My Noble Brothers,

I would normally write a message about all the fun things that I’ve had the privilege to attend as your Potentate. But this time I’m going to relate a problem that faces your Divan every year.

That is the problem of Nobles with delinquent dues. As of my writing this there are 120 Nobles that haven’t paid their 2021 dues. This totals $10,135 of debt the temple is carrying. Dues are still $85.00 a year which is only a little more than 23 cents a day. A pretty good bargain to be a member of the world’s greatest philanthropy.

The dues for 2021 were to be paid prior to January 1 to keep you in good standing as a Shriner. If you are behind in your dues, you can’t be an officer in a club, participate as a Shriner in parades and attend other Shrine functions.

We dislike having to call our Brothers to ask about dues but if your having problems lets us know and we’ll try and help you out.

We do have the auto-payment system available to

you to assist with paying your dues. This system is very easy to use, with it starting by contacting Pat or Amy in the office at telephone number: 608-833-6343 and they will help you with getting setup in the program. You have some choices as to how you want to pay. One option is to pay the entire amount due at one time. Second option is to pay the amount in four payments. Third option is to pay the amount over the entire year. Fourth option is to pay

the amount in two payments. These options use either your checking account, savings account, or credit card to make the payments.

We love all our Nobles and want to see everyone having fun everywhere.

All that being said let’s have “Fun in ‘21”

Mark Jerdee, Potentate

Page 4: My Noble Brothers,

Greetings All,

Summer is almost here and the parade schedules are starting to fill up. I am so happy to see that Zor is getting back to normal and the activities are back on.

In the past two months, Linda and I have had the opportunity to be at several of the Clubs and Units get-togethers and have had a very enjoyable time. We started out at the Wausauken Shriners Annual Potentates Party, which is nothing less than a great time and the party to be at. Over 80 Nobles, Lady’s, and guest were present and we even brought in three new Shriners. We were also present at the Masons, Shriners, Family, and Friends party in Tomah and enjoyed the first Duck Race. The Spring Ceremonial was a one-of-a-kind ceremonial, outdoors setting with a Hillbilly theme, glad we didn’t miss it.

I am sure by now you are asking yourself, whats the point of the stories? Well, let me tell you. More and more Clubs and Units are having events coming up and the rest of the membership just might like to know and maybe even join in all the Fun with you. Remember the Goal of the year is ‘Zor Fun In 21’. The Zephyr is the one means of communications that goes out to every Member, Widow, Candidate, and Appendant

Body. The word gets out to everyone, which could turn an OK event to a Great one.

Not only do we want to help you spread the word, but after the event, send us a story and pictures to share with everyone so that maybe the next years event will be even bigger. We need to be there for each other and ‘Get back to the Fun in 21’.

Remember, submitting an article for the Zephyr is as easy as [email protected].

After the Valley 60 steak fry, many of the attendee’s took a tour of the House of Shadows, a haunted house in Sparta raising money for the Boys and Girls Clubs. As the pictures are the proof, looks like they all had a good time.

Page 8: My Noble Brothers,

The active Zor Roadrunners are looking for a strong parade season regardless of concerns over the pandemic. The famous parade unit’s first meeting of the season was held on Monday, April 19th at the New Richmond American Legion.

In keeping with the rules Mike Kastens signed the members in attendance and checked their insurance so they were cleared to drive this year. Treasurer Jack Thomas collected the dues necessary for the drivers to participate.

The meeting was chaired by Roadrunners Captain Randy Pfab, who urged all members to participate this coming year. Many towns are holding off a commitment to hold parades due to concerns over the pandemic, but two towns have already made a decision to hold theirs. Baldwin is set for June 12 while Woodville is scheduled for May 15th.

There is more involved with this famous parade unit than just hopping on a cart and driving. The unit’s routines are choreographed for hours before they are parade ready. This, plus many hours of planning and practice makes their performances smooth and polished. Their first practice is scheduled for Monday, April 26 at 6 pm at the New Richmond American Legion. Those who have not signed up to drive are asked to do so that evening before practice. They also need to show proof of insurance so they are covered by Zor insurance.

At the conclusion of the meeting current Zor Potentate Mark Jerdee led other members of the Divan in the “Cold Sands” ceremony to welcome Austin Mahanke of River Falls as the newest Noble of the Mystic Shrine. He was assisted by Zor Divan Marshal Al Coenen of Tomah and High Priest and Profit Roger Keller of New Richmond.

