ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES
October 30, 2012
Dear Membership,
It has been encouraging over the past year in the Mount Washington Valley to witness an economic recovery, albeit one that is slow and still has its challenges. Many chamber businesses have advised me that their business revenue is on the upswing but costs have escalated and everyone is still struggling to be profitable. Many businesses have had to change their business model and do things that they have never had to do before to survive
and be profitable. I have experienced these changes in my own business and have had to adjust “my sails” to maintain a profitable business.
The Chamber has also been adjusting their business model and has gone through a Strategic Planning process to identify how our business model should be changed to better serve our membership and the community. You will be hearing more about this Strategic Plan in the future and I ask you to support Janice and the Board of Directors in the pursuit of the Strategic Plan Initiatives.
I want to personally thank all of our Volunteers and the Staff of the Chamber for their diligence in providing services to our membership and continuing to find new and effective ways to market the Mount Washington Valley as a tourist destination. These efforts have resulted in a growing membership and a positive response from most members relating to the services the chamber provides.
I also want to thank our Board of Directors in their efforts to guide the Chamber and support the Strategic Planning Process.
I also want to personally thank Janice Crawford for her unwavering commitment to the members of the Chamber. Janice is always pursuing new ways to help you market and grow your business and is looking forward to meeting the challenges of our Strategic Plan as we move forward.
Best Regards,
Bob Carper, President of the Board of Directors

STAFF DIRECTORY
This past year was filled with plenty of highlights and a few bumps along the way. As most of you are aware, we launched a newly designed website in April. The feedback from the visitors and our members has been overwhelmingly positive. Visitors are enjoying the larger imagery, more logical interface and ease of navigation while our members appreciate the more focused navigation to their business listing pages. A large project like this does not come without its challenges. We learned valuable information about our web traffic tracking tools and continue to take large strides towards a more comprehensive understand-ing of our visitor’s behavior online.
One of the largest increases in traffic we saw this year is with our blog at “mwvblog.wordpress.com”. This is the primary Internet-based outlet for our members’ press releases, store openings and other general information delivery. We continue to encourage all members to keep sending us your information and updates. This “casual” platform is certainly a fan-favorite and is a great way to get exposure for your business. We have increased our traffic to the blog by over 9,100 visitors!! That translates to an additional 25 people reading about your business EVERY DAY over last year. We’re excited about this growth and hope to continue it into the new fiscal year.
Once again we saw a nice jump in the number of visitors using Google to locate the chamber’s website with an increase of 2,504 more searches. Interestingly Yahoo! and Bing numbers were both down a bit (27% and 12% respectively). Data like this helps us direct our efforts in Search Engine Optimization. The more popular search terms continue to focus on “North Con-way”, “Mount Washington Valley” and of course “restaurants” and “lodging”. No secret there. Some of the more interesting terms that people used to find us this year included “chambre de commerce north conway”- 47 times, “haus” – 33 times and 31 people even wrote out in their search “mt washington valley chamber of commerce north conway nh”.
It’s no secret social media is a strong place to gain exposure for your business. We continue to build our Facebook presence and are seeing the dividends in referral traffic and personal interactions on the page. Facebook referrals were up another 48% this year with a total of 1,887 visitors coming to the website from our Fan Page. We were successfully able to merge our duplicate pages and now have a solid fan-base of over 6,000. That is quite an audience that gets our (and your) message. In a given week, over 2,200 people are being exposed to the comments and press releases we are publishing. The 35-44 year old de-mographic continues to be the largest of our fan-base with nearly 30%. If we look at the full range from 25-54, they represent 72% of all of our fans.
We are focusing some additional efforts this Winter into the social media world. With continued contests and focused ad-vertising we hope to increase not only the number of fans, but (more importantly) the amount of traffic those efforts brings to our website and to our members’ businesses. If you would like to provide ideas or prizes for these contests, please give us a call.
Overall our website traffic was fantastic this year. With a total of 675,727 visitors and 4,137,431 pages viewed, we’re quite happy with the growth. In more basic terms, that was 1,846 people visiting the website every day and those people viewed 11,300 pages while they were there. That is about 6 pages per visit. The amount of time on the site averaged about 8 minutes per visitor.
We have made requests for this in the past and would be remiss not to mention it here as well. We have over 6000 fans on Facebook, our blog had over 13,000 visitors reading it and our website boasts traffic of over 56,300 visitors per month. If you are not sending us events, specials, updates, etc. about your business, you are missing out on a TON of eyeballs and visitors! Take advantage of our marketing efforts by including your business!
We are here to promote You!

