A confession: I’m not much of a green thumb. When we were kids my older sister and I tried to start a vegie patch, and I was devastated when her baby carrots sprouted and

mine didn’t (I’m still not convinced she didn’t sabotage them). And these days my gardening repertoire is limited to forgetting to water the miniature potted cactus that lives on my kitchen windowsill. So I learned a lot in this month’s issue of My Renovation, where we look at the importance of landscaping and offer tips and tricks to get you started. We also have important safety information to consider when you’re painting or dealing with asbestos in the home – that’s on pages 14 and 22.

WORDS JARNA BAUDINETTE

When you’re renovating, it can be easy to focus all your attention on

the interior – mentally knocking down walls, redesigning the kitchen and choosing a colour scheme – without giving much thought to the fact we spend a lot of time outdoors. As a result landscaping is often overlooked, but if done properly it can greatly enhance the overall aesthetic and value of your property.

The exterior of your home is the f rst thing visitors see, and professional landscaping in the front yard will offer a good f rst impression and ref ect the time and care you have taken in renovating the interior. Clever landscaping in the rear garden will create a functional, private space for the whole family to enjoy. Most of us work hard all week and can think of nothing

3 STEPS To The Best Outdoor Home Improvements You Will Ever Make

The easy way to get your timber. Visit Life Time Timbers for the best, quality, price and range.

better than spending days off relaxing in our own backyard, so it is worth committing some of your planning time and budget to achieving the right landscaping.

If you have a sloping block, are designing around a pool or just want to create a highly unique backyard, it is worth engaging a professional landscape architect to design the layout and look of your outdoor spaces. (The same goes for renovators with no gardening experience.)

As well as knowing which plants will suit your project, professionals are experienced in working with issues like aspect, soil type, topography and drainage to create ‘hardscape’ features such as retaining walls, walkways and feature beds (and overseeing the construction of these). If you are after an easy-care garden that requires very little mowing or

pruning, be sure to communicate this to your landscaper as it will affect the plants he or she chooses for the project. Another key element to consider is shade – you may have a covered entertaining area, but if children will be playing in the garden on hot summer days or you have a vegie patch that needs protection from the elements, you may also need additional shelter via a shadesail or some decorative lattice work.

If you are landscaping a small space and are keen to tackle the project yourself, the f rst step is to draw a rough layout of what you want the yard space to look like. Mark in where you want pathways and garden beds to go, and make note of what types of building materials and plants you’d like to use in each area. You’ll f nd plenty of DIY advice from hardware stores or online,

If you are designing your renovation with sustainability in mind, you can easily carry this principle over into your landscaping. Choose native

plants that are well suited to our climate, reducing

the amount of extra water they will need, and opt for

chemical-free mulch and pesticides where you can. Key

to sustainable garden design is to minimise disruption

to the natural environment be preserving the existing

topography and topsoil, and wherever possible use

recycled or sustainably produced timber and other

building materials.

and your local nursery will be able to offer advice on which plants are best suited to your needs and how to care for them.

But if you do have the budget for a professional landscaper, consider his or her expertise can also extend to f nding the right outdoor tradespeople for your project. In much the same way your builder will co-ordinate the plumber, electrician, plasterer and painter-decorator who work on the interior, a professional landscape designer will have good contacts for other services you may need, such as garden suppliers, tree loppers, pool renovators or fencing contractors. If you are time poor and don’t know where to begin, working with someone who can coordinate the whole project may be a cost-effective and hassle-free way to get the garden of your dreams.

Make a splashUnless you like the idea of food-stained

walls, you’ll need to budget for splashback materials in your kitchen renovation. The splashback is the vertical surface behind your sink, oven or cooktop which protects the wall surface from water, oil and other cooking debris. Splashbacks come in a wide range of materials, and the one you choose will depend on your budget and how much cleaning and maintenance you are willing to do.

Laminate and tiles are the most popular choices for the kitchen, as they are economical and suit most colour schemes. Tiled splashbacks look great if you opt for colourful feature tiling or mosaic detail; however, remember the smaller the tile the more grout there is to clean, and white tiles won’t hide any post-cooking grime.

Imagine....never painting again!

Stainless steel……CAN BE USED TO CREATE A SLEEK,

CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN SPLASHBACK.

While they can be quite expensive, glass and stainless steel are both very contemporary choices and offer a sleek, seamless surface. They are hygienic and relatively easy to keep clean (though you will need to watch out for smudges and f ngerprints). Some stockists now manufacture creative glass splashbacks with photo imagery or even backlighting.

