MWMS Newsletter October 14, 2016 From the Principal’s Desk Thank you to all of the students and families who came to Eggspectations last night to support our school and PTA during our first restaurant night of the year! It was a fun way to see folks in the community, while also supporting our school – thank you! Speaking of our PTA, next week they will send out their first PTA newsletter. On the Fridays opposite of the school’s newsletter, the PTA will send updates about various programs and ways you can stay involved and connected to Mayfield, via the PTA. For today, be sure to visit the PTA section later in this newsletter. On October 5 we recognized 8 outstanding students as September’s Citizens of the Month! Each month teachers from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, along with teachers from related arts choose two students to be “Citizens of the Month”. This honor is awarded to students who demonstrate exemplary achievement, attitude, attendance, and BARK attributes: Be Safe, Act Responsibly, Respect Self and Others, and Keep Focused. Congratulations to the September selections for Citizens of the Month!!

Sounds pretty perfect, huh? Well, this fall our students will be involved in both – reading for pleasure and creating sculptures made of PEEPS to show their favorite parts of their books! Want to know more? See the flyer attached to this newsletter! From the Cafeteria Manager: Please note that all checks for your child’s lunch account should be made out to “Food and Nutrition” and not MWMS. A Message from the Health Room Attendance at school is one of our greatest priorities. Student learning is much more successful when students are fully engaged in classroom lessons and activities. Therefore, we want to encourage attendance as much as possible
unless a student is truly ill. When students become ill during the school day, they are expected to go to the Health Room so that the cluster nurse, Ms. Breck, and health assistant, Ms. Mohamed, can assess the situation. This helps them get to know our students better and also be cognizant of any possible major health issues. Having this knowledge also helps our Health Room staff proactively address possible health issues that could affect larger groups of people, such as influenza, lice, or other illnesses. Our health room staff will communicate with the student's family if there is a need for an early dismissal or medical follow-up. If you are contacted by your son or daughter during the school day, please encourage them to report to the health room for evaluation. Thank you so much for your cooperation ... hopefully, this will allow us to provide the best care possible for all of our students! If you have any questions, please call Ms. Breck at or Ms. Mohamed at 410-313-5022. You may also email Ms. Breck at to [email protected].
News from the Gifted and Talented Education Program
G/T Enrichment Program
All students in our school are eligible to take part in opportunities available through our school wide G/T enrichment program. It’s not too late for your student to get involved in a G/T Instructional Seminar!
What are G/T Instructional Seminars?
G/T Instructional Seminars are designed to extend student interests beyond general exploratory experiences and are available to all interested students. Students receive advanced-level instruction and develop a broad range of skills in preparation for in-depth study. G/T seminars this year include Television Production, Book Club, Debate, Financial Literacy (Stock Market Game), Robotics, Youth Advocacy, Photography and Film Production. Students who want to participate are asked to complete a brief interest form and return it to the G/T Room 222.
More information about G/T Seminars and an interest form are available on the MWMS G/T Program website at http://mwmsgt.weebly.com/. Please contact Ms. Singleton, the G/T Resource Teacher, at [email protected] or 410-313-5022 with any questions.

2016-2017 DR.MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. ESSAY CONTEST
ESSAY QUESTION
“DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HAD A DREAM….
WHAT IS YOURS?” STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO WRITE AN ESSAY ABOUT THEIR OWN DREAMS
FOR A BETTER COMMUNITY AND A BETTER WORLD AND WHAT THEY ENVISION THEMSELVES DOING.
Reading With My Peeps The “Reading With My Peeps” reading event is an opportunity for our students to engage in a book of their choice and then creatively express their favorite character, scene, or plot twist. These will be displayed at the Parent –Teacher conferences on November 21 and 22. Any variety of PEEPS can be used to create the sculpture, but the entire sculpture must be created from only PEEPS. The PEEPS may be cut. The size of the sculpture must be no larger than 25” x 30” X 36”. You, students, peers and community members will be able to vote for the sculptures of their choice by purchasing tickets. Money raised will go to the “Ellicott City Partnership” fund to restore from the flood damage, and to support the future of this event. Steps students should take:
Select and read a great book. Design a sculpture to depict a favorite character, scene, or cover of the book. Get the different colors and shapes of PEEPS.
There is a PEEP store in Washington Harbor with LOTS of PEEPS in all varieties all year round. We also will have a code for ordering on-‐line at a discount for our school only as well as have coupons for those who go to the store.
Start building their sculpture. You can use glue or make “Icing glue”, but realize that it will NOT be edible after sitting out for days or weeks. Categories / Awards