None of our active PR program would be possible without the help of very generous Mt Washington Valley businesses. Thank you to all the lodging, dining, attractions, retail and service members in hosting media who in turn provide stories to increase awareness about the hosting business and the Mt Washington Valley destination.
ABOUT THE SNOWWe all know what happens when the Meteorologists in Boston, Manchester, Providence and Portland say it’s going to rain on a January or February weekend. An audible groan can be heard among ski resorts, XC centers and lodging properties in the Valley as plans change and cancellations occur.
Four years ago, the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce launched a concerted campaign to address meteorologists in New England with a campaign designed exclusively to provide information about winter ski and travel conditions in the Valley. The program was tremendously well accepted by New England meteorologists. The enthusiastic feedback from weather men and women was exceeded only by the great coverage for skiing in Mt Washington Valley over the past three years. In fact, at a Ski NH meeting over last summer, meteorologists pointed to the chamber’s program as an example for all New England ski resorts. Once again his winter, with the help of a JPP grant matched with funds from the ski resorts, the chamber and ski resorts will once again work with meteorologists to provide up-to-date information, forecasts, photos and video footage and ongoing communication offering an upbeat and accurate view of the weather in Mt. Washington Valley on a consistent basis.
Last year what was formerly dubbed “the meteorologists project” was renamed ABOUT THE SNOW, and will now expand to include a skier outreach and expanded social media component. Each week we’ll send the ABOUT THE SNOW newsletter to those who’ve signed up to receive information about skiing, events and snowmobiling in Mt Washington Valley. This newsletter will offer insight into snow conditions and forecasts, include offers from ski resorts and winter-related business, and highlight one lodging package and a “tip of the week” each week. We’ll also include contests which will be tied into the contests offered on the chamber’s website, which will drive respondents to the Facebook page to post answers. This newsletter will be loaded with recent photos of ski conditions; the same photos that were mailed to meteorologists for mentions on-air. We have nearly 5000 names of people who’ve indicated an interest in receiving ski and winter information.
We’re planning a focused Facebook and Twitter program this year, offering up-to-date information and photos about the snow to skiers throughout the country. This year for the first time we’re also engaging an aggressive advertising campaign on Facebook to help build the chamber’s fan base and drive traffic to the chamber’s website and a new ABOUT THE SNOW page that’ll focus on all things winter. Photos will also be uploaded to the Chamber’s Flickr account for usage by members too and will also be posted to a new Pinterest page too. So as you can see, we’ll tie the traditional and social based marketing outreach from the chamber carefully into the ABOUT THE SNOW project.
Yet, we can’t do this without input from all the chamber members. Please send your photos to me, at [email protected] or [email protected] and we will use them. Our needs for photos are greater than ever, so please send photos – especially those that are about the snow – throughout the year. It can be a photo of the snow in your backyard or fun in the snow at your business. We will credit the photographer and/or the business too.

These individuals have demonstrated outstanding and consistent caring for the improvement of the Valley and the quality of life for the residents of our many communities without the expectation of reward or commendation. Their bios in the program read like a national Who’s Who.
Without them we would not have the very important social services, business support, and entrepreneurism that have gone into making our valley a quality place to live, raise a family and work.
We appreciate Woodlands Credit Union’s enthusiastic sponsorship of this award. It is with great pleasure that I offer a hearty congratulations from the Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, staff and volunteers to this year’s recipients of the White Mountains Treasure Award.
With great respect,Bob Carper, President, MWVCC

Everyone in the Valley knows Cindy as the “Arts Jubilee Lady” and well so as she has been associated with Arts Jubilee for its entire thirty years.
Cindy’s undergraduate work was done at the Crane School of Music, SUNY, Potsdam, New York. Her graduate work was done at the Hart School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut. Coming to the Valley in 1979 as a housewife and mother of three, she also taught music in the schools in both Bartlett and Tamworth.
In 1983 Cindy was tapped to be the first Executive Director of Arts Jubilee, a position that she still holds today. She acquired her event planning skills from the on-the-job training that went with that position of coordinating summer performing arts events here in the Valley. While Arts Jubilee’s focus is presenting concerts, other requirements such as acquiring sponsors, producing collateral material, press relations, and general organizational management are all done by Cindy as part of her job. Since 1991, Cindy has been serving other organizations in addition to Arts Jubilee and founded Monarch Events which presently also serves White Mountains Musical Arts. Other organizations formerly served by Monarch Events include both First Night and the Mount Washington Valley’s New Year Festival, Conway’s 4th of July Celebration, the Polar Express, the Bunny Express, the Easter Parade, the 2000 Jackson, NH Bicentennial Celebration, and the 2001 Council on State Governments Eastern Regional Conference. Cindy has also been responsible in the past for both the Audi-Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb and the Audi-Mount Washington Auto Road Motorsport Hillclimb.
Cindy’s Community involvement goes from being a local church choir director to chairing major fund raising and restoration events. She was the Chairman of the Conway Whitaker Home site Master Plan Committee and helped to shape that site into what it is today, a community based recreation site serving the residents of Conway and visitors year round. Cindy also served as Chairman of the Citizen’s Committee which created the Connie Davis Watson Park in North Conway and Chairman of the Restoration Project for the Mineral Springs House near the new Kennett High School. She also helped to establish the Salyards Center for the Arts in Conway.
As the well-respected event planner and manager for the Mount Washington Valley, Cindy has served countless non-profit organizations or companies whose events have benefited non-profit organizations and the citizens of the Mount Washington Valley. She has enriched our lives and made the Valley a better place to live and is truly a White Mountains Treasure.

