Hull is the UK City of Culture 2017!

The clock is ticking and the countdown has begun for a year like no other. Rooted in place but global in ambition, this glorious city’s streets, buildings, rivers, parks, bridges and sky will play host to the imagination of the world’s finest artists …. and Hull appeals to the imagination. That means over 1,500 events in just 365 days that are anywhere and everywhere with ballet on the mudbanks, bards on a bombsite, divas in the dry dock, fly dancers on the tidal barrier and a host of acts that blend Hull’s distinctive character, culture and creativity with world-class performance.

But there is no need to wait until then as there is already so much going on across the region ….

“Hull is a hidden gem, and it really needs to be

visited to be appreciated. It’s a really thriving city, with lots of restaurants

and bars, and some beautiful walks and places to visit in the surrounding countryside and coastline. Everyone’s so friendly: as soon as I tell people I was born there, they offer to

buy me a drink.”

Isy Suttie - Comedian and Peep Show star

“I think Hull being the UK City of Culture 2017 will be amazing. It will be so good for the area, I am so excited. You can already see things

are happening.” Katie Anderson, Novartis

“In the once disused warehouse of the city’s Fruit Market district, bars, clubs, galleries, delis and micro-breweries are appearing.”

I moved to Grimsby in 2012 to start a graduate programme with Novartis. Although I am originally from Loughborough I have also lived in Leicester and London to carry out my Master’s Degree and PhD studies.

Originally I was attracted to the area because of the outstanding reputation Novartis has in my field and when I found out I would be relocating ‘up north,’ I was really happy. When I was younger I visited nearby for family holidays and I love the people, everyone is really friendly and welcoming.

For anyone thinking of moving here for work or to study I would definitely recommend it. Before I moved I saw ‘those’ TV shows but living here is not like that at all.

People are friendly and I feel safe here, considerably safer than I did in London. The affordable cost of living is definitely one of the biggest advantages– my rent is a third of what I paid in London! It’s great and means I can get out and enjoy so much more of the things that are going on.

The best event I have been to whilst here was definitely the Lincolnshire Show, it was an amazing day out, I loved the rare breeds of animals on show and all of the local food. The area is full of hidden gems, I would tell people moving here to get out and explore the unique, quirky towns like Market Rasen. If you like being outdoors the Lincolnshire Wolds is amazing for hiking or mountain biking too.

the area is teeming with bars, bistros, waterfront cafés, vintage-inspired tearooms and coffee shops so whether you want trendy & independent, your favourite chain or something quirky and different, you will find it all.

On a sunny day get out and about, explore for a real taste of the area by sampling some of the fabulous local produce. From fresh seafood on the seafront, snapping up locally grown veg at a farmers market to sampling real ales and beers at a local brewery.

Gourmet pubs are a speciality in these parts, so head out to some of the smaller villages for an amazing pub lunch or Sunday roast.

Our shopping centres have all of your favourite eateries including Prezzo, Wok & Go, The Handmade Burger Company, Nandos and Pizza Express.

#great nights out

16thehumber.com

shhhh, want a quieter night out? then visit one of our more traditional pubs that offer great history and affordable real ale & ciders, some of which is brewed right on our door step!

You can find locally brewed ale in pubs as far as Nottingham, Leeds & Bradford but don’t worry you can get a taste locally too at The Yarborough Hunt in Brigg, Willy’s in Cleethorpes, Ashbourne Hotel in Killingholme and Larkins, Newland Avenue Hull.

Armed with a copy of hull’s Ale trail you’ll find Ye Olde White Harte which claims its place in history as it was there in 1642, Sir John Hotham resolved to prevent King Charles I from entering Hull – an act that triggered the English Civil War.

On the cobbled streets of Beverley you can sample cask ales galore at their many micro-breweries. We love The White Horse Inn, known to locals as Nellies, The Angel and the Sun Inn.

Many pubs in Grimsby and Cleethorpes have been presented with the prestigious Campaign For Real Ale (Camra) awards in recognition of their commitment to serving real ales.

We have folk nights in traditional pubs in Beverley, acoustic nights by the sea at Waves in Cleethorpes, art-house cinema & comedy in Hull at Fruit or The Warehouse in Grimsby, open mic nights at Café INDIEpendent in Scunthorpe. Many of our bars regularly promote unsigned bands and local clubs attract big names.Popular venues/ events: AsylumWaves BarFruitCafé INDIEpendentWellyParty in the PinesThe AdelphiHumber Street SeshTrib FestThe Polar BearThe Avenues

some of our very own are rising stars…

Grimsby’s Ella Henderson appeared on the X-Factor in 2012 with her debut single ‘Ghost,’ shooting to number 1 in 2014 – this girl is going far! After playing Glastonbury’s BBC introducing stage in 2013 Scunthorpe’s own Ruen Brothers are now off making music with some of the biggest names in the industry.

I lived in Dublin for a year, I was then assigned to Grimsby working for DFDS, Northern Europe’s largest shipping and logistics company. I knew career wise the move was going to offer some great opportunities, as the industry in the area is huge.

