The Baptism of the Lord

Lovers of Life

The voice from heaven acclaims not only to Jesus but to the onlookers that in him there is a new creation: “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” We who are baptized into Christ have the same assurance; we are beloved sons and daughters of God, not because of any good works we have done or may do in the future, but simply because of God’s gift of union with his Son. Nowhere is God’s generous graciousness more obvious than in infant baptism (and especially when this is by immersion). The small, vulnerable child who is plunged into the font has -offered God no obedience—except that of being born. The assembly claps and smiles, and wonders what this naked and dripping child will be, what joy will flood her or his life, what chaos may threaten. Yet we believe that in the water the child has been reborn as a descendant of Jesus, a survivor of death, a lover of life. To live as such, to say “yes” to this identity in the years ahead, is the baptismal challenge. In the liturgical calendar, today is both the last Sunday of the season of Christmas and the first Sunday of Ordinary Time. The Church does not want us to forget our joy at the birth of Jesus but reminds us that to be true to this we need to be reborn and renewed every day in the Spirit of Jesus—that we need to go forward through the weeks of the year as women and men on whom the baptismal water is never dry, as those who will work for justice, for right relationships with God and with one another, as people who will be impartial in our love and gently generous in our service. Amantes de la vida La voz del cielo aclama no solo a Jesús sino a los espectadores de que en él hay una nueva creación es mi Hijo, el Amado, con quien estoy muy complacido. Nosotros, los bautizados en Cristo, tenemos la misma seguridad somos amados hijos e hijas de Dios, no por las buenas obras que hemos hecho o podemos hacer en el futuro, sino simplemente por el don de unión de Dios con su Hijo. En ninguna parte es más generosa la generosidad de Dios que en el bautismo infantil (y especialmente cuando es por inmersión). El niño pequeño y vulnerable que se sumerge en la fuente no ha ofrecido a Dios obediencia, excepto la de nacer. La asamblea aplaude y sonríe, y se pregunta qué será este niño desnudo y goteante, qué alegría inundará su vida, qué caos puede amenazar. Sin embargo, creemos que en el agua el niño ha renacido como un descendiente de Jesús, un sobreviviente de la muerte, un amante de la vida. Vivir como tal, decir si a esta identidad en los años venideros, es el desafío bautismal. En el calendario litúrgico, hoy es el último domingo de la temporada de Navidad y el primer domingo del tiempo ordinario.
