Did you know that 3 out of 5 nonprofits fail in the first 5 years? I am proud to share that 2012 will mark our fifth anniversary.

In July 2005, Lori Arquilla Andersen lost her battle with brain cancer at the age of 35. During the prior two years of treatments, her friends - who owned a web company in Chicago - created a beautiful website for Lori and her husband, Erik, to easily connect with loved ones around the country to get the emotional support they needed.

Lori and I shared mutual friends who introduced us to each other. As a cancer survivor since 1997, I joined their online community and immediately understood the benefits of using a website to communicate health updates. During my own struggle with advanced ovarian cancer at age 27, I did not have a good way to streamline communications, which added significant stress and burden to my recovery process.

After Lori passed away, I couldn’t stop thinking about the impact she made by expanding her support network via a personal website. Her mom, Linda, once told me that Lori’s website was their family’s “lifeline”.

That word stuck with me. LIFELINE. That’s when I knew how I could make lives better for people diagnosed with cancer, and their entire support networks.

MyLifeLine.org Cancer Foundation began to organize in August 2006, our non-profit charity was incorporated in March 2007, and the first personal website was launched in May 2007.

Last year, over 1 million visits came from 158 countries and territories. 368,000+ unique visitors have reached out to give and/or receive support, a 15% monthly increase. 48% of visitors come back 9x or more. This data tells me our online support communities are active and vital, which achieves our primary goal to provide connection, inspiration, and healing to families affected by cancer.

In celebrating the organization’s success, I’m also cognizant of where and how the organization still needs to expand. In 2011, I made the personal decision to step down as the Executive Director for a few reasons. The most important reason was the growing needs of the organization. I was trying to balance my life between MyLifeLine.org with another important priority, being a mom to my young twin boys. We reached a point where I couldn’t do both full-time roles at the same time anymore. I decided it was time to hire a new director.

As founder, I remain an active volunteer on the Board of Directors as the Chief Mission Officer. My passion about MyLifeLine.org grows with every family we serve, and I am committed to accelerating the momentum towards accomplishing our mission.

My vision will continue:

• To empower families affected by cancer with a unique, innovative, online service targeted to their specific needs. • To reach cancer patients and families as close to diagnosis as possible, so we can help during the entire treatment process. • To collaborate with others to advance our mission.

We achieve our mission because of the people who support MyLifeLine.org – it’s a tremendous team effort of smart, loyal, and caring board members, staff, volunteers, donors, and sponsors.

With much gratitude,

What’s so innovative about Cancer Founda-tions these days you might ask? While some Cancer Foundations focus on treatments, cures and other valuable work, we focus our energies on the newest internet technologies to provide real-time 24/7 support to patients and their families through their MyLifeLine.org personal websites.

If you, a friend or a family member want access to these free tools, say the word, and you’ll join the online community of patients, friends and family we’re currently supporting!

MyLifeLine.org experienced a great year in 2011! We experienced tremendous growth in the number of people we supported through their cancer journey increasing membership by 70%, serving over 50,000 people around the

world, and logging over 3 million page views to our website. During this time we also saw the hiring of a new Executive Director, Melissa Bowen, and I was elected President of the Board following an amazing tenure by Dr. Robert Fisher, M.D.

In this new role as President, I’m happy to report additional highlights of 2011 including:

• The mobile version of our website was launched. • Live Chat Support to provide real time support to our members. • The launch of our Blog (blog.mylifeline.org). • A record-breaking Jockeys, Juleps and Jazz Derby Event.

While so many things have changed and improved this year, some things have con-tinued to endure like our considerable assistance from cancer support communities, corporate partners, health care systems, and individual donors who make our mission possible. We thank you.

The other enduring part of our story is the continuing mission to provide high-quality, innovative, and free services to the cancer community. May we always be able to do this!

To all of you, thank you for being part of our success and for the support you lend in our mission to support, admire, respect, celebrate and assist anyone whose life is impacted by cancer.

Best Regards,

Dennis Wakabayashi

MyLifeLine.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that encourages cancer patients and caregivers to create free, customized websites. Our mission is to empower patients to build an online support community of family and friends to foster connection, inspiration and healing. We believe a strong community is critical for cancer patients.

Nearly 1.5 million Americans per year are diagnosed with cancer. In our experience, people diagnosed with cancer are scared, shocked and unprepared. Friends and family want to help but don’t always know what to do. MyLifeLine.org has strived to be that first key resource to the cancer patient.