Mirrored splashbacks really open up the kitchen and can create a luxury designer feel in even the smallest of spaces. You can buy a range of metallic f nishes, but bear in mind these

are best suited to the spotless housekeeper, and you will need to have them professionally installed to prevent unnecessary wear and tear.

Another option is to continue your bench surface – whether this is laminate, natural stone or even a thin timber veneer – up the wall for a splashback, which creates a uniform look. And if you are renovating on a very tight budget, remember you can have painted splashbacks, but make sure you visit a paint specialist for a variety that can withstand moisture and the necessary cleaning products.

Shower powerYour showerhead is one of the more

unassuming f xtures in the home, so you will be forgiven for not knowing it could also be one of the most high-tech. Over the past few years Australian households have committed to using less and less water, and this has meant a shift to more eff cient tapware and bathroom appliances. While an old-fashioned overhead f xture uses more than 25 litres of water per minute, more advanced showerheads can use as little as seven litres per minute, which is good for the environment – and for your budget.

If you’re renovating go to livinggreener.gov.au and read up on the Water Eff ciency Labels and Standards (WELS) program – you are ideally looking for a showerhead with a three-star rating or higher, which can save you up to 14,000 litres

per year. If you’ve had bad experiences with hotel bathrooms in the past and associate eco-friendly showerheads with a pitiful trickle of water, think again – new technology means water-eff cient f xtures now come in a range of spray options, from soft, rain-like droplets to soothing massage jets. Some showerheads even allow you to switch between the modes by adjusting the nozzle, and others blend air with water in a mixing chamber to give the sensation of greater water pressure but with less waste.

There are still two main styles of showerhead: overhead and shower rails. Shower rails consist of a wall-mounted rail with hose and height-adjustable handset, making them a great option for families, and come in a wide range of designs (some quite futuristic and striking). And while overhead showers are traditionally wall-mounted, there are a growing number of ceiling-mounted rainfall options, which are perfect for creating a luxurious, resort-style space. For a bathroom that is really on trend choose vanity tapware and a bathtub mixer to match.

and medical off ces, carpet tiles have come a long way and are now a great choice for home renovators who like the look of carpet but don’t want the hassle and expense of installing a new wall-to-wall surface. Contemporary carpet tiles have a softer, more plush feel underfoot than the traditional synthetic varieties.

Carpet tiles are a versatile f ooring material that can be installed over an existing f oor, and offers the same look and feel as traditional broadloom carpet. While some varieties are self-adhesive and simply stick to the surface underneath, others are laid in an interlocking modular design and can be used to create decorative patterns and borders simply by

adding a different coloured tile. They are perfect for

carpeting small areas, such as an entryway or staircase landing, and if you are laying only a handful of tiles you should be able to do it yourself without the need for professional installation.

Also consider carpet tiles for rooms that bear high foot traff c or lots of spills – such as a toddler’s bedroom or rumpus room – as you can remove and replace damaged or stained tiles much more quickly and easily than traditional carpets. Carpet tiles can also work well in

indoor/outdoor spaces such as a porch or garage, where you need a durable surface that can absorb moisture and a lot of wear and tear, but still offer some comfort underfoot.

The other classic option for carpeting a small area is to invest in a good-quality statement rug, which will also brighten up dated f oorboards or tiles. Rugs are available in endless shapes, sizes and colours, so you will be able to f nd one that suits any room or colour scheme. Head down to your local f ooring specialist to see what is on offer.

Colour codePainting your own home can be a challenge,

but with the right planning and preparation (and a few weekends worth of labour) you can get the job done. While we always recommend using a professional tradesperson if you feel your skills aren’t up to scratch, if you decide to do your own painting there are a few health and safety tips you should keep in mind.

Firstly, make sure there is adequate ventilation in the room you are painting by opening all the doors and windows. House paint has strong fumes that can be quite overpowering, and if there isn’t enough fresh air coming in you may start to feel dizzy (which could result in some shoddy workmanship). Worse, inhaling paint fumes can cause health problems for you and your family, so always

A few easy tips……WILL ENSURE A SAFE AND STRESS-FREE

PAINTING EXPERIENCE FOR THE HOME RENOVATOR.

read the label and adhere to any safety instructions.

If you are painting high walls or ceilings always wear protective goggles to prevent paint from getting into your eyes, and if ventilation is an issue pick up a cheap disposable face mask from your local paint or hardware store. While it’s almost impossible not to get paint on your skin, wearing long sleeves and pants will help to keep more paint on the walls (remember you will also need to buy drop sheets for the f oor).

