2O17 QUILTER OF D ISTINCTIONTrudy Cowan

It is with great excitement that the Festival of Quilts welcomes Trudy Cowan as the Quilter of Distinction for 2017. Trudy is an artist in the true sense of the word. At

the age of 9, she began using a sewing machine and has been dabbling in the textile arts ever since. Retirement from her full-time job led her into the quilting world, and she has been dazzling us with her quilting and textile art, making herself a household name in the Calgary quilting community. With the desire and skills to tackle challenging projects, in 2008 Trudy was enticed to design her first art quilt, a salmon swimming through yarn and ribbon seaweed, embellished with beadwork. In true artist fashion, the inspiration hasn’t stopped and her current projects include writing a children’s poem that will be illustrated using a series of fourteen quilts. Trudy has been a long time volunteer in the local community and here at Heritage Park. Trudy was instrumental as a volunteer heritage advisor to the Little Synagogue on the Prairie Project Society. Since 2009, she has continued her involvement at the Park as the Synagogue’s interpretive storyteller. Trudy is also an active volunteer with the Calgary Stampede Historical Committee and its SAM Centre Planning sub-committee. Trudy has also spent a great deal of time teaching textile arts including embellishing techniques, translating paper-cuts into fabric art, appliqué, and so much more. Heritage Park is honoured to have Trudy join us as the Quilter of Distinction. We are excited to share her story and summary of her quilting work. In Trudy’s own words, “Sometimes a quilt project spontaneously takes on a life of its own, leading the work and me in unexpected directions. But that serendipity is all part of the joyous adventure of each work.”

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE AMAZING IN THE

QUILTING COMMUNITY?

Every year Heritage Park’s Festival of Quilts recognizes an outstanding member of our quilting community as a Quilter of Distinction. Nominations are collected during the Festival of Quilts, and are also accepted by Heritage Park’s Special Events office throughout the year.

Selection is based on the following criteria:• An outstanding quilter who has

made significant contributions by volunteering, being an inspiration to others, and showing encouragement within the quilting community

• Is a resident of Calgary or the surrounding area

• Has a sufficient body of work available to showcase their talent

• Has work to show progression or growth in quilting

• Is available to meet with the public for a minimum of four hours each day of the Festival of Quilts
