COLOUR The overall colour scheme used as a house style for each front cover of Q

magazine is inclusive of red, white, black and then an extra colour like blue, orange oryellow. The colours used give the magazine an identity as they are similar each issue. The

colours used stand out as they are bold and juxtapose against their backgrounds so are

easily seen. For example red or yellow contrasts with a dark background so you can easily

see the text. The main colours are red and white. White is the most common colour for the

mast head, the headline and the kickers. The colour is continuously used in these areas to

highlight their importance as this is these are usually the first things people read.

FONTS The font appears to be the same throughout the magazine cover however inparts the font is in italic. The same font appears to be used within each of the magazine

    covers.

STYLEIn each front cover, the main image is large and covers the majority of the page.

The shots range from mid to close up and show off the features of the artist/band. In each

shot the feature artist(s) are looking directly into the camera to show their importance. Also

when bands are shown, the main singer is usually placed in the middle, much as though in

concert, to show importance. The images give an invitational aspect due to eye contact.

The shot type is varied depending on the artist, for example heavy metal rock band may

be captured wearing black makeup and may be pulling faces or show a whole body shot

whereas a shot of a soloist, for example Cheryl Cole, make be close up and invitational

displaying her with her hair and make up done staring directly into the camera almost

    seductively.

USE OF SPACE Mostly the most important information is displayed on the left third. The effect is used to enhance the most important information when on display in the

shop so he customer can see what the magazine features and what its about. The

main image is central mostly to create a dominating effect. The mast head can be

found at the top left of the page within every front cover and this does not change. The

headlines position varies depending on the image type. For example a close up image

of just the artists face means that the headline will not be in the centre as it will cover

their face. The feature with Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine) has theheading at the stop of the page. This shot is not often used however and the heading

is mostly central or at times slightly to the left of the page. The layout is good because

the majority of the writing surrounds the main image therefore does not over-write it.

The kickers and cover lines are mainly to the middle left and right of the page. No

dead space or white space is used on any of the covers.

CONCLUDE The reason I think it is designed the way it is , is to enhance theimportance of each subject. The main image is important therefore is large and

central. A house style has been made to give the magazine a sense of identity as

each issue is similarly designed. The use of colours and fonts are simple and do not

overpower the image. The colours are used so that they show up clearly against their

background. The font is the same throughout because it looks cleaner and clearer this

way giving it a stylish feel.
