MYWEEKLYPREVIEW.COM.AU MY WEEKLY PREVIEW \ JUNE 28, 2013 [ 5 ]

Hands up who was glued to the TV set or internet last month as Wayne Swan handed down the recent

federal budget? Or what about when state treasurer Tim Nicholls tabled the 2013/14 Queensland budget in state parliament a few weeks ago?

My hand is still by my side. While state and federal budgets impact on services we all enjoy and set out expenses we all have to pay, when it comes to following budget news it can be a bit of a snooze-fest, especially if, like me, your thing isn’t really numbers.

But this week we all have a chance to redeem ourselves and take note of the budget that our local representatives have spent months sweating over. In the MWP cover story over the page, we have a rundown of the council budget, and talk to the mayor about his priorities for expenditure – and income

– for the region for the new f nancial year. From money to makeovers, our property

cover story this week (over in My Property Preview on page 46) highlights the importance of preparing your property for sale. Real estate buyers are a savvy bunch and you have to be on the ball to get the right price. If your home is listed for sale, have a read of that one.

Speaking of all things stylish, Di and Nicky have hit the shops and discovered that all that glitters is gold. And silver. And Swarovksi crystal. Get glittery this winter on page 28.

And the style just keeps coming – Todd Widdicombe has worked his way through another slab in the name of journalistic inquisitiveness. His beer review and more is in our palate section, on page 32. Perhaps the mayor should take note – I reckon Mark and his councillors deserve a cleansing ale after this week’s effort. Cheers!

4 DAY FORECAST

SURF REPORTWith Steve Harris from Suburban SurfThis week still looks pretty sad in the hope for a long overdue swell. From Tuesday to Thursday there is an inconsistent E/SE ground swell with waves only around the one to two-foot mark. Winds through to Friday will be tending northerly with lighter NW in the morning. Spots to check would be the open beaches for more swell early, then the northerly corners in the arvos. Saturday has a southerly change

with SW winds early, followed by a SE change. However, waves will be even smaller Saturday around the half to one-foot mark. Hopefully there is a small southerly ground swell predicted to build for Sunday arvo. So hit the open beaches. However, winds will be from the E/NE, making it a bit messy. High tide is between mid-morning and lunchtime all this week and the water temp is still sitting around the 20-degree mark. A spring suit for the early morning is

a good call. Good surfing and he e’s hoping for at least some rideable waves.

This week the Sunshine Coast Council handed down its 2013/14 budget

and the focus is on roads, waste services and a new business centre for Maroochydore. Capital works, economic development and maintaining our lifestyle and community are also high on the list.

More than $100 million of the $538 million budget is dedicated to capital works in the region, which includes upgrades to existing assets and new infrastructure projects for the community.

It was, says mayor Mark Jamieson, a tough budget. The Sunshine Coast’s upcoming de-amalgamation with Noosa has undoubtedly put a dampener on spending, and a rate rise for property owners was inevitable.

“We know some people are f nding it diff cult to make ends meet and we have done everything we can to keep rates and waste increases as low as possible,” says the mayor.

“That includes an organisation

[ C O V E R S T O R Y ]

Residents and businesses all over the Coast should expect to see council workers replacing roads, constructing bus shelters and patching up council property as they work their way through the $109 million set aside for capital works in this year’s budget. So what are some of the big-ticket items earmarked for 2013/14? Here are a few:• $15 million for the resealing

and rehabilitation of roads• $5 million for pavement

‘rehabilitation’• $6 million for land acquisition

in Maroochydore for the city centre.

Each division is also well covered. Roads and parks, pathways and pools, lighthouses and fences, drainage and roofi ng all fi gure in the budget. Here are just a few projects set to happen in the new fi nancial year: • $4 million to design and

construct the Beerwah business area

• More than $2 million for the Nambour Resource Recovery Centre

review to improve council’s eff ciency and effectiveness, which will lead to job losses in the organisation.

“Rates will go up by f ve per cent and waste charges will increase by 7.4 per cent, which means an average ratepayer will pay $1.22 extra a week.”

But Jamieson adds, “This budget is all about getting the fundamentals right. We’re reducing debt and increasing cash, which allows us to repay our loans and pay for infrastructure.”

While rates and waste charges will increase, environment, public transport, tourism and heritage levies will not, and pensioner and early payment discounts will remain.

The focus for councillor Chris Thompson, the deputy mayor and f nance portfolio holder, is preparing the region for “promising times ahead”, getting ready for projects such as the Oceanside health hub.

“Council has maintained its focus on economic development so the region makes the most of its existing

Capital works spend

opportunities and attracts new ones,” Thompson says.

The budget sets aside almost $12 million for economic development to, says the mayor “help the region harness existing and future job-creating opportunities”.

The council has already cut red tape, reduced fees and put in place measures to make it easier to do business in the region, and the focus is more of the same in this budget. Making lodgement of forms easier, implementing a strategy to make the region attractive for major events and delivering the economic development strategy are all key plans for 2013/14.

But it’s not all business for Jamieson and co, with cash earmarked for, says the council, “community and supporting our way of life”. Libraries and galleries are expected to receive more than $13 million, $37.5 million has been earmarked for roads and bridges, while our aquatic centres, leisure centres and sports facilities will be getting $14 million.

On budgetSUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL’S NEW BUDGET AIMS TO STIMULATE A NEW ERA

OF ECONOMIC GROWTH WHILE MINIMISING IMPACT ON RATEPAYERS.

My Weekly Preview spoke exclusively to Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson about the budget. Here’s what he had to say.

Q. Preparing any council budget is challenging but were there particular challenges for you this

This week’s budget includes rate rises and an increase in the cost of waste removal, but our local council remains one of the lowest-charging for wheelie bin services.

“We have managed to keep the cost for servicing wheelie bins as low as possible – domestic customers with a 240-litre wheelie bin will pay $17 extra per year,” councillor and deputy mayor Chris Thompson reassures residents.

“A trip to the tip with a small box trailer of rubbish will cost an extra $3. The increase for the average resident will be $1.22 per week for rates and waste.”

Thompson adds, “From July 1, residents will now also be able to collect up to three cubic metres of free mulch when visiting the

• $840,000 for Ilkley’s Wilson Road

• More than $6 million on the landfi ll at Caloundra

• Close to $900,000 for a new roof for Caloundra’s Events Centre

• $850,000 for Caloundra’s Central Park

• $1 million for streetscaping of Alexandra Parade in Maroochydore

• More than $1.7 million for work on Mooloolaba’s Brisbane Road

• $390,000 for Buderim’s Ballinger Park

• $700,000 to build new cabins in Cotton Tree Holiday Park

• More than $3 million for the airport.

Talking trashlandf ll, regardless of whether they have a green waste service,” Thompson adds.

Mayor Mark Jamieson says managing the costs of waste disposal is always a challenge at budget time. “We need to assist the community to minimise their own waste, and certainly those people who manage their waste within our weekly or fortnightly rubbish collection schedule are to be commended. We’re also doing everything we can to convert green waste to mulch, but again that’s an expensive process.”

As a region, it’s crucial that we preserve our landf ll. Jamieson says many locals still don’t realise the extent of the council’s recycling program, or the range of items that can be recycled through resource

recovery centres. Waste is identif ed as a special item under the budget, and there are fees associated with dumping rubbish. “A lot of people object to that, but my response is if the user doesn’t pay, who does?” Jamieson says.

“If we want to be Australia’s most sustainable region, we’ve got to take a lot more responsibility for our waste.”

A budget for the future year due to de-amalgamation?A. “I think that obviously made it a more complex issue. This is effectively a budget for six months for the current Sunshine Coast Regional Council, and thereafter for what will effectively be the Sunshine Coast Council, which will leave responsibility for delivering a budget to the new Noosa Council once elected.

“Combined with the general environment of rising costs and declining revenues, those three items have made this a particularly challenging budget.”

Q. What is your main aim for this budget?A. “This is a budget for the future

– it’s about making sure the new Sunshine Coast Council f ts the purpose and is in the right shape to go forward. It will set us up to make annual savings of about $10 million [in the future].

“It also includes signif cant expenditure in economic development, to continue to improve our economy and to ensure that people’s futures are more secure from an employment perspective, and to ensure opportunities for their children to live and work on the Sunshine Coast.

