Goodwin's Theory'Dancing in the Distraction Factory'

Goodwin distinguishes between three different types of music videos: illustration, amplification and disjuncture.

ILLUSTRATIONThese type of music videos always cut on beat and the images that are shown illustrate the literal meaning or feeling of the lyrics and often just with the band singing and dancing.

For example, Ariana Grande - The Way

AMPLIFICATIONThese type of music videos cut on the beat but also off to emphasise certain features. The images amplify the lyrics and a specific narrative may be used that would not necessarily be picked up from reading the lyrics by them self. Also, the band take on fictional roles in the narrative.

For example, Last Friday Night by Katy Perry

DISJUNCTUREThese type of music videos cut off the beat sometimes, but not always. They usually use images which do not relate to the lyrics are used, sometimes used by bands who are already very well known and established who can afford to take the risk. The band take on an image that is nothing like or the complete opposite of their expected image. For example, Daft

Punk - Da Funk

How would I use it?

I could use Goodwin's theory by following to one of the three types of music videos he discusses. By following illustration I would cut to the beat and frequently show the artist performing, by following amplification I would cut to the beat regularly and I would change between the artist and the narrative and by following disjuncture I would not show the artist.
