What is Cloud Computing??

➔ Cloud computing, in simplest terms is a systems architecturemodel for Internet-based computing.

➔ According to a paper published by IEEE Internet Computingin 2008, "Cloud Computing is a paradigm in which

information is permanently stored in servers on the Internetand cached temporarily on clients that include computers,laptops, handhelds, sensors, etc."

➔ The name cloud computing was inspired by the cloud symbolthat's often used to represent the Internet in flow charts anddiagrams.

➔ The goal of cloud computing is to provide easy, scalableaccess to computing resources and IT services.

Cloud Architechture

Cloud architecture, thesystems architecture of the software systemsinvolved in the deliveryof cloud computing,comprises hardware andsoftware. It typicallyinvolves multiple cloudcomponentscommunicating with eachother over application

programming interfaces,usually web services.

Charecteristics of Cloud Coomputing

➔ Agility improves with users able to rapidly and inexpensivelyre-provision technological infrastructure resources.

➔ Cost is claimed to be greatly reduced and capital expenditureis converted to operational expenditure.

➔ Device and location independence enable users to accesssystems using a web browser regardless of their location or what device they are using (e.g., PC, mobile).

➔ Multi-tenancy enables sharing of resources and costs across a

large pool of users.➔ Reliability improves through the use of multiple redundant

sites, which makes cloud computing suitable for businesscontinuity and disaster recovery.

Security typically improves due to centralization of data,increased security-focused resources, etc

Components

Cloud Client :A cloud client consists of computer hardware and/or computer software which relies on cloud computing for application delivery,or which is specifically designed for delivery of cloud services andwhich, in either case, is essentially useless without it.

eg. Web browser, mobile,etc.Cloud Service :A cloud service includes "products, services and solutions that aredelivered and consumed in real-time over the Internet".eg. Online Paying, Online Gaming, etc.

Cloud Application :A cloud application leverages the cloud in software architecture,often eliminating the need to install and run the application on thecustomer's own computer, thus alleviating the burden of softwaremaintenance, ongoing operation, and support.

eg. Skype, Twitter, MS Office Online, etc.

Components

Cloud Platform :The cloud platform facilitates deployment of applications withoutthe cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlyinghardware and software layers.

Cloud Storage :Cloud storage is the delivery of data storage as a service (includingdatabase-like services), often billed on a utility computing basis(eg. per gigabyte per month).eg. Database.

Cloud Infrastruucture :The cloud infrastructure is the delivery of computer infrastructure,typically a platform virtualization environment, as a service.eg. Grid computing, Platform, etc.

Roles Assigned in a Cloud ComputingArchitechture

Provider :A cloud computing provider or cloud computing service

provider owns and operates live cloud computing systems todeliver service to third parties.The barriers of being a provider includes significantly high capital expenditure with billing andmanagement createing some overhead.eg. Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Salesforce.com,GE,etc.

User :A user is a consumer of cloud computing.

Vendor :Cloud computing vendors sell or give products & services thatfacilitate the delivery, adoption and use of cloud computing.Some vendors provide a complete hosting of a deployment

package giving "Inpedendant Software Vendors" the ability tooffer end users applications as SaaS "Software as a Service".eg.RealTech Solutions

Types of Clouds.

Public Cloud :A public cloud sells services to anyone on the Internet.

Private Cloud :A private cloud is a proprietary network or a data center thatsupplies hosted services to a limited number of people.

Hybrid Cloud :When a service provider uses public cloud resources to createtheir private cloud, the result is called a hybrid cloud or virtual

private cloud.

Services

➔ Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involvesdelivering hosted services over the Internet.

➔ A cloud service has three distinct characteristics .

i. It is sold on demand

ii. It is elastic

iii.The service is fully managed by the provider

➔ The cloud services are broadly divided into three categories:Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS),Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

Infrastructure-as-a-service :Its a mean of delivering basic storage and compute capabilitiesas standardized services over the network.eg. Amazon Web Services

Platform-as-a-service :It is defined as a set of software and product developmenttools hosted on the provider's infrastructure. Developers create

applications on the provider's platform over the Internet. PaaS providers may use APIs, website portals or gateway softwareinstalled on the customer's computer.eg. Force.com platform

Software-as-a-service :The vendor supplies the hardware infrastructure, the software

product and interacts with the user through a front end portal.Because the service provider hosts both the application and thedata, the end user is free to use the service from anywhere.eg. Salesforce.com, iTunes store.