“So we’ll continue to stimulate economic activity, but we’ve also committed $29 million to the environment and over $13 million

to libraries and galleries. The budget includes a capital works package of $109 million. And while people might say that’s less than last year, again, it’s not a like-for-like comparison [due to de-amalgamation].”

Q. Not everyone will be happy with the rate increases. Why are they necessary?A. “Council had to deal with cost-of-living increases, business costs have increased, we have enterprise management bargaining agreements that will see wage increases, and council has also had to deal with signif cant increases in

<from previous page

the cost of electricity. The costs around managing waste disposal continue to rise – we’ve got to be very careful about preserving our landf ll as long as we possibly can, and to go and develop new ones is very expensive.

“[The increase] is f ve per cent, or around $1.20 per week, [and] I believe, under the circumstances – given the challenges we’ve had post de-amalgamation, a signif cant reduction in revenue coming in from the development sector in particular, and the general rising of costs – we’ve done well to keep it at that level.

“We’re marginally ahead of some other councils, but a fair way behind Rockhampton, who’ve increased their rates by eight per cent.” [Rockhampton Council is also undergoing de-amalgamation, along with Cairns Regional Council and Tablelands Regional Council, which haven’t brought down their budgets yet.]

Q. You’re a businessman and have often spoken about the importance of supporting business on the Coast, but there is also money in the budget for our libraries, sporting facilities, streetscapes and parks. Is it diffi cult to strike a balance between the two?A. “It is, because there’s only so much money

to go around. Councillors and council staff spent many meetings f nalising this budget and trying to get it just right, because it is our plan for the future.

“There is an expectation that this council will continue to stimulate the economy, but the community also expects us to concentrate on core responsibilities – that our roads and bridges are kept in good shape (and we’ve committed $37.5 million for that), that our parks are well catered for and maintained, and that the look and feel of our community is maintained. This is a proud community, and council will continue to maintain that pride.”

Q. The fi nal word?A. “This is a budget for the future, a budget that will set up the two new councils, continuing our focus on economic development and the implementation of our Sunshine Coast economic development strategy.

“It’s been wound down as tight as we can in terms of the new organisational structure, and savings related to the changes in structure.

“We’re going to continue stimulation of the business sector, the private sector that will be largely responsible for creating employment in the future.”

The council’s $109 million capital works package includes some expenditure for projects in the future Noosa council area. The mayor says this is because Noosa and the surrounding district is still part of the Sunshine Coast Council until December 31, and the council will continue to provide services until the new Noosa Council takes over in the new year. “People living in Noosa and district won’t notice any change in services up until December 31,” Mark Jamieson says.

CALOUNDRA TEAM PLAYS UNFORGETTABLE MATCH

The Caloundra Junior Rugby Union under 11 boys team had the game of their lives

last Saturday night when they played the curtain raiser Seven’s match at Suncorp Stadium.

The team of 14 played against Toowoomba in the lead-up to the international match between the Australian Wallabies and the British and Irish Lions.

Team manager Trudy Ahearn says the boys and their families were “ecstatic” to hear they had

been chosen to play on the night.“The Caloundra Under 11s were

victorious in their match, winning against Toowoomba 25-5, much to the excitement of coach Scott and assistant coach Dan,” Ahearn says.

They won the opportunity as part of a Rugby Test Match competition run by Suncorp Stadium and Australian Rugby Union.

After the game, the players watched the Wallabies and Lions warm up before heading to their seats to watch the game.

FALLING DOLLAR GOOD NEWS FOR SOME

If you are planning an overseas holiday, news of the falling dollar might be a bit

disappointing. But for many sectors of the

Coast economy, the Australian dollar’s plummet from 103 US cents a few weeks ago to a value of 92.2 US cents on Monday is news worth celebrating.

University of the Sunshine Coast professor of Finance Sajid Anwar says there are a few factors contributing to the Australian dollar’s sharp decline.

He says the American economy is improving and the gap in the interest rate has narrowed, so foreign investors are not making as much by investing in Australia and are taking their money out of the country.

Weaker-than-expected economic data from China is also contributing.

“It will increase sales in the retail sector, encourage tourism and even the students, the foreign students, will f nd Australia a more

Twelve prominent local businessmen will today fi nish a fi ve-month journey to lose 20 kilograms in 20 weeks while raising money for charity.

The 2020 weight loss challenge began in February as a fundraiser for Maggie’s Dreamcatcher.

Cheryl and Michael Ryan formed the Sunshine Coast charity, which raises money to help reduce the suffering of people in Himachal Pradesh in northern India, by providing qualif ed medical care through the supply of equipment, f nancial aid and placement of volunteer doctors.

The f nal will be held at the Calcutta Luncheon at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club today, where the weigh-in will take place and the winner will be announced.

attractive place to study and these things have a f ow-on effect.”

Sunshine Coast Destination chairman Barrie Adams hopes the positive results recently received from domestic visitation will continue now the Australian dollar has dropped.

“The lower dollar has benef ts both in terms of domestic and international tourism,” he says.

Anwar expects the dollar will remain between 88 and 94 US cents.

Meanwhile, the falling Australian dollar is expected to contribute to a rise in petrol prices to more than $1.50 per litre.

The national average price of unleaded petrol rose by 3.4 cents per litre this month to 148.6 cents according to the Australian Institute of Petroleum.

Commsec economist Savanth Sebastian expects that price to rise a further three cents in the next fortnight. AAP & MWP

Top Shots going strongTop Shots Fun Park at Maroochydore is not only open for business, it has expanded.

Top shots manager Barry Higgins says the sign advertising the land for sale is causing confusion and he wants to set the record straight.

The family fun park has been a popular tourist and recreation spot on the Coast since it opened its doors 12 years ago.

And Higgins is hoping it can continue entertaining locals and visitors for years to come.

“The land is for sale for redevelopment with a tenant in place who would be happy to sign a f ve-year lease to stay here,” Higgins says.

Like many Coast businesses that rely on tourism, the economic uncertainties of recent years have taken their toll, but he says there are positive signs for the future.

“It’s been tougher the last few years but now it’s on the improve again,” he says.

In the last few months he has

expanded the park’s video arcade to about double its previous size.

Top Shots also has two 18-hole mini golf courses, a vertical trampoline, rock climbing wall and canon ball blaster, among other activities, and he says its activities appeal to all ages.

With the school holidays in full-swing and the tourism industry showing positive signs, he says Top Shots is going strong.

GETTING KIDS TO MOVE IT

A University of the Sunshine Coast research project is screening the “physical

literacy” of almost 1000 local children to determine whether they have learned basic skills related to movement.

The USC team has just f nished four months of recording how the children, in years one to eight, performed seven movement competencies, along with their heights, weights and activity levels.

USC Research Fellow and Sport and Exercise scientist Mark McKean says the data will now be analysed.

Depending on the f ndings, a further research project could develop an intervention model for the participating schools’ physical education classes.

“We’ve certainly noticed issues with the children’s movement abilities and we think it’s great the schools are keen to move to the next step with our research,” McKean says.

“The children who performed

KIDS LEARN TO BE GREENRegistrations are open for the Sunshine Coast Kids in Action conference to be held on September 4 to 5. The forum provides activities for students in grades f ve to nine to learn about the importance of a sustainable environment. For more information call 5494 3642 or visitsunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

ACADEMIC SKILLS COURSEUSC’s Student Life and Learning will run its academic skills development course from 6 to 8pm over f ve Tuesdays from July 9 to August 6. The course will run at USC Gympie’s new building at the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE on Cartwright Road. Call 5430 1226 to enrol.

$10,000 MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPThe state’s emerging musicians are encouraged to apply for the annual $10,000 Billy Thorpe Scholarship. “The [scholarship] offers career guidance and the opportunity to record with a local producer along with a cash component,” says Arts Minister Ian Walker. Applications for the scholarship close on July 22. Head to arts.qld.gov.au for more information.

QUEENSLAND GARDEN EXPOAll things gardening will be on show when the Queensland Garden Expo opens its gates from July 5 to 7. The annual event will feature lectures and demonstrations, landscape garden displays, f oral art displays, a kitchen garden and much more. The Expo is on at Nambour Showgrounds. Adult tickets are $16, aged concession $14.