Past Potentate Barry Ausen gave a report on this year’s Vidalia onions. He said, “If all goes as planned the onions should be here by late in the afternoon of April 30th.” Nobles of the

St. Croix Valley Shrine Club is in the process of pre-sales of the sweet onions. If you have not signed up for your onions, do so right away.

The process of deciding the new location of the Zor Shrine Temple is now underway. It was decided that the Wisconsin Masonic Temple will not be considered and that another location more centrally located in the state is being considered. A survey of membership with key questions for the nobility have been sent out. The response of which will be used to aid in the final decision.

The UW - River Falls Homecoming is set for October 2nd. The Shrine Club plans for their usual high visibility celebration and parade. Watch the papers for details.

Members of the Zor Divan attended the Roadrunners meeting and participated in a Cold Sands ceremony. Pictured left to right are. UNCORKED! AGAIN!Sparta area Shriners popped their tops again on Saturday

May 8 at the Foxhole Pub in Sparta. Over 60 guests sampled beer, wine, seltzers, spirits, cheese, crackers, and more for 3 hours as a fundraiser for Zor. Illustrious Sir Mark Jerdee and Lady Sharon, along with their Divan, helped pour and run the event. While this was going on, the local Zor Cornhole tournament was happening. Congrats to our winners, Nobles Rodney and Jacob LeBlanc.

In addition to the sampling, lots of goodies went out the door from the silent auction, raffle tickets, and entrance raffle ticket. The event raised almost $4,000.

This event doubled the attendance and amount raised over last year’s event. Another Shriners Uncorked will be held at the Foxhole on Saturday September 18. Mark your calendars! Watch the Zephyr for more details.

Members of the St. Croix Valley Shrine Club board of directors met on Monday April 5th to lay out plans for the coming year. President Ed Swenson of River Falls chaired the meeting. Along with the usual business meeting duties the group outlined a very aggressive set of plans.

Among those plans were special appreciation of Shrine Honored ladies. The Nobles will make arrangements for specially grown potted plants to be delivered to the ladies. This was done before and proved to be well received.

Stag night, the club’s annual election of officers, will be held at the River’s Edge in Somerset on September 15th.

Recent fundraising proceeds from the club’s Valentine and St. Patrick’s Day party will go to fund child seats for the Shriner’s Healthcare van based Eau Claire.

In the report on Onion Sales, Dan Green stepped up to assist Jerry Hauschildt with onions in Baldwin, while Rick Swan volunteered to assist Jim Hines in Ellsworth and Prescott.

That ever popular Zor Roadrunners, under the command of Randy Phab, will make appearances again in area parades. Among the towns scheduled so far are Baldwin, Woodville and New Richmond. Clayton is pending and Chetek is being reviewed because the date poses possible conflicts with available drivers. There will be a Road Runners meeting and practice on April 19th at the New Richmond Legion. Drivers are reminded to bring their drivers license and insurance information as Mike Kastens will get everyone registered on site. Rain date will be April 26.

It was reported that the annual little East -West Shrine game will again be held with the potentates dinner on Oct. 1st and the oasis October 2nd prior to the game at the American Legion Club on North Main in River Falls. The dinner with the team is under review in light of the Covid restrictions.

Divan member Roger Keller urged all Nobles to submit the opinion survey published in the Zor Zephyr to offer guidance to Zor Shrine on the possible relocation of the Temple.

Wausauken Shriners

POTENTATES PARTY

Wausauken Shriners do it again, hosting their annual Potentate Party. Over 80 Nobles, Ladies and guest were present to partake in the festivities, and fun was had by all.

A special thanks goes out to Ill. Sir Steve Peterson, PP, and his Lady Mary Ellen for again overseeing the event to ensure that it maintains the high standards that has been set over the many years, making this an event to attend. Congratulations to all involved for a wonderful time.

The morning started with a short drive and tour of the new Wausau’s Forest Masonic Lodge building for all that was interested. After Lunch the Nobles were busy with a quarterly meeting and Cold Sands where 3 new Nobles were brought into Zor. The Wausauken Shriners also used that time to present to Ill. Sir Barry Ausen, PP, his Chiefs Headdress and Indian Name, Chief Vidalia. While the Nobles were in their meetings, the Ladies enjoyed a luncheon at ‘The Bar’, complete with entertainment from Noble Nathan Randall, an Elvis tribute artist.

The banquet, as always, was a wonderful meal, wise words from our Potentate Ill. Sir Mark Jerdee, exchange of gifts, and of course the raffle, which had many items to choose from. Throughout the evening, we enjoyed the live entertainment provided by Max Koepke, a young Senior in High School getting ready to graduate and go on to College. Best wishes Max.

