All my life I felt that the English classes are boring and that we do not learn
something beneficial, however, taking RHET 102 with Dr. Michael was the most
interesting class ever. At the beginning of the semester I was not able to write an
organized argument and my ideas was not clearly developed. In addition, I had a
problem of having too much information but at the end they do not make sense
3
because I did not connect them right and I also had a problem of writing too long
sentences, however, I am now more capable to control the length of the sentences
and capable to relate all the paragraphs to each other and to only choose the essential
relevant information. However, not only did I learn so much about how to construct
a reasonable and attractive argument paper, but I also learnt how to convey what I
believe on paper in an organized way. What I like the most about this course is its
topics; however the most interesting topic that I was able to express my views Cleary
and make it organized and well developed was the social/economic class topic. My
portfolio is organized in an ascending order meaning that from the first paper that I
have written till the last thing I have done in class. It includes my papers, corrections
of the papers and my presentation. At the end I would like to thank my instructor for
his cooperation and for making us learn how to be well organized. I really would like
to continue my RHET courses with him and I really recommend that all students take
courses with him. This is certainly the best English class I’ve ever taken.

Introduction
In the past, there was a famous quotation about teaching to adults is so hard like
sculpture on stones, so that reflecting that manners and ethics should be learnt at
young age, and that manners and ethics are never too early to be learnt, therefore,
even babies and young children are being taught ethics that discipline their behavior
5
like being honest, saying the truth, apologizing and saying the word "sorry", also
politeness while asking for things and saying "please". If ethics that usually discipline
manners were not learnt, misbehavior would usually be the outcome. College is
usually the stage at which children face life for the first time as an intermediate stage
between childhood and maturity. They are expected to practice their learnt ethics in
college life, which is characterized, by freedom and more independence in their
actions and behaviors. College students are being subjected to different situation
where they have to choose between doing the right thing which could be the hard and
the tough way or choose the easy, fun way to do things and by that they enjoy college
days and have fun all the way so why to bother themselves.
The purpose of the essay is to argue the premise question, which is ethics and its
relation to higher education.
Ethics is usually defined as the basic concepts as well as the fundamental stone and
the basic principles of how human should act in a right way. Ethics includes the
values that should be applied and respected like equality, human rights, and
environment and towards any operating system like college. Since college is the place
where students get the education they need to set them as the politicians, doctors and
future men and women, it is right to respect it and act ethically in order to achieve the
desired outcome from it. In case students think about any situation that they are being
subjected to ethically, there would be no issue, but the case that most student
nowadays, they don’t want to worry about success, they would go for an easy way to
succeed through cheating or through counting on others to do their assignments.
College students and acting according to the required ethics and college code of
ethics, could be so tough according to the situation as what if the easy thing is in front
of me and it would be hard to do what is ethical, or why worry about studying and
staying up late to study while having rest and succeed is an available option.
Arguing an Answer from the Extreme of Functional/Practical
There was a story about a huge tree that fell and blocked the way, so all the traffic
was stopped, the people were complaining, shouting and all were in a hurry, the
police came and tried to deal with the situation but it was in vein, they stayed for
6
hours standing still, until only one boy took the action and went to move the tree, all
people were wondering what he thinks he’s doing, until other boys went with him to
move the tree, they inspired other older people to go and help, till everyone left his
car, and they all went hand by hand and were able to carry the tree away from the
road. Ethics are like the huge tree blocking the streets, whether you go and act
accordingly or you’d rather stand still till others do the difficult job and you pass by
effortless. Same for college students, either they act according to an ethical code or
they do nothing and depend on others to move the block from their way. College
students usually compare between the code of ethics and the behavior exhibited in
different aspects of life around them, as in the political life that is currently in Egypt,
students can detect oppositions easily like Tantawy and the army behavior and
whether they act according to the code of ethics expected from the army in dealing
with the revolutionists and returning security to the country in a manner of using force
and exposing civilians to being shot or with being self controlled and using wisdom.
Arguing an Answer from the Extreme of Human/Personal
There lived a girl called Marie Chantal, she was so beautiful, well raised up by her
poor parents who knew the power of ethics to help her face life's evil side, Marie
Chantal finished high school with high grades which allowed her to study at the
college of her dreams and to become a pediatrician, but here come the real test of life
when she got married and her husband abandoned her, that she had to choose whether
to continue studying or find ways to support and her baby. She was being tested for
her power to keep her ethics and never getting money with illegal ways and cheating
to pass her exams but she rather sold her long hair, her kidney and even her teeth to
get money and support her baby, herself and her studies to follow her dream with
fairness.
Some college students would answer the premise question from the human/ personal
perspective that students should make ethical choices according to situations, but
other in the same situation as Marie Chantal won't let themselves suffer that much,
they would rather drop college and work anything to get money, or abandon their
babies to a family that can support him or get money through illegal ways or depend
on their college friends to cheat. It is an ethical test that she passed through and many
7
of us pass by tests on our daily lives, but sometimes it is the behavior that resulted
from ethics. (Inspired by Victor Hugo from his famous novel “les Miserables”).
Synthesis of Oppositional Extremes
Moreover, answering the premise question of ethics and its relation to the higher
education is so arguing that either the student act according to the situation without
and ethical code to monitor him and set ethical choices on situations, relationships,
and key persons relevant to situations requiring ethical choices, or setting a code of
ethics for how college wants its students to become and set them as the men and
women of the future. So it would be best to set college code of ethics and
nevertheless, some situations should be left for the students to decide how he wants to
act either according to his ethics or act freely. The college code of ethics would
include basic ethics that are needed from students to act while they are in college like
respecting the college environment and its premises, and so on.
Significance:
The importance of arguing this premise question of ethics on a college student like
myself, is so beneficial to interpret several incidence and requests from college that I
thought they might be so tough on student and students need to cross this restrictions
from time to time, as now I get to know that these are not restrictions but they are
ethics that we forgot by time.