News Previewswell in these movements also were generally active during the day, through sport and f tness, games or lunchtime play. That may be one of the key factors.”

McKean says many modern health problems are related to a lack of movement or can be treated by increased movement.

“Global research has proven the link between children who can’t move well and obesity,” he says.

“If a child doesn’t enjoy physical activity or feel capable, they won’t put themselves in that situation. They stay sedentary and inactive into adulthood.”

He says the ability to move was once a standard part of any child’s daily life and most children had a sound physical literacy that progressed into adulthood.

If you would like to know more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or view the webinar “7 Steps to Freedom from Anxiety & Depression” at www.advancedwellness.com.au. A webinar is simply a seminar that you can see on the internet.

Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow?

One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them.

The cause has been found in the gut and seems to be widespread throughout the community. It is a malicious infection mainly picked up from travelling overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is often only detected in specialised testing. This infection has been shown to release a neuronal toxin, affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It has not often been associated with mental health conditions even

though studies are available showing its impact on the brain. It can be passed on from person to person very easily, and so more than one person in a household may be suffering from similar symptoms and both may be affected.

Often, sufferers are able to correlate the f rst sign of symptoms, coinciding with a trip overseas where they experienced a tummy bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. Australia is so close to the Indonesian countries it can be transmitted from, and Australians travel there often for their holidays, so imagine the amount of people coming back who could be infected and how it can be passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work.

Fortunately it is quite easy to address, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. I have seen patients who have suffered depression for four decades, and after treatment for one month have improved out of sight. Other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment.

Bacterial infections are just one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating depression, anxiety or ADHD. We have successfully treated hundreds of patients within months of beginning treatment. These are not conditions with unknown cause like many believe, and can be resolved quickly.

Aussie bartender takes on the worldHIGH-TECH TOYS FLYING OFF THE SHELVES

The lights on Barbie’s dress react to sound, and music Furby needs to be fed via

an iPhone app. Meanwhile, the LeapPad 2 is being marketed as a ‘child friendly learning tablet’.

How do you make a toy attractive to the modern child? One way is to make it interactive.

“The trend this year is old analogue toys becoming digital,” Target toys business manager Anthony Grice says.

“A lot of the products right across the business – in preschool or boys’ or girls’ toys and outdoor – have elements of electronics coming in to them.”

Even classic board games and the old-fashioned diary have had a makeover. Monopoly now comes with bank cards you swipe for

[ N A T I O N A L N E W S ]

purchases, Twister can be connected to an MP3 player to add music, and the Password Journal has sound alerts and a voice-activated lock.

“Kids these days are really tech savvy,” Grice says.

“Toy manufacturers are thinking ‘how can I add a digital element to an analogue product?’.”

Among the hot sellers at Target this year are Hasbro’s My Giggle Monkey Pet for girls, Lego’s Chima and City ranges for boys, and LeapFrog’s LeapPad 2 for preschoolers.

Toys related to movie releases and TV shows, such as Superman’s Man of Steel, Monsters University and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are also popular, Grice says.

Big W merchandise manager toys Teresa Rendo says while many toys are becoming more and more sophisticated, children still get a kick out of classic toys.

“Dress-ups, the toy kitchen, Lego, action f gures and the dolls house are still popular.

Top sellers at Big W include Monster High dolls for girls and toys related to movie releases for boys.

The modern parent no longer needs to simply make sure they have batteries to make their child’s new toy move or talk – they need to check their Wi-Fi connection too. AAP

Australia’s Luke Ashton might be squinting during the race for bartender of the year in Europe next month.

Considering an Aussie, Tim Philips, took home the top title last year, the spotlight is set to be on the Australian bartender when he heads to the French Riviera for the global Diageo Reserve World Class competition.

“I don’t necessarily know if there’s going to be pressure applied to me, but certainly perhaps to a certain extent I’ll be in the spotlight,” Ashton says. “I think they’re probably going to look to what Australia’s bringing to the table.”

The global f nal will take place from July 4 to 9 on a cruise ship that sets sail on the French Riviera in Nice and Monte Carlo and f nishes up in Barcelona.

Ashton, from Vasco, a bar in Sydney’s Surry Hills, will duke it out against 49 other bartenders around the world over the course of the f ve days.

But the ever-modest Australian may have trouble being known as bartender of the year.

Even though he battled it out for three days against more than 200 of Australia’s best bartenders to be crowned the national winner, and even though he says it’s amazing to have won, Ashton’s not exactly comfortable with the title.

“There’s a lot of people out there

AA

P

that I do admire and I think are potentially better bartenders than myself as well.”

He says it’s “lovely” to be the winner, but “I don’t think it’s the only measuring stick out there”.

“I’ve only been bartending professionally going on four years now (and) I think any bartender worth their salt will tell you it’s a constant learning process.”

Along with the title of Australian bartender of the year, Ashton was also awarded a whopping $100,000 to go toward opening his own bar. AAP

WHALING CASE KICKS OFF

LONDON – It’s been a long time coming, but fi nally Australian lawyers will stand

before the 16 judges of the International Court of Justice and ask them to ban Japan from harpooning whales in the Southern Ocean.

Australia put its opening argument in The Hague last week, more than six years after then opposition leader Kevin Rudd pledged that a future Labor government would take legal action against Tokyo.

Under Julia Gillard, Labor has pushed ahead with its case that Japan’s scientif c whaling program is contrary to its international obligations under the whaling convention.

“We want commercial whaling

[ W O R L D N E W S ]

to stop and that includes the so-called scientif c whaling program that Japan has been carrying on for many years,” says Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus.

Norway and Iceland conduct commercial whaling but Japan insists its program is purely scientif c while making no secret that the resulting meat ends up on plates.

Japan killed around 6500 Antarctic minke whales between 1987 and 2005 after the International Whaling Commission’s ban on commercial whaling.

That compares with only 840 whales for research purposes in the 31 years before the 1986 moratorium, court papers state.

A further 2500 minke whales were killed between 2005 and 2009 under the JARPA II program.

California – A huge-headed, duck-footed mix of beagle, boxer and basset hound was the upset winner at the 25th annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.

Walle, a four-year-old mutt from Chico, California who was entered at the last minute, was judged most unsightly of 30 dogs at the Northern California competition on Friday.

“This dog looked like he’s been Photoshopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals,” judge Brian Sobel says.

The contest gets worldwide attention, with media from around the world travelling to Petaluma, north of San Francisco.

Walle overcame the dominance in recent years by nearly hairless chihuahuas, Chinese cresteds, or combinations of the two.

Owner Tammie Barbee got the

AP

dog when he was three months old.“People come up to me and say

that dog is not right,” Barbee says, “but I love him.”

Judges says the judges were especially impressed by Walle’s bizarre waddle of a walk.

Walle wins $US1500 (about $1600) and will make several network TV appearances. AP

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke

LONDON – Three chefs who cook for some of the biggest rock bands on the planet have lifted the lid on the eating habits of the stars.

The cooks reveal Minogue’s meal of choice while on tour is beef tournedos with olives, a French steak dish. Giles Broe, who cooks for Minogue, says the dish is high in protein. “Kylie is often exhausted after a show – this is the perfect protein-rich pick-me-up,” Broe’s told British magazine The Sunday Times.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke ‘snacks’ on sumac spiced aubergine and Lebanese salsa sliders before a gig, while his bandmates enjoy tucking in to partridge, quince and ginger gyoza.

Rockers Muse choose to eat wild

Today’s rock stars shun booze and cigarettes for gourmet meals rabbit risotto with smoked pancetta and fresh sage for their backstage fare.

Chef Sarah Muir, who looks after Radiohead’s on-tour catering, says the exotic dishes show how pop stars’ tastes have become more ref ned: “When I started touring in the early 1990s with heavy metal bands, most of the groups lived off bottles of Jack Daniel’s, fast food and cigarettes.”

“Back then, you’d throw an oven in the back of a van, drive to the venue and knock up a basic shepherd’s pie. But gruelling tour schedules mean some artists are away from home for over a year.

“It’s my job to ensure they can still shimmy into their skinny jeans, go out on stage and give it their all.” AAP

From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living

with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare

Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of

life for Australians with a signifi cant and permanent disability,

and for their families and carers too.

