My Life Sounds Like This

Due Dates: Paper—Monday, January 30 @ midnight; CD Response— Wednesday, February 1

 We all have favorite songs that mean something to us. This assignment asks you to explore musicselections that are meaningful to you and consider why they are important. After you have chosen

six to eight songs, write at least one paragraph per song explaining what each one reveals about 

 you, another person, or a certain time in your life.

Consider using specific memories, experiences, and/or examples as a way to make a connection

between the importance of the song and your life. Paragraphs and song selections should build on

one another with an established structure. Use introductions or conclusions as necessary to create a 

cohesive essay. Be sure to include the names of the songs and the artists within the essay.

Requirements

  A minimum of two typed, double-spaced pages explaining selected songs (which you willgive to me)

  One CD burned with each of your favorite songs (which you will give to someone else)

  Twelve-point font 

   A title other than “My Life Sounds Like This” 

Purpose of Assignment 

  To introduce you to the writing process

  To help you write to discover, to see writing as a method of inquiry 

  Start the semester with something fun

 What You’ll Be Graded On 

   A considered exploration of why your songs are important to you

   An explanation of how each song reveals something about you or an experience that is rich

in detail

  Clean, consistent writing 

  Inclusion of artist and title for each song 

   A thoughtful, articulate response to someone else’s CD 

Suggested Steps for Writing This Paper

  Freewrite your thoughts and feelings in your writing notebook while/after listening to each

song   Connect your songs to memories, times, places, etc.

  Keep in mind the writing process that we discuss in class as well as the one that feels natural

to you

  Consider taking this paper to the Writing Center. They can give you some early suggestions

that may help with your paper.