6Hi Dr. Gibson according to my little experience in life, everyone sees himself the best and
also sees that he is doing the right thing all the time, no one can judge or criticize him self; So
all what I am trying to say is that of course everybody and I needs an A without working hard,
however I think that I have red the topic so many times and I have gathered plenty of
information from outside sources or from class to answer the premise question as far as I can.
Finally, I hope that I have fulfilled the requirements on MWA1. So I cannot honestly and
justly judge my self, I will leave it to you .

(Definition of gender as a source) read the intro and try to stick it, using outside
source and cite in the work-sited paper and in text citation.
It is so strange that gender codes change over the years, and the perception of
what is expected from a woman to be and how a man should act, has been different by time.
If older people are asked to define gender codes, they would definitely draw a different
picture than the younger generations. However, there are gender codes that could be the
same and never changed by the years, and by every generation some characteristics are
added or removed from the perceived gender codes. Moreover, gender codes differ from
culture to another and from community to another. So, obviously the western description of
gender codes is so much different than this of the Arab region and Middle East. Also, some
gender codes are defined some how in the holy books so we would find people trying to
follow them and act accordingly. Therefore, gender codes are differently perceived from one
person to another due to the external factors that he could have been through it like the
culture and society influence, the education influence so we find illiterate and uneducated
21
societies tend to degrade women somehow and empower the man. However, a woman has
some characteristics that she is expected to behave accordingly to them and some times, if
these characteristics are not shown in a woman, it would be very confusing and sometimes,
this would raise the others to criticize her and the same is applied to the man but it also has
to do with the external and the internal factors that would influence others opinions as well.
According to Middle East and the Arab region, men are expected to have some
physical characteristics that would make much to the masculinity that helps in defining the
gender code in men. These physical characteristics would add to what others expect from a
man to be, like physical strength, as it is related to how the society favors men and
empowers them over women in this region, the loud voice, which gives the man his high self
esteem characteristic and moreover, a man always shows his presence and participation in
discussions using his voice, as well as the hairy look so men usually have beards and
moustaches by which they feel that they are men, hence usually in the Arab region, men
who aren’t hairy enough, the society would create some negative perception about them as
this is not considered as a masculine look. However, men are usually described in this
culture, as courageous, and sometimes they beat women, as well as never like a woman to
raise her voice on them and also, never like a woman to work and spend her earnings on
them as the society rejects the same, though if compared to other Western societies, the
man and the woman are equal and they both share in the expenses of living. Generally, men
usually have special interests that differentiate them from women, like being interested in
cars, football matches, and some sports that even the community has determined somehow
that it is related to men only like karate, cong foe, and other more. Also, Colors are used to
distinguish between the two genders types, so if any stuff is in red, purple and pink colors, so
they definitely point to women stuff and any dark and blank colors usually pointing to men
stuff. Moreover, according to the Arab region, women have special characteristics as well,
22
like being weak, so any physical strength shown by a woman in this society, is always
referred to masculine characteristics, long hair, low voice, and also being taller than men, is
usually disliked, as well as women are disliked to hold high positions, as from these
characteristics and attributes, shows that there is inequity between men and women, and
how this community always favor to give birth to boys than girls, Nevertheless, there are so
many proverbs that favors men than women . also, women in the Arab region are expected
to get married before the age of 25 years, as any delay after this age, would put many
speculations and criticism which draws an attention to that a woman is always favored to be
married, have a family and raise her kids, mindless if she has a career path that many men
would dream of. Women are also seen as an emotional symbol, compared to men, so men
are hardly seen to be crying in any situation but women are always showing their emotions
without any criticism from the society.
Furthermore, the above mentioned attributes, are the general expectations from
how men and women are perceived to be in the Arab region, and usually men and women
abide this criteria and this criteria is also used in judging on how perfectly a man and a
woman are acting according to what it is expected from them as usually this gender codes
are being reinforced by the culture norms and traditions, regardless of what the situation
might be. In the Arab region society, the woman is expected to act according to her gender
code, so she is expected to obey her man and never complain from any mistreatment and/or