What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia?DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised

support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s

immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people

with disability to have choice and control over their supports.

It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support

can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families

and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather

than only once people reach crisis.

Who is eligible?DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a signifi cant

and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday

activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to

intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment,

or a psychiatric condition.

Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have

met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.

Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.

When does it all begin?DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because

it is a big change to the current system.

Air pollution becomes Asia’s migraineAS ASIA GRAPPLES WITH ITS WORST EVER AIR POLLUTION CRISIS, HEALTH AUTHORITIES

FEAR THE DEATH TOLL WILL CONTINUE TO RISE.

Air pollution has become a curse for millions of city dwellers in Asia, posing a mounting risk to the very young and

very old, pregnant women and people with heart and respiratory problems, say experts.

“The levels of pollution in parts of China, India and elsewhere in Asia are just astronomically high and the health impacts are dramatic,” says Bob O’Keefe of the Health Effects Institute (HEI), a US not-for-prof t research agency. “This is a threat that was really underestimated in the past.”

This week, Singapore grappled with record levels of air pollution, unleashed by land f res in neighbouring Indonesia. In January, pollution in Beijing went off the scale of an air-quality monitor at the US embassy, and the city’s hospital admissions surged by 20 per cent. In August 2012, Hong Kong suffered its highest-recorded pollution, prompting the territory to urge vulnerable population groups to stay indoors.

HEI estimates, derived from an exceptionally detailed analysis called the Global Burden of Disease, say that some 3.2 million people around the world died prematurely from outdoor air pollution in 2010. China and India together accounted for some 2.5 million of these deaths, sharing the tally roughly equally.

The death toll in China has risen by a third over 20 years, but worse pollution is only part of the reason. As China becomes more prosperous, its citizens are attaining greater ages, reaching

70 or 80 years or beyond – when people become more vulnerable to heart and respiratory stress from air pollution.

A study published last August in the journal Nature Climate Change estimated that forest and land f res in South-East Asia kill an additional 15,000 people annually from air pollution during the El Nino weather phenomenon, when drier soil often causes blazes to rage out of control.

An investigation by US researchers, published in February, found that among three million births recorded in nine countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, there was a clear link between worse air pollution and lower birth weight. Low birth weight – when a newborn weighs less than 2.5 kilos – is associated with ill health, premature death and cognitive problems in later life.

Health experts point to two main dangers from air pollution. One concerns particulate matter (PM) – the sooty specks emitted from fossil fuels, forest f res and land clearances.

Cathryn Tonne, at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, points the f nger at so-called PM2.5 – particles measuring 2.5 micrometres across or less, or 30 times smaller than a human hair. Generated mainly by the burning of coal and oil for power stations, and diesel and petrol for transport, these are many times more perilous than PM10 particles, which are 10 micrometres across, Tonne and colleagues found

in research into heart deaths in England and Wales.“We found that for every 10 micrograms per

cubic metre in PM2.5, there was a 20 per cent increase in the death rate,” Tonne says.

By way of comparison, the WHO has a recommended maximum of 10 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic metre as an annual exposure – and a maximum over a 24-hour period of 25 micrograms per cubic metre. In the United States, the annual PM2.5 limit is a recommended 12 micrograms per cubic metre, and in the European Union (EU), it is 25 micrograms.

In Beijing’s smog scare in January, though, levels reached a whopping 993 micrograms per cubic metre – almost 40 times the WHO’s advised safety limit.

The other big danger from air pollution is ozone, a triple molecule of oxygen that in the stratosphere is a vital shield against DNA-damaging sunlight, but at ground level – where it is typically created by a reaction between nitrogen oxides in traff c fumes and sunlight – it is an irritant for the airways.

Short-term spikes in ground-level ozone have long been linked to heart attacks and severe asthma. But research conducted in the US, published in 2009, suggests that cumulative exposure is also a big risk factor. The probability of dying from respiratory disease rose by as much as 50 per cent as a result of long-exposure to high concentrations of ozone. AFP

Students offer support to businessCREATIVITY ON THE MOVEA team of students from the University of the Sunshine Coast is helping a Currimundi travel pillow company expand globally.

The f ve business students – Joshua Crisp, Eleanor Berry, Shannon Sutton, Ashleigh Baker and Rhys Hurren – were judged to have made the best presentation of a plan for TravelComfort by students in the third-year subject, Small Business Development and New Venture Management.

USC Business lecturer Leone Cameron says more than 70 students completed the 12-week project, with the top three team presentations earning prizes and the client gaining details about some exciting business opportunities.

“The product they focused their plans on was a travel pillow, which was new to the market and manufactured to provide total lateral head support,” Cameron says.

Students met with the business owner regularly to understand the challenges and opportunities

After 17 years on the Coast, advertising agency Swiss Creative has relocated to

new premises in Mooloolaba. Founder and director Suzy

Werry, who was born and raised in Switzerland, says given the Coast economy is moving ahead with major projects the timing is right to relocate from Kunda Park to a more central location. “What I have noticed is that conf dence is going up slowly, but it is going up,” Werry says, adding that increased conf dence is creating a need for local businesses to assess

that are facing the business. TravelComfort owner Prue Kelly

says she is delighted by the level of engagement and support she received from USC. “The creativity, inventiveness and professionalism of the majority of the USC students I met exceeded my expectations,” she says. “They suggested ideas and opportunities I would never have considered previously and I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the f nal business development plan presentations.”

their marketing and advertising needs.

“We’ve already noticed the increase in walk-in traff c. Here we’ve had a couple of nearby businesses set up meetings to help their business expand – and we don’t even have the signage up yet,” she says.

Marketing and advertising specialist ADFX has also relocated to new premises on Brisbane Road.

Manager Kelly Thomas says her team had outgrown its Buderim off ce. “We’ve actually grown in that period since the GFC,” Thomas says, adding that while the agency has been servicing many national clients, she is increasingly working with local businesses looking to set themselves apart from their competition.

“From a business perspective it’s still really tough,” she says. “If you look at businesses on the Coast, nine out of 10 people don’t have a business plan or a marketing plan.

“A lot of people are now looking at being smarter or more strategic.”

WHAT WAS THE RBA THINKING?

The Reserve Bank of Australia recently released the minutes of its June board

meeting where it chose to leave offi cial interest rates on hold at 2.75 per cent.

A closer examination of these minutes provides a valuable insight into how the bank thinks the Australian economy is tracking, particularly in light of recent interest rate reductions.

It would appear that further cuts to off cial interest rates are probably in the pipeline, but the timing of any cuts is uncertain. The RBA believes that earlier cuts have generally had

the desired effect because the unemployment rate has stabilised, consumer and business conf dence has improved and there has been an increasing demand for home loans. While the RBA acknowledges that the Australian dollar is still too high, it is now seven per cent lower relative to when the last interest rate cut was made in May.

These indicators imply that there is no urgency to cut the off cial interest rate just yet. It appears that while the RBA is happy with the current rate for the time being, it has indicated that there may be scope for further cuts later this year.

There is a big challenge lurking on the horizon that the RBA, and all of Australia for that matter, is anxiously monitoring. This is the impending reduction in the level of

investment in new mining projects. Locally, the Sunshine Coast and surrounds is home to many f y-in-f y-out mining workers and as a result may be adversely affected by a decrease in spending by mining companies.

As this reduction in mining investment happens, perhaps around the end of the calendar year, we will need to see growth in other areas of the economy improve to make up the shortfall. During this time we believe the RBA will give the economy a little prod by making another interest rate cut.

OUR MUST-HAVE HAIR PRODUCTS

Jemma – I am using Schwarzkopf Professional BC Bonacure Oil Miracle Gold Shimmer Treatment on my hair at the moment. It is now my new favourite hair product as it nourishes my locks in this winter weather and smells rather nice too.

Morgan – I love and honestly can’t live without my Batiste Tropical dry shampoo. Being gen Y, I rarely f nd the time to let my hair dry naturally and need a little help in between washes (which are every four to f ve days). The product smells great and is ridiculously easy to use. Spray where you feel necessary, then brush. I carry around a pocket size, then keep the larger size at home.

