1VERTICAL CHOREOGRAPHY

Is it possible to design a landscape project mainly from parametric design methodology which combines models making and site test?

Page 7: my master design projects
Page 8: my master design projects

In order to mediate between artificiality and nature, the design has worked on making or-ganic design models and producing a new type of vertical garden – ‘vertical choreography’. This involves defining a new design methodol-ogy of parametric design. So that continuous modelling is not merely seen as a plug-in for design portfolio, but is integral to the genera-tion of the design and the day to day activities of the building itself. That is, by embedding concept, site conditions and organic perfor-mances within structure and convoluted cir-culation processes, modelling plays as a main expression approach of whole design and con-struction.

Started from the 1900’s, the designers prefer to show their design by drawings especially in china and other developing country while modelling is descend to dispensable part. How-ever my research is going to explore the possi-bility to achieve a design mainly by modelling. A core component is a connecting generation of models built for concept formulation, tech-niques exploration, site combination and final construction, which works corroboratively and successively to support the whole project. I located my research on the design expression approach which is fixed since industrial revo-lution.

What's more, modelling is used as the ar-tificial, mechanical connotations of the term pattern; the word ‘choreography’ is a way to express a design of flow. It allowed us to work focus on the spatial condition and the material.

Modelling Technique 3: Grid Shell

Modelling Technique 1: Tension Membrane

From model, the main property of tension membrane is infinite division.

The varying origami model is made from one simple piece of paper, one square modular and easy methods. The dynamic origami will help the concept model being instability.

At first, we all regard grid shell as the main structural support in concept model. However, what grid shell can do is much more than that. As shown in pictures, although it isn’t as dy-namic as origami model, it can form amazing shape.

New Modular Model Layers

The model is also used as the planting pot. So flowers can be moved on the model.

Except normal decorative flowers, vegetables can also be grown. First choice is the fast-growing vegetables, like bean

sprouts. People can eat directly.

Second choice is other veg-etables which may need a rela-tively long period to grow. All of them would be provided to students.

New Function: Vertical Garden

Coconut fibre is the com-mon-seen lightest base mate-rial. Every modular model is the container or pot for base material.

Normal mud can be mixed with other light material.

Fertilizer is another neces-sary material. As the container is covered with silk stocking, Solid fertilizer is better than other.

Inner Objects: Base Material for Grow-ing Plants

As the site condition is been considered, the dynamic origami model is hard to release in “Introversion” solution.

However, the same concept is transformed to pipes which can form hundreds of shapes. Then use the wooden support to fix the shape.

How would a landscape project show the unique features of the site?

La Pavilion ---- Gone With The Wind 风中摇摆Chengwei Zhu

At Dockland, a red structure sites in public, that is made up of a series of aluminum strands, to show the performance of wind. Strips of aluminum are shaped and fixed on the site allowed to swing and move in the wind which is one of the features of Dockland. The

idea generates from a two-day’s experiment. After that two days, it developed by mapping and modeling. The color comes from the red wall on the site because the designer wants to merge some original impression with his design.

3AGRO - FRAGMENT

HOW CAN FRAGMENTARY SPACES IN MELBOURNE CBD BE USED IN NEW URBAN FARMLAND DESIGN FOR RE-CONNECTION THE AGRICULTURE TO THE CITY LIFE, WHICH HELPS P E O P L E R E D I S C O V E R T H E I R FAMILIAR CITY AND FOOD?

Page 23: my master design projects
Page 24: my master design projects

City, as a growing element worldwide, lost in economic slowdown after 2008 and its impact has swept the globe following the globaliza-tion. Within this context, as a landscape archi-tect, how to design the urban landscape when there is both opportunities and challenges? The design seeks to create a new design strategy to urban through utilization urban fragmentary spaces. There are a lot of fragmented spaces in city block available for landscape regardless of the density and scale of city. Those fragmentary spaces can be looked as the virgin territory. Agro-fragment is going to transform the frag-mentary spaces from isolation to sociable ur-ban farmland, which will then change the city façade by reconnecting the food and common life.

Food, as Carolyn Steel said, once shaped our honourable cities is abandoned by the city itself. ‘One of the great ironies of modern food systems is that they’ve made the very thing they prom-ised to make easier much harder.’ As the econo-my slowdown proves the failure of our modern model of city development, the re-connection to food is a viable option. Cuba has shown its potentiality. How will agriculture reshape our concrete forest? The first design method is pro-ductive urban farmland. From one single pro-duction to supporting the whole city’s consume,

there are many plans I have tried to create pro-ductive farmland in Melbourne CBD. However, like the city, the urban farm should also become multifunctional. Agro-fragment is a new model of urban farmland, which aims to innovate the city from the perspective of survivance as well as aesthetics, enjoyment, sociality and etc. The citizens would rediscover their city and food by this project.

Farmland Urbanism ---- Farm Shire 田 郡Chengwei Zhu, Angus Durkin, Liang Shan

Farmland urbanism is an urban design meth-odology that combines high density housing and productive agricultural landscapes. The design process has been based around an on-going exchange of knowledge and personal ex-perience from both China and Australia. Farm shire is the result of applying the model to the small semi-urban town of Lara in Victoria. The master plan has developed through the consideration of several simplistic design prin-ciples which we have used to spatially organize the site.

This methodology enables the concept to be applied to another place in another state or country.

The design employs several systematic aspects that facilitate the construction and expansion of the development over a period of time. These include: a modular architecture system, which responds to an economic framework and pre-vailing population growth, additional, we have implemented an agricultural programme which is based on natural Ecosystem cycles.

We have developed a 20 year farming cycle that combines peri-ods of different agricultural types, including 8 years of nursery plant-ing, 3 years of livestock, and 3 years of grain or vegetable crops.

Basic on the investigation of high density apartment precedents, the building has small physically footprint building for more area to plant. The other advantage of the building is the density growing from 2L 8 APARTMENTS 16 PEO-PLE to 4L 16A 32P and 8L 32A 64P.