violence being subjected to her, as this is the logical extreme that it is perceived by the
society, however if the woman started to take an action towards this, she would be highly
criticized in the society, also if a man found out that his woman is cheating on him, the
society doesn’t judge him but actually defend him in case he killed her and moreover, the
society calls it as an honor case, however, if it was vise versa, women are subjected to death
23
penalties. Therefore, this shows how the gender code that is defined by the society, actually
is used to judge on any behavior by the logical extreme.
However, many men and women in this society are trying to fight this gender codes
being applied on them. Women would be seen nowadays, staying up late at night, in public
places where usually men go, and also a lot of women are heavy smokers and smoking
sheesha, also now we would find that women are trying to break the rules by going after
their dreams, and choosing to be child free after marriage, or stay unmarried seeking a belief
or a career path. So by being an emotional to achieving something and doing their desired
actions, actually is considered to breaking free of the gender codes that the society has
applied on them. Nowadays, many movements are made calling for equity between men
and women and in protecting women rights find an outside source that will support this idea
(women rights) and cite it at the end in a work cited paper and in text citation, but this is
actually against the cultural norms and traditions which have put restrictions and rules upon
which both genders should abide.
Accordingly, both the logic extreme and the emotional extreme are actually present
but they should be not to a high level, but some situations should be acted upon the logic
extreme while others acted upon the emotional extreme. So no violence against women
should be applied and no gender code would embrace the woman to be weak and never
speak for her rights and take an action against any violence against her by her husband, as
well as women should have the right to pursue a career path and not to be deprived from it
just to get married, also no woman is accepted to consider herself as a man as there are
differences between the two genders. Therefore, men should act according to the gender
role and women as well but to an extent and depending on the situation.
24
No matter how men and women are different by nature, but they both have the right to act
upon the situation they are being put into. There should be no preference for any of them
based on culture and traditions, and yet culture norms should be respected in some cases
but not to be followed blindly. Also judgments on any of the two genders should not be
without taking quite a deep investigation in the situation without considering any gender
code obligations.
Include in the conclusion, how to do something to change the culture tradition in order to free women and how could I help women challenge these codes and be free? And how to apply this in my life and how to support women? (This is so important )
Look up the grammar

Gender is widely known by the sex of the person – female or male – however,
its sociological definition goes beyond the biological characteristics that differs men
and women. Gender refers to the different tasks internalized by men and woman; it
refers to how men could control a specific task different from women. These
characteristics usually shaped by the cultural, social, occupation and class. (“WHAT
IS GENDER?”) Even though opposite sex act differently they tend to have partial
similarities due to having the same cultural backgrounds. It is so strange that gender
codes change over the years and has in fact changed as women started to have
different needs and interests, and men as well started to percept things differently. If
older people were asked to define gender codes, they would definitely draw a
different picture than adolescents. However, there are gender codes that could be the
same and passed on to the future generations. These codes that pass on will vary as
different generations have different needs, interests and perspectives. Moreover,
gender codes differ from culture to another and from one community to another. So,

obviously the western description of gender codes is much different than this of the
Arab region and Middle East. Also, some gender codes are defined some how in the
holy books so we would find people trying to follow them and act accordingly.
Therefore, gender codes are differently perceived from one person to another due to
the external factors for example; culture and society have tremendous influence. Also
education has a noticeable influence; so we find illiterate and uneducated societies
tend to degrade women somehow and empower the man and vice versa. However, a
woman has some characteristics that she is expected to abide behave accordingly to
them and sometimes, if these characteristics are not found in a woman, it would be
very disappointing. If the woman lacked these desirable characteristics (what
characteristics) they are usually criticized by others and looked upon. There are also
some standards that women look for in men and they are usually rejected by women if
they lacked these characteristics. How people criticize and value the opposite sex is
influenced by internal factors such as financial and social standards and external
factors such as cultural backgrounds. and sometimes, this would raise the others to
criticize her and the same is applied to the man but it also has to do with the external
and the internal factors that would influence others opinions as well.