Leigh – My hair is naturally curly and prone to frizzing. I use Juuce for Thirsty Hair ‘Shaypa’ wax in

Jemma’spick

f rm hold. When I want my hair to be piecey and def ned, I separate the curls and rub a small amount into the ends. The scent is fresh, tropical and not overpowering. I like that Juuce products are Australian made and owned, and not tested on animals.

Kath – Spiral Organic Coconut Oil is a really good treatment for your hair and leaves it shiny and soft. You can also use it to treat nits. Cover your hair in apple cider vinegar until it dries (this dissolves the nit’s glue). Then comb through some coconut oil and leave it in all day if possible.

Jarna – John Frieda Beach Blonde’s Ocean Waves. Sadly, this product has been discontinued but it’s a great curl enhancer, not greasy or heavy and it smells amazing. You can still buy it on eBay and there

are a bunch of websites with recipes on how to make your own version of this product from sea water. I still have my bottle from 2007 – I imagine it’s well past its shelf life, but it’s half full and I’m not complaining. If you can’t f nd this product, I always f nd plain salt water is what makes my hair look the best.

Denture troubles? We can help

As a dental prosthestist, if I had a dollar for every time I have heard a patient say, “The upper denture is good but the lower denture moves” I could be retired.

If you wear full dentures and you have heard yourself say this then there is an alternative – Implant Retained Overdentures. This is where titanium screws can be inserted into your jaw by a trained dentist and then a denture made to fi t over the top. This enables the patient a much greater control of the denture, stopping nearly all the movement of that troublesome denture.

This could allow us to make the upper denture without having to cover the palate.

It also enables you to chew better than with your conventional denture and eat food you never thought possible.

If you wear a partial denture that is held in place by unsightly clasps

– it may also be possible to have a partial denture that is retained by implants. Placement of implants in the appropriate position can make this possible.

They can be life changing to someone who struggles with their ordinary dentures. All at a price that is becoming more and more affordable.

We work alongside your dentist to provide a cost effective solution. Whether Implants are an option for you will have to be assessed by your dentist, however if you would like to fi nd out more, visit Advance Oral today for your free consultation with our experienced Prosthetist to assess and discuss your denture options. It may be possible to use your existing dentures – modifying them to accommodate the implants.

A new full upper denture and a new full lower implant retained over denture could cost as little as - $3000.*Conditions apply

Age spots, also known as liver spots, begin appearing on the skin at around the

age of 40, especially on the backs of the hands and the face.

They are usually f at areas of discolouration ranging in colour from a light to dark brown.

In the majority of cases, age spots pose no threat to health, unless they are obscuring a skin cancer. However, some people consider them an unattractive a tell-tale sign of ageing.

Medical procedures such as electrosurgery, laser treatment and cryotherapy (freezing) are effective in treating age spots, but if you don’t fancy a trip to the doctor, try these natural home remedies:• Plant some aloe vera in your garden

and rub the gel from inside the leaf onto the age spots twice a day for two months.

• Rub some buttermilk on the spots each day – the lactic acid is said to help fade them.

• Once a day, mix a teaspoon of natural yoghurt with a teaspoon of

honey and rub it on to your age spots. Let it dry and wash it off after 30 minutes. It works as a natural skin bleach.

• The Chinese herb gotu kola is said to clear up age spots in just a few days, because it stimulates collagen and the production of new cells.

• Rub in some lemon juice each day – the citric acid acts as a bleach.

• Try rubbing onion and garlic on the spots each day. Leave it for f ve minutes and rinse off. Repeat each day for two weeks.

Popular liquid breakfast products including Sanitarium’s Up & Go and Kellogg’s breakfast drinks make dodgy nutritional claims, says consumer group Choice.

Choice says an investigation into 23 liquid breakfast products including Devondale Fast Start, Dairy Farmers Oats Express and Aldi Goldenvale Quick Start, has found they make false claims about being high in f bre or a good source of protein.

“Shonky claims on liquid breakfasts such as ‘high in f bre’, ‘f bre for digestive health’, and ‘goodness of three grains’ is a cause for concern,” Choice spokesman Tom Godfrey says.

“Liquid breakfasts have on average 1.5 per cent f bre, which is well below the 10 per cent benchmark for high f bre. It is grains away from the 39.5 per cent f bre offered by some bran cereals.”

The investigation also found that 10 of the 23 products investigated have more than 23 grams of sugar

Brekkie drinks make dodgy claims: Choice

per serve – roughly the same as a chocolate bar.

“If its energy you are after, the breakfast drinks Choice reviewed ranged from 700 kilojoules to 912 kilojoules and fall short of a regular meal that comes in at 2000 kilojoules,” Godfrey says.

Choice says liquid breakfasts are a growing category in the supermarket aisles, with Santarium’s Up & Go ruling the market since its launch 15 years ago, selling 34 million litres through supermarkets in the past year alone. AAP

when buying hearing aids

1. Interview a hearing professional. “The number one thing to remember is that the value you get out of your hearing aid is based on the skills and abilities of the hearing health professional. The professional service is a determining factor in the successful outcome of the f tting and also the degree of satisfaction from the performance of hearing aids.

2. Match your hearing aids to your specif c hearing loss. Your hearing loss is as unique as your f ngerprint. Two people with a similar degree of loss will process sound differently depending on the cause of the loss and length of time the problem has gone untreated.

3. Try before you buy. Ask for a demonstration of the hearing aids recommended for you. Even better, trial the hearing aids in your environment, this is the only way to really know if the hearing aids are suitable for you.

4. Know all the options before you purchase. Your hearing professional should work with a range of hearing aid styles and brands, and offer you a needs assessment appointment to determine which products are suitable for your unique lifestyle, hearing loss and budget. Be careful of providers who promote one particular brand only without discussing other options: this may not be the most suitable hearing aid for your needs.

5. Seek the best aftercare to get the best performance from your hearing aids. No matter how state-of-the-art your hearing aids may be, they will not address your hearing loss if they are not regularly checked and adjusted to your changing needs. An aftercare program is an absolute must!

MALTY MOMENTS

PREVIEWHot 91.1 FM breakfast host Todd Widdicombe gives his opinion on the best brews of the week.

Hip hip hoorah, raise a glass friends, it fi nally looks like we could be back on track

with our Aussie cricket team. Let’s face it pup, Clarke’s hair has had way more highlights than our cricketers of late.

This week’s appointment of new coach Darren Lehman is a grouse step towards reclaiming the top spot in world cricket. Why wouldn’t it be? We’ll now be led by a beer-guzzling, unf t, chain-smoking bloke called ‘boof’. A true Aussie, showing plenty of guts, mostly through his skin tight Aussie shirt, no less. This is a guy that def nitely irons his team polo over a wok.

If you cast your mind back to the championship teams of the ’80s and ’90s, you’ll notice the lads were less metro and more man. It wasn’t about wine spritzers, sports sponsorships and hair gel, it was all about the beers.

We’re all aware of Boony’s legendary ‘magic 52’, where the keg on legs downed 52 cans on a f ight between Sydney and London. We were world beaters back then, back

when Warnie was a tubby spin king and hadn’t yet bought a new face.

Over these decades of being victorious, the one thing that bound the lads together was a penchant for pies and beer. In fact, beer is a common link to all championships won by Aussies over the last 50 years. America’s cup in ’83 – beer was there. Pat Cash, Wimbledon ’87 – beer was there. If only Bernard Tomic would put down the vodka and passionfruit Breezer and pick up a lager, he might win a tennis match. I’m banging on, I know, but you catch my drift, right?

In life, most men are looking for a woman who can cook for them, a woman who likes passionate lovemaking, a woman who can laugh out loud and a woman who can be the mother of their children. Of course, all men know these four women can never meet.

This is where this week’s brew comes in, from the James Squire malt shovel brewery comes Four Wives. As with every Squire’s brew, this one has a good yarn attached, paying tribute to James Squire’s penchant for the

ladies. Not only was Squiresy a genius master brewer, but also a sensational ‘pants man’, so this beer is dedicated to his ability to always have a few birds on the go.

The Four Wives is a fair dinkum pilsner, light on complexity but full of that trademark wheat aroma and malty sweet taste. She’s got a real creamy mouth feel, with a light citrus f avour mixed with some notable saaz hop action in the f nish, too.

