My essay about Drugs !
Drugs have been a part of our culture since the middle of the last century.
Popularized in the 1960s by music and mass media, they invade all aspects of
society. Moreover, in society we face a number of problems. We face many different
problems from ocean to ocean, but the problem that causes the most problems these
days are drugs. With drugs come many different problems. Drugs cause bad decision
making, committing crime, and gets people very addicted to bad habits.
Drugs in the present day are causing people to make bad choices and bad decisions.
Drugs aren’t necessarily making people do things that aren’t right, but make it so that
people don’t think straight. When people don’t think straight they tend to make wrong
choices. When people make wrong choices it usually puts people around them in
danger, which isn’t good to have citizens endanger ever.Let alone, Drug addiction is
a chronic disease affecting the brain, and just about everyone is different. Drugs
affect different people in different ways. One person can take and abuse drugs,
yet neverbecome addicted, while another merely has one experience and
is immediately hooked . What is more, they think drugs are a solution. But eventually,
the drugs become the problem. The consequences of drug use are always worse
than the problem one is trying to solve with them.
So from what we have seen in the introduction. We can say that drugs are a problem
that should not be treated as an easy phenomenon. Therefore, we thought that it’s
important to make the society refresh its memory and remember how bad drugs
addiction can be, even if we knew that it’s an over dealt problem or phenomenon.
more importantly, let them aware of the new and Updated drugs and its effects on
both the person and the society. Therefore, we will divide this topic to four important
parts:
Ø Types/kinds of drugs
Ø Its causes
Ø Its effects
Ø Its solutions
vKinds
Although most people know that there are various illicit substances that are abused
throughout the world very few are aware that these drugs fall in different categories.
Some of these drugs have a combination of characteristics that cut across the three
categories. It is important for every person to be aware of these illicit drugs in order to
lower the risk of substance abuse. Additionally awareness about these drugs may
also help to identify and help individuals who are addicted to these substances. The
following are various types of illegal drugs:
Ø Stimulants
These drugs elevate mood; heighten alertness, increase energy and feelings of well
being. The drugs give the user a rush of adrenalin which is closely followed by a
crash. When used for an extended period of time they cause irritability, paranoia,
apathy, restlessness depression and fidgeting which is characterized by constant
body movement. Coffee and caffeine are some of the most widely used stimulants.
∑ Ecstasy
∑ Cocaine∑ Methamphetamine (Also called “Crystal Meth” or just “Meth)∑ Amphetamines∑ Methylphenidate
Ø Depressants
These form a major group among the various types of illegal drugs. Depressants
simply depress the nervous system. They reduce pain, anxiety, stress and fear which
puts the person at ease. The downside of these drugs is that they are highly
addictive and often result in reduced ability to fear, anxiety or stress. Alcohol is the
most popularly known and abused depressant. Although it can cause symptoms that
are similar to hallucinogens and stimulants but it is still considered as a depressant.
∑ Marijuana∑ Barbiturates∑ Tranquilizers (For example: Ketamine a.k.a. “Special K”)∑ Heroin∑ Morphine and codeine are commonly used by physicians to alleviate acute
condition, however they still cause addiction and are often abused illegally.
Ø Inhalants
Inhalants are commonly found most in workplaces or homes. Although most people
do not think of them as drugs these substances have mild-altering properties when
inhaled. They aren’t illegal, though it is important to have them on this list because
they are frequently abused in the same way that illegal drugs are.
∑ Markers∑ Glues∑ Hair sprays∑ Cleaning fluids∑ Paint thinner∑ Whippets (N2O cartridges)
Ø Cannabinoids
These are chemical compounds that activate cannabinoid receptors in the human
body. They include endocannabinoids that are naturally produced by animals and
human beings. Cannabinoids include:
∑ Phytocannabinoids which occur in the cannabis plant∑ Endogenous cannabinoids produced by human and animal bodies∑ Synthetic cannabinoids produced in laboratories
Ø Opioids
Opiods work by binding to opiod receptors; these are found in the gastrointestinal
tract and the central nervous system. Receptors in these organs mediate the
negative and beneficial effects of the opioids. Opioids include:
∑ Buprenorphine∑ Kratom∑ Tramadol∑ Desomorphine a.k.a. Krokodil
Ø Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens cause alternations in thought, mood or perception. Hallucinogens
have a very rich history and have been used by various cultures around the world to
induce mystical or religious experiences.
Users of these types of illegal drugs experience misperceptions, out of body
experiences, complete fantasy and distortion of reality as well as a cocktail of
emotions that change rapidly. People who are addicted to the drugs may experience
a good or bad trip. A bad trip is simply an anxiety or panic attack which can result in
violent behavior or mental breakdown. Hallucinogens include:
∑ LSD∑ Ketamine∑ Dimenhydrinate∑ Nitrous oxide∑ Madrake∑ Diphenhydramine∑ PCP∑ Angel’s trumpet∑ Jimson weed∑ Salvia Divinorum – Legal in most places, but is undergoing scrutiny and has
been outlawed in some states in the U.S.