man and the woman are equal and they both share in(at) the expenses of living. Generally,
men usually have special interests that differentiate them from women, like being interested
in cars, football matches, and some sports that even the community has determined
somehow that it is related to men only(,forexample) like karate, cong foe, and other more.
Also, Colors are used to distinguish between the two genders types, so if any stuff is in red,
purple and pink colors, so they definitely point to women stuff and any dark and blank colors
usually pointing to men stuff. Moreover, according to the Arab region, women have special
characteristics as well, like being weak, so any physical strength shown by a woman in this
society, is always referred to masculine characteristics, long hair, low voice, and also being
taller than men, is usually disliked, as well as women are disliked to hold high positions, as
from these characteristics and attributes, shows that there is inequity between men and
women, and how this community always favor to give birth to boys than girls. Nevertheless,
there are so many proverbs that favor men than women. Also, women in the Arab region are
expected to get married before the age of 25 years, as any delay after this age, would put
many speculations and criticism which draws an attention to that a woman is always favored
to be married, have a family and raise her kids, mindless if she has a career path that many
men would dream of. Women are also seen as an emotional symbol, compared to men, so
men are hardly seen to be crying in any situation but women are always showing their
emotions without any criticism from the society.
28
Furthermore, the above mentioned attributes, are the general expectations from
how men and women are perceived to be in the Arab region, and usually men and women
abide this criteria and this criteria is also used in judging on how perfectly a man and a
woman are acting according to what it is expected from them as usually this gender codes
are being reinforced by the culture norms and traditions, regardless of what the situation
might be. In the Arab region society, the woman is expected to act according to her gender
code, so she is expected to obey her man and never complain from any mistreatment and/or
violence being subjected to her, as this is the logical extreme that it is perceived by the
society,(;) however, if the woman started to take an action towards this, she would be highly
criticized in the society, also if a man found out that his woman is cheating on him, the
society doesn’t judge him but actually defend him in case he killed her and moreover, the
society calls it as an honor case, however, if it was vise versa, women are subjected to death
penalties. Therefore, this shows how the gender code that is defined by the society, actually
is used to judge on any behavior by the logical extreme.( dah kan pargraph lewa7doo leh
laz2tihom)
However, many men and women in this society are trying to fight this(these) gender
codes being applied on them. Women would be seen nowadays, staying up late at
night, in public places where usually men go, and also a lot of women are heavy
smokers and smoking sheesha. Moreover, also now we would find that women are
trying to break the rules by going after their dreams, and choosing to be child free
after marriage, or stay unmarried seeking a belief or a career path. Women or rather
modern women seek freedom of speech, they are more achieved now to go after their
wants due to several factors; two major factors are the attention given to them by the
media and women having same interests and perspectives encouraging each other to
make a different in the society. So by being an emotional to achieving something and
doing their desired actions, actually is considered to breaking free of the gender codes
29
that the society has applied on them. Nowadays, many movements are made calling
for equity between men and women and in protecting women rights find an outside
source that will support this idea (women rights) and cite it at the end in a work cited
paper and in text citation, but this is actually against the cultural norms and traditions
which have put restrictions and rules upon which both genders should abide.(law
2olna upon women should abide) One latest significant event that empowered women
their involvement in the 25th January Egyptian revolution; women were encouraged to
go to Tahrir Sq. and participate in the revolution and say their opinion. Moreover,
there is a woman called “Bothaina Kamel”, who was encouraged to the extent that she
wanted to elect herself to the presidency (“Egypt’s First Female Presidential
Candidate”) (“Protests raise hope for women's rights in Egypt”).
Accordingly, both the logic extreme and the emotional extreme are actually present
but they should be not to a high level, however, there are some cases where it is essential to
act some (fee 7aga)situations should be acted upon the logic extreme while others acted
upon the emotional extreme. So no violence against women should be applied and no
gender code would embrace the woman to be weak and never speak for her rights and take
an action against any violence against her by her husband, as well as women should have
the right to pursue a career path and not to be deprived from it just to get married, also no
woman is accepted to consider herself as a man as there are differences between the two
genders. Therefore, men should act according to the gender role and women as well but to
an extent and depending on the situation.
No matter how men and women are different by nature, but they both have the right
to act upon the situation they are being put into. There should be no preference for any of
them based on culture and traditions, and yet culture norms should be respected in some
cases but not to be followed blindly. Also judgments on any of the two genders should not
be without taking quite a deep investigation in the situation without considering any gender
30
code obligations. In ancient Egypt women were expected to stay at home and be under the
power of their men, however, women are aware that they’ve been deprived from their
rights and that they should ask for them and that their role should be acknowledged by the
society. The main issue that should be modified is the cultural perspective of women; men
should allow their women to work and have their private live; also they should give them
freedom of speech and to take their opinion into consideration in their decisions whether
privately or in their job. Most important issue that should be resolved is how women are
normally rejected to work if they are married or have children as some women are capable
of working efficiently while being married or having children. From my point of view, these
changes will not occur in a blank of an eye thus, I will start to give women more freedom and
respect which will increase others to follow this strategy. For example; I will accept the idea
that women could be successful in political and engineering fields. I will give them more
space to share their opinion and give them suggestions on how they could gain men’s
respect. Nevertheless, I could establish a group that their goal is to capture value for women
and their rights and this group will include both men and women.
Include in the conclusion, how to do something to change the culture tradition in order to
free women and how could I help women challenge these codes and be free? And how to
apply this in my life and how to support women? (This is so important)

