CHRIST EPISCOPkL CHURCHJt
Christ Church had its beginnin' I when Gen. Oglethorpe came to St.Simons in 1736 to build the fort a d town of Frederica. He broughtwith the soldiers and settlers an 0 ained clergyman of the Church ofEngland, the Rev. Charles Wesley, n order that the colony might havethe services of the church from it l start. The Board of Trustees or-dered a chapel to be built and had t 1ree hundred acres of land set asidefor the support of the minister and the church. (It is on some of thatland that Christ Church stands tod y.)
The first building in which Di ine Services were held was a com-bination chapel and storehouse bull within the town of Frederica. Itwas well furnished with Bibles, estments, altar linens, communionvessels, and copies of the Book of ommon Prayer, sent by the Societyfor the Propagation of the Gospel, a imissionary organization whose pur-pose was the establishment and matntenance of the Church of Englandin the colonies.
j
'
The Society for the Propagati of the Gos el sent the Rev. JohnWesley, also an ordained clergyman
'
of the Churc~ ofEngland, to Savan-nah; and after Charles left Frederi a, John came to the Island for fiveshort visits. However, neither of he brothers was able to adjust hischurchmanship to fit the religious' eeds of the colonist, so both soonreturned to England. (It was af 'r their return that John had theheart-warming experience at Alderhte which led to the Wesleyan re-vival and the founding of the Meth~dist Church.)
The S. P. G. continued to send ~lergymen to Frederica, the last onebeing the Rev. Bartholomew Zoaberbuhler, who served the entire colonyof Georgia from 1743-66. Parish pounds were established during hisministry, in 1758.
FoiIowing the Revolution, the ongregations which had been orga-nized and served by clergymen of th" Church of England joined togetherto form the Protestant Episcopal Ch 'rch of the United States, continuingthe use of the Book of Common Bra er with certain minor changes, thuskeeping the liturgy inherited from t, e Church of England almost intact.
In 1808 the parish was organ' 'ed. Wardens and vestrymen wereelected and incorporated by the G orgia L'egislature as the "Wardensand Vestry of Christ Church, Fred rica." They were granted one hun-dred acres and three town lots for he building and maintenance of thechurch, part of the original glebe 1a ds which had been set aside by theBoard of TrU!;lteesfor the colony for religious purposes. The first churchwas erected on this property in 1 20.
The rector of Christ Church, F Iderica, together with the rectors ofChrist Church, Savannah, and St. P ul's Augusta, organized the primaryconvention of the Diocese of Georgi. It was to Christ Church, Frederi-ca, that theRt. Rev. Stephen Elliot, D. D., made his first official visi-tation as the first bishop of the D ' cese
The parsih was served regularl by resident rectors until the WarBetween the States, and the church ,building enlarged during that time. But during the War, the building's almost totally destroyed by Fed-eral troops. I
In 1884 ,the remains of the 0 church were torn down, and thepresent building erected on its site I y the Rev. A. G. P. Dodge, Jr., inmemory of his first wife, Ellen Adl\l Phelps Dodge.
