My future research plans
One of the courses I have done so far at the Faculty of Political Science was Governing &Politics in Romania in 19thand 2thcentury! It was fascinating for me" from the minute
that" in the very first day of class" the teacher recommended us to forget whatever we
learnt during high school a#out Romanian history" #ecause we will #e $enlightened% so tosay" from now on!
It was a shocing moment when we were taught a#out 'olocaust and Romania(s
im)lication in it! I had no )revious nowledge a#out 'olocaust ha))ening in Romania!*e were never taught something lie that at school" nor could it #e found on a history
#oo in high school or elementary school+ or" when we learnt a#out the maing of Great
Romania" which was a rather )olitical move" than a strong real desire from Romanians
across ,ar)athian-.anu#ian s)ace! /very new course was a challenge #ecause every timewe learnt something very new and it seemed shocing at that time" #ecause everything
we new so far was very different!
*e had to read .inu Giurescu and Ste)hen Fisher Galati $Romania" a historic
)ers)ective% and Irina 0iveeanu $,ultural Politics in Great Romania% for the
th
wee ofstudy" when we discussed a#out the maing of Great Romania! 3hese were the reading
assignments that we had and that were eye-o)ening for me" at least" at that time! I reada#out how the )eo)le from 3ransylvania )layed a ma4or role in the )rocess of nation-
#uilding and state-#uilding and also how the actual reforms were done after the
unification of the country!3he #oo that I lied the most was one of the #oos I had chosen to read for a )ro4ect that
I had to do during that class! It was entitled $,orru)tion &.emocracy! Political
institutions" Processes and ,orru)tion in 3ransition States in /ast-,entral /uro)e and in
the former Soviet 5nion%" written #y 3rang 6! .uc and it descri#es" during its )ages" howthe former-communist states )aved their roads toward democracy" how the transition
ha))ened in each of the mem#er-states of *arsaw Pact! 3he author e7)lains that thisstates had a wrong start from the #eginning" #ecause they made room for corru)tion inthe new democratic structures" they #asically ado)ted the western way of maing )olitics
without having a )ro)er #acground for it!
3homas ,arothers" on the other hand" states that countries lie Romania did a wonderful4o# in transitioning to democracy! 'e notices that democracy wors very well in such a
state and the transition was a success!
I have chosen this su#4ect for study #ecause it is my moral duty" as a Romanian citien to
now as much as it is )ossi#le a#out my country(s history and it is also my duty" as astudent as)iring to influence the Romanian )olitical scene in a cou)le of years" to #e
well-informed and to now history" to ee) others from re)eating the same mistaes from
the )ast!In conclusion" I #elieve that Government & Politics in Romania was one of my favorite
courses so far and my future research )lans will definitely include cultivating myself with
as many #oos regarding national history as )ossi#le! 8ecause we have to realie thatsuccess #elongs to )eo)le who read" es)ecially" to )eo)le who read good!