Gender revolution through generations
Gender is widely known by the sex of the person – female or male – however,
its sociological definition goes beyond the biological characteristics that differs men
and women. Gender refers to the different tasks internalized by men and woman; it
refers to how men could control a specific task different from women. These
characteristics usually shaped by the cultural, social, occupation and class (“What is
Gender?”). Even though opposite sex act differently, they tend to have partial
similarities due to having the same cultural backgrounds. It is so strange that gender
codes change over the years and have in fact changed as women started to have
different needs and interests, and men as well started to percept things differently. If
older people were asked to define gender codes, they would definitely draw a
different picture than adolescents. However, there are gender codes that could be the
same and passed on to the future generations. These codes that pass on will vary as
different generations have different needs, interests and perspectives. Moreover,
gender codes differ from culture to another and from one community to another. So,
33
obviously the western description of gender codes is much different than this of the
Arab region and Middle East. Also, some gender codes are defined some how in the
holy books so we would find people trying to follow them and act accordingly.
Therefore, gender codes are differently perceived from one person to another due to
the external factors for example; culture and society have tremendous influence. Also
education has a noticeable influence; so we find illiterate and uneducated societies
tend to degrade women somehow and empower the man. However, a woman has
some characteristics that she is expected to abide to them and sometimes, if these
characteristics are not found in a woman, it would be very disappointing. If the
woman lacked these desirable characteristics, which are loyalty, staying home and
raising children, they will be rejected by the men. They are also expected to respect
their husband and do what they are asked. They are usually criticized by others and
looked upon. There are also some standards that women look for in men and they are
usually rejected by women if they lacked these characteristics. How people criticize
and value the opposite sex is influenced by internal factors such as financial and
social standards and external factors such as cultural backgrounds.
According to Middle East and the Arab region, men are expected to have some
physical characteristics which would appeal to the masculinity that helps in defining the
gender code in men. These physical characteristics would add to what others expect from a
man to be, like physical strength, as it is related to how the society favors men and
empowers them over women in this region, the loud voice, which gives the man his high self
esteem characteristic and moreover, a man always shows his presence and participation in
discussions using his voice, as well as the hairy look; so men usually have beards and
moustaches by which they feel that they are men, hence usually in the Arab region, men
who aren’t hairy enough, the society would create some negative perception about them as
34
this is not considered as a masculine look. However, men are usually described in this
culture, as courageous, and sometimes they beat women, as well as never like a woman to
raise her voice on them and also, never like a woman to work and spend her earnings on
them as the society rejects this idea. Though if compared to other Western societies, the
man and the woman are equal and they both share in the expenses of living. Generally, men
usually have special interests that differentiate them from women, like being interested in

men stuff. Moreover, according to the Arab region, women have special characteristics as