My 80-year-old mum Jen is a bandit for a pilsner and this is easily her favourite. Four Wives isn’t a brew I’d labour on all night, but if you’re keen to knock the top off a couple of frothy chops and try something different, it’s a goer. I give it three out of f ve thumbs up.

Queues of 200 people have formed outside the Dominique Ansel Bakery in Soho, New York, from 3.30am each day since the launch of the ‘cronut’ on May 18.

The half-doughnut, half-croissant invented by chef Dominique Ansel has left the Big Apple in a frenzy.

Ansel’s revolutionary confection is a marriage of French and American food cultures and offers the delicate puff pastry of a traditional croissant shaped into a round doughnut, which is then deep-fried, f lled with cream, rolled in maple sugar and coated with a light glaze.

To satisfy the largest possible number of customers, patrons are restricted to two cronuts each. At f rst, customers could snaff e six at a time, but Ansel restricted it to two after discovering the cronuts he sold for $5 each were changing hands on the internet at up to $50 a piece. AAP

Australia’s best loved singer songwriter, Paul Kelly, is coming to the Sunshine

Coast in late July as part of his national Spring and Fall tour.

Released last October, Spring and Fall is Kelly’s 19th studio album, and he recently told a US audience that the album is a “song cycle, which is just a fancy way of saying – if you listen to the songs in order they tell a story. Each song links to the next and the whole piece is a love story told from multiple points of view.”

Kelly’s band will feature his nephew, Dan Kelly, on guitar and vocals; J. Walker, who co-produced and played on the album; Zoe Hauptmann (who recently performed on the Finn and Kelly tour) on bass and Bree Van Reyk on drums. Supported by Australian hip-hop MC and producer Urthboy, the band will be touring cities and towns around Australia performing the album in its entirety, followed by a generous selection of older songs, which will change from night to night and will include well-known songs and a few surprises.

HALCYON LANDING SCORES ITS FIRST CENTURY

[ R E T I R E M E N T L I V I N G ]

One of the region’s fastest selling over-50s lifestyle communities recently reached another milestone, this time

welcoming the 100th (and 101st) home owners Peter and Jill Corish.

The couple, who are from Mornington in Victoria, say they are looking forward to the switch from the cold weather to the warmth of the Coast.

Halcyon project director Chris Carley says that to celebrate the milestone a special surprise was planned for the Corishes. “When they turned up they weren’t quite expecting the welcome we had in store for them with almost the entire community turning out to toast their arrival,” he says.

“Then Peter and Jill were whisked away on a Harley trike for an unforgettable ride through the Hinterland to see the sights.”

The Bli Bli community has been popular with baby boomers – the f rst stage was quickly snapped up.

“Buyers have applauded our transparent f nancial model, unrivalled eight-star home

energy ratings, strong lifestyle focus and the fact there are no exit fees or no rentals allowed,” says Carley.

When completed, Halcyon Landing will consist of 170 homes bordered by a walking trail and extensive parklands. The community will also feature a recreational precinct with facilities such as a championship-size bowling green, tennis court, pool, spa, work shed and more.

Gated security and caravan and boat storage is appealing to buyers after a lock-up and leave home, such as the Corishes, who are keen caravanners.

A super change for retireesArrangements allowing Australians and New Zealanders to move across the ditch with their superannuation without paying fees have been fi nalised by the respective governments, Superannuation Minister Bill Shorten says.

From July 1, the trans-Tasman retirement savings portability scheme will help thousands of people who cross the Tasman Sea each year to consolidate their retirement savings in their country of residence without paying fees and charges on accounts in two countries.

“This scheme is an important step towards removing a barrier to labour mobility between the two countries, and supports our closer economic relations with New Zealand,” Shorten says.

About 50,000 New Zealanders moved to Australia in the past year, and around 16,000 people living in Australia moved to New Zealand.

Currently, Australians and New Zealanders working in Australia cannot take their superannuation with them when they permanently leave Australia.

Australians moving to New Zealand, and New Zealanders returning home will now be able to consolidate their Australian benef ts with their New Zealand retirement savings.

Similarly, New Zealanders who move to Australia will be able to bring their New Zealand retirement savings with them to Australia. AAP

SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO?

I am always fascinated by people’s reactions when I speak with them about retirement communities. Most people are pretty open-minded about

living in a retirement community, although some people completely dismiss the idea, as they think it means f nally admitting they are getting old.

However, for many of us, when our working lives wind down and the kids leave home, one very important question that must be answered is whether to stay in your existing house, or downsize to a smaller house or a retirement community. This is not a simple decision and the answer varies depending on your personal situation.

So let’s work through some of the questions.

[ R E T I R E M E N T L I V I N G ]

Should I stay in my existing home?Financially, you are almost always better off staying in your existing home. Buying and selling property incurs signif cant costs such as stamp duty, moving costs and agents’ commissions, which can take many years of capital growth to offset. Even if your yard is too large and you need to get a mowing service in to do the gardens once a month, or a cleaner to help you vacuum your house, it can still be worth staying put.

I think you should consider moving if:• you are lonely,• you fear for your safety, or have security

concerns about your house or neighbourhood,• you do not drive or do not have a car,• you are bored,• you have an older property and it is likely that

you are going to have to spend some major dollars in the near future on items like roof ng, f ooring, plumbing or wiring, or

• your property presents access issues – it is multi-storey, situated on a steep slope or has too many steps.

(Note here that I have not recommended that you

PREVIEWRichard Andrews explores the options for retirees considering a move.

downsize to unlock the equity in your house. Most banks offer arrangements now where you can use the equity locked up in your house while staying as a resident and owner in the house.)

Some of the benefi ts of staying in your existing house include:• you avoid the costs of moving, • you avoid the stress of moving,• you don’t have to leave a familiar family home

with all of those memories, and • you don’t have to move away from your

established community and support networks.

The disadvantages of staying include:• it is likely your home is too large for your

current needs,• you are restricted in your ability to access the

equity in your property,• you probably have more maintenance issues,• you miss the opportunity for a fresh start in

a better location, probably with a brand new home.

So if you think moving out is the right move for you, it’s time to move on to the next question!

[ R E T I R E M E N T L I V I N G ]

Should I move into a retirement community or just a smaller house?Let me make one point clear up front – a retirement community is about lifestyle. If you are bored, lonely or alone, or fear for your safety, I recommend you consider a retirement community because it will enrich your life from just about every perspective.

However, if you already enjoy a busy retirement with a big social network and lots of activity, you could address all of your concerns simply by moving to a newer, smaller, more secure and better located home. You would also want to be in good health, or have access to an emergency alarm pendant so if you do have an accident, you can call for help easily.

The benefi ts of moving into a retirement community as opposed to a normal residential property are as follows:• you get to live in a community of similarly aged

and like-minded residents,• you occupy a home built for easy access and low

maintenance,• you have onsite management and in some cases

meals and medical care,• you are able to enjoy facilities such as a gym,

pool, club house and village bus, without having to worry about the cleaning or maintenance of these areas,

• resident restrictions such as minimum entry ages and no pets mean less stressful living,

• you get an instant social life and network of friends, and

• the complex will provide you with better security and support than you would f nd in a standard suburban house or apartment.

The disadvantages of living in a retirement community include:• typically it is a more expensive living option,

with higher costs incurred to buy, occupy and sell,

• homes in retirement communities are usually

smaller properties, with little or no backyard,• there is lack of choice of

locations, as well as the type of house,

• you will encounter higher density living, which can sometimes feel cramped,

• typically there is a no pets allowed policy,

• there is sometimes a lack of diversity among residents, with little age variation, and

• generally there are poor f nancial outcomes for residents upon exit.

Many people are still f xed to the negative view that retirement communities are places where old people sit around drinking cups of tea and waiting for the inevitable. However, nothing could be further from the truth – retirement villages are vibrant communities of active people who love getting the most out of life in retirement.

MAKE/MODELHOLDEN BARINA CD-X

DETAILS Four-door, fi ve-seat compact sedan with 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission.

TECH STUFF1.6-litre four-cylinder engine produces 85KW at 6000rpm, 155Nm at 4000 rpm; six-speed automatic transmission has Active Select manual function.

FEATURESFront, side and curtain airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with brakeforce distribution and traction control; leather trim, MyLink infotainment system incorporating Bluetooth music streaming and web-based satellite navigation service; heated front seats; electric windows and mirrors; reversing sensors; alloy wheels.

