B.K.S. Iyengar Turns 93 Today: 9 Awesome Quotes

B.K.S. Iyengar turns 93 today! Here are nine of my favorite quotes from the legendary yogi:

    1. "Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical

disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open."

    2. "Penetration of our mind is our goal, but in the beginning to set things in motion, there is no substitute for

    sweat."

    3. "The highest point of yesterday should be the lowest point of today."

    4. "Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured."

    5. "Yoga, an ancient but perfect science, deals with the evolution of humanity. This evolution includes all

aspects of one's being, from bodily health to self-realization. Yoga means union -- the union of body with

consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitudein day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one's actions."

    6. "When you inhale, you are taking the strength from God. When you exhale, it represents the service you

    are giving to the world."

    7. "Yoga is a light, which once lit, will never dim. The better your practice, the brighter the flame."

    8. "Illuminated emancipation, freedom, unalloyed and untainted bliss await you, but you have to choose to

embark on the Inward Journey to discover it."

    9. "Change is not something that we should fear. Rather, it is something that we should welcome. For

without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move

forward to become the person they're meant to be."

    What's your favorite Iyengar quote?

    B.K.S. Iyengars Quotes:

"Yoga is like music. The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind and the harmonyof the soul, create the symphony of Life."

"Nose is for breathing, mouth is for eating. If you breathe through your mouth, I willfeed you through your nose"

"The Body is My Temple and The Asanas are My Prayers".

    Alignment leads to enlightenment!

God: Hello... Did you call me?Me: Called you? No.. who is this?God: This is GOD. I heard your prayers. So I thought I will chat.

Me: I do pray. Just makes me feel good. I am actually busy now. I amin the midst of something..God: What are you busy at?

Me: Don't know. But I cant find free time. Life has become hectic. It's rush hour all the time.God: Sure. Activity gets you busy. But productivity gets youresults. Activity consumes time. Productivity frees it.

Me: I understand. But I still cant figure it out.. By the way, I wasnot expecting YOU to buzz me on instant messaging chat.God: Well I wanted to resolve your fight for time, by giving yousome clarity. In this net era, I wanted to reach you throughthe medium you are comfortable with.

Me: Tell me, why has life become complicated now?God: Stop analyzing life. Just live it. Analysis is what makes it complicated.

Me: why are we then constantly unhappy?God: Your today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday. You are worrying because you are analyzing. Worrying has become yourhabit. That's why you are not happy..

Me: But how can we not worry when there is so much uncertainty?

  • 7/27/2019 My Collection of Anecdotes Sept 2011onwards

    3/26

God: Uncertainty is inevitable, but worrying is optional.

Me: But then, there is so much pain due to uncertainty..God: Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.

Me: If suffering is optional, why do good people always suffer?God: Diamond cannot be polished without friction. Gold cannot bepurified without fire. Good people go through trials, but don'tsuffer. With that experience their life becomes better not bitter.

Me: You mean to say such experience is useful?God: Yes. In every terms, Experience is a hard teacher. She givesthe test first and the lessons afterwards.

Me: But still, why should we go through such tests? Why can't we befree from problems?God: Problems are Purposeful Roadblocks Offering Beneficial Lessons

(to) Enhance Mental Strength. Inner strength comes from struggle andendurance, not when you are free from problems.

Me: Frankly in the midst of so many problems, we don't know where weare heading..God: If you look outside you will not know where you are heading.Look inside. Looking outside, you dream. Looking inside, you awaken.Eyes provide sight. Heart provides insight.

Me: Sometimes not succeeding fast seems to hurt more than moving inthe right direction. What should I do?

God: Success is a measure as decided by others. Satisfaction is ameasure as decided by you.Knowing the road ahead is more satisfyingthan knowing you rode ahead. You work with the compass. Let otherswork with the clock.

Me: In tough times, how do you stay motivated?God: Always look at how far you have come rather than how far youhave to go. Always count your blessing, not what you are missing.

Me: What surprises you about people?God: when they suffer they ask, "why me?" When they prosper, they

never ask "Why me". Everyone wishes to have truth on their side, butfew want to be on the side of the truth.