Gender revolution through generations
Gender is widely known by the sex of the person – female or male – however,
its sociological definition goes beyond the biological characteristics that differs men
and women. Gender refers to the different tasks internalized by men and women; it
refers to how men able to control a specific task different from women. These
characteristics had usually shaped by the cultural, social, occupation and class (“What
is Gender?”). Even though opposite sexes act differently, they tend to have partial
similarities due to having the same cultural backgrounds. It is so strange that gender
codes change over the years and have in fact changed as women started to have
different needs and interests, and men as well started to perceive things differently. If
older people were asked to define gender codes, they would definitely draw a
different picture than adolescents. However, there are gender codes that could be the
same and passed on to the future generations. These codes that pass on will vary as
39
different generations have different needs, interests and perspectives. Moreover,
gender codes differ from one culture to another and from one community to another.
So, obviously the Western description of gender codes is much different than that of
the Arab region and Middle East. Also, some gender codes are defined somehow in
holy books so we would find people trying to follow them and act accordingly.
Moreover, gender codes are differently perceived from one person to another due to
the external factors, for example, culture and society have tremendous influence. Also
education has a noticeable influence, so we find illiterate and uneducated societies
tend to degrade women somehow and empower men.
However, a woman has some characteristics that she is expected to abide by
and sometimes, if these characteristics are not found in a woman, it would be very
disappointing to the men who are interested in marrying them. If the woman lacked
these desirable characteristics, which are loyalty, staying home and raising children,
they will be rejected by the men, criticized by others and looked upon. They are also
expected to respect their husbands and do what they are asked. There are also some
standards that women look for in men and they are usually reject the men, who lack
these characteristics, such as being physically able to protect the family and capable
financially to afford the family’s everyday expenditure. From my point of view,
women should choose their husbands depending on other criteria, other than financial
position and how they choose their husbands depend on how they are brought up thus,
there should be programs that raise awareness on how people should bring up their
children. Moreover, the schools offer home etiquette classes to teach girls how to
cook and clean, but they also should offer classes on how girls could be both
successful wife and working woman. How people criticize and value the opposite sex
is influenced by internal factors such as financial and social standards, for example,
40
the man’s occupation, income and which social class does he belong to, and external
factors such as cultural backgrounds.
Gender code doesn’t only affect people when they are mature, it also affects
them as they grow up and the students shape their personality through their interaction
with the opposite sex in school and university. It is believed that girls are more
intelligent than boys in art, theatre, mass communication and marketing; however,
boys are more intellectual in engineering and finance field. Recently girls have proven
this belief wrong and showed that they could be as much intelligent in engineering
and finance as any boy could. Moreover, girls also started to demand an adequate
learning and to go to school as in the past it was not accepted by the society for a girl
to go to a school with boys and learn. Women should have the total right to learn and
take engineering degree or any other degree that is believed to be men’s and
considered for the job just as any other man applying for the job.
According to the Middle East and the Arab region, men are expected to have some
physical characteristics, which would appeal to the masculinity that helps in following the
gender code in men. These physical characteristics would add to what others expect a man
to be, like physical strength, as it is related to how the society favors men and empowers
them over women in this region, the loud voice, which builds up the man’s self esteem
characteristic. Moreover, a man always shows his presence and participation in discussions
using his voice. Men are usually described in this culture as courageous, and sometimes they
beat up women so they could feel that they have full control over their women and it is
totally rejected by the society for a woman to raise her voice. Also, never like a woman to
work and spend her earnings on the family; instead the man should work and take care of