During his 25 years of practicing law in the Valley, Ken has served as moderator for the Town of Conway, school moderator for the Town of Tamworth and has served on numerous Boards of Directors and as a trustee of numerous valley organizations.
However, it is Ken’s quiet and effective service as counsel and advisor to more than 50 non-profit boards that allows him to make an imprint warranting his consideration as a Valley Treasure. Ken has supported involvement of all attorneys at Cooper Cargill Chant PA in service to the Valley. Every lawyer at the firm
serves on more than one board and all regularly seek out Ken’s counsel with their boards, on issues of corporate governance, board management, financing, land transactions, capital campaigns, conflicts and everything else.
The list of Boards served by CCC lawyers with Ken’s quiet, regular behind the scene help includes, but is not limited to the MWV Velo Club, West Main Recreation (The Ham Arena), Pemi Fish and Game, the MWV Lacrosse Club, Friends of Tuckermans Ravine, the Millen Foundation, the Kennett Football boosters, the MWV Cal Ripken League, MWV Ski Touring, MWV Soccer, Eastern Slope Ski Club and the Tamworth Outing Club, Friends of Conway Recreation, and the Wildcat Comps Ski Club, the Mount Washington Valley Economic Council, the Chamber, the Pequawket Foundation, the Rotary Club, the Waldorf School, the Upper Saco Valley Land Trust, the MWV Children’s Museum, numerous family foundations, other arts education and civic endeavors,
Ken Cargill is the very quiet straw that stirs the drink and makes sure things are done right, and by the book, for countless Valley non-profits.

Bayard moved back to the Mt. Washington Valley in 1977 to manage his family’s realty and land holding companies. As he immersed himself in the family businesses he also joined several community boards.
His community commitment over the years has included Conway Board of Selectman, Conway School Board, Conway Fire Department, Conway Precinct Commissioner, Ham Arena Board, Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, Tech Village Realty Board of Directors, Little League Coach, Flag Football Coach and
Kennett High Boosters.
In addition to being committed to his community, Bayard is a great father, husband and businessman. Thirty years of commercial brokerage experience and a century of family history in Mt. Washington Valley have provided Bayard with a wealth of experience and a clear understanding of the business climate in Mt. Washington Valley.
Bayard’s dedication to all of the above makes him a true White Mountains Treasure.

Peter bought Eastern Slope Inn in the late fifties. He was a founder of the Chamber of Commerce and a shareholder and Director of Attitash where he invented Free Style Skiing, holding the first FS competitions in the world in 1966. He helped bring snowmaking to the Valley, worked on promotions to create the Mt. Washington Valley brand and taught Junior Program.
Peter served on the Town of Conway School Board and the Budget Committee and was a Conway Selectman for 6 years and Town Moderator for several years. In the
early 90’s, he headed the Chamber of Commerce. He founded a Children’s Theatre Company (Piett Pipper) and a Community Theatre (Resort Players), wrote several musical comedies (book, music and lyrics) which were performed at Eastern Slope Inn Playhouse and a short musical celebrating the Cranmore 50th Anniversary.
He is the author of two mystery novels and many short stories set in Mt. Washington Valley. Peter was an avid skier; New England ranked tennis player and hiker. Peter is an owner/broker of Pinkham Real Estate, the oldest Real Estate Company in the Valley, where he continues working 6 days each week.
Peter’s dedication to all of the above makes him a true White Mountains Treasure.

Republican—Democrat—Undeclared?
Sure, I’m a Republican. But there’s a serious threat facing all of us: New Hampshire’s population’s aging. Our economy’s declining. Young people are leaving. Incomes are falling. Old political debates and empty
slogans are blocking vital changes.
This isn’t a Republican or Democrat problem--this is a challenge to all of us. We need a far more productive economy for today’s working population to have better lives, and so our children and grandchildren can have
a future in New Hampshire.