To finish the day in the true Zor Fun-In-21 fashion, the hospitality room was open for everyone to get reacquainted and even some practice for the Zor Cornhole tournament.

A good time was had by all that attended. Can’t wait for next year to get here so we can do it all over again.

St Croix Valley Shrine Club receives report on the Shriners Children’s Board of GovernorsBy Milt Helmer

In his report to the St. Croix Valley Shriners Board of Directors on Monday April 5th, Bob Hering of the Shriners Children’s Board of Governors told the Nobles assembled that Shriner’s Children’s Twin Cities (TCC) continues to be heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hering said “the pandemic has caused an unprecedented disruption to normal operating procedures.”

Hering said, “Historically, 89% of the TCC patient population comes from outside the Twin Cities metropolitan area with 71%of the patient population outside of Minnesota.” At the time of his report, it will be more than one year since we visited an outreach location at the provider clinic. “The inability to reach these patients in our seven-state catchment area is of great concern,” said Hering. Contributing factors are many patient’s inability to travel; and the business travel restrictions to protect our associates and patients.

Outreach and Telehealth updates

Hering noted “We are waiting for letters that outline plans to return to our Outreach Clinics.” They completed the process of updating with Boys Town and Omaha. “Completed vaccine process will be required for those SH-TC employees going on outreach. The travel bands remain in effect through the end of the month; however, it may be extended.

SC-TC at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare:

TCC continues to function with most surgery services at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare location. Hering added “All Twin Cities Child Life camps and programs are canceled until further notice.” The TCC Prom will be pushed back to fall of this year.

Save these dates!

The Gala is set for September 10th one of three options pending.

The long awaited Open House and Groundbreaking ceremony for the Shriners Children’s Twin Cities is being planned for September 11th, the day after the Gala.

On May 15th, Zor held its Summer Ceremonial at the home of Ill. Sir Mark and Lady Sharon Jerdee in Wilton, WI . There were three candidates, Richard Wayne, Harold Bone, and John Van Toll, who joined the caravan that day and had the unique experience of being part of a very non-traditional Ceremonial. Thinking outside of the box and in keeping with the theme of “Fun in ’21, the Ritual Divan team from LaCrosse conducted the degree in a more casual attire. Blue jeans and bibbed overalls were the uniform of the day for the cast, candidates, and attendees. The turn out for the day was a little slimmer that was hoped for, but all present, seem to enjoy themselves and didn’t seem to mind the damp cool air.

Following the ceremonial thirteen Nobles and nine ladies became Cousins in Glacier Ridge #183 Hillbilly Clan. Even though it was chilly, everyone had a great time!

The day ended with the Fezzing of the new Nobles.

Ritual Divan and Candidates:

Front Row (L-R new Noble John Van Toll, new Noble Richard Wayne, Nobles Todd Wohlert, and Nathan Randall

Back Row (L-R) Nobles Kevin Greeno, Ill. Sir Mark Jerdee, Noble Franz Wiggert, new Noble Harold Bone, Zor Marshall, Noble Al Coenen, and Nobles Jason Robertson, Jim DeVoe, and Jim Kielley.

Chaplain Karl Gant arrived in his Amish Uber and the day could begin. The Candidates being lead on their Journey.

Zor Roadrunners hold their first practice of the parade season

The Shrine members of the Zor Roadrunners are shown after a full practice session on Monday April 26 at the New Richmond American Legion. Their first performance will be in Woodville on May 15th.

Pictured left to right: Carl Gaulke, Jerry Wilkens, St Croix Valley Shrine Club President Ed Swenson, RR Capt Randy Pfab, Doug Hoffman, Mike Kastens, Roger Keller, Ron Davis, Larry Wiegand, Ty Behr, Jim Wolfe, Austin Mahanke, and Past Potentate Barry Ausen.

What a time we have had, no circus and no Clown Party. Wait, that is not right; the clown party was just postponed until a later date. The Madison Clowns are pleased to announce that the new date for the 2021 Clown Potentate party has been set. We will see just what kind of a clown our Potentate Mark Jardee really is on Saturday, September 25th at the Esquire Club on Sherman Ave, in Madison.

We will be doing everything the same as it has always been, this will be a taste of the new normal along with the way it always was. We will have our door prize/raffle with all proceeds going to the Shrine Red Sneaker Fund. The entertainment, of course will be the making up of a new Clown. This year we had a lot of extra time to make our plans.