his family financially wise. Though if compared to other Western societies, the man and the
woman are equal and they both share in the expenses of living. According to the Arab
41
region, women have special characteristics as well, like being weak, so if a woman had any
characteristics that doesn’t fit traditional perception of how women should be, they are
degraded by men as they prefer the woman to be housewife and to take care of the
children, clean the house and by the time he arrives home the food should be ready. This
concept should be modified, as women are far more important than to take care of the
house. Women had proven themselves to be successful and independent. They are also
sometimes considered to be more successful than men in specific jobs such as, decorations,
banking and secretaries because they tend to give more attention to little details that is
usually neglected by men, and modernized women also proved that they could work in the
political field. To sum up, previous facts show that there was a huge gap between men and
women that have been amended to some extent. Men should accept the women presence
in work field and value their suggestions, they should not let their ego control them as their
aim should be building a successful society and business not to degrade women and neglect
them.
Also, women in the Arab region are expected to get married before the age of 25
years, however, if a woman stayed unmarried, the Arab society tend to jump into
conclusions, make speculations and criticize her without hearing her reasons for staying
single. The society should stop looking at women as if they are just other objects. women
should be taken more seriously and the community should raise awareness to the whole
community about the importance of having equality between men and women. People in
rural areas have a propensity to degrade women more than people in urban areas due to
mostly being illiterate and believing that men are the only ones who are able of earning
money. Rural residents also favor to have sons than daughters so they could take care of the
family when the father dies. Nevertheless, there are some situations where daughters urge
to learn and move to urban areas and work, and afford the family’s expenses.
42
Furthermore, the above-mentioned attributes are the general expectations from
how men and women are perceived to be in the Arab region, and how it had changed. In the
Arab society, the woman is expected to act according to her gender code, so she is expected
to obey her man and never complain from any mistreatment and/or violence that she was
subjected to, as this is the logical extreme that it is perceived by the society. However, if the
woman started to take an action towards this, she would be highly criticized by the society,
also if a man found out that his woman is cheating on him, the society doesn’t judge him but
actually defend him in case he killed her. Moreover, the society calls it as an honor case;
however, if it was vise versa, women are subjected to death penalties. Therefore, this shows
how the gender code that is defined by the society, actually is used to judge on any behavior
by the logical extreme.
However, many men and women in this society are trying to fight these gender
codes being applied on them. Women would be seen nowadays, staying up late at
night, in public places where usually men go, and also a lot of women are heavy
smokers and smoking sheesha. Moreover, now we would find that women are trying
to not to follow the stereotyped woman by going after their dreams, and choosing to
be child free after marriage, or staying unmarried seeking a belief or a career path.
Currently, women or rather modern women seek freedom of speech, are more
optimistic to go after their wants due to several factors; two major factors are the
attention given to them by the media and women having same interests and
perspectives encouraging each other to make a difference in the society. Furthermore,
in modern society and urban areas, there have been changes that proved that men are
more likely to stay as they are the traditional man – masculine, adventurous,
controlling and powerful – while women less likely to be stereotype. They tend to
change how the globe perceives them. Even in education girls started to participate in
projects, sports such as football and basketball and activities. This development made
43
the society realize that girls could be responsible and independent. Nowadays, many
movements are made calling for equality between men and women and in protecting
women rights, but this is actually against the cultural norms and traditions which have
put restrictions and rules which both genders should respect. One latest significant
event that empowered women was their involvement in the 25th January Egyptian
revolution; women were encouraged to go to Tahrir Sq. and participate in the
revolution and say their opinion. Moreover, there is a woman called “Bothaina