Since 2007, MyLifeLine.org has made a profound difference in the lives of cancer patients and in the community. Some of our highlights include:

• Our program research and evaluations have resulted in two abstracts being published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology in 2009 and 2010, one abstract and poster presentation at the Oncology Nursing Society annual conference in 2009 and an award-winning poster presentation at LIVESTRONG’s Annual Young Adult Alliance Conference in 2010. • During 2011 our membership of cancer patients increased over 70% and our friends and family increased 110% • We have served people in over 150 different territories and countries • We had over 3,000,000 page views this past year • A mobile friendly version of website launched-Mobile traffic has increased steadily since launch. • Live Chat support was added for members and guests • Learning links enhanced and made more user friendly • Our new iPhone app development began and we plan to launch this in 2012 • Blog.mylifeline.org successfully launched

To accomplish our mission we work hard every day to ensure that each network created is vital and serves the needs of our community. We continue to innovate and optimize the online experience for our members and guests.

We are excited about 2012 and beyond and are grateful to our members and supporters.

MyLifeLine.org Program HighlightsHelping CalendarMembers and caregivers post their needs for babysitting, meals, or a ride to the doctor. Family and friends are then encouraged to sign up on the calendar and help.

Guest MessagesFriends and family come here to write inspiring messages to the cancer patient in order to lift their spirits.

Member Update and PhotoGalleryMembers and caregivers use this as a journal, a blog, or an email alert. They write when they have energy and something to share–but just once. Stress is reduced and rest increased by not having to make dozens of contacts to co-workers, friends, neighbors and family. Everyone stays connected and the patient’s well-being is enhanced.

Inspiring QuotesEncouraging words of comfort and strength display throughout each personal website. Members can select prepopulated quotes and put in their own inspiring quotes.

Learning LinksPatients and caregivers share online links to cancer specific website resources for family and friends to learn about their diagnosis, treatment and related topics.

Giving AngelsA cancer diagnosis can cause financial devastation. The Giving Angels page is a place where the patient’s support network can ease the financial burdens of fighting cancer. Easy online payment options include PayPal and GiveForward.

Laughing MedicineShare a laugh. Share some inspiration. Healing follows.

MyLifeLine.org has found that frequent laughing is crucial to healing and reducing stress during cancer treatments. It’s not always easy to find things to laugh about, so MyLifeLine.org is constantly on the lookout for the lighthearted and just plain funny. Our members have suggested a variety of movies and books that helped them and their loved ones through treatment for cancer.

“We are all unique. We have our own ways of communicating, coping, helping, hurting, and healing. Our needs are diverse and our resources are limited. We all need a lifeline from time to time. MyLifeLine.org was exactly what I needed it to be, even when I didn’t know exactly what I needed. For that I will always be grateful.”–-Jen Garza (in loving memory of her husband Ruben Garza)

Melissa BowenExecutive Director

It is my pleasure to introduce myself to the community as the new Executive Director of MyLifeLine.org Cancer Foundation! I began my new role on January 3, 2012 and am looking forward to helping this relevant organization grow and expand to fulfill our vision that people affected by cancer feel connected and inspired during the healing process.

In my 20 years working in the non-profit field, I have had the pleasure of working with some great organizations including Boys & Girls Clubs and the YMCA. The experience gained from these organizations will help me weave together my talents and skills with the amazing work of the Founder, Board of Directors, and Staff over the last five years.

In 2012, MyLifeLine.org will celebrate 5 years of serving cancer patients and their caregivers! We believe that a strong support network is critical for cancer patients. Every day we provide free, personal websites to patients and caregivers so that they can easily connect with their family and friends during the patient’s treatment and recovery process.

I feel blessed and fortunate to be a part of this organization’s important work and hope to have the opportunity to meet many of our members and supporters. Feel free to contact me anytime with your comments and feedback on what we are doing well and/or how we can improve to better serve the cancer community.

Letter from the Executive Director

“This is a journey that I am on. I am not alone as MyLifeLine.org has provided a ticket for all of those who want to help me on this journey. I sincerely believe that MyLifeLine.org has helped me physically, emotionally and mentally over the last six months and I plan on it being there to do the same for me for many, many months to come!– Neil Stewart, diagnosed with pancreatic, liver and bowel cancer in August, 2011

Auckland, New Zealand

Healing outcomes are greatly advanced for patients who have strong suppport systems of family and friends.

“The website has literally carried me through this by allowing me to fight with dignity, grace, and pride. I use it as my vent, my muse and my solace. It allows me to communicate with everyone at once, and the responses I receive fuel my fire to eradicate cancer from my body. I thank MyLifeLine.org for being the most important tool in my journey to survive.”– Jax Arcaris

“When my daughter was too sick to write her own update, I was able to make postings for her so she could keep everyone abreast of new changes. However, MyLifeLine.org is more than a website to post updates and photos, it’s a great resource too, not only for the member but for their family and friends.

Thank you again for honoring Leslie this way. She just always wanted to make a difference to at least one person in this world (in addition to her mama).”–Love, Jan (In loving memory of her daughter, Leslie)
