

dates, bringing a gift for the tombola stall)

Craze of the fortnight

School councillors are currently discussing lunch and

playtime ‘crazes’ (where children are invited to bring

small toys to use at play and lunchtimes) but until a

timetable is finalised and shared with you, children

should NOT bring any toys to school.

Finally, we are trying to ensure that no parent misses

Headlines! Please advise the school office if you know

you have not received it fortnightly or advise any

friends who don’t have it, to let us know. Where we

have been advised of them, all parent email addresses

are now entered onto the contact system. Headlines

should be all parents’ ‘go to’ for up-to-date

information and we must ensure that you are

receiving it.

JEWELLERY POLICY UPDATE Pierced earrings and hair accessories. PLEASE NOTE that children MUST be able to remove their own earrings for PE lessons otherwise they are not able to participate in the lesson. We recommend that youngest children's earrings are removed and left at home for PE days. Older children who are capable of removing their own earrings should bring a small box into school to store them during PE sessions. Any earrings that are worn should be of a plain stud design and children and their parents will be reminded of this if they do not follow policy. Hair accessories—ribbons, bands and ties should be of a simple discreet style and in school colours– black, grey, white or burgundy. PE kit— PE kit must be in school every day and as the colder months approach , it is a good idea to add black tracksuit bottoms and a black or burgundy sweatshirt o the children’s kit. We go outside in all weathers and want the children to enjoy their PE sessions. Therefore it is important that they are suitably dressed.

Calling all volunteers!

Schools are busy places and there is always lots to

do! If you are able to support in school in any way

please see your class teacher. Ideally this would be

on a regular basis to hear readers, practice spellings

and mental maths. Equally, if you feel confident to

work with a group in class we welcome your

support. If you have a particular skill or interest

such as sewing or technology that may enhance a

topic please let us know. All volunteers must have a

DBS check through our school before they can help.

Please arrange this through the School Office.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

The policy includes a reintroduction of the Penalty

Fine for unauthorised absence– usually for parents

who have taken their child out of school for 5 days

or more without the authorisation of the Head

Teacher.

All Kite Academy Trust schools have now adopted

an ‘Application for Leave of Absence’ form for you

to complete if you are obliged to take your child

out of school. This is downloadable on the school

website by following the ‘Parents’ and ‘Forms’

links.

Last week our Year Six pupils put themselves forwards

for the important role of House Captain. They made a

speech about why they thought they should represent

their house and then there was a secret ballot.

Congratulations to the following children.

Sport Captains

Miss Lye and Mrs Barber have been watching Year 5 closely and are pleased to announce the children who have been

Robins and Duckings Harvest Celebrations

Robins and Ducklings will be joining together to

celebrate Harvest during the week of October

9th. They will sing some songs

and talk about why we

celebrate Harvest.

Parents are not invited to this

as it can be very

overwhelming to have a big

audience when you are small.

However, we would be very grateful if your

child could bring a contribution for our Harvest

Donations. These will be displayed in Robins

and Ducklings classrooms and then

collected by Farnborough Food Bank in line with

the rest of the school.

Meeting for Robins’ Parents

Thursday 19th October 2.30pm

The children in Robins are settling well. They all

now have a reading book in their school bag and

we ask that you read with your child every day at

home. On 19th October at 2.30 Miss Lye and

Miss Rahimi will be holding a short information

meeting about how to support your child with

their reading at home. We look forward to

welcoming you to the meeting

and continuing our valuable

partnership with our parents.

Hearing your child read

Part of your child’s home learning is to read aloud at home. At your welcome meetings at the

beginning of term your class teacher will have set out their expectations for reading at home and how

often this should be done. This is closely monitored by our Leadership Team as we strongly value your

support in this matter and know the impact of daily reading at home can have on a child’s progress

across all areas of the curriculum.

If your child is a developing reader, daily practice is needed to consolidate phonics and key words. If

your child is an independent reader, your input into their understanding of vocabulary and the text that

they are reading is incredibly important. This can only happen if you are listening to them read.

Top tips for reading at home

- Use bedtime as an ideal time to snuggle up with your child’s book

- Compromise! Take it in turns to read a page, sentence or even a word

- Hunt for words or letters in the book as opposed to reading the whole book

- Log onto Bug Club and read an online book

- Visit your local library

- Share a bedtime story

- Ask your child to point to the words as you read

- Look for new or exciting words and talk about what they mean

Please see the website for more information on how we teach reading in school and how you can

support at home.

Farnborough foodbank provides three days of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food.

A TYPICAL FOOD PARCEL INCLUDES:

Breakfast cereals Soup Pasta Rice Pasta sauce Tinned beans Tinned meat Tinned vegetables Tinned fruit Tea or coffee Sugar Biscuits

Farnborough Food bank is our chosen charity to support at

harvest time this year.

The Bank provides three days’ nutritionally balanced

emergency food and support to local people who are

referred in crisis. They are part of a nationwide network of

foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to

combat poverty and hunger across the UK.

A number of Mytchett school’s families have benefited from

Foodbank parcels and we would like to continue to support

them.

Your child should bring their donation to the

tables in the school hall on the morning of

13th October.