Accordingly, both the logic extreme and the emotional extreme are actually

extreme. So no violence against women should be applied and no gender code would

that the society should modify their perception of women; men should allow their women to

What does it mean for me to be a college student from the perspective of
economic/social class?
One of the major drawbacks that are observed in every society is the classification of
the societies into several economic/social classes. This paper tries to answer the premise
question: what does it mean for me to be a college student from the perspective of
economic/social class? The purpose of the essay is to try to influence other students to think
about when to conform to a code of the social class and when to resist it. Social/economic
class is actually the classification of the society into different classes; socialists and
economists have classified it into three main levels: the worker class, the middle and the
high/rich class. It is a kind of classifying the society according to the social status,
backgrounds and financial status. According to the author of Social Class and Stratification,
she mentioned that there is another form of classification, which is stratifying the social class
depending on skills, educational level, occupation and financial standards. Obviously, similar
people are grouped into one social class and economic status. Thus, in every society we find
these three classifications present in every aspect of our life and, it is there as well in college
47
life (Levine). Generally, students try to belong to their social class or some try to be open to
other students from other classes .
Since college, students are subjected to an open society where students meet
different people of different social classifications and economic status that differentiates
them from one another, people who support sticking to the social class consider that it is the
best thing for students to stick to the class that he/she is familiar with. So by sticking to their
code of social/ economic class their sense of belongingness to the college actually increases
and, their familiarization to college increases through meeting and dealing with people of
the same social and economic class, as usually students who do not meet others like them,
might feel rejected and ignored. As a result, this decreases their persistence to succeed and
study, as they should be. Conversely, group paradigm between students in college usually
indicates that there is a direct sense of belongingness to college and contributes to their
success factors. According to the social identity theory and research on intergroup relations,
in colleges many groups of students are composed of similar students of similar
backgrounds, social and economic class. Since this study shows that people who belong to
the same class usually have common interests and goals, and may seek the same
educational path and join similar colleges (Robinson, Peter & Tajfel).
In fact, sticking to students’ own social and economic class which is highly observed
in colleges, could actually be a discrimination form, as discrimination is belonging to a
certain group of people and rejecting any member who might belong to another group in
the society. Therefore, insensitive actions could actually result from this discrimination, like
any abusive words or actions. Therefore, this could be considered inhumane by many,
because it could negatively influence the students’ self-confidence. Since students are the
creators of the future and if they exhibit this while they are being prepared to face real life,
then definitely, they won’t become effective politicians, responsible men and women of the
future. Concerning what students are exposed to in college, is an intergroup discrimination
48
(Archer & Hutchings, 2000). The formation of groups of common social and economic
similarities actually is a sign that usually social and economic class, genders, race and religion
might be the way that shapes them, and thus, this cannot be encouraged as this might form
further negative implications on the society, because discrimination divisions, conflicts and
disputes may result later on after college (Hesketh). On the other hand, from a different
perspective, some students are open to all classes of the society and treat all people equally,
however this can affect them negatively because some may harm each other, and as a result
there must be some limits in order not to be negatively influenced.
There must be a sense of differentiation between when to exhibit the sense of
belongingness to a certain social and economic class, and when to resist this concept and be
open to the community of different classes and different backgrounds. No one could deny
that there are social differences and that every student feels comfortable by having friends
at college that he/she feels familiar with and thus, aids in their feeling of membership to the
college and contribute to their persistence to succeed in college. Nevertheless, this should
not be the rule of coping to college life as students who feel that others do not welcome
them are affected negatively and it affects their self-esteem. Thus, they exhibit a reaction of
avoidance in the society; these students lack sense of belongingness thus they prefer to be
unsociable and feel discriminated against. Consequently, students should be encouraged to
deal with everyone from different social/economic classes; however, one should form strong
friendships to similar social/economic class, as they could understand his/her interest and
issues more than others; in contrast, it is not necessarily to form close friendships with
different classes.
Life is an open field where students will join work after college and they will
certainly not choose the people at work, but they will deal with them whether they like or
hate them. In addition, in order to be successful afterwards and be effective managers and
leaders, they should know the differences in the society and accept them as well as dealing
49
with everyone equally. Students should allow themselves to be open to everyone and accept
the presence of differences in the society according to their social and economic class. Now I
could strongly claim that I should not be biased to any kind of people and that I have to
accept similar and different people and to accept other points of view in order to be
successful in my life. Another learnt lesson from that argument is that I should put some
boundaries while interacting with people of different social/economic classes in order not be
affected adversely by their behavior.

First of all, as u all may have noticed, students tend to judge each other depending on
the social class they belong to, which most of the time have a negative impact on the
students.
Before introducing the reasons for why students follow the social code and what its
effect on other students is I will first introduce the definition of Social/economic code,
it is the classification of the society into different classes, usually into 3 main levels:
the worker class, the middle and the high/rich class. In other words, it is
differentiating people according to their financial standards, occupation, skills and
education.

In college, students are exposed to an environment full of students from various
social classes and due to the normal college life they have to deal with each other and
try to cope to the usual college environment.
However, there are some Students, who follow the social code, as from their point of
view it is for their own benefit to be friends with students from the same economic
standards because this will increase their sense of belongingness and self of esteem
due to dealing with students with the same concepts, background and beliefs.

Sticking to students’ own social and economic class has been considered as a form of
intergroup discrimination.
Intergroup Discrimination is defined as belonging to a certain group of people and
rejecting any member who might belong to other groups in the society. In college
Students, who belongs to different class are often rejected by other groups and
neglected.
Sometimes insensitive actions could actually result from this discrimination, it could
be in the form of any abuse by words or actions, and so, following a certain group
may be considered by many as inhumane, especially in students as they are the
creators of the future and if they exhibit this while they are being prepared to face real

life, then definitely, they won’t compose successful politicians, responsible men and
women of the future.

Other than having long term effect, it will affect the students’ self esteem and it will
make them shy, introvert and might even have serious psychological effect.

For example most of you know the popular series Gossip girl and as many of u
remember how Blair and her group treated Dan and his sister jenny just because they
belonged to different social class even though they were successful to join the rich
school. And many of you also remember what jenny did to gain the acceptance of
blair as she was the queen of the group. This proves that students, who are under peer
pressure, are ready to do anything to gain access to other groups and sometimes it
might end up badly like in jenny’s case.
Other than Gossip girl series there have been enormous number of movies, series and
even songs calling for equality between students regardless their social standards.