THIRST6.3L/100KM (offi cial combined fi gure).

VERDICT An Aussie favourite is bigger and better.

BOTTOM LINE From $15,990 (CD hatch with manual transmission); as tested $20,990 (CD-X with auto transmission) plus on-road costs.

It’s been part of Australian lives for the best part of two decades, so it’s hardly surprising Holden’s little

Barina has fi nally grown up.The baby hatchback that burst onto

the scene with those catchy ‘Beep Beep Barina’ ads back in the ’80s is, these days, an altogether bigger, more impressive machine.

For the f rst time, the Barina is available as a sedan as well as a hatch.

Actually, there are now two Barinas; this one and the so-called Barina Spark – a smaller, cheaper and,

WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP dare I say it, nastier machine that shares the familiar nameplate.

Holden really should have thought twice about that name-sharing tactic because the ‘real’ Barina is a pretty good machine that, in most regards, stands well above its namesake.

We drove the new Barina sedan in CD-X form – a higher-end version that brings with it such inclusions as leather trim on the seats and a smart-looking seven-inch electronic touch-screen system.

Holden’s marketing campaign for

the Barina has focused largely on this system, called MyLink, which allows you to access various electronic functions via app-style icons on the screen. The system links with Bluetooth compatible smartphones to add all manner of connectivity via the car’s centre console rather than juggling phones while trying to drive.

When streamed through 3G or 4G smartphones, the device will also allow access to the web-based satellite navigation system BrinGo, which Holden claims gives low-cost sat-nav

capability to the Barina. You can also stream music via the internet through the car’s audio system.

It’s clever stuff and perfectly aimed at the younger buyer prof le, which has always been the Barina’s bread and butter.

The addition of the sedan version, though, is likely to widen the Barina’s appeal to young families or as a second car for an older demographic. Mostly, it f ts that bill very well.

Our CD-X test car comes with a price tag of $20,990, although it’s possible to get yourself into a Barina for as little as $15,990 (the Spark is even cheaper but let’s not go there).

I suspect that’s where Holden will continue to win most of its buyers. The CD-X’s pricing leaves it in competition with the likes of Volkswagen’s Polo, and its German rival the Opel Astra, which probably sit a rung or two higher up the quality scale.

Still, even in that company the Barina has its appeal. It’s impressively roomy for a small car – decent legroom and shoulder space in the front and back.

At the entry-level end of this segment, the Barina comes up against the fast-rising Korean models like Kia’s spunky Rio and Hyundai’s i-30, so the task doesn’t get any easier for Holden.

So how does the Barina, curiously enough built in Korea, stack up?

Well, its 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine lacks a little in low-down

power, but once it gets spinning, delivers more than adequate performance.

Despite its modest size, the engine was ready to respond when acceleration was called for, and the six-speed auto chose ratios with assurance and gave the little Holden a loping gait at cruising speed.

It achieves a modest combined thirst of 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres (the sedan drinks slightly less than the hatch, and the auto is thriftier than the manual), which is an improvement of about 10 per cent on the previous model.

As you might expect, the Barina is right at home buzzing around the city, where its light steering and nimble handling are seen to advantage. It also offers excellent visibility for lane-changing and squeezing into tight parking spaces.

Not quite as expected, though, was how well-performed this little machine was in highway conditions, where it cruised solidly and quietly with a sturdy road presence.

The Barina is also quite a handsome-looking thing, ref ecting

the crisp styling of its big-brother Holden Cruze, further set off by big alloy wheels on our test machine.

The cockpit is generally well presented with nicely textured surfaces and smart-looking switchgear, but with one exception: Holden boasts about the ‘motorcycle style’ instrument panel, but to me it just looks cheap and I’d much prefer a car-style one. Perhaps the only redeeming feature is the big, clear digital display of your speed, which at least removes any excuse for breaking the legal limits.

Otherwise, the cabin is serviceable and ergonomically sound, with wheel-mounted controls for audio, cruise control and the like.

The trip computer is useful if not comprehensive.

The CD-X kit also includes reverse parking sensors, 17-inch alloys, heated front seats and electric power steering.

One f nal surprise with the Barina was the generous boot space, which I suspect way outstrips that of the hatch variant and might attract a few additional buyers to the sedan shape.

NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL A SMART CAR

[ M O T O R I N G ]

Otto has one of the toughest jobs at German car component company

Continental.The crash-test dummy is

regularly hung from a cable across the roadway on a test circuit and positioned so that his feet are touching the ground.

All day long, speeding cars bear down on him and although most brake, or take avoiding action in the nick of time, Otto sometimes gets slammed against the bonnet of a vehicle.

Thanks to Otto’s pliable nature, he can cope with such mishaps because he could well be helping to usher in an automotive revolution.

The cars that drive into Otto are extraordinary. A driver sits at the controls of each but does not do any driving.

Continental is testing fully automated driving that would make more than 125 years of manned

motor car history look as old-fashioned as winding a watch.

Fully automated driving on the motorway could be a reality by 2025, says Continental, leaving drivers to concentrate on other activities – thanks to such high-tech applications as on-board cameras, infrared and laser.

The road to fully automated driving is a long and winding one.

“Before we can realise fully automated driving – even on test tracks – we have a good deal of research and development work ahead of us,” says Alfred Eckert, who is in charge of the futuristic project at the company.

Movers and shakers in Germany’s car sector are convinced automation will be a key element of future driving, although the move towards it will be progressive rather than sudden. The motive is to make driving safer and more comfortable.

Driver assistance systems are an

Broberg, Volvo’s senior safety advisor. “However, we will take the f rst steps towards our leadership aim by introducing the f rst features with autonomous steering in the All-New Volvo XC90, which will be revealed at the end of 2014. There are, however, nightmarish aspects to be considered – technical glitches that might cause deaths of drivers and passengers or interference by cyber-terrorists who might hack into automated driving systems.

Legislation would have to be changed before automated driving could become a reality and will rely on the reliable f ow of data. AAP

integral part of many modern cars, so partial automation is the logical next step.

Wolf-Henning Scheider from Bosch, one of Continental’s competitors, believes sensor-driven warning systems will quickly trickle down into cheaper cars from the luxury end of the market.

Meanwhile, Volvo Car Group has developed an ingenious concept for autonomous parking. The concept car f nds and parks in a vacant space by itself, without the driver inside.

“The autonomous parking and platooning technologies are still being developed,” says Thomas

Toyota shows sporty kiddy carJapanese carmaker Toyota has come up with a sporty, open-top concept designed to bring children and parents together in the age of smartphones and internet games.

The Camatte57s is a toy-like vehicle that can be driven by children, too. The concept was displayed in the Kids Life Zone at the recent International Tokyo Toy Show 2013 rather than on a car show stand.

Pedals and seats can be adjusted, which means young children can make an early start learning to drive, away from the public highway.

Adults can assist with steering and braking, thanks to the positioning of the steering wheel and the adjustability of the brakes and seats.

The bodywork consists of 57 detachable panels made of lightweight material f nished in a range of colours and designs, hence the f gure suff x in the name.

Power comes from an electric motor and seats are closely arranged in a triangular conf guration with one front seat and two rear seats to emphasise family intimacy and to ease communication.

The name Camette is based on the Japanese word for ‘care’ meant to signify ‘caring for others’. The ‘s’ stands for the Japanese word ‘sawaru’, which means to touch.

Toyota says the name ref ects the idea that people should feel more in touch with each other and with vehicles in general.

Britain zooming aheadBritain may overtake France as Europe’s second largest automotive producer within the next f ve years if British car sales and exports maintain their strong growth, according to industry executives.

“All the indications appear to be saying yes, Britain will be second in a few years,” Tim Abbott, managing director of German carmaker BMW’s UK operations, says.

“It will be about the demand for the cars made in the UK, but that looks to be there judging by the recent performance of the likes of Jaguar, Land Rover, Nissan and BMW.”

Savvy styling will get your home ready for sale

Cover Story46

45.indd 1 6/25/2013 1:06:37 PM

COVER STORY

It is widely agreed that there are three essential factors which greatly infl uence the sale of your property – the agent, the

price and the presentation. A successful sale has these three elements in

perfect combination, complementing each other and working together to achieve a unif ed result.

