To the studentEvery time you move from ‘study to study’, ‘study to employment’ and ‘employment to employment’ you will need to make choices that will affect your career and lifestyle. Your career can be defined by your experiences of life, learning and work that you have developed from early childhood. In this way your career development is part of your life development and it is a journey of growth and discovery. Career development is a lifelong process.

Your family and friends, teachers and career practitioners can help you in this process.

This workbook encourages you to evaluate your skills, interests and values and their application to your career development. The activities in this workbook provide a starting point for exploring career options and for setting some goals for your future. We all have choices, how will you approach yours?

SECTION 1: Career Development

What is career development? Career Development is the complex process of managing life, learning and work over your whole life. (Career Industry Council of Australia)

In the past:Career development in the past was often simply about getting a job. A person left school, gained a job and maybe worked their way up in their organisation. Most people had the same job their whole working life.

In the present:Today career development is seen as managing all aspects of life. A person will have many different jobs throughout their lifetime; some will be full-time, some casual or part-time and

some will be paid and other work will be unpaid. A person may work overseas as well as in Australia and many people are working beyond the age of 65 years.

In the future: Who knows? Developing skills that allow you to adapt to the constantly changing

world will help. Being open to opportunities and new ways of working is an important tactic. Consider the High Five Messages of Career Development which have

been developed to identify the career skills that you will need to manage your future.

The High Five Messages of career development:

Change is constant – embrace it!Recognise that the world around you is constantly changing.Be open to change and remain alert to new opportunities.

Learning is ongoingStrive for continuous personal improvement.Stay motivated by learning new skills and developing new talents.

Focus on the journeyDon’t focus on one destination only.Recognise that your career journey will be throughout your lifetime.Appreciate and value each experience along the way.

Know yourself, believe in yourself and follow your heartPursue your passion to find fulfilment.Discover ways to combine your interests with career opportunities.

Access your alliesRely on the support of your family, friends, mentors, colleagues and peers.Career success can be a team effort.

YOURTASK Further education and training planner

Now that you have investigated two jobs you will probably need to examine your further education options. Again, always check that the information is up to date as courses change constantly.

It is worth thinking about yourself and your past education experiences and how they will affect your future study. Acknowledging problems allows you to make changes or seek help and increases your chances of success.

Often it is easier to understand what is required so that you are prepared for the level of commitment and challenges that the course may offer.

What do I need to learn?Gaining skills and a qualification can assist you in seeking employment and in some occupations it is essential. Formal learning can take many forms and there are 10 levels of qualifications.

Levels of qualifications

Australia has a system that rates qualifications it is called the Australian Qualifications Framework. The framework explains how the qualifications prepare you for work and the amount of study time needed to complete.