Me: Sometimes I ask, who am I, why am I here. I can't get the answer.God: Seek not to find who you are, but to determine who you want tobe. Stop looking for a purpose as to why you are here. Create it. Lifeis not a process of discovery but a process of creation.

Me: How can I get the best out of life?

  • 7/27/2019 My Collection of Anecdotes Sept 2011onwards

    4/26

God: Face your past without regret. Handle your present withconfidence. Prepare for the future without fear.

Me: One last question. Sometimes I feel my prayers are not answered.God: There are no unanswered prayers. At times, it is better if the answeris NO for your better future.

Me: Thank you for this wonderful chat. I am so happy to start theNew Day with a new sense of inspiration.God: Well. Keep the faith and drop the fear. Don't believe yourdoubts and doubt your beliefs. Life is a mystery to solve, not aproblem to resolve.

    GOD BLESS US YOU.

A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English,

nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.' 'Pencil,' however,

    is masculine: 'el lapiz.'

A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?'

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male

and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer' should be

a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for

    its recommendation.

The men's group decided that 'computer' should definitely be of the feminine

    gender ('la computadora'), because:

    1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;

    2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is

    incomprehensible to everyone else;

    3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later

    retrieval; and

    4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half

your paycheck on accessories for it.

    (THIS GETS BETTER!)

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ('elcomputador'), because:

    1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;

    2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;

    3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the

    problem; and

    5/26

    4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little

longer, you could have gotten a better model.

    The women won.

Send this to all the smart women you know...and all the men that have a sense of

    humor.

    The Preacher's Son:

An old country preacher had a teenage son, and it was getting time the boy

should give some thought to choosing a profession.

Like many young Men his age, the boy didn't really know what he wanted to do,

and he didn't seem too concerned about it.

    ...

One day, while the boy was away at school, his father decided to try an

experiment. He went into the boy's room and placed on his study table four

    objects..

    1. A Bible...

    2. A Silver dollar...

    3. A Bottle of whisky...

    4. A Playboy magazine...

'I'll just hide behind the door, the old preacher said to himself. 'When he

comes home from school today, I'll see which object he picks up.

If it's the Bible, he's going to be a preacher like me, and what a blessing that

    would be !

If he picks up the dollar, he's going to be a business man, and that would be

    okay, too.

But if he picks up the bottle, he's going to be a no-good drunken bum, and Lord,

what a shame that would be.

And worst of all if he picks up that magazine he's going to be a skirt-chasing

    womanizer.'

The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son's foot-steps as he entered

the house whistling and headed for his room.

The boy tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to leave the room he

spotted the objects on the table..

With curiosity in his eye, he walked over to inspect them.

Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm. He picked up the

silver dollar and dropped into his pocket. He uncorked the bottle and took a big

drink, while he admired this month's centerfold.

'Lord have mercy,' the old preacher disgustedly whispered.

    'He's gonna run for Parliament!'

Beautiful letter written by a father to his son. This applies to daughters too.

Use this in your teachings to your children.

    6/26

Following is a letter to his son from a renowned Hong Kong TV broadcaster cum

Child Psychologist. The words are actually applicable to all of us, young or

    old, children or parents!

I am writing this to you because of 3 reasons

    1. Life, fortune and mishaps are unpredictable; nobody knows how long he lives.

Some words are better said early.

    2. I am your father, and if I don't tell you these, no one else will.

    3. What is written is my own personal bitter experiences that perhaps could save

you a lot of unnecessary heart aches.

Remember the following as you go through life

    1. Do not bear grudge towards those who are not good to you. No one has the

responsibility of treating you well, except your mother and I. To those who are

good to you, you have to treasure it and be thankful, and ALSO you have to be

cautious, because, everyone has a motive for every move. When a person is good

to you, it does not mean he really likes you. You have to be careful; don't

hastily regard him as a real friend.

    2. No one is indispensable, nothing in the world that you must possess. Once you

understand this idea, it would be easier for you to go through life when people

around you don't want you anymore, or when you lose what/whom you love most.

