PREFACEIn Myanmar, this is an exciting time for the trend of statistical development. A newstatistics law has been submitted for the parliamentary discussion and promulgation whichcan strengthen the participation of all those stakeholders who have to involve in thedevelopment process of Quality National Statistical System. The statistical cooperationmechanism has been established by forming the Committee on Data Accuracy and Quality ofStatisticsto strengthen not only horizontal but also vertical cooperation. In addition, astatistical policy brief and a National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) arealready endorsed by the Cabinet to implement which sets a clear path and concretemilestones for developing official statistics.Developing quality statistics is the need for evidence-based policy making, planning, monitoring and evaluation and these can set the stage, but they need to be translated from“better data and statistics”, " better informed policy and implementation" and enhanceeventually “better lives of Myanmar people” through committed statistical processes andinputs.I am very pleased to welcome the publication of Myanmar Statistical Yearbook, 2016that has now come out with more comprehensive graphic, content and design with theexplanation of methodologies and technical notes. It will be also uploded at the MyanmarStatistical Information Service ( MMSIS ) (www.mmsis.gov.mm) to help the people to havean easy access and usable for everyone in Myanmar as well as for the people around theworld. I would like to thank all those who have worked hard with a firm commitment toquality statistics including development partners.(U Kyaw Win)Union MinisterMinistry of Planning and Finance