We will be served a family style meal with all the extras along with a chef choice dessert. The cost will be $ 25.00 per person. There will be a coupon for making your reservations in the next issue of the Zephyr. Now all we need is for you to mark your calendar for a fun night with the Clowns. Remember everyone is a clown; some of us just dress the part.

Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

The months of April and May have been extremely busy ones for the Divan and the clubs. We were able to fez several new Nobles. In the past two months we have fezzed 8 plus new Nobles, that is a great start to gaining new members! Please welcome these new Nobles to your clubs and have them get involved with your clubs and units.

Also, the parade season has started, now the real fun starts for the clubs and units! I am hoping that we see these new Nobles participate in the clubs and unit activities! If your clubs or units have any pictures of having fun participating in any parades or other functions, please send them in to included in the Zephyr! This is a great tool to help gain new members.

We still have several Nobles who have not paid their 2021 dues, this is unfortunate for them as they are NOT considered members of ZOR Shrine. These Nobles cannot participate in any club or unit activities until they have paid their dues. This means no participation in parades, dinners, fundraising events, voting on issues that come before the clubs, units, and the Temple. These Nobles are not covered by the insurance for parades or other fundraising events. All dues are to be paid prior to January 1st of each year. I am not trying to be the bearer of bad news, but this is part of the by-laws of both the Imperial and ZOR.

If you have not paid your dues, please do so as soon as possible. The last thing you need is to be rushing to pay your dues at the end of the year to avoid being suspended for nonpayment. As I have wrote before, we do have the auto-payment system available to you to assist with paying your dues. This system is very easy to use, with it starting by contacting Pat or Amy in the office at telephone number: 608-833-6343 and they will help you with getting set-up in the program. You have some choices as to how you want to pay.

One option is to pay the entire amount due at one time. Second option is to pay the amount in four payments. Third option is to pay the amount over the entire year. Fourth option is to pay the amount in two payments. These options use either your checking account, savings account, or credit card to make the payments.

Now with the restrictions being lifted by the Grand Lodge, we should be out there assisting our respective Lodges in getting new Master Masons who will make great Shriners! When we help our Blue Lodges gain members, we are also working on gaining possible new members for our great fraternities.

If any club wishes to have a Cold Sands performed at their meeting please for a candidate let me know and I will pass the information on to Ill Sir Mark and the Divan to make sure they are available to assist with performing the Cold Sands Imitation. As Ill. Sir Mark has said in the past “Let us know about any Cold Sands Initiations and we will be there.”

Without new members our great fraternity will die off as the current Nobles pass away. Membership is everyone’s job to grow our fraternity!

In closing, I wish each and everyone of you great health! Remember everyday is a great day to be a Shriner!

Fraternally yours,~ Mike Kastens

Mehara Shrine Club has Cold Sands

On May 5th, Mehara Shrine club held cold sands for two New candidates, Matthew Mitchell, and Richard William Wayne. This was a very special day for Matthew, who had his 92-year-old grandfather, Noble Richard (Dick) Mitchell as not only his top line signer, but present to Fez him. Thank you to all the Divan support to make it happen so quickly. Congratulations and welcome aboard!

Page 27: My Noble Brothers,

Greetings Nobles & Ladies!

It was nice to see everyone in Wausau for the Quarterly meeting, Potentate Party, and Cold Sands, where we brought in 3 new Nobles to Zor . Welcome Aboard!

I hope everyone had a chance to fill out the questionnaire from the relocation committee that was in the last zephyr, to help them and the Divan determine the near and long term direction that Zor may take once the existing Temple is sold.

Now that summer is getting closer and things are starting to loosen up a bit.

Clubs & Units are starting to do a few more events and parades after a long year for all of us due to the pandemic or Covid.

There was a great turn out at the Foxhole for the Shriners Uncorked Beer, wine, and Spirits tasting event. It’s great to see the familiar faces and especially all the New Ones. The next Shriner’s uncorked is September 18th so mark your calendars .

Congratulations to Rodney & Jacob LaBlanc, winners of the corn hole tournament. We will be well represented at the Imperial Session for the corn hole tournament. Imperial Session will be in Houston Texas July 4th- 8th 2021.

I would like to thank everyone who made it to the Mehara Shrine Club for the great night of honoring the Ladies & widows of our brothers. Especially the Divan, that helped make the cold sands come together so quickly for our New Nobles Matthew Mitchell and Richard William Wayne.

I Hope all the mother’s had an enjoyable Mother’s Day! M.S.A. will be in Sioux city Iowa on August 11-14 th.

So I Love this quote from English Writer Jon Heywood.