    3. Life is short. When you waste your life today, tomorrow you would find that

life is leaving you. The earlier you treasure your life, the better you enjoy

    life.

    4. Love is but a transient feeling, and this feeling would fade with time and

with one's mood. If your so called loved one leaves you, be patient, time will

wash away your aches and sadness. Don't over exaggerate the beauty and sweetness

of love, and don't over exaggerate the sadness of falling out of love.

    5. A lot of successful people did not receive a good education, that does notmean that you can be successful by not studying hard! Whatever knowledge you

gain is your weapon in life. One can go from rags to riches, but one has to

    start from some rags!

    6. I do not expect you to financially support me when I am old, either would I

financially support your whole life. My responsibility as a supporter ends when

you are grown up. After that, you decide whether you want to travel in a public

transport or in your limousine, whether rich or poor.

    7. You honor your words, but don't expect others to be so. You can be good to

people, but don't expect people to be good to you. If you don't understand this,

you would end up with unnecessary troubles.

    8. I have bought lotteries for umpteen years, but I never strike any prize. That

shows if you want to be rich, you have to work hard! There is no free lunch!

    9. No matter how much time I have with you, let's treasure the time we have

together. We do not know if we would meet again in our next life.

    Your Dad

A Sardar died and went to heaven. When he got to the pearly gate Saint Peter

told him that new rules were in effect due to the advances in education on

    earth.

In order to gain admittance a prospective heavenly soul must answer two

    questions:

    1. Name two days of the week that begin with "T".

    2. How many seconds are there in a year?

The Sardar thought for a few minutes and answered...

    1. The two days of the week that begin with "T" are Today and Tomorrow.

    2. There are 12 seconds in a year.

Saint Peter said, "OK, I'll buy the Today and Tomorrow, even though it's not the

answer I expected, so your answer is correct. But how did you get only 12

    seconds in a year?"

The Sardar replied, "Well, January 2nd, February 2nd,March 2nd, etc...."

Saint Peter lets him in without another word.

GUIDE TO A BETTER LIFE by DR. RANDY PAUSCH

He was a Harvard professor and was in his forties. He died of pancreatic

cancer in 2008, but wrote a book The last lecture , one of the bestsellers in

2007. What a legacy to leave behind In a letter to his wife Jai and his

children, Dylan, Logan , and Chloe, he wrote this beautiful "guide to a better

    life" for them to follow.

May you be blessed by his insight.

POINTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

Personality:1. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is

    all about.

    2. Don't have negative thoughts of things you cannot control. Instead invest

your energy in the positive present moment

    3. Don't over do; keep your limits

    4. Don't take yourself so seriously; no one else does

    5. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip

    6. Dream more while you are awake

    7. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need..

    8. Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner of his/her mistakes of

the past. That will ruin your present happiness.

    9. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others.

    10. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present

    11. No one is in charge of your happiness except you

    12. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn.

Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like

algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

    13. Smile and laugh more

    14. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

    Community:

    15. Call your family often

    16. Each day give something good to others

    17. Forgive everyone for everything

  • 7/27/2019 My Collection of Anecdotes Sept 2011onwards

    8/26

    18. Spend time with people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6

    19. Try to make at least three people smile each day

    20. What other people think of you is none of your business

    21. Your job will not take care of you when you are sick. Your family and

    friends will. Stay in touch.

    Life:

    22. Put GOD first in anything and everything that you think, say and do.

    23. GOD heals everything24. Do the right things

    25. However good or bad a situation is, it will change

    26. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up

    27. The best is yet to come

    28. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful

    29. When you awake alive in the morning, thank GOD for it

    30. If you know GOD you will always be happy. So, be happy.

While you practice all of the above, share this knowledge with the people you

love, people you school with, people you play with, people you work with and

    people you live with.

Not only will it enrich YOUR life, but also that of those around you.

    HOW TO STAY YOUNG

    1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Letthe doctors worry about them. That is why you pay 'them'

    2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

    3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever.Never let the brain idle. 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop.'

