Olhão

Olhão is located in Portugal , southern Algarve. Olhão is a major port and actually the largest fishing port in the Algarve. It is full of character with Moorish-style houses,an influence from the commercial links with Africa. . Although Olhão only really became a town of note in the 19th century, it was first mentioned in 1378.

Famous monuments

The "caíque" was one of the boats used by Olhão’s fishermen in high seas since the eighteenth century. Olhão has become one of the most important ports in the Algarve and the country. With regard to kayak fishing " Bom Sucesso " , this is an integral part of a glorious past that much Olhão honor. When , after the first Napoleonic invasion , the Portuguese court took refuge in Brazil , was in Olhão that erupted in June 1808, the insurgency against the intruders .And to bring the Prince Regent John the good news of the expulsion of the French , he left Olhão, on July 6, 1808 , the cacique " Bom Sucesso " .

“Praceta do Agadir”

The name of this small square , located next to the High School of Olhão and close to the Av . Bernardino da Silva , due to the twinning of the cities of Olhão and Agadir in the Kingdom of Morocco in 1987. Here we can enjoy a nice green space , wide , with terraces and a visitable ornamental fountain with illuminated water games . A place to enjoy socializing and relaxing moments !

“Capela do senhor dos afiltos”

Baroque building and located in the rear of the Mother Church, consists of two floors , with the top one loggia . This chapel boasts the center a tile panel with the Crucifixion of Christ. Many people , both residents and visitors, attracted by the candles do not go out by day or night , there are your prayers . This chapel became a place of worship for thousands of people and , as such , is also a must for all visitors .Facing the wide and bustling Avenida da República, this is great starting point to discover the city and local businesses .