When you decide to sell your house, you usually have a fair idea of what price you would like to achieve. This f gure can be based on what you would like, what you need, or what you think the home is worth in comparison to similar properties in the area.

You then f nd an agent whose style, appraisal and marketing strategy you like, and whose suggested asking price is close to the one you have in mind.

What follows is a quick tidy up of the yard, a good clean inside, a bunch of fresh f owers and you are ready for the photos.

A marketing plan is in place, as agreed to by you and the agent. This involves either a series of open homes or inspections, an auction or an offer, and f nally the negotiation and acceptance of the offer.

This sequence of events has all three essential factors, so what has changed? The answer is the face of real estate.

For a start, real estate agents are now up-skilling, re-evaluating and ref ning their methods to achieve the best results to meet the market demands. Likewise today’s buyers, who have a major inf uence on the price, have usually done a signif cant amount of research. Not only can they view properties listed for sale on real estate websites, but they also have access to industry reports on median house prices in their preferred suburbs, suburb prof les, predicted growth areas and recent sales.

The majority of buyers are looking for

a property that is well maintained and ready to move in to with a minimum of fuss.

With agents up-skilling and ref ning their methods and buyers researching, educating themselves and having higher expectations, the seller has one area left in which to make an impact – and that is presentation. That impact can be signif cant.

The way homes are presented to market has changed. The standard of presentation has been raised by a new professional in real estate – the pre-sales stylist.

Pre-sales styling is a unique industry specif cally aimed at enhancing a home’s features using proven methods and techniques, so the home can be presented to the market at its best.

Presentation is what creates f rst impressions. Research shows that you form a f rst impression within eight to 30 seconds, and because that f rst impression is vital to the successful sale of a home, it is far too important to be left to chance.

By paying attention to the details, you can greatly reduce the number of reasons a buyer can f nd to negotiate the asking price. Those negotiations usually start in the thousands and tens of thousands of dollars, so a small investment can help protect your greatest asset.

Pre-sales styling is like visual merchandising for your home. The three aims of visual merchandising are to attract, engage and motivate to purchase.

When it comes to your home, these aims are achieved by using elements such as colour,

lighting, attention to the f oor

plan and the way traff c is directed through that space, and sensory elements. By combining these elements, and more, in the right balance, the stylist is able to highlight the features of the home in order to present it for sale at its best.

A well-presented home will stand out from the others as there has been nothing left to chance and no detail overlooked. From the photos that appear in all aspects of the marketing of the home, you will present a consistent message. That high standard of

presentation continues through each open home, and increases the chances of attracting a broad pool of possible buyers who are able to see themselves living in the home and are motivated to purchase.

Pre-sales styling goes beyond decorating to become a very powerful tool in your marketing campaign. The skills a stylist uses for pre-sales styling are honed towards enabling buyers to see themselves living in the home. This is by no means a critique of your decorating taste and style – to give yourself the highest chance of achieve the best return on what is possibly your greatest asset, the way you present your home for sale needs to be different from the

The agent, the price and the presentation

Prepping your home for sale? Gone are the days when a quick tidy-up and some fresh f owers would cut it. Catherine Craig from Simple & Savvy styling explains how pre-sales styling can help you achieve the best sale price.

By paying attention to the details, you can greatly reduce the number of reasons a buyer can find to negotiate the asking price

Styling your home for sale involves more than

simply redecorating.

way you live in it. The focus needs to rest on the potential buyer.

Selling a home is documented as one of the major stresses we face in our lifetime. A pre-sales stylist can help alleviate a part of the stress and guide you through the process of presenting your home for sale.

When you work with a stylist you are able to choose from a number of services offered that best suit your needs and budget. These services start with a consultation, an individualised plan and styling

suggestions using what you have already through to a full staging with rental furniture, with many, many options in between.

Presenting your home for sale using a stylist enables you to eliminate the guess work and leave nothing to chance. Every detail has been attended to by using an easy-to-follow plan that has been tailored to your home, your needs and your budget.

Your home is market ready, presentation ready and ready to sell.

COAST MAKES TOP 10 LIST

NEWS & VIEWS

After a tough few years the Sunshine Coast property market is again worthy of attention, according to local real estate expert Terry Ryder.

The creator of national website hotspotting.com.au, Ryder recently named the Coast as one of his top 10 Queensland hot spots, which he says are a guide for buyers who want to invest in regions with above-average growth forecast for the medium to long term.

“I’ve been a long-term resident of the Sunshine Coast region but have never been able to include it in a top 10 hot spots list because, frankly, the market has stunk for years,” Ryder says. However, upcoming major investment and infrastructure in the region is key to an uptick in the market, as it

“generates jobs, economic activity and improved amenity for residents”.

Ryder’s top two developments are the $2 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital, which is now under construction, and the continuing growth of the University of the Sunshine Coast.

“The combination of medical and education facilities is always powerful in driving real estate demand,” he says.

HOROSCOPESARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Aim for clear and careful communication this weekend. If you shoot from the lip, you could end up with a major misunderstanding on your hands.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 With impulsive Mars and Jupiter both in your money zone, your urge to splurge is hard to control at the moment. But what catches your eye today may not interest you tomorrow.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Short trips and holidays are highlighted, as Jupiter puts you in the mood to explore your neighbourhood and surrounding region. For some singles – love is closer than you think.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 The sun’s in your sign – until July 23 – but are you hiding your talents, crabs? Confidence is the buzz word of the moment, so you make sure you are shining for the whole world to see!

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Prosperity planet Jupiter is moving through your money zone for the next 13 months. So it’s the perfect time to increase your cash flow via a smart investment or a better paying job.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 You’re in the mood to obsess, and will find it hard to let go of grudges and grievances. Avoid getting drawn into intense discussions – especially with a teenager or friend.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Take extra care when communicating with others this weekend, as you will tend to see situations in an intense and subjective way. A loved one may surprise you with what they say.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Scorpios are feeling compulsive – so it will be difficult to communicate in a clear and cohesive way. But it is a suitable time to study, research or dig up a secret that has others mystified.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Singles – with Jupiter in your partnership zone, love may strike while you’re travelling. Or you could fall for someone you meet at home, who is from a different country or culture.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Capricorns are feeling compulsive! You’re keen to convey your point of view this weekend but, if you come on too strong, you’ll just drive others away. Try to keep a sense of perspective.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Are you in a mental rut? It’s time to shake up your thinking by taking up a stimulating new hobby or studying a topic that has always intrigued you. There’s always more to learn.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Pliable Pisces – you are susceptible to the persuasive charms of a smooth operator. Be careful you don’t get talked into doing something that you really don’t want to do.

4-DAY FORECAST

FISHING REPORTwith Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

How beautiful is the water? It’s warmer in the ocean than out, so my advice? Get amongst it. For the f rst week of the school holidays the tourists have enjoyed beautiful clear days and calm waters. They should enjoy it while it lasts – a S/SE change is coming through, which means a pick-up in swell. With the forecast for showers over the weekend it should be pretty quiet in the water – hopefully you won’t have to share your favourite break with too many ring-ins from Brisbane. Happy days!

ESTUARY: Whiting and f athead are on the drift from the northern banks of the Maroochy near Twin Waters resort to the bar using yabbies with the low-tide gutters concentrating f sh in the gutters. Also, work the areas just pumped for yabbies. Jew are getting on the live bait as the tide slows, around bridge pylons, with plastics also returning quality f sh.

SURF: Not as much action along the beaches as in the rivers, but the rising night tides are still producing tailor, bream and some unstoppables using mullet f llet and pillies with Mudjimba and Pincushion best. Head to Maroochy, Mudjimba and Kawana beaches for whiting and dart in the early morn.

OFFSHORE: There are great reef f sh at present with quality mixed reef f sh being taken from The Barwon Banks to Murphy’s Reef and Alexandra Headland. Try mid-water f oaters for snapper and pearlies.

FRESHWATER: Impoundments will be f ring with a rising barometer the best time to f sh. Deep diving lures and live shrimps are working well in Somerset, Bjelke-Petersen and Boondooma. Our local creeks are also f ring for bass on shallow diving lures and ‘poppers’ as they move down to breed.