Ecstasy and marijuana have characteristics that are associated with the above
category. These two drugs are part of the illicit substances that cut across several
categories. While marijuana does not cause severe hallucination or the adrenalin
rush associated with stimulants it also doesn’t induce complete relaxation that is
characterized by depressants.
vCauses
People take drugs because they want to change something about their lives.
Here are some of the reasons young people have given for taking drugs:
∑ To fit in∑ To escape or relax∑ To relieve boredom∑ To seem grown up∑ To rebel∑ To experiment
They think drugs are a solution. But eventually, the drugs become the problem.
Difficult as it may be to face one’s problems, the consequences of drug use are
always worse than the problem one is trying to solve with them. The real answer is to
get the facts and not to take drugs in the first place.
when we asked some people in Oujda streets about what makes people especially
adults addicted to drugs, most of them answer that family situation/problems is the
first push factor to drugs addiction, and it contains poverty, divorce, an alcoholic or
drug addicted parent, etc.
Bad companions/friends; is the second push factor that makes people especially
young people addicted to drugs.
So many young people take drugs as a way to skip their life and live their own life
that drugs create for them, but they put themselves in a biggest problem and instead
of getting the life they are looking toward to, it drives them to look for more and never
get enough nor get back to the reality, so instead of staying in their own situation and
look for real solutions they infect others in many ways, at first they do anything to own
money for buying drugs, second the feeling high that drugs give them, it makes the
user feel superior then others no matter who they are. And also they see some
hallucination specially when they take drugs at their first time and they see everything
in a different way of normal people so they do anything either it is good or bad.
These are the causes that many people take as push factors for their being addicted
to, when they were trying to ran from their problems they find themselves in the
biggest one it is the addiction of drugs.
vEffects
Addiction is a complex disorder characterized by compulsive drug use. While each
drug produces different physical effects, all abused substances share one thing in
common: repeated use can alter the way the brain looks and functions.
∑ Taking a recreational drug causes a surge in levels of dopamine in your brain, which trigger feelings of pleasure. Your brain remembers these feelings and wants them repeated.
∑ If you become addicted, the substance takes on the same significance as other survival behaviors, such as eating and drinking.
∑ Changes in your brain interfere with your ability to think clearly, exercise good judgment, control your behavior, and feel normal without drugs.
∑ Whether you’re addicted to inhalants, heroin, Xanax, speed, or Vicodin, the uncontrollable craving to use grows more important than anything else, including family, friends, career, and even your own health and happiness.
∑ The urge to use is so strong that your mind finds many ways to deny or rationalize the addiction. You may drastically underestimate the quantity of drugs you’re taking, how much it impacts your life, and the level of control you have over your drug use.
Very clear, explicit laws on drug abuse exist in every nation. Some nations have very
hard laws and sentences. You can spend a lifetime in jail, or many years including
huge fines that can potentially damage your finances for life. Other things that will
follow include:
Criminal Record:
You will have a criminal record on your file, and will not look good any times you have
a case with authorities.
Career and employment:
Many employers and jobs will turn you down because you have a criminal record,
and no employer wants criminals around.
Licenses:
Having a criminal record can prevent a person from getting many sorts of licenses;
for example, licenses for driving a taxi or running a liquor store.
Travel:
Many countries require that people traveling there get a visa.
These countries can refuse to give a person a visa who has a criminal record.
Social Status:
Many individuals and groups of people discriminate against someone with a criminal
record. A criminal record can affect your standing in the community, the attitudes of
your co-workers and neighbors and your relationships with your family and friends.
vSolutions
Ø PERSONAL COMMITMENT
Many drug addicts live in deep denial about their problem. They refuse to admit they
have an addiction even as it costs them friends, family and employment. Only when
the addict can look himself in the mirror and confront the extent of his drug use can
he get help. Acknowledging the addiction and vowing to fight it are only part of the
equation, however. Because drug addiction can result in physical cravings, it
becomes more than simply a matter of willpower to stop. The commitment to
recovery thus constitutes a vital first step, but only a first step.
Ø Detox
Once the addict is ready to confront his problem, he then needs to get the drugs out
of his body as quickly and safely as possible. Detox should always take place under
the care of a physician, who can monitor the addict and make sure his vital signs stay
healthy. The exact method of detox depends on the addict and the extent of his
condition. In many cases, he should detox in a qualified facility where he can be
watched by professionals. In some cases, he may be able to detox at home under
the care of friends or family members. Doctors may also prescribe certain
medication, such as methodone, to address the symptoms of withdrawal, or may
advocate a slow, gradual withdrawal from the drug over time. Because there are so
many variables, it’s vital to consult a doctor before beginning detox.
Ø One Day at a Time
Once the drugs are out of the addict’s system, the next step comes in controlling the
cravings and working to repair the damage drugs have done. Counseling and self-
help groups are available to talk about the addict’s issues and teach new ways of
coping. Many experts recommend staying away from high risk situations–people or
locations which may tempt the addict into relapsing–and to find healthy pastimes to
fill the hole left by drugs. Former addicts refer to themselves as « recovering » for a
reason. The process never ends, but with time and a committed effort, it can get
better.