    4. Enjoy the simple things.

    5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

    6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who iswith us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

    7. Surround yourself with what you love , whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever.Your home is your refuge.

    8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If itis beyond what you can improve, get help.

    9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to aforeign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

    10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.AND ALWAYS REMEMBER : Life is not measured by the number of breathswe take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Indian MindIT IS NOT A STORY BUT A TRUE INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED IN AMERICA.An Indian man walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loanofficer. Anemployee of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the bank's undergroundgarage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the Indian returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41.The loan officer says, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a littlepuzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are amulti millionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow$5,000'"The Indian replies: "Where else in New York City can I park my car for twoweeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return'"Ah, the mind of the Indian...

He said, "Now, who ever wants that Rama Swami should become aliveagain, may drink this water. "Come, did you not say that Rama Swamiwas the sole bread winner of the family? Who would die instead of him?It is a case of fair exchange, isn't it?"

The wife looked at the old mother and the old mother looked at the wife. The old father looked at Rama Swami's son.But no one came forward...

Then Maharaj Ji said to the old father, "Babuji, wouldn't you give yourlife for your son?" The old man said, "Well, I have my responsibilitytowards my wife. If I die who will look after her? I cannot offer my life."

Maharaj Ji asked the son, "Well little boy, would you like to give yourlife for your father?" The child's mother said "Maharaj Ji,are youinsane?..My son is only nine. He has not yet lived his life." All othershad their genuine reasons to present.

Maharaj Ji said, "Well it seems, that all of you are very much needed forthe things you need to do in this world... It seems Rama Swami was theonly one that could be spared... That is why God chose to take him

    away.

So shall we now proceed with his last rites?... It's getting late. Havingsaid that, Maharaj Ji got up and left.

In the words of a learned man ... "We tend a plant only when the leaves

    STORY NUMBER ONE

Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago . Capone wasn'tfamous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy

city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder.

Capone had a lawyer nicknamed "Easy Eddie." He was Capone's lawyer for

a good reason. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie's skill at legal

maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time.

To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was themoney big, but Eddie got special dividends, as well. For instance, he

and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all

of the conveniences of the day. The estate was so large that it filledan entire Chicago Cityblock.

Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little

consideration to the atrocity that went on around him.

Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved

dearly. Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars, and agood education. Nothing was withheld. Price was no object.

And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried toteach him right from wrong. Eddie wanted his son to be a better man

    than he was.

Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things hecouldn't give his son; he couldn't pass on a good name or a good

    example.

One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Easy Eddie wanted to

    rectify wrongs he had done.

He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al

"Scarface" Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some

semblance of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against

The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great. So, he testified.

Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a

lonely Chicago Street . But in his eyes, he had given his son thegreatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever

pay. Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a crucifix, a religious

medallion, and a poem clipped from a magazine.

    The poem read:

"The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell

just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. Now is the only

time you own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in time.

For the clock may soon be still."

    STORY NUMBER TWO

World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant

    Commander Butch O'Hare.

He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in

    the South Pacific.

One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was

airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone hadforgotten to top off his fuel tank.

He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship.

His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he

dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet.

As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned

his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its waytoward the American fleet.

The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but

defenseless. He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in

time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approachingdanger. There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them

    from the fleet.

Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the

formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he

charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another.Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many

planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent.

Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying toclip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as

possible, rendering them unfit to fly.

Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction.

Deeply relieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to

    the carrier.

Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding hisreturn. The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the

tale. It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his

fleet. He had, in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft. This took place

on February 20, 1942, and for that action Butch became the Navy'sfirst Ace of W.W.II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Medal of

    Honor.

    26/26

A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His

home town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and

today, O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage ofthis great man.

So, the next time you find yourself at O'Hare International, give somethought to visiting Butch's memorial displaying his statue and his

Medal of Honor. It's located between Terminals 1 and 2.

SO WHAT DO THESE TWO STORIES HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER?

    Butch O'Hare was "EasyEddie's" son.======================================
