Great Start!
The first semester after school athletic program is up and running. This fall, there are many opportunities for our students to participate on a sports team. Right now we are playing U-15 Boys and Girls Basketball, U-19 Boys Football, and U-11 Boys Football, Bench ball and Handball. We are also looking to start up U-15 and U-19 Boys
and Girls Volleyball.
Here are the dates for friendly games with other international schools. We are now in the process of scheduling additional friendly matches with other schools in the Myanmar International School Activities
Conference (MISAC) along with other international schools in the
region.
Here is a list of the games that we currently have scheduled. We are still adding games so the coaches will be in touch with you and your
children about any changes in the schedule:

MIS –Myanmar International School
Welcome to our new Newsletter that will be posted on our website monthly. We hope you enjoy it. This year besides following the International Cambridge Curriculum with its accreditation, MIS is in process of obtaining certification from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). WASC accreditation is a rigorous process. In order for MIS to be recognized as a credible school, we need accreditation from a governing authority such as WASC. With WASC accreditations, our students will graduate with a high school diploma – especially as they apply to colleges and universities. (page 2)

WASC accreditation is a rigorous process
According to the WASC guidelines, the
accreditation process is aimed at:
1. Assuring the educational community, the
general public, and other organisations and
agencies that MIS has been successfully
reviewed under WASC Commission Standards.
2. Promoting deep institutional engagement
with issues of educational effectiveness and
student learning.
1. 3. Developing and applying Standards to

Read more about our new Travel and Tourism IGCSE course, which started
this year for the first time. The syllabus develops practical skills across a range
of working roles and provides a global and local perspective on travel and
tourism. Students gain an overview of the huge and still growing industry,
and learn about popular destinations, costumer care, working procedure,
travel and tourism products and services marketing etc.…

SEDONA HOTEL – page: 5)
All of the stakeholders at MIS including parents, students, administrators, the owners and the greater school community are working together through this process to deliver the very best educational experience to our students. Over the next few months, MIS will reach out to you
for your valuable input as part of
the WASC process.
2015 is a year of growth for the
MIS Secondary Student Council. Newly
elected president, year 12 student Yar Zar
Min Htet (Frankie), beat his opponent year
10 student Sandy Myo Min by a margin of
only about 50 votes. There were some challenges to the election, held Friday
October 2. Many students had been dismissed to attend a friendly basketball
match, but organizers are confident the margin is wide enough to declare a winner.
Under Frankie's leadership, the
Student Council hopes to work on establishing some lasting organizational
structures to help meet student needs in the future. They are working on developing
new student activities such as newspaper
and yearbook clubs, additional sports, and social events for upcoming holidays such as
Halloween. The Secondary Student Council
also hopes to collaborate with the Primary
Student Council on initiatives to increase school spirit, improve the appearance and
cleanliness of the school buildings, and support existing volunteer and charity work
done by student clubs. Upcoming events include a spirit
week, uniform design competition, a survey
on the needs of the student body, and a social agenda including a repeat of last
year's successful spring Prom. Student
Council meetings are held each Tuesday
after school from 3:40 to 4:30 in room 203
with advisor Ms. Alexie Russ. Anyone wishing to share an idea with the student
council is encouraged to contact the
secretary and communications officer,
Lily (Aye Thura Phyo, representative
from 9.1).
4. Promoting within institutions a culture
of evidence where indicators of
performance are regularly developed and
data collected to inform institutional decision-making, planning, and
improvement.
5. Developing systems of institutional
review and evaluation that are tailored to
the school’s mission and vision.
6. Promoting the active interchange of
ideas among public and independent
institutions that furthers the principles of
improved institutional performance, and
educational effectiveness. The process of peer review is one of the great things about
the WASC process. Everyone concerned
about the education of our students is involved.

New Teachers and Assistants of 2015 – 2016 Academic Year
We would like to warmly welcome our new staff to the school. MIS has been growing rapidly over the last couple of years and greater number of classes means that more teachers are needed to support our
educational programmes. Our new teachers have a wealth of international experience, which they are more than happy to share with the students. We are one quarter into the school year and it’s wonderful
to see all the progress, - be it academic, language skills, sports or social interactions. We are looking forward to an even greater progress in the months to come!