I live in Waltham in a shared house, it is the perfect base for me, it’s relaxed and quiet and really similar to where I lived in Dublin. The best bit about where I live is that it’s only a 10 minute drive to Cleethorpes and Grimsby.

The pubs in Cleethorpes are great for a night out, they offer lots of live, local music. There are so many nice places to eat, the service is really friendly and welcoming. Val’s Italian and The Willow are my favourite places.

If I want to head further afield for a day out other places are so accessible too. I can hop on a train or drive to York, Manchester or Lincoln and be there in no time at all.

my biggest tip is to explore, there aren’t many places where you can have a lecture in the morning, meet friends for coffee by the marina at lunchtime and then decide to spend the afternoon eating chips at the seaside. i do!

I chose the University of Hull for a number of reasons. The exciting city? It really is! The brilliant course? That had something to do with it. The cheap drinks and amazing nightlife? Definitely. Hull is a hidden gem. I have been one of the lucky people to find this out. It has so much to offer. Good shopping, unique boutiques, a whole range of bars and restaurants, clubs to suit every taste in music and a University to be proud of.

The University itself is another world. Covering courses in just about everything, great facilities and even the Uni nightclub has won awards! The Students Union is great too and has really helped me with everything from accommodation to where to look for jobs. We got an award for that too – Student Union of the Year 2012 at the NUS awards!

I came here to study, but being here is great because of everything else I can do when I’m not hitting the books. I can usually be found shopping, eating out, drinking and going to the many clubs Hull has to offer.

Another place I love to spend time is the heaven that is SugarSugar. An old fashioned sweet shop selling everything you could possibly want, just around the corner from Uni. The sweets, staff and the amount of sugar you will consume are sure to brighten up any day!

Hull is a fantastic student city and I’ve got so many friends in the area. I can afford a great flat here and there are lots of big companies so it seems mad to go anywhere else.

Coming to Hull was the best decision I ever made.

our favourite things to

Do are:

For something a tad different, Grimsby Auditorium is great – we’ve seen Jimmy Carr there as well as the Rocky Horror Picture Show. With Hull winning City of Culture 2017 we are getting excited for even more great events to come.

What I would say to a young person or graduate looking at relocating here, is that the career opportunities are vast. At Phillips 66 I‘ve had a variety of roles, been promoted and attended several training courses in the States, the last one was in Florida which was just a blast.

The best kept secret here is without a doubt the National Nature Reserve ‘Donna Nook’, it’s one of the most accessible sites for seeing and photographing seals in the world. Each year, between October and December, you can see hundreds of grey seals on the sandbanks giving birth to their pups – it’s just spectacular!

After completing an undergraduate placement course at Phillips 66 and loving it here, I moved here after graduating and managed to persuade Jo to relocate with me 6 months later. We already call Grimsby home.

We love the green spaces, parks and countryside here, and the fact that we live just beside the seaside with only a 10-15 minute drive to work. Grimsby’s People’s Park is nearby, we enjoy going for a walk there in the evening.

When we moved here we met a lot of friendly, warm people and had some brilliant nights out.

Over summer it feels like there is something on every weekend from air shows, kite festivals, cycling events to carnivals and Cleethorpes has lots of new café bars and shops which definitely don’t disappoint. We love trying the ales at Willy’s micro-brewery on Cleethorpes seafront followed by tucking in to the delicious and huge sharing fish platter at the Captain’s Table.

l.2.mae Debbie Huntley set up independent womanswear clothing label L.2.Mae in 2012 and has since gone on to win one of the 10 designers to watch out for at the Clothes Show Live in December 2013. Her studio is in her hometown in Hull where she also sources local production and creative services.

Daniella Draper As a Central St Martins graduate in Jewellery design, Daniella had two choices - look for a job in London or return to Cleethorpes and turn her passion for jewellery into a thriving business. And thriving it is! She has been featured in Vogue, Elle and the Sunday Times Style Magazine. Plus being worn by the likes of Kate Moss and Chloe Moretz and this is name dropping just a select few!

We have been in Hull for 7 years in total; firstly we came to the University due to the facilities and course. It offered us the opportunity to work in a professional setting while studying.

After we graduated, me and my girlfriend (who I met at Uni) decided to set up our own business, BodyFixed, a Sports Injury Clinic and Pilates Studio. We could have taken it anywhere, but we decided to stay in Hull due to a number of reasons. Hull is a great sporting city, so I immediately knew the people of Hull would be heavily involved in sport and physical activity.

Although our business does take up a lot of our time, we do (still) love seeing what the area has to offer!

Depending on your age, interests, finances and time, we have found there’s all sorts on offer. Personally we love going to the Marina for a great meal or for drinks, or even just a stroll beside the vast amount of water we have here.

For a room with a ‘sea view,’ check out Cleethorpes,

Hornsea, Mablethorpe and Bridlington. There is an array of seaside villages and towns that offer a chance to live by the sea whilst still being in

easy commute of the city and the major businesses here.

For those who don’t want city life but still want everything from restaurants and cafes to shops and services on their