If you are concerned about

the environmental impact of your project, speak to a paint specialist about whether a water-based paint – which contains less harmful chemicals and f ammable materials – is suitable for your job. Even water-based paint is poisonous though, so be sure to store it securely out of children’s reach.

If you store paint correctly it should last for years, so keep some on hand for touch-ups. Tap the lid into place with a rubber mallet and store upside down in a cool, dry place to prevent the paint from drying out.

Glass is stylish and gives the illusion of space

Bright sparksWhen browsing the range of available

lighting options for your home, you will most likely come across the term ‘colour temperature’. You should take note of it, because different colour temperatures provide different looks and will affect the ambience of particular rooms in your home.

There is a reasonably complex scientif c explanation for colour temperature, but all the home renovator really needs to know is the higher the colour temperature, the cooler or whiter the light will be. In contrast, a lower colour temperature will provide a softer, warmer illumination. Before you settle on a f nal interior design or colour scheme, think about how you are going to light each space and what kind of illumination you want.

Check the temperature……OF YOUR LIGHTING TO MAKE SURE

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT KIND OF ILLUMINATION FOR THE JOB.

Low colour temperatures are a good choice for rooms with natural materials or earthy tones, as the warm light will accentuate these colours. High colour temperatures at the opposite end of the spectrum will provide a stark, bright light, which may be too harsh for living areas or bedrooms but can be perfect for task-oriented areas of the home, such as a home off ce, or for the kitchen where you want surfaces to look clean and bright.

High colour temperatures also work better in rooms with a lot of glossy white surfaces,

such as kitchens or bathrooms, as the warmer light of low temperatures tends to cast a yellowish glow.

However, in the bathroom you need to weigh this up against the fact that warmer (or even pink-toned) light is more f attering and will cast fewer shadows on the face, which is important for grooming. The bathroom is one of the most important rooms for lighting and it can be tricky to get the balance right, so speak to a specialist about which colour temperatures and bulb types suit your needs.

Safety f rstIf you are renovating a home built before

1990, there is a good chance there may be some asbestos hidden in the building materials. Asbestos is a known carcinogen that was used extensively in Australian home construction up until the late 1980s. There is no safe threshold for asbestos exposure, so it is imperative you exercise the highest levels of caution when demolishing or renovating your home.

Many people mistakenly believe asbestos is found only in old concrete cladding – which was used in around a quarter of new homes built in the 1960s – and is a danger only if you are planning to knock down walls. However, it can also be present in bathroom linings, drainage pipes, roof ng materials, under eaves and even in carpet underlay. In fact, although asbestos was

OF DANGEROUS ASBESTOS EXPOSURE.

banned in Australia in 2003, home renovation is still the most common form of non-occupational exposure, and as symptoms as asbestosis often don’t present until decades later we are likely to see this prevalence rise.

If you are planning any kind of renovation or construction work on an older home you need to contact a qualif ed asbestos inspector, who can look over your property and ascertain whether there is any asbestos present. If there is, you will need to employ a licensed expert to safely remove it – this is one

DIY project you cannot attempt yourself. In Queensland there are strict laws regarding the storage and disposal of asbestos products, so save yourself the hassle and ensure your family’s safety by budgeting for proper removal.

If cost is an issue, obtain quotes from several different asbestos management and removal providers. Some local providers also offer project management services to rebuild after removal, which can help you dispose of asbestos and then move on with your renovation quickly and cost-effectively.

what kinds of plants and maintenance your garden will need, it’s best to be familiar with it before you start gardening.

WaterWhen planting, check how much water each of your plants require, and try to plant similar species in groups. If you have chosen particularly thirsty plants it’s best to give them a good watering every few days, rather than a shallow one every day.

MulchMulch helps minimise weed growth and regulate soil temperature. Keeping your garden well mulched all year will cut down on ongoing maintenance and weeding.

PruningDone correctly, pruning controls your plants’ growth and keeps them healthy and yielding more f owers and fruit. In general, winter pruning promotes growth while summer pruning discourages it, but speak to a nursery specialist about when (and how much) to prune.

COMPOST NATIONA compost bin or pile is a great way to turn your food and green scraps into an organic garden helper. You can buy a specialised bin from a gardening or hardware store, or build your own from recycled timber. Then all you need to do is provide the right ingredients – there are plenty of handy how-to guides online – and let nature do the rest. Using compost in the garden increases the nutrient level of the soil and promotes healthy plant and microbial growth.

TOP TIPThis summer is tipped to be drier than the previous few, so if your lawn is suffering under harsh conditions try to reduce the frequency of your mowing. Longer grass will help to insulate the soil underneath from heavy water loss, which will make a big difference to your lawn at the end of the season.