On October 5th,
we traveled to
one of the affected
areas, Yowa village
in Hmawbi Township and
distributed supplies directly
to 100 families affected by
the flooding. It was a great

MIS students take
action to help the
community
Our first activity this year
was a fundraiser to help
victims of the floods that
devastated much of
Myanmar in July 2015 and
affected nearly one million
people. On September 4th,
“Better Tomorrow
members”, together with
both the Secondary and
the Primary students, raised
more than 1,900,000
Kyats through activities
including a non-uniform
day, a bake sale, henna
painting as well as direct
donations from the
community. The students
put in a large amount of effort in this activity.
Welcome to MIS Secondary! This academic year has brought with it a variety of new programmes, activities and opportunities for our students. Our IGCSE programme has been expanded to include courses like Sociology, Travel and Tourism, Food and Nutrition and Additional Mathematics. The Model United Nations club is in its second year and this year the students will have a chance to participate in a local as well as an international conference. The Electives programme offers over 20 practical courses that help reinforce our focus on developing the ‘whole’ student using a variety of engaging and motivating activities. Our sports programme has gotten off to a great start with many inter-school games scheduled as well as possibilities for participation in regional tournaments. All in all 2015-2016 promises to be an exiting learning adventure and I’m looking forward to this rewarding educational journey together with you.

The rooms were
stylish, cool and very
comfortable as well.
We explored all of
SEDONA, and viewed
many types of rooms
they had and it was fun and entertaining.
We later on took a rest in the Business
Lounge and took pictures of the mira-
culous view of the Inya Lake from the top
of the astonishing building.
Later on we came across the swimming
pool, which was gigantic. If I could have
one wish and more money, I would love to
spend my birthday party at the swimming
pool. After the swimming pool, we stumb-
led upon the large buffet. It had cakes,
sushi, curry, juices and many other deli-
cious dices. The hotel gave us baked goods
as a present. The two-hour trip was educa-
tional, fun and very interesting as well. I
hope we can visit other hotels and location
for educational purposes. (TT- Students Y10)

these contests, 5 students Hein Thant
Sin (1st place), Sabai Myo Min (3rd
place), Kay Thwe, 4th place, Nam
Seung Hyun (10 th place) were
winners of Mathemania Puzzle
Contest and Sabai Myo Min got a
Bronze Medal in SASMO 2016.
This year 25 students from Secondary
participated in MATHEMANIA
2015 PUZZLE CONTESTS which
was held on 6th of September 2015.
Two of our students became winners.
From Year 11.2 Hein Thant Sin
(Ivan) is awarded as the 12th winner
and Sabai Myo Min (Jasmine) is
awarded as the 15th winner during
the award ceremony at Horizon
International School.
Next
month 12 of our
students will be
participating in an International
Canadian Math Contest called
2015 SUN LIFE FINANCIAL

Right now, our upper primary
is doing their basketball unit.
We are learning about the
basic rules and fundamentals
of the game.
Most importantly, the
students are learning
appropriate social skills by
working in various sizes of
teams. This is where they can
demonstrate sportsmanship,
group collaboration and
individual skill development.
Charles Emerson Vernon,
PE Teacher
Sein Sein has been teaching ESL at MIS for several Years and is currently
responsible for the year 11 students. She teaches Reading Comprehension as an
elective. Htet Htet was a teacher’s assistant last year and has been promoted to
ESL teacher this year. She is responsible for the year 8 students. She is also teaching an elective class in English Conversation and Reader’s Theater.
While this is Claire’s first year in ESL, she has been a teacher here at MIS for
the past 3 years. She taught in the primary for three years before joining us in secondary.
James and Harris have both generously taken on ESL classes to help us with
the overload and their talents are welcome! James is from Australia and teaches
8th grade English and 7th grade ESL. (more on page 2)
The students have been presented with three agenda items: School Spirit, Fundraising and
creating a recycling Green Team. These students have many ideas and are full of
energy and enthusiasm! They have formed
committees and have presented this information to the student body. On
September 4th, primary school students assisted with the fundraising efforts of the
Better Tomorrow high school leaders in their
efforts to raise money for Myanmar flood relief. In the primary school over 800,000
kyats were donated, and altogether Better
Tomorrow raised over 1,500 USD. From this
experience, the Primary Student Council
learned what big impact small contributions could make. This effort has motivated the
Primary Student Council to organize more
fundraising activities.
