GETTING ABOUT

Octopus card

This extremely versatile electronic stored-value card is

accepted on most public transport (as well as a host of

retailers). Pick one up at a customer service centre in an

MTR station.

MTR

The city's subway system is extensive, efficient and easy

to use. You can purchase tickets from machines at

stations with cash, or use an Octopus card. Tourist

passes are also available.

Taxi

Taxi's are plentiful and can be hailed on the street

(except for restricted areas). All are metered. Red taxis

can operate almost everywhere in Hong Kong; green

taxis are restricted to the New Territories; and blue taxis

to Lantau Island. All taxis can travel to and from the

airport and Hong Kong Disneyland.

Bus

Almost all of Hong Kong is covered by bus routes.

Destination information, stop names and fares are

displayed in English at bus stops. Pay the exact fare

when you board at the front door. Octopus cards are

accepted. Hop off at the back.

Tram

Trams either run east or west along the north corridor of

Hong Kong Island. Destinations are written on the front.

Board at the back and pay the exact fare of HK$2.30

when you alight at the front. Octopus cards are accepted.

Ferries

Ferries are a scenic way to get from Hong Kong Island to

Kowloon and the Outlying Islands. The main piers are at

Central and in Tsim Sha Tsui. All have destinations and

fares clearly displayed in English.

Peak Tram

The Peak Tram is the fastest (7 mins) way to get to The

Peak. It operates daily at 10-15 minute intervals from

7am to midnight. Octopus cards are accepted.

Changing money

Currency exchange counters at the airport are open from

early morning until late at night and many located within

the city stay open into the evening.

ATMs

ATMS are widespread, operate 24 hours and accept

most international cards.

Credit cards

International credit cards are widely accepted. Look for

signs, at business place entrances.

Traveller's cheques

Traveller's cheques are accepted by most leading banks

and hotels.

Public Hygiene

Some of the city’s public hygiene rules and laws include:

Eating and drinking are not allowed on most public

transport.

Hong Kong has fixed penalty fines of $1500 for

littering or spitting. See what constitutes a littering

offence here.

Public washrooms and hand sanitizers can be found

at most tourist sites and in shopping malls. Get a full

STAYING CONNECTED

Mobile phones

Most major mobile phone systems operate in Hong

Kong. (Watch out for roaming charges!). Prepaid calling

cards and mobile data prepaid SIM cards can be

purchased from major convenient stores. (See below)

with loads of mobile data, unlimited local calls, credit for

international calls and texts, lots of useful Hong Kong

travel info and special discounts and offers to make your

Free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available at the airport and at Wi-Fi

hotspots in all MTR stations. Also, GovWiFi provides free

Wi-Fi in hundreds of locations and facilities across the

city. Hong Kong Broadband and Y5Zone provide free

citywide Wi-Fi. And you can browse the Hong Kong

Tourism Board (HKTB) website and download HKTB

apps for free at PCCW Wi-Fi hotspots, which can be

found in many cafes, convenience stores and PCCW
