Beyonce Knowles
• When Beyonce was just 8 years old she auditioned for a kids singing group in Houston,Texas
• The group went on Star Search and lost in the finals.
• Now Beyonce alone has made 6 albums. Not only that but she also does some charity work. She works at a charity called “Survivor Foundation” it helps people who survived Hurricane Katrina
Phillis Wheatley
• Phillis was an African slave in Boston Phillas came to Boston slave market in 1761
• It was estimated that Phillis was between 7-8 years old
• By the time she was 13 she wrote her first poem
• Phillis today has a center named after him called Phillis Wheatley Community Center.
Ella Baker
• Ella became the first American women to receive a doctorate in public health
• Ella also helped find the American child Hygiene Association
• Ella spent her life working behind the scenes to organize the “Civil Rights Movement”
• Ella was one of the people who created the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957
Rosa Parks
• Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man because she was tired of being pushed around just because of her race.Rosa Parks stood up for herself by sitting down.
• She also helped with freedom Rosa had an institute called the Rosa and Raymond Institute that helped kids with freedom.
Thurgood Marshall • Thurgood was the
grandson of a slave• In 1930 Thurgood applied
for a law school but was denied because he was black he new after that that him being denied would interrupt his skills for law.
• But Thurgood became a counsel and chief of the National Association for the advancement of colored people
