Poster:

Mise-en-scene (setting, colours, costume, make-up, lighting, composition):

A conventional composition has been used for the main image of the (main) characters as the female character is (who the film is based around) is in the centre and her two true loves are either side of her to signify her forced choice. The composition suggests the female character has an angel and devil on either shoulder and she must work out which one is which before it’s too late.

The background of the image is light blue with clouds signifying a blue sky and connoting the freedom of choice the female character has. This blue sky is appealing to a teenage target audience as it is reminiscent of the many options that teenagers have.

This makes the film more appealing to the audience as the female character has to make a decision just like them and maybe watching it will help the audience make their own choices.

This image also connotes the idea of the female power fantasy as the woman in the middle is the one with all the power – as she is one with a choice of men. This is appealing to the target audience of teenage females as it empowers them and encourages them that they do have power and can use it; it effectively gives them confidence in themselves as they know they have choices. This female power fantasy is also seen through the size of the font of the main actress’ name “Alyssa Milano” is the largest font on the poster. This reinforces her powerful character in the movie and gives females confidence.

Conventions of form:

The listing of the actor’s names at the top of the poster is

conventional for a film poster. They are listed at the top of the poster so that they are the first thing the audience see when they look at the poster (due to the route of the eye). This means the audience will see which actors are in the film and immediately know who’s in the film and what kind of genre it is – as actors tend to stick to one or two genres; from this, the audience will know if they want to watch the film. This listing is unconventional in that the names are all in lower-case letters whereas most rom-com film posters have actor’s names in all capitals. These names have been written in lower-case to appeal to a younger target audience of teenagers and makes it appealing to them because texting is mainly done in lower-case. Below are some examples of rom-com film posters that have all upper-case names at the top of the poster.

This is conventional for a film poster as it lists all the production companies, actors and people who helped to produce the film as well as showing the target audience for the film and the PG suggestion. This is used to give all the people involved in the film credit and also allows the audience to identify who made the film. As well as this, the PG suggestions tells the audience who this film is suitable for.

Conventions of genre:

This title is conventional as the word “girlfriend’s” is in bold and a different colour to the other words in the title. This is conventional with rom-com titles and serves to emphasise certain words within the title. The font is sans serif which is also conventional of rom-com’s as it makes the title easy to read and appealing to the teenage target audience as they do not have to work very hard to read it. Some other sans-serif and using different colours in the title rom-com poster examples are below:

The interspersed pink colour of the text feminises the title and also the names – even the names of the male actors. This acts to appeal to the audience as the pink colour makes the poster relatable to them as it is feminine.

Website:

This is the front page of the website http://www.mygirlfriendsboyfriend.com/ and it is a romantic comedy. It focused on woman who has a static love life until two guys come along at once and she has to decide which one is her one true love. This website links to the poster as the poster is used as the background image of the entire website.

This synopsis gives the audience more insight into the narrative of the movie and relates to the trailer as that also gives the narrative of the film but through a selection of scenes from the movie. Though, similarly to this synopsis, the scenes of the trailer are interspersed with text pages such as below:

The website reinforces the narrative’s idea of choice through the choice of buttons on the site. These buttons allow you to do different but the choice is still there. The idea of choosing is also present when you click ‘Watch the MOVIE’ as

the choices of where to watch it come up – like below:

Trailer:

These intruding images of the production companies for the trailer are the first images the audience see. This is because the audience may know the company by the films they make and know they like them so, immediately, they’ll know they will like this film because it’s by a production company they like the films of.

Camerawork:

This establishing shot conveys the use of the everyday use of the café in the film. This allows the audience to become comfortable with the setting and to build an idea of what sort characters they are going to meet/see. This is especially effective in this trailer as this establishing is the first shot of the trailer (that isn’t production company names) that we see.

Mid shots are conventionally used in rom-com’s and this is no exception. The mid shots show the characters expressions and also their body language. This also helps to show the relationship between characters, as it shows their reactions.

This crane shot has been used to make the scene look romantic. This has also been done through low-key lighting and the implication that the characters are looking at the stars. This is appealing to the audience as it shows some of the romance in the film and makes females want to watch so that they too – as well as the main female character – can be swept off their feet.

Mise-en-scene:

Several settings have been used in this trailer to represent the film as diverse and make the film seem more interesting. Some of these settings include: a cafe, a bar (signified through the man’s choice of drink which is connoted to be alcoholic through the use of a lime), home settings (i.e. kitchens, living rooms) and also mini-golf courses. The low-key lighting of many of the settings, as shown above, are made that way so as to appeal to a younger female target audience as young people have an active social life and so, no doubt, go out drinking late at night.

Costuming is very casual in this trailer and appeals to the target audience as the character wear clothes the audience would tend to wear; making them more relatable for the audience. Even though this is the case with most of the costuming, the two guys the female is dating, both wear very different costumes. The writer wears the typically creative and kind-of slummy top, jeans, jacketed hoodie and trainers whereas the other guy wears a suit. This creates an obvious difference between the two men for the audience so they can immediately identify which of the two men it is. This is made even more clear in the poster and website of this film as the two men are literally being compared together as they are standing with a beautiful woman in between them.

Editing:

These shot/reverse shots show the different relationships between different characters and act to keep the audience interested in the trailer as they can see people’s reactions clearer.

These images illustrate when the male character shoots the golf ball into the bush the female character says a sarcastic “Dreamy” and he replies “That’s right” from over his shoulder.

In this scene the male character says “Hey wait, if I need some inspiration, can I maybe call you and get some?” and the female character misconstrues what he means and he laughs and clarifies “Inspiration. I meant get some inspiration”. This is the joke the trailer ends on and it is appealing and effective for the audience as it is the first things they will remember about the trailer/film and will be more likely to watch it if they remember laughing at the trailer.

This comedy element in the trailer appeals to the target audience as it makes them laugh and want to watch the film.

This is conventional of the trailer form and this relates to the poster as that also lists the actors in the film. A few differences are that the names of the actors on the poster are at the top so that people read them first whereas this is at the end of the trailer and also all the actors are given screen time with this names in the trailer whereas on the poster “Carol Kane” and “Beau Bridges” are in tiny boxes under the main image and have their names in tiny underneath them.
